The only thing I didn't really understand what the dream sequences where Seki and then Natsuki were in an hospital bed, and he tells her he died and she went back in time and got hurt in his stead. I need to watch it again. It's one of those movies that doesn't spoon feed you everything. Really good, though. EDIT: God dammit, it's right on the tip of my brain. So the old man was actually Seki himself? Is that what they were trying to say? Because once young Seki traveled to the future, which he didn't do originally, then the strain on future Seki's heart became too much and he dropped dead? Is that it? EDIT 2: I see people in this thread have realized this too. Good, I'm not crazy. I did figure out that they were all connected and this was a multiple timelines thing. Second viewing, here I come! EDIT 3: Did Seki's sister (daughter?) have Down Syndrome? I sorta thought that's what they were going for.

Well, I fairly enjoyed this movie, although it was a bit confusing for me :/ It had a lot of potential but...towards the middle, it kind of just went downhill. I wanted to know who Kyogoku mom was, and what accident Seki and Natsuki were in.

I didn't understand anything. But I loved it. Still have a lot of questions though T_T The thing is, When Kenji is eating with his grandpa and sis, we hear Kenji´s mom yelling at him to help his dad at the beginning of the movie, but then, we never see them. The part when Kyogoku visits someone´s grave (his mom? definitely is someone related to Seki´s grandpa) there is a kanji in the gravestone, perhaps it could give us a hint of the name.... Kyogoku talks about watching snow with his mom, but then he realizes he never did, oddly enough in the after credits it is Kenji´s grandpa and sister who are watching it. (There is something really off about Kenji´s sister btw). If the talking pet was Kyogoku´s dad...then who is Seki´s pet at the end? Kyogoku? Im confused.

I will be honest. I watched this film simply because supercell's song is on it. I endured the movie until it ended and it didn't leave an impact on me. The animation was superb, no question on that, but the story was very confusing for me. There's so much that could have been done for this film. I felt like I wasted my time watching it but then again, since supercell's Ginirohikousen played both in the opening and ending, that somehow eased a little of my disappointment.

It doesn't spoon feed you everything. Additionally, I would bet money that by just watching the movie you aren't going to understand it perfectly. Going to have to throw out some theories and just roll with it. In truth, it's not that hard to connect the dots after watching this movie. I always find it true when reading comments that people have the hardest time comprehending a story as soon as time traveling becomes a major element in the story. Even if there are too many questions left...enjoy the love story, all 'dat animation, and the wonderful music. For <2hr novel adaption it was very good. I'm sure if I had the ability to read the novel and then watch this movie I would feel more satisfied (or maybe not). In any case, concluding the story that was presented with the information given I can say it was great. I'm biased already bc I'm a sucker for romance.

Im really happy so many people liked it, but it wasnt my cup of tea at all. Im not sure what I expected. When I read the title I thought this would me more action oriented, like student with psychic powers fighting each other or somthing like that. The whole psychic part was very vague, and the pacing was a mess. The story was not hard to follow, the only thing that was kind of weird were those dream sequences. Im noticing that Im the only one who disliked the animation. Dont get me wrong, its obviously high quality and talented people worked on it, kudos to them, but, its simply too much. Everwhere cherry petals, eveywhere light effects, so many frames in a characters animation. Its too much of everything, nothing ever stops moving and spinning and shining and they went clearly overboard. IMO hard to watch.

Wow, I don't get what happened in the end. What happened? So much confusion in the second half of the movie - plots jumping one after the other, leaving the previous ones unsolved. Ugh! Frustration!! I wanna know what happens but I don't want to rewatch it and waste another 1.45 hours of my time. :( Aside from the confusing storyline, I enjoyed the art, soundtrack and romance portion of the movie.

I just want to know one simple thing: If Seki went to the future with Kyougoku to help him come back to the present forever, why at the end, he came back alone? That's the saddest thing, Kyougoku and Harukawa don't meet again.

But if he and the grandpa are really the same person from different time periods then that would explain why the grandpa randomly died at the same time that Seki time traveled. Ohh the joys of time travel. ^_^ but seki's grandpa didn't die. in the credit, he's sitting on a wheelchair while staring at the snow (or moon?) with his granddaughter @_@ |

As entertaining it is to read the speculation, allow me to inform. Nerawareta Gakuen the animated movie is loosely based on, and is a sequel to, Nerawareta Gakuen the light novel. (Incidentally, there appears to have been 4 drama series and 2 movie adaptations of the novel before this, all live action, and I assume more faithful adaptations of the original.) I haven't actually read the light novel, but the following is based on the jp wiki page for the light novel. Seki Kouji, the grandfather, is the protagonist of the light novel. It takes place when he's a 2nd year in Middle School. The antagonist of the novel is a girl named Takamizawa Michiru. She was a quiet girl in her 1st year, but in her 2nd year she suddenly ran for, and won, the Student Council Presidency. Stuff happens. It's revealed that Michiru has psychic powers and is supported by a mysterious boy known only as Kyogouku (who is later shown to have come from the future, moon, etc). After their plans are ruined by Seki Kouji, Kyougoku goes back to his own time, Michiru going with him. On the jp wiki for the animated movie, there is a quote from an interview with the author where it is strongly implied that the Kyogouku of the movie is the son of Kyougoku and Michiru of the LN.

Wow, the animation really is outstanding, in my opinion. The scenes looked really cool, and the art was also really good. However, the story wasn't as good. It felt like a lot of time was wasted in the beginning, making it feel like a slice-of-life or something, when only later does it reveal mystery. There is also romance tied into all of this, which in my opinion, kind of got mixed in with the story. By that I mean it felt like the romance was supposed to be important, when in actuality it did not interfere with the time travel, it really only dealt with the characters' feelings. So with that, I'd probably give this a solid 8. On a side note, I actually found this movie from supercell's single while I was downloading all of their music. ![]()

Well yeah, it was really confusing. And i still can't get over the time travel part. For the very first time i feel like i must read the original story. It might have been a bit rushed and left a lot of questions, i still think it was enjoyable. So if i would have to rate it then it would be like a 8/10. PS, does anyone have any idea where could i read the manga?

So in nutshell: Ryouichi comes from the future to take psychic people back with him (to save them from the catastrophe on earth and to repopulate the future), falls in love (with the girl and the place) goes against the original plan (throws in a clumsy excuse), has fight with his dad and as result can't go back to the future (the crystal is broken), can't stay in the present either without that crystal thing because he is an anomaly and will get erased, Kenji decides to help him go back, they both get erased from the present in the process. The end. Now, i have very mixed feeling about this one. I get that they wanted to get that A Midsummer Night's Dream vibe, they pretty much were saying this over and over again, but there were too many lens-flares, way too many! And it's a good thing that this was animated so no cherry trees were harmed in the process. The whole cellphone+school council intrigue was absolutely pointless, I get what they wanted to show: how people in the future didn't communicated verbally and how thoughts are very honest etc., but that was very unsatisfying way to go about it. I did liked the the dream sequences, the no-time space and basically the second half of the movie. Bottom line: Interesting idea, but clumsy execution.

Just finished watching it. It was truly beautiful, visual wise that is. But despite its outstanding visuals it was just an average movie in my opinion. Although they had some interesting ideas, most was left unexplored and unanswered. Now we still don't know anything whatsoever about the future and how Seki's powers will supposedly lead to earth's demise (at least that's what I got from it). The relationships weren't anything special either. Typical childhood friend becomes lover - development. Just to plain obvious from the start. Not saying that it was horrible by any means but just as average as the rest of the story. And why the hell did it take Seki weeks/months (not really sure about this one!?) to return at the end? Why not just travel back to the moment after where he left with Ryougoku? I mean he is time traveling... But they didn't explain anything. Seki and Ryougoku are supposed to fight!? Sounds like there is more to their abilities than mind reading. But once again nothing else on this matter... Just shows how much was left unanswered (especially about there technology/abilities/future). Overall I could keep watching mostly thanks to its stunning visuals. Aside from that it's a fine movie I guess but in my opinion there's a quite some wasted potential.

Isayama Hajime should be awarded The Manga with The Highest Inconsistencies of Characters' Appearances. He keeps performing multiple plastic surgeries on those Shingeki No Kyojin characters in a SINGLE chapter. Yes, I've read up to the latest chapter of Shingeki No Kyojin manga. Forced myself to read through the kidsketching chapters after the anime's ended. At least from now on, I only have to go through the hell once a month. Patiently awaiting SNK TV/movie/OVA anime-sequel. The 2015 SNK live-action movie would probably suck.

Just finished watching the movie yesterday. It was a lovely animated movie. That being said, there are problems. Hopefully, the English title is some kind of translation error, because there was definitely no psychic wars in the school. It was more akin to Invasion of the Body Snatchers. What was actually accomplished during the movie. Guess it would be the resolution of the relationship between Kenji and Natsuki. The subversion of the school's student body doesn't seem to go anywhere. Ryōichi should have said, that he just traveled back in time to party with Kenji. Well, that and falling in love. Ryōichi and his dad's mission seems to have faded away. Perhaps all these time traveling futurists, should apply their talents in preventing the Earth's demise. Since they already are messing up the timeline (in for a penny, in for a dollar). You can't take people from the past (unless they are already dead) without changing the future or creating divergent timelines. It is a beautiful anime movie, but the story sucks, especially as you approach the climax. The characters didn't bother me, but the direction the writing led them on is the problem. Also, seems too many people have the psychic power to travel via time in the future. At its core it is a love story between Kenji and Natsuki. Perhaps they should have kept it that way from the beginning to the end, without all science fiction thrown in. For those who like the movie, because it left the answers to the questions to your imagination; more power to you. But if you like knowing what is going on in your movies, and for it to have a clear or passable ending, then this movie isn't for you, unless the art is enough for you.

I see the spoiler in the middle of watching it, "In the beginning, he was in love with Harukawa Kahori, however, near the end he was in love with Ryouura Natsuki, returning the feelings she had for him." I was like: "Wooho! Yippie!" This is what I clearly wanted!! Too bad the ending is rushed, I'm hoping a confession scene :( Overally, I liked it. 8/10

Not going to give out any score because I realized it's only for fans of original novel and not newcomers to this setting. Movie clearly doesn't care about people who aren't familiar with previous NG works and only serves as fanservice to those who read the novel. Well, possibly it also intends to interest others enough to pick up the book and well, I could say it succeeded to some extent in my case. I wish we got full cour or maybe even two, story wouldn't be such a horrible mess then. I liked the characters and visuals are certainly amazing so I won't regret watching this movie, even though story barely made sense. As a standalone production it simply doesn't fill its purpose.

The trouble with the (cliched, obvious) romance is that it works against the rest of the story. If the story is about Kenji discovering his love for Natsuki, then why does Natsuki do literally nothing in the later half of the film, and he ends up abandoning her to save Ryochi? Why does Kenji even like Ryochi at all?!? The whole film is a bunch of disconnected elements thrown into a pot and stirred. Some of the individual elements are okay, but the whole is far, far, far less the sum of its parts.

Ok, animation-wise this movie is pure heaven, it was breathtaking experience to watch this and it sole beauty can be described only as something Makoto Shinkai can do (though he does better with emotions). Atmosphere-wise it reminded me the movie Toki wa Kakeru Shoujo for just every minute of its almost two-hours length (though GWLTT is still bit better). Plot-wise, this is great school story for first 70 minutes but then they starts mentioning time-travels and it gets very complicated - the story seems very though and deep but its not so good presentation left me confused (or sort of). I got out with most of it but I have the feeling I will have to watch this again to comprehend it fully cause for the first time it felt some parts are just missing to get the whole picture - but that, on the other hand, can be movie when one has to think and be smart to fully enjoy it. All the time I had the feeling I was watching something bigger. It's great experience nonetheless and sometimes I will definitely watch it again, if only for its poetism (that will be after I remind myself of Midsummer's Night Dream again). 8/10

Nothing was explained at all, the plot was terrible and the characters were meh. Wasted potential because this could have been something great. The visuals were amazing though, I probably ejaculated at least on 5 different scenes. The music was beautiful as well. The scene after the credits added some bit of closure, before the credits I was mad as shit before that scene. 8/10

Found this late night hidden gem because I couldn't sleep before AM class. I thoroughly enjoyed it but it still felt unfilled, probably due to the time constraints of a movie. I have my own theory regarding an explanation of the premise, but those who read the original material never bothered to provide clarification. Can anyone vouch for the post regarding the JP wiki? I tried browsing through this thread but its just filled with sheep, and an elitist MAL critic who has a hard on for someone with similar understanding.
