Ayy tbf Ray is my favourite character even in the manga later on. I have a soft spot for Norman but hbdxjnhse my care for him up until the most recent chapters of the manga haven’t been that high as other manga readers may guess. Meanwhile Ray is consistently a great character who develops along the manga along with Emma and it’s fun to watch.

I’m cool with the bits they took out this episode. Much rather they didn’t take out as much as they condensed chapters 2-5 down. Which makes sense given the scale of the series. The manga is there so you can get more detail and story, it’s the appeal of reading manga.

What I love about the anime so far is the directing and atmosphere. They absolutely nailed it. Since I’m looking to do directing after my animation course, I always keep my eye out for well directed shows and this show is filled with great shots and scene dynamics. I love it when a show can make conversations fun and thrilling. The norman and Ray conversation at the end of this episode was great! Also I love how we started this episode with the clock swinging shot and how it ended with the sound of the clock, it really gives a sense that time is on the line.

So yeah, some things were cut, but nothing major enough to disrupt the flow of the story, again if you want more read the manga. And all the directing is amazing. I’m looking forward to the next episode tomorrow!!

I don't know if I can think of a more engaging anime (at least in the first two episodes).
We know that there are demons and also humans beyond the wall (Sister Krone). It will be interesting to see the interactions between the two in future episodes (I hope).
Great story and great animation so far. The Japanese seiyus are doing an excellent job, too, as they always do.

The suspense in this show is so good! She fucking knows. She has to. I know it! LOL. I'm guessing the second woman she brought in is to deal with them somehow...

That scene with the trio at the end was amazing. The buildup with the use of that awesome soundtrack was so well done. I'm in love with this show right now. Kudos to the director!

Really, really rushed. So much cramped into each minute. You don't get any time to appreciate what is actually happening before they move on.

Mama is a scary enemy. I think that her "clock" is a GPS.

I understand Emma but her idea will make things worse.

Actually I'm really enjoying the anime even tho they are cutting a lot of parts in comparative to the original content. I even made a AMV using only this 2nd episode and a lofi music. If you wanna check it, please click here

So I decided to read the manga alongside the anime, watching the anime first. Personally though I have currently only read to chapter 5 I thought it was a pretty good adaptation. Honestly some of the voice over seems kind of redundant.

Specifically the scene where mama confronts Emma while Emma is looking at Connie's drawing. I watched the anime first and theres nothing said in the voice over in the manga that wasnt completely obvious in the anime. In fact I think this scene worked better in the anime in a sort of show dont tell sort of way.

Then theres the introduction of sister krone. I agree that this did feel rushed in the anime. I think you understand how they feel all the same but a lot of the mind games element was lost. It seemed pretty excessive to cut out all of that. Imo this was the only scene so far I'd say was poorly done. However its still pretty clear what they're feeling so it's not too bad.

As for the stuff that was cut

I'm liking it so far though so I'm gonna keep watching this way and see how I feel about the show and manga overall. From wagt I know episode 3 covers up to chapter 10 and they're only gonna adapt the first 35 or so for thos season. So seems to me like after the first couple episodes the pacing will probably slow way down.

Every single day onward is a very intense bout of psychological warfare because one slip-up means getting shipped away to their deaths like the rest of them. Emma and Norman's trying really hard to not make it obvious that they've seen the most traumatizing thing ever last night but Mom's making it very difficult and scary for them.

They surveyed their obstacles and they found a giant wall, tracking devices, and now a new enemy in addition to Mom's ironclad composure. At least Ray's in with them.

That reveal last week completely shattered their worldview. Nothing really happened here, just more planning, but because their world has been shattered everything's taken a new darker shade and even a creaky lamp in a storage room makes me nervous.

This plan is stupid and there's no way to save all those kids but I'm hoping they'll find a way

I feel like Mom caugth them on her tracking tool while they were talking near the wall. That's probably why she called another assistant. Also where did the new baby come from?!?!? And why couldn't they made Ray and Norman's voices little more masculine? Their voices kinda doesn't suit them. But nonetheless it was a great episode.

damn... norman just straight up revealed he likes emma. my man
but emma is still pretty idiotic, you really can't save the whole group of children, christ. especially when they're this young, 11 and 10 year olds perhaps but younger than that and something stupid is bound to happen. them 6 year olds ain't gonna keep quiet

-The Wall!

-A tracker O_o "Mom" is weeeell aware of what's going on. The effort placed into these psychological games is probably just an attempt to destroy their will to escape and pacify them long enough until they're shipped out within a year. It's a very thin line these kids will have to stride lest they be shipped early to their doom. And now Mom's new helper is going to make this a daunting task.

-Ray becoming the third wheel in such an explicitly stated manner XD

-So Emma is idealistic as well... Ray is right, but given two months they have some leeway to conjure some possible solutions that could work in rescuing everyone. However if they do decide on that approach then I could see them going through with a plan, failing, and then someone else gets shipped away to serve as both a warning and morale-killer.

-Love the suspense that's maintained.

Another great episode. That wall is insane. They have many challenges and I'm excited to see what they do. They seem pretty intelligent so far and, weirdly, hardcore, especially Norman. I need to read the manga!

Imagine that, low scores? Out they go to be normal quality food. High score? Let them enjoy some more years until they're inevitably sent out to be high quality food.
Whether they escape or not, the outside world is a demon society. Humans are their slaves and food supplies. At this point, most people would've just lost hope and will to live.

Not for the trio. They will escape no matter what, even though they're aware of how stupidly, dangerously, terrifying it'll be. (Damn, the face of dread Norman and Emma expresses are so on point! Made the atmosphere feel more realistic than it should.)

I don't like Ray's VA, I know almost every kid there is voiced by females but in his case he really sounds off for his archetype.

Other than that the episode was good if little rushed.

Can't say I'm really digging Ray's character. He was way too unfazed by learning the truth about Mama and the orphanage, it was comical. He acted almost robotically rational when he was supposed to be shaken up but 5 minutes later he had no trouble getting angered to Emma for her insistence that they should save everyone. Kind of inconsistent, not to mention he doesn't act like his age at all.

With all this suspense and the strong horror vibes, what stands out to me is how drenched it all is in this miasma of childhood imagination. Like, there's these things we don't know, and our only insight into what they may be is the childrens' contemplations. There's room to believe that everything that's happening is just imagination run amok, almost like a reverse School-Live situation.

New enemy, this is gonna be tough to make a good strategy for escaping
Panicked throughout the episode thinking Mother would overhear their conversation...so far she doesn't know yet but I think she suspects them, esspecially considering young children can't keep calm after seeing what happened to Conny.

Having nightmares after what Emma saw, I can't blame her at all. It's amazing how calm Norman still was at the breakfast. The interaction between him and Emma is beautiful. Like when they found out in which order the kids get chosen there. We also finally saw what's behind that fence. This big wall looks like it won't be easy for them to escape.

But to make it even worse Isabellas watch is a receiver to locate the transmitter the kids got implanted. The atmosphere is crazy at some points. Especially the scene with Isabella and Emma. Norman was shivering after that and Emma what completely out of breath. I think the most important things were that they started to make a plan and told Rey about the whole situation.

Like Ray I also think with so much kids almost noone will survive. And like Norman mentioned. Who knows what's behind this wall. I won't believe that this is the only plantation where kids get feed to monster. Isabella definitely knows something and with the new adult it will be even more difficult to escape.

Even in this show Killua is the objective one lol. Anyway, I thought they would drop the "it's a demon society outside so it's kinda pointless to escape"-bomb a little later. But it's also possible that these demons who eat kids live in disguise outside and just blending in with the humans. Could be that this orphanage is in an island in some backwater place.

An awesome development so fast in this series! The first episode already hooked me with the story and this episode made me already love the characters, I hope they keep it up ^^

There's some amazing chemistry between Emma's immense energy and Norman's cool mind. Haven't seen lot of Ray yet, but he also seems quite interesting. Also the general feeling of the situation they are in is conveyed perfectly. I hope the story continues to develop like this!

i like the plot set up, it invites a lot of questions re:worldbuilding, but i agree that it feels rushed. i find the kids kind of not believable, they don't act their age and it's not explained how they know about things like farms and GPS... also that bleh shounen "i have to save everyone" speech emma gave (But i suppose that is just the tone of the anime so can't do much about that)

hope it gets darker and we get more world-building :) i am really curious if the adults are actually human or not. also i hope they give up on escaping with everyone lmao

Once again, it's a very good adaptation ! I feel like the lack of internal monologues make things become pretty rushed and the characters are consequently not as developed as they are in the manga but I understand this choice, it would be way too long and pretty boring in anime.
The most interesting about watching this anime after reading the manga is still seeing the characters' reactions when knowing more about them.

Let's not forget that they are way smarter than kids their age, that's the point, they're pratically geniuses. They don't really have the brain of a kid.
Also, Ray's character isn't inconsistent, just keep watching. (It just would be too bad to give up on some characters when their behaviour can actually be explained.)

Okay guys! I just finished the anime and I must say it’s been an amazing ride! However, I do have a question which I don’t think was cleared up in the anime. Ray said that he performed experiments on the children so that he could understand how the transmitters work. He also claimed that he might have made them get shipped earlier than normal because of what he did. What I don’t understand is how he was able to perform these experiments on the chidren without Mama ever finding out. This seemed like a plot hole to me because Mama is no fool, she would constantly monitor the children and even tuck their hair behind their ears to check on the transmitters being intact. Also, if he hurt them in some way in order to investigate the transmitters, how did she not suspect anything was going on and just shipped them out earlier than normal (especially with her being so keen on having the most “perfect products” of the farm). It just seemed highly improbable that she would just allow Ray to experiment on the children at his will or not find out if he was doing so behind her back.

That was a great follow-up to such a great hook of a premiere, despite the slightly fast nature of it. Already the planning is on for Emma and Norman to find a way to get out of the orphanage and escape with all the kids rather than sacrificing any or just staying there themselves to be feasted on later. They've got quite the hurdle though to get through as while figuring out how to escape, they realize how Isabella has tracking devices implanted in all of their bodies, therefore knowing the location of all of the kids and also knowing that Emma and Norman went past the gate and saw the monsters and Conny's dead body first hand.

Emma and Norman get the assistance of Ray due to how great he is at strategizing and thinking of solutions to problems like these (plus he is the same age as them and one of the potential big time sacrifices along with Emma and Norman that could be shipped off next), but Emma and Ray clash on if only the three of them should escape with a much higher success rate chance, or if everyone should escape for a minimal chance, and Norman's all aboard on the tougher venture, all because of how he witnessed Emma feel broken that her family is being sacrificed like this and she doesn't want to see her fellow brothers and sisters be hurt like what happened to Conny. It's naive but at the same time, she's a kid and she loves everyone, how can she have the heart to just throw everyone under the bus.

The end of the episode had Sister Krone show up and it just became even more tougher for the trio given how there are two mothers now who can handle the kids and are aware of what's happening with Emma and Norman. Quite the intense and suspenseful episode overall, and the music was fantastic overall, especially when Emma and Ray were going back and forth with their argument.

Plus, Isabella's face when she saw Emma in the corridor was priceless and came out of nowhere too. Even though Emma knows about Isabella knowing about them, she still plays the role of being one of the children to Isabella really well and gives her a big hug to avoid any sort of suspicion when it comes to the other kids for now just in case.
