The mal score has no impact on whether I watch something or not. I try all the seasonal shows and am willing to drop anything I feel is a 7 or less. I don't always drop them, depending on how much free time I have that season or how many other shows I've decided not to drop, but that's the point where I start being willing to drop them.

I usually only check out anime with an 8.0 or above, few years ago I'd check out anything with a 7.0+, just wasnt worth it a lot of the time.

MAL scores are a shit way of judging whether or not to watch something. If anything it's a general guideline but it is no where near worth using as a cut off. I really only use it when I have a bunch of shows I think is interesting and then I'll watch in order of low to high or whatever

Judge a show by what it is. Either by synopsis, tags, images, clips whatever. If I see one that looks like it has an interesting story or cover, I watch 1-3 episodes and if I'm bored I drop it and move on. There's a lot of great stuff below 7.5 and I've also found shows above 7.5 to be boring as well

Recommendations are almost always a better guide too. If you have a show you like go to the recommendations and see what's interesting and watch it. Or if you have friends (or in my case the MAL Discord) ask them for stuff. Or for me, KHORAnime compilations sometimes have clips that makes me wanna see what its all about. That's how I found Love Lab and it was worth the watch

I don't think the scores matter much either way but if anything looking through stuff with high scores can be a good starting point if you're looking for something new to watch. But not always reliable. Personally I would never let the score dissuade me from watching something I was genuinely interested in.

Anything below a 7 on MAL is a show I automatically assume must be pretty bad, so it'd take some extra work for me to actually watch it (e.g. a friend highly recommending it etc). I only feel this way because I see so many people who slap 9s and 10s on almost every show on their lists so the scores are pretty slanted upwardly.

Not a good system. There are plenty of shows worth watching that are below 7.5. There's also some trash that's somehow made its way to the 7.5+ territory.

I watch what looks interesting.

I don't have a cut-off score per se but I tend to steer more towards popular or high rated shows. If I really hated something that I took a gamble on I might secretly drop it after a few episodes without informing MAL LOL. Sometimes shows over an 8 score have been disappointing IMO - Re: Zero and Kill la KIll I'm looking at you! But sometimes there are series rated significantly lower than an 8 like Amagi Brilliant Park and Gamers! that I really loved, giving a 9 score to both of them! End of Moffing story :D

I don't have one. Anime with a mean score lower than 4 are an indicator of it being bad but they can be severely misunderstood. Lots of those 80's and 90's OVA's are in that realm but there are some gems amongst those.

i watch based off of interest more than rating, but i mean if it’s rated less than a 5 it’s probably not worth my time. normally i like to keep it above a 7, that’s the safest.

Scores are pretty inconsistent. It makes it problematic to try and say "x score is good/bad." Instead, you should rely on your intuition and trustworthy recommendations to watch a show.

One of the biggest problems are that the MAL community is not always the best judge of quality. A high score is typically determined by how many casual viewers inflate the score to oblivion, and how many soulless critics drag the score to hell. This makes scores from anime from the most recent year higher than they should be. Old anime and others good shows that get swept under the rug often have scores as low as 6.2 despite their quality, because it doesn't have something that convinces a casual fan to give it a 9 instead of a 7, and the critics aren't going anywhere. For these reasons, I'm usually willing to watch a show that has a score as bad as 6.0 if I get a trustworthy recommendation.

As for the rules I go by when scouting anime myself, I avoid watching anything below 7 unless the story really calls out to me. 7.5 is a good cutoff point if the show seems fishy to you though. If you're watching something that is from before 2000, pretend the score is +1 or so because those anime are usually underrated.

TL;DR
6.0 - cutoff point for trustworthy recommendations and old anime
7.0 - cutoff point for enticing premise
7.5 - cutoff point for fishy premise

for me it has to be >=7.00 for me to consider it. I may make a few exceptions to anime that are >=6.90 but thats only if I'm bored and have nothing else to watch.

I don't care about scores as lots of people tend to overrate things and many of them don't use all 10 numbers to rate anime.
But traditionally, I'd agree that definition of good is something 7.4-7.5+. Still I have seen several things with 7.0-7.5 (or even lower) which actually were good. So I don't take it too seriously.
In my opinion many 8+ anime should be below 6 instead

I don't see why you should limit yourself, 5-6 is average so you will miss out on some good cult shows and end up watching bland acceptable shows.

Under 5 is my cutoff point and usually anything below that is abysmal. 5-6 and it would have to be tagged with things I like.

That would probably be anything below a 7, because if it is both uninteresting to me and has a general bad reception, then there is no reason to put myself through such pain and agony by watching it.

There is so many good anime around at the moment, that to stop for a second and watch bad or mediocre at best anime is just a waste of the hours I schedule in an effort to watch anime without it interfering with other aspects of my life.

I watch any anime I'll think I'll be interested in; most of the time, the anime rated 5 or below don't interest me, so I don't watch them.
That doesn't mean my cutoff score is 5, but's it's something to note I guess.

I have my own standards

Anime : <7.6 = low score
Manga : <8.2 = low score

But I'd still watch it no matter what's the score. "Oh it's considered good/bad by majority" is all I get from seeing the score.

Never look at ratings, but i do check out individual reviews to get an impression of what to expect. Just reading the summary is often not enough to get an idea how the show is gonna turn out, viewer reviews tend to be brutally honest in that regard.

I find the ratings to be an average among MAL users. 7.5 is pretty decent for an anime. But anything below that I would consider to be a low score. 6.8 or lower would be almost unwatchable.

I would say for more recent anime, especially seasonal, I would be a little hesitant to start anything with a score below 7. If I see a seasonal with that low of a score, it's usually pretty obvious that people didn't like it that much, or are divided by it.
But score is actually one of the last things I judge a show on. Usually there is plot, studio, animation, and previous works.

Usually the only reasons I add a show to my PTW is either if it's something I've heard about a lot (in terms of popularity), something I have seen the opening to (or a clip) and liked it, or something I know about already or have read to the description to. So if it is already on my list for one of those reasons, I usually don't even bother looking at the score it has before I start it. If it has a low score, I'll usually only avoid it if it already isn't in my PTW.

I don't have a cut-off score nor do I encourage people to have one. People should watch an anime and form their OWN opinions on it, not judge it based on the number beside it or what people are saying.

High scores might make me inclined to check a title out, but low scores aren't necessarily going to turn me away. Especially since, as Pullman, EcchiGodMamster, and others have mentioned, ecchi/harem shows that I know I'm likely to enjoy tend to get comparatively low ratings.

MAL "Percentile" based on ranking might be a better measure than score alone, since the lower end of the scale doesn't get used too much. I'm using Skelter Heaven's #9829 as the baseline, since it's the lowest-scored title and ones after that in the list are probably ranked that way due to a combination of low scores and low user counts.

00th percentile = 1.90
10th percentile = 5.33 (Representative title: #8846, Chrono Trigger OVA)
20th percentile = 5.78 (#7863, Battery)
30th percentile = 6.14 (#6879, KeroKero Keroppi: Our Treasure)
40th percentile = 6.39 (#5899, I'll/CKBC)
50th percentile = 6.63 (#4920, Angel Tales)
60th percentile = 6.87 (#3930, Tytania)
70th percentile = 7.15 (#2945, Escaflowne the Movie)
80th percentile = 7.40 (#1966, AIR)
90th percentile = 7.75 (#984, Rage of Bahamut: Genesis)
95th percentile = 8.05 (#490, Kobato)
97th percentile = 8.23 (#294, Garden of Words)
99th percentile = 8.52 (#97, Rascal does not Dream of Bunnygirl-senpai)
99.5th percentile = 8.69 (#49, Monster)

To me, 7.5 seems like too high a cutoff, as it cuts out 83% of everything that qualifies for the by-score rankings. 7 may be more reasonable, and there's still a good chance of finding "above average" stuff in the 6.5-7 range, especially if it involves genres/studios/voice actors you prefer.

I don't have one. I deviate too often from the consensus to use it as a criterion. I've been burned many times by going into an anime with a good score/reviews and expecting it to be good but it turns out to be crap. Besides, sometimes it's refreshing to go into something expecting it to be crap (especially if it actually turns out to be good).

For me, it goes like this.

Over 7.8 - will watch no matter what
Between 7.5 - 7.7 - might watch depending on the story & genre
7.4 & below - ignored

The only time I watched an Anime that has a super low score was Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan. And that is extremely too low. That Anime is a comedy and it consistently delivers LOL moments throughout. Till this day I still don't understand how a COMEDY Anime that funny is rated below a 7.

I also forgot about Angel Cop. Another show rated below a 6. I saw some clips of it on youtube and decided to check it out. I loved it. It's a 9/10 to me.

Below a 6? idk. I don't use ratings as the final hammer on whether to indulge. If it's up my alley or sounds interesting, I'll give it a go. I generally disagree with the consensus mal scores anyway.

The real gamble is watching something currently airing only to realize it's pure shit and wish you had ratings to give you an idea of how it was gonna go (ex. Diabolik Lovers some years ago)

FYI, there was a bug in the system for about two days that caused all anime with certain genre tags not to be ranked, which causes over a thousand of them to be de-ranked. The bug was fixed yesterday. I ran some similar stats a couple of days ago and at the time there were 10502 ranked anime (now 10507). It looks like you ran your numbers while the bug was in effect.

I normally do 7 or above as well, unless the ones rated lower are kids show (ie. pokemon), one of those otome game adaptations with good art, or quirky unique short films. Those are more based on personal taste so the scores aren't really accurate for me.

Nowadays even a score above 8 doesn't mean anything, at least if it's a sequel, because most people are apparently unable to score something, belonging to a franchise they like, harshly.
But for older animes it's the other way around.
