THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
This was... awkward. o.o
Wait.. 'awkward' is not a very accurate word... 'dumb' perhaps? Or maybe just 'stupid'?

Anyway, this was a ridiculously random episode. Not to mention it was the ending of the series! >.>
They could have concluded the series like they just did in about 2-3 minutes, showing some seconds for each character and what happened to them, showing Kiki and Michel looking for Shiro, whatever. They just had to delete the ending theme from episode 11 and there would be enough time.
But the creators opted for a full episode about useless things they didn't even bother to explain. I'm guessing those kids were Newtype experiments but that is not the issue here. We had no need to even know about their existence, much less dwell on their "epic" battle to defend their names, just to have them disappearing, looking for a "new life", as if they never existed.

Clearly, one of the worst final episodes I have seen in a series.
I had a 7 as final score ready for this series after episode 11, but this ending forces me to lower it.
The strongest point of the series is the realism of its setting, where there are no 'Amuros' with beastly reflexes or 'Gundams' with the ability to use the invincibility cheat. However, that was all, really. Truly mediocre series, with several decent-to-good episodes on the second half and a horrible ending.

And THIS is considered one of the best Gundam series?
I enjoyed the original much more than this one. But if this is considered one of the best, I fear for my future, as I'm planning to watch all Gundam series soon.

Final score 5/10

I see the previous episode as the real "ending".
This felt more like a random filler episode with those kids. It was nice to see Shiro and Aina alive and well though. This is definitely the weakest episode but it still doesn't affect my final score, as I truly love this anime. All the other episodes are great in my opinion and this wasn't bad.

This episode left a bad aftertaste in my mouth. I felt as though the whole directors robbed me of a conclusive ending, seems as though this ending was just a way to stir up excitement for the upcoming sequel.

5/10 for me

The worse Gundam I've seen so far (I read that ZZ is the worst though lol)

Good animation but the story is mediocre and I didn't really care for any characters...

Weak episode. But from what I've read/heard, this isn't really the true ending( it was episode 11) and this was just one of those bonus episodes for fans. I give this episode a 2.5/5 but it doesn't affect my overall score for 08th ms team though.

A blemish on an otherwise great anime. Best just to forget this episode even exists, except for the last couple minutes where you see Aina and Shiro living happily ever after, that was nice.

I can't believe this ended with badly written filler. Worst Gundam episode I've seen, even moreso than some of the early ZZ ones.

The Gundam franchise is always really polar, either succeeding very much or failing miserably - usually both at the same time, in specific ways. This series stripped out every single strength the others had, deleting hardly a single weakness. If anything the short length forced even more flaws, such as underdeveloped characters, a rushed plot, skimmed over details, abandoned story-lines, arbitrarily resolved conflicts, contrived coincidence to get things moving again, simple motivations, and unrealistic emotional progression in a series widely credited for realism.

It had occasionally good art direction, and the great music elevated otherwise dull events. Of the things I can say about it, that's as good as it gets

I was expecting to see the post-war lives of other team members in this episode. Instead, I got 2/5 of the 08th team and a side story. Although the side story isn't all that bad, but imo they shouldn't have shown the whereabouts of Shiro and Aina in the end.

It actually had a decent premise, but it ended as a poor episode. If the point really was showing how the war affected some orphans, it could've been better without a cyber newtype background, nor Shiro and Aina.

In any case, it didn't affect too much my overall enjoyment. Battle routines that made sense and sensible characters, this is definitely one of the best Gundams I've seen so far. Unfortunately, when you're comparing to those other anime out there, it's decent enough but not great.

Horrible episode. They could have wrapped up the orphans in 10 minutes at least. Save the last half for some reminiscing and have Michel give Shiro an epilogue of the rest of the characters. (Sanders maybe KIA, or Eledore becoming famous etc). As much as i hate to say it, the Gundam SEED epilogue was the way to go.

Series was great, WAY better than SEED.Just go to show you don't need to be a Newtype/Coordinator/innovator/x Rounder to be the focal point of a series. Story was good and the characters were entertaining.

Even though the final episode was horrible, i still give the series a 10.

This episode had many interesting ideas, but did not receive enough time to explore them to any meaningful extent, and was unrelated to the previous 11 episodes with the exception of two characters. While this episode by itself wasn’t bad, it wasn’t necessary or truly wanted. The episode does show (in its own way) what makes this series the best Gundam series in my opinion and why this is one of my favorite anime. This show thrives on subtleties. It is the little details in the animation, of how people act, of how people interact, and the challenges they face that makes the show so endearing. With the exception of episode 11, there really weren’t that many ridiculous situations. All the missions the 8th Team received were reasonable missions to get. No of the battles fought were truly decisive in determining whether the war was going to be won or lost, yet they were still significant in achieving that outcome. It is one of the best depictions of war one can expect to find.

10/10 for the series.

Also, I didn’t bother to keep track but I think Shiro only had around 5-7 kills while piloting, depending on how you count it.

Braindead episode, there were some good ideas but it failed so hard it's incredible. As a whole, 08th MS Team had horrible characterization and character development, character defining issues were just brushed aside or handled really superficially and character chemistry was awful for a war drama. And the story wasn't nearly focused or intense enough, they really butchered the thematic value with stupid decisions. At least this had neat animation and cool mech battles, and characterization attempts were sometimes on the right track for a split-second.

Even ZZ had a better story and cast of characters than this. 5/10.

Edit: Now that I think of it after getting over the disgust over this episode, the guerilla village attack episode was really damn amazing, I guess I'll be merciful and pump up the score a bit for that one and some of the best mech combat I've seen in anime.

Besides this crappy final episode the overall series was pretty great. Was gonna give it a 9/10 but the iffy 11th episode ending where they somehow survive the explosion and the bad epilogue that is episode 12 have brought it down to an 8/10.

Well this felt pointless and dumb.
Honestly I don't get why everyone claims this the best Gundam out there, even one of the best animes made. It started out good but then it just went downhill. The cast is full of stereotypes and hardly any of them have development, this "soldiers point of view" is a total BS. Plot is weak and cliche. Sad to say I enjoyed ZZ more. Animation though is top notch.

6.7 till episode 11, 6/10 with this stupid episode.

I didn't mind this episode. I would agree with others that this episode was completely pointless and sucks as an ending, but I liked it better than episode 11. I liked Kiki and I'm glad to see her as herself rather than how the past episode left her....

Agreed. Considering ZZ is next for me, I'm really afraid. I'm not sure if I'll give this show a 5 or 6/10. It's not as bad as Zeta, no doubt due to its' shortness, but it's definitely under the original.

This is something people shouldn't even be doing, because one or two people say it's the best you guys tend to go in with such high expectations and expect idk what you would, but it ends up messing your enjoyment of it. You even have people saying that SEED is one of the best.....

I almost gave the series a 5/10, but that GM sniper and the last fight the MC had saved it.

Weak.
As far as I'm concerned there is no episode 12, so it won't affect my final rating in the least.

The first half was very underwhelming (save for one episode I think), and while things definitely got better in the last few eps, it just wasn't enough to make me forget about some major flaws (lame forced romance that prevented me from feeling anything towards the couple's hardships, weak characterization, story lacking focus etc.) that seriously hindered my enjoyment of show.
I really don't get where its reputation as the best Gundam comes from, nor do I want to believe this is the best Gundam I'll ever have watched. Cause afaic 0079 was better.

So it's a 6,5 rounded up to a 7 because of the 'realistic' setting revolving around ground combat and the crazy production values.

On to Zeta now !

This was a good episode, up until the ending. I really liked the everything that happened up until 11. The 08th unit had good chemistry, and likable members. The battles were great as well. This is lauded as one of the more realistic Gundam series, and indeed it was without all the Newtype magic, but despite being more experienced soldiers, Shiro and Aina had the same naivete all the other Gundam pilots, exacerbated by the fact that they survived. It was a good show, and I consider this one of the better series, but nothing tops 0079 and 0080 for me, thus far. On to finish up what little I have left of the UC timeline.

Honestly i kind of enjoyed this episode, i see this for what it is, a extra little side story that comes after the series true ending and climax at episode 11. I honestly though the story was fairly sweet and really enjoyed the final scene of them all reuniting, it really doesnt harm the story at all by existing.

I'm glad this had a happy ending (or a realistic version of a happy ending in war scenario/military drama anime) because a lot of romance anime which have "drama" genre as their sub-category tends to have bad or bitter-sweet endings where either the main couple doesn't end up together or one or both of them die. So for me this was enjoyable, although I do agree that the 12th episode was unnecessary, or at the the very least could have been taken into a different direction.

Unlike many other posters I found the last episode to be quite strong. It reminded me a bit of the DBZ episode Plight of the Children at the beginning of the show that dealt with the orphans. I presume that the kids here were failed Newtypes, and their situation was quite emotional.

Was nice seeing Michel and Kiki together. I honestly liked Aina, more than most Gundam females, but I would have preferred Shiro to be with Kiki. I understand there is an age gap, but actually it turns out to have not been that drastic after all. Shiro is 23 (i thought he was 18-20 while watching) and Kiki is 17 (i thought 14-15, mainly since Shiro was calling her a kid which doesn't make much sense for 17), so there is nothing overally odd about the age gap.

I'm glad that Shiro and Aina survived and started a family together. It's rare for a gundam series to have a happy end of sorts. Sure there was the lost leg, death of Ginius etc, but many other Gundam characters have faired worse in other series.

This is the 2nd best Gundam I have seen. It is still a fair amount beyond the only True Masterpiece of the series War in the Pocket. Overall the ride was pretty emotional, realistic (relative), had likable characters, romance, and some good "villains" (Rip Norris).

9/10.

technically speaking, this episode served as an epilogue of sorts to the series, and it is just there to appease fans and introduce a little more about the Gundam universe - newtypes. The final scene must have broke Kiki up, Aina got laid by Shiro.

Eh. An epilogue is an epilogue. Can't complain.

I appreciate 08th MS Team. I thought I liked the characters in ZZ, but after watching this I now realize that I was only kinda forcing myself to like the characters in ZZ-- heck, same with quite a few of the Gundam installments I've watched so far. I genuinely liked the characters in MS Team. I wasn't shouting, "Gawd get this piece of shit of the screen already", in fact I was always glad to see the usual cast.
They weren't perfect characters-- can't say much about being perfect "people"-- but they were enjoyable even so.

So far, I can't say this is the best Gundam, but I do feel that it's up there. I came in thinking, "PWEH! All these people say 08h MS Team is the best? I'll be the judge of that". Pleasantly surprised; I see why people enjoy it.

Liked this last episode, it was satisfying enough to see the characters, especially with the reunion at the end.

As to the series, I really liked the perspective of seeing the battles from a squad that is at first seemingly insignificant, but then everything went up from there such as building faith and starting to trust others, and mostly to the encounter of the "demon".

For the romance, I felt it was a piece of a bigger puzzle of Shiro and Aina finding themselves being attracted to the "goodness" that still exist despite being at war. I honestly felt more "romance" from the scene where Eledore kept on looking at Karen as he was being driven away by car. The changes on how he treats Karen was rather noticeable, especially the part where he risked his life to become Karen's "monitor". While Shiro's general attitude towards Aina was almost established from the get-go. The focus are just on different "channels", but many things were handled quite wonderfully.

The squad and their encounters had this sense of "fun" that made this anime highly entertaining.

It was an good episode, but yes the final moments of Ep 11 should have been the ending they should have inserted the last clips of Ep 12 a a time skip towards the end of Ep 11.

I don't really know what's the point of the experimented kids. Yes there have been multiple experimented kids that are sent to battle. I don't know what's special about them since they didn't appeared in the main series or any future.

All it showed is Dr. Flanagan's one of many experiment, which i look at the wikia and i didn't even remember him that much in 079.

Wow Shiro and Aina didn't get together and she got pregnant. Tbh i thought we would never see Kiki, but she appeared one more time in the last episode. It was also weird seeing Michel drinking, but i guess he did lost B.B. so it's understandable.

Shame we didn't get to see Karen, Sanders, Eledore. At least show Eledore and Sanders hooking it up :P

Finally I was able to complete all of the side story UC Gundam Animated works!!! Finished Stardust Memory a few weeks ago and now 08th MS.

I give this an 8/10 just like Stardust Memory. I feel the score would have been higher if both series were full TV series as well more detailed story telling.

It appears I'm in the minority here. Sure it was a pretty pointless episode, but I enjoyed it. It would've been nice to see what happened Eledore, Sanders, and Karen, but we got to see where the other characters ended up so I can't complain too much. If there could be an ova for an ova, I think this episode would've been better suited for that, but all in all, I'm glad this was included.

The episode felt like an OAV for a TV series retail release. But it isn't horrible like one could think reading above comments.
It gives a light conclusion to Michel (it was time to get over Brigitte xD), Shiro and Aina (pregnancy made me realized this was several months after "the end".

I had expected more infos about the Flanagan Institute for research on NT but I suppose it wasn't the theme. Still nice to learn they were experimenting on children, but I don't get why those ones loss their memories while Lalah was still sane.
And we can see that some of the "students" are alive and start a better (?) life on Earth instead of being weaponized like the best of them was.

I remember reading on a Gundam forum years ago, that this episode was commissioned several months after the series wrapped production with episode 11. Hence the "End" title at the end of that episode. It also would explain why only 2 of the voice actors returned for episode 12. That still doesn't excuse Last Resort for being a confusing episode that alludes to aspects from other Gundam series' (Cyber Newtypes from Zeta, Flannagan Insti from MSG) and ending with "was it all a dream" with regards to the children.
