However, I understand that a 9/10 anime can sometimes hold a special place in our heart more than a 10/10: it can happen when a specific aspect of the former would be a "11/10", but as a whole it doesn't deserve to be a 10/10. Like when 70% of an anime is a 11/10, but the remaining 30% is mediocre (it usually happens when there are fillers). |

| Not necessarily. I've seen some anime I think are good enough to deserve a 9/10 or even 10/10 but I've enjoyed them less than some which I've rated 8/10 or 7/10. It's just whatever I enjoyed and loved the most. For example, One Piece is in my favourites because I love it but pacing and animation issues dragged its rating down to an 8/10, but Perfect Blue isn't in my favourites despite being a 9/10 because of how hard to watch it is. |

| Initially my Favorites list was my 10/10's list + some 9/10's. I changed that a few years ago because I no longer remembered many anime I had given a 10/10, and decided that my Favorites list should be of anime that "define me the most", so there was even 7/10 anime there at some point (And in the anime 3x3's/4x4's/5x5's I did trying the same objective, possibily even some 6/10's). I still hold that definition, however due to my tastes evolving over time and me re-calibrating my scores from time to time, my Favorites list is of mostly 9/10's and some 10/10's. |

| For me it starts with 8/10, because my favorites range from shows I loved despite noticing flaws to shows I could easily call masterpieces, even with a few flaws there and there. It helps highlighting the fact that I can call an anime a favorite without it necessarily being the best thing ever made (although it of course still has to be great in some way), while also organizing my favorites. |

| In my opinion, they don’t exactly have to be. “Best” and “favorite” aren’t always the same, but people can still view them as the same in every case if they want to. Personally, if I rated an anime an 8/10, I’m still perfectly willing to consider it to be one of my favorites, as long as I truly believe that it is a favorite of mine. Can an anime that I rated a 7.5/10 still be a favorite for me? Yeah, sure, although that would probably be a lot more unlikely. |
| I don't have enough 10/10s to fill all the favorite slots, so... the answer is no. I consider 8s and 9s to be favorites as well, just a lower tier favorite. I find it easy to figure out ratings when I think of it this way. |

| For me, I have to rate an anime at an 8, 9, or 10. I feel like 9's and 10's are self-explanatory - at the time of writing this, I only have 3 10's on my list, so it makes sense that they would all be there. A 9 for me is something that was incredibly emotional impactful, something that had me spellbound from start to finish, something that I want to watch again immediately after finishing it - but was missing some sort of intense personal resonance that all my 10's have for me. Something that makes me still think about them to this day; months and years after completing them. But a 9, obviously, is still spectacular in my book, so of course I would choose from them to be in my favorites. An 8 however, I describe in my rating system as "something that had flaws, but the flaws didn't stand out in a glaring way, or could even be overlooked, because what it did well, it did exceptionally well." Like how, for example, for me, the original Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon was clearly a product of its time and budget, with a lack of originality and the overuse of the same animations in battle sequences, a really uninspired score at times, and running the 'monster of the week' trope into the ground by the end. But that was so overwhelmingly contrasted with superb character interactions (I still think about Usagi and Rei's conversation in the snow about their friendship to this day), amazing voice work by all of the Sailor Guardians' seiyuu, and a finale of three episodes that just felt so perfectly emotionally stirring that they transcended the anime's space and time for me. Maybe I was blinded by the nostalgic feeling it gave me, maybe it's because I cry at literally everything (lol), but it was so beautiful to me that it deserved an 8 in my eyes. And is therefore what I would consider "favorite eligible", as opposed to 9's which I consider "likely favorites", and 10's as "automatic favorites". I feel like any number lower than that, though, doesn't deserve to be in my favorites list. I like the way Hikool put it as well~ |

| It depends on what you mean by "a favorite anime". If you're referring to the type of list built-in as a feature to the website which you can fill with different anime entries on your profile page, then some MAL members have open space for 10. Others - the elite patrons, myself included, have 20 slots allotted there. Then you could theoretically even have a slightly or greatly larger favorite list manually created up to whichever number you desire, be it a top 30, top 50, top 100, or whatever. I have 20 favorites filled out on my profile and then a more crude and custom extended Top 50 I'd all consider favorites. Everything in my Top 10 is either a 10/10 or a 9/10. If you go past those to the next 10 which comprise my Top 20, there is another 10/10 there and the rest mostly 9/10s still but also a few 8/10s. Once you get past that point, into my #s 20 - 50, there are many 8/10s and even some 7/10s. |
