This OP is soo good for dazai and Oda . Nailed it with all the darkness cause Dazai's backstory isn't a happy one at all, and everyone can see that. I think the visuals might only change in the guild arc, but who knows they may still go with a totally new OP .

Not quite what I was expecting but interesting nonetheless. I just hope we get story progression that continues where the last left off D: I mean the end means at least one more episode about the past. I don't mind getting to know more about Dazai but I really want to know how the story continues.

I loved this, better than the entire 1st season.
Dazai is still most interesting character in this anime and I'm happy he gets an own backstory arc. First episode makes me want more.

Hopefully they don't spend too many episodes on the backstory.

I don't mind backstories but I also want to see what happens after season one's ending.

I still haven't watched the episode in full detail, but let me clarify some things first:

As you may know, episode 6 and 7 from S1 were an adaptation for the 1st Light Novel of Bungou Stray Dogs, called "Osamu Dazai's Entrance Exam". I'll just say that they butchered the whole adaptation, since, to begin with, it actually happens 2 years before the main plot.

They didn't "butcher it", they just chose to take a different route with where it fit within the continuity, and I think it worked better since Kunikida and Dazai already had that chemistry together. People and their silly "if it isn't exactly following the source material, it's butchering" nonsense. If an adaptation plays with the source material and changes things while still retaining the same spirit of the source material and still telling a good story, then it's irrelevant.

Anyhow, this was a fairly strong start. I do think some of the mystery explanations were kind of farfetched and out there, though in general anime seems to have a problem with mysteries. I really did like in particular the final scene, with the blood dripping from Dazai's face, as it actually made the mystery explanation for that kind of work. The point was that he was coming up with some convoluted explanation as a means of hiding his true desire for death. Before that point in time, at the very least, during the flashback, he's talked about suicide and his desire for death, but never outright shown putting himself in such great danger in front of his comrades (keep in mind how he seems to make it clear in the first season he's more fascinated with the idea of suicide, but not so much at the idea of getting killed). So it's really interesting to see. There were a couple of questionable scenes involving that little girl, but thankfully the series doesn't dwell on it for too long.

I adored the shot composition in this episode, as they really go to show Takuya Igarashi's talents. One shot in particular looked blatantly in the vein of Utena. The show's use of color during the Flawless scene was absolutely on point, and the darker tone the series gave off this episode really goes show how much different Dazai's past life was in comparison to how it is now that he's left.

While it did fall into some trappings that I was hoping it'd avoid (overly long, convoluted mystery explanations, some occasionally jarring humor), the series is definitely off to a strong start, and I hope the quality of the second season only gets better from here. Especially with how much the first season kept improving as it went on.

Well, I'll just reply on spoiler tag for those who want to actually read the novel, and you will see that it's not about "taking a different route".

So instead of assuming I'm complaining because it's not exactly as the novel, please get your information right before hand, like actually reading the novel yourself, or at least don't start assuming I'm complaining for the sake of doing so. Because, you know, it's an adaptation, so it's obvious won't be the exact same, that's what adaptation means: To adapt a work into another format (from novel to animation in this case).

And just so you know, I'm not actually complaining about the current adaptation because they are doing a really good job so far (and yeah, they cut out/changed a bit some parts, but they weren't absolutely relevant so it's nonsense to complain about that)

I'm wondering how many episodes they're going to dedicate to Dazai's past. I'm a dumbass and a half but I never knew that Dazai was part of Port Mafia? I never read the manga either so this was news to me. He was suicidal even long before. He never changed.

Well that was...disappointing. There's none of the humor from the first season, and I wanted to see the show progress, and not be a backstory. *sigh* I found myself pretty bored with this. I'm really disappointed. Lots of comments saying this was better than the first season, but I just don't see it.

I don't know if this had been posted yet, but one interesting fact is that Ango Sakaguchi, Osamu Dazai and Sakunosuke Oda (the writers, not the characters) were grouped together as 'buraiha' or decadent school, due to their similar subject matters and style in their works.

Back to the topic, I was surprised by the change of tone, and this is shaping up to be good!

Just a quick hypothesis,

Has any of you noticed Odasaku looks a whole lot like Sebastian from The Evil Within?

The haircut, the grizzled face, even the trench coat?!

I also noticed the similarities between Odasaku's name and Joseph. His last name is ODA.

The Evil Within is also available in Japan as "Psyco Break".

The author may have inspired Odasaku from The Evil Within (?)

Or it's just a very big coincidence and He was inspired by the writer "Oda Sakunosuk"...

i have to say this is pretty great. barely any sniffings of the terrible humor of last season is here, and the atmosphere change is a breath of fresh air, ironic considering how dark it is. i didn't like any of the characters last season especially dazai, but i may come to like him in this arc, however long it lasts. i think the reason why everyone appreciates this episode so much is because we don't have the weak whiney MC who adds horrible comedy and needless narration of the obvious lol.

i'm not sure at all this season will be as great as this episode, but for what it's worth this episode gets a 10, no matter what happens in the future.

It seems that Dazai was more ruthless when he was a member of Port Mafia.
All weebs creatures of the galaxy, hear this message. Those of you who listen will not be struck by western animation. You will no longer know hunger, nor pain. Your Anime have come to lead you now. Our strength shall serve as a luminous sun toward which all intelligence may blossom. And the impervious shelter beneath which you will prosper. In the past, Dazai went to a bar with two friends of him, Oda and Ango (Port Mafia). Ogai Mori called Oda for a mission, apparently Ango disappeared and he needs to find out what happened. Hirotsu informed Dazai that someone assaulted the weapon warehouse, Dazai revealed an organization named Mimic. Oda went to Ango's room to investigate, and after taking a box from the room's roof, a sniper shoot him, some guys started to chase him and Oda called Dazai for help, at the end, they were connected with Mimic, and the box had a gun (Mimic), also there's something wrong about Ango's last deal.

After I watched the first season, I thought it was just fine and I had no interest in the second, but somehow, this season got interest and recognition, so I decided to give it a chance, I see that they forgot about the detectives and it turned more to a mafia plot, at least this episode, and starting with the past.

A quite good prequel / flashback episode. It would have been great if we had been spared that utterly ridiculous scene where Dazai was (purportedly) so super bad ass that a hundred or so machine gun bullets did not even dare touch him despite standing a few feet away directly in front of the machine guns..

His henchmen were falling right beside him but he remained supposedly defiant. No, not suicidal, if he was truly suicidal he would have died long ago; that's just his quirk apparently, which after 13 episodes has quite frankly grown tiresome..

In the face of a clear mortal danger you cannot be both defiant and suicidal at the same time; one will have to give, and in the case of Dazai (judging from that episode alone) what should have given is his life. Dazai's gift has absolutely nothing to do with scaring bullets away or being healed from multiple mortal wounds like Atsushi, so I truly hope we are spared such unfortunate scenes in the future..

Am I the only one that doesnt like how this anime is split? They are interjecting past stories (the novels) while in the middle of a current story....
The first one last season was I think episode 6 and 7? Right in the middle of an arc... and now they show the first episode of the next arc and then do this? Come on.
