Goooood evening, fellow MAL users~ ✿
This thread's creation probably won't come as a surprise to those who tried to recommend me anime and manga with some flowers in it. (Still looking for more recommendations, by the way!) This thread will also probably be all over the place with thoughts and examples, and apparently my last thread had complaints of it being too long to read for the majority of MAL users... so I will get straight to the point and present the discussion questions early. The rest of the thread will just be lots of text sharing my love for anime depictions of flowers, so I would to share my gratitude towards the generous few who decide to spend some quality time reading it all in advance. These kinds of users are those who motivate me in doing my best to deliver some quality threads.

Seriously, thank you for reading if you're one of those few.

✿ It's time to share the flower love~ ✿

Fellow MALers (?), what are some of your favorite examples of floral imagery in anime and manga?

And here are some related questions you may answer as well:
  • Why is the example(s) you posted a favorite for you?
  • How were flowers used in the example(s) you would like to mention? Did flower language/symbolism play a role for it?
  • Do you have a particular bias for a specific flower? Did this specific flower that you like appear in your example(s)?
  • What flower do you want to see featured in more anime? Any underrepresented picks? Are you tired of seeing people always using roses lol
  • Did the example(s) in question introduce to you a flower you had never seen/heard before up to that point?

What better way to begin my thoughts on this topic than by mentioning Cardcaptor Sakura?

CLAMP's original 1996 magical girl manga was my first experience into the medium, so it has a special place in my heart and I can't help but talk about it first. This manga features flowers everywhere, from typical shoujo flower drawings decorating many of the pages to details such as the brief character bios on the sides of the physical manga volumes mentioning the character's favorite flower. Just naming a single example in the whole series wouldn't be enough, as even the manga's sequel in 2016, Clear Card, continues with CLAMP's attention to detail towards floral imagery within the pages.

One aspect about this manga that I didn't realize and appreciate until I was much older is the variety of flowers featured throughout the artwork. Many shoujo manga like to have some stock roses to decorate the pages here and there, and you'd think that a series titled in the way that it is would have a ton of sakura, or cherry blossoms. But cherry blossoms are just one of the many types of flora around here, with there being so many that I can't even specifically identify because I'm admittedly not that knowledgeable on flowers (even with my love of them) haha.

It turns out the variety of floral decoration was done on purpose, as CLAMP stated this on the Cardcaptor Sakura: Memorial Book:
You really do set all the details. Does this mean you also chose the backgrounds and the tone treatment?

Ohkawa: Because I wanted the series to have a soft feel, I asked them to not use a lot of ink, to make the pages light. A lot of the readers thought that we were cutting corners since the pages were so white. I asked Nekoi to make it “soft, cute-like.”
Nekoi: But I didn’t have experience with “cute-like” so…
Igarashi: And all those flowers, it must’ve been so hard. I’m impressed. *laughs*
Nekoi: I looked hard for flowers we could use. I went through dictionaries, doing my best to find appropriate flowers. *laughs* I was trying to avoid using the same flower more than once in one chapter.
Igarashi: We’ve never had to draw so many flowers for one series. *laughs*
Nekoi: There’s surprisingly few flowers that can be drawn cutely.

Are there any flowers that you remember especially?

Nekoi: If you draw sunflowers the picture ends up looking idiotic. *laughs* I think we didn’t use them more than once. Also, we had a lot of scenes where the boys were backed up by flowers. That was the hardest of all. We didn’t want to use roses. *laughs*
Source: Chibi Yuuto's CHRoNiCLEs

I never even noticed that there were little to no roses throughout the whole manga! Guess I'll have to keep an eye out the next time I re-read it ^_^

The series's 1998 anime adaptation by Madhouse also doesn't disappoint with the floral imagery.

⋆ ✿ ⋆ ✿ ⋆

I can't talk about this one too much due to S P O I L E R S, but I'd like to also mention Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion.

This 2013 film features flowers a lot more than the original Madoka Magica series (or its recap films) ever did. I don't think I can ever discuss about them without ruining them or outright spoiling them, so I'll just leave a spoiler tag and call it a day. The most I can say outside of the tag is that I had never seen nor heard of spider lilies before watching it. It's quite a pretty flower.

Seriously, go watch this movie for yourself. Even if you hate the ending, you can't deny that it's a visual treat.

⋆ ✿ ⋆ ✿ ⋆

I feel like this first post is starting to get into the ridiculously-too-huge-for-everyone territory.
So to wrap up my thoughts (and this post), lemme quickly mention some rapidfire examples into a simple list.

✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶

Now it's your turn, everyone!
Scroll up if you need the questions again, I gave y'all the tl;dr first this time, so no excuses for not reading!!

Happy discussing!!!

Edit 12/8/21: Decided to retitle thread to fit the "let's talk!" brand I got going over here and here.

If I recall correctly they show up in anime like Demon Slayer and Inuyasha

Also, there are these flowers. Forgot the name or anime it came from but these look lovely too.

The first one that comes to my mind is Mononoke:

The whole aesthetic of this anime is unique but I don't really know if I can recommend it to you based solely off of that fact, if you're into the Horror genre and want to learn more about Japanese myths and Folklore I would be sure not to miss out on this one.

I'll try answering some of your questions:

I actually don't really have a favorite flower and I don't focus on that when I'm watching anything, but I can surely appreciate when its uniquely presented. There is some meaning in the presentation of flowers in Mononoke but I wouldn't make it sound like it has some really big impact in the show, some bits here and there I guess.

Actually yeah we should have a solid use of flowers to spruce up the scenes if nothing else, I found Ghibli movies to have some of the best use of flowers, like the person above me put into a gif Spirited Away, but u can see the use of them in so many more works like for example:

Kiki's delivery service:

How's moving castle:

I'd honestly go on with other movies but I don't want to fucking bombard you with images and take up space in the replies... but if you need some more recommendations, Made in Abyss uses some really cool flower shots iirc, I haven't seen this one yet but I know for sure that Mushishi won't disappoint in it's use of flowers as well.

I just checked your previous discussion and I'm surprised that no one recommended you Chihayafuru anime/manga or Takane no Ran-san manga. Well, both are almost unknown and far from the mainstream sphere, Chihayafuru only being noticed because of a pathetic score manipulation and Takane no Ran-san having less than 2,000 members as of now.

Chihayafuru is about karuta and its hundred traditional poems, a sport that united Chihaya and her friends during their childhood. Visually, flowers aren't always animated, but symbolically, they convey essential inspiration and imagination for the characters, being the focus of many poems. Overall, nature (seasons, trees, mountains, flowers) is one of the most prominent thematic of the hundred poems.

In Takane no Ran-san, the flowers are basically the background of this romantic story, what bring all the lovable characters together. The flowers almost give a charming scent to the atmosphere of each chapter, each one being centered about a specific flower and its literal and symbolical meaning. Therefore, everything subtly flows in concordance with the flowers messages and characteristics.

I hope this will be helpful!

I think this is the only example I know but the flower used everywhere in Anohana is called a "forget me not" flower. As the name suggests, it symbolises how people should remember to never forget their loved ones.

Roses are very important in Revolutionary Girl Utena, it would take me forever to explain it, even harder to without spoiling you. So I really urge you to, as you say, watch it asap!! This article/blog on the rose in Utena is very good, it does have spoilers, lots and lots of spoilers, so either skim through it or wait until youve watched the show to read it.

Also, I can't forget Gintama with Hedoro lmao

I wasted all my time in rewatching to the point of my rewatch total is higher than my overall anime total lmao

I swear there was a show built around flower language or had it as a trivia.
I can't remember it unfortunately, it was on tv back in the day.
the two shows in recent memory that had things to do with flowers were
darling in the franxx, the mechas were named after flowers and incorporated them in their designs. I don't recommend this show in any case.
the other one was https://myanimelist.net/anime/38483/Ore_wo_Suki_nano_wa_Omae_dake_ka_yo
everyone had flower nicknames. it was entertaining.

I always enjoy the huge amount of realistic detail and accuracy some illustrators put into drawing flowers.

Whenever I catch one of those flower moments I try to keep a good copy for myself. And when they are actually animated:

It sort of makes up for the relative lack of detailed depictions of animals, especially in movement.

Ah, Mononoke. Seems to have some kind of cult following based on what I heard about it. Those are some great pictures you found, it seems that Ghibli's The Tale of the Princess Kaguya shares a similar aesthetic with it. With that and you mentioning some kind of unique presentation in this show, I guess I'll have to watch Mononoke for myself sometime in the future.
Thanks for answering some of my side-questions by the way :)

Heard lots of praise about Chihayafuru, but I don't think I have ever heard of Ran the Peerless Beauty before! Just checked out the first chapter earlier, it was a bit difficult because I couldn't easily find it in English and I haven't improved on my lackluster Spanish in a long time; based on what I read it looks and sounds exactly like what I'm looking for, especially because it actually features some flower language, which is something I hardly ever see in anime/manga! Thank you so very much!! ♥

Moruna said:

Yes, the flowers were definitely used to present some kind of symbolism in some of my examples.
Some of them were maybe symbols of young love (1.), perhaps warmth and happiness (5.) or some could be heralds of death(7.)
But in most of them, I think they are only there to make the scene/drawing look even better than it already does (2., 3., 4., 6.)
Thanks for sharing all those pictures you found!! You have sold me on Yousei Florence and Tongari Boushi no Memole... why do 80s anime like these and Creamy Mami look so magical? Is it because of how sparkles are drawn and animated in there? Is it because of the specific dreamy color schemes? Is it their budgets lol??

What flower do you want to see featured in more anime? Any underrepresented picks? Are you tired of seeing people always using roses lol

I don't know tbh lol. Maybe lilac or honeysuckle, but I wouldn't get sad if they don't. And yes, I agree about the roses part, they could try tulips sometimes lol. They can be red, as many other flowers too. :D
I don't think I see honeysuckles that much (other than maybe Cardcaptor Sakura lol) in anime or manga... that's a good pick!
AND YES! Someone gets me with tulips! Red tulips are just as great, if not better, flowers to use for romantic cases... I mean, they literally symbolize "everlasting love" for goodness' sake!!!!

Now, I just want to say, what a lovely thread OP.
I really enjoyed trying to remember, search for the examples and answer to your questions.
I must say I really like the dedication you put in your threads and I like reading them from time to time.
They are always a breath of fresh air in the sea of average, but annoyingly common threads on this forum.
Please, keep on making discussions like this in the future too and don't let the haters stop you from it.
I'm most of the time just an one-liner on the forums, but threads like yours makes me want to actually try to better participate in discussions.
You are one of the rare users here who try to use more than two words when creating a discussion or when answering to other threads.
Wish you the best of luck with the future thread ideas too! This one was very cute.
This message you left at the end of your post means so much to me that I cannot put it into words. It makes me very happy when these kinds of threads actually encourage people to pay attention to something that they may not have thought about before finding the thread and make detailed replies in response. Thank you so very much for your sentiments Moruna.

...why do 80s anime like these and Creamy Mami look so magical?

I also don't know tbh, could be all the reasons you've named. In the past it looks like people wanted to make something good. Something that makes others awe. Something that will last. Today, they do it too, but you can feel some kind of lack of dedication in their works.
Or it could just be that we grew up with cel animations and stuff made that way looks wonderful to us lol.
Reading "lack of dedication" here kinda makes me a little sad inside haha...

I don't think I see honeysuckles that much (other than maybe Cardcaptor Sakura lol) in anime or manga... that's a good pick!

I need to check Cardcaptor Sakura then. It's on my ptw for a long period. I really need to find time to at least start it. :D
Yup, tulips are simply wonderful and imo far more easier to draw or animate too, but ya know, we need only roses and sakuras everywhere, so who cares about other flowers, they are not that important. :P

Yeah, definitely go check it out! I don't think the anime featured them (the anime's still good though), but I don't remember where exactly I remember seeing honeysuckles in the manga, so sorry if it turns out that there weren't any. Pretty sure I remember seeing one though, but hey, not to worry, as I stated earlier, the manga at least features plenty of other flowers to feast your eyes on. I don't hate roses or cherry blossoms (in fact, I think this manga actually made sakuras one of if not my sole favorite flowers), but it is sad that it's mainly those two that gets some time in the spotlight :(

This message you left at the end of your post means so much to me that I cannot put it into words

I'm not to good on flower language. I will be happy if someone reccomend me website or book about this topic.

Also i think everyone almost forget Violet Evergarden. Literary every characters name was taken from flower name. Here my favourite use of flower on Violet Evergarden.

I love the way they use white camelia in this episodes. It can be translated as pure and inoccent. Also maternal love perfect suite for this episodes

Oh sweet discussion about flowers, I'm in.

I can't straight up remember many examples of flowers, maybe I don't focus on them enough. But I remember one that hasn't been posted here from Tokyo Ghoul ending, so I'll use that for discussion.

Someone also posted Makoto Takahashi's art here and if anyone is a fan of retro shoujo better check his illustrations. They're amazingly detailed and the way he uses flowers is just amazing.

I must also say if I see spider lilies I immediately think about Inuyasha.

Why is the example(s) you posted a favorite for you?
I like how peonies are drawn in it even tho they're unnaturally tall and straight lol gimme that variety and I think they fit the image and characters. There's also that one some kind of verbena flower (from what I can tell) that isn't as glamorous as peonies, but it has its own meaning.

How were flowers used in the example(s) you would like to mention? Did flower language/symbolism play a role for it?
Hm flower language does play a role in it. Peonies irc both in West and East symbolize rich/luxurious lifestyle, glamour and often associated with royalty. And for verbena I'm not 100% sure what its meaning in the East is, but in the West it symbolizes creativity, happiness and health.

Do you have a particular bias for a specific flower? Did this specific flower that you like appear in your example(s)?
Roses I guess. Some peonies are ok like fernleaf peony but the variety in the image is some Chinese peony and I'm not fan of those tbh.

What flower do you want to see featured in more anime? Any underrepresented picks? Are you tired of seeing people always using roses lol
Oh plenty. I want to see more evergreens and not only flowering plants. As an example hiba that are native in Japan have decorative leaves too. For flowers common zinnia, scabiosa, heliotrope, horse chestnut, common lantana, passion, persian onion, snapdragon... I think that's enough of a list.

And about roses, instead of me being tired of them (since they're my favorite plants) I'm more tired and irritated how people use modern roses even when it would be inaccurate. There is so much variety in roses, huge amount of native species like native in Japan Japanese rose has simple flower, then compare it to its varieties cultivated in Europe 'Snow Pavement'/'Schneekoppe' and 'Ritausma'. Redleaf rose looks completely different from other species and from moss roses 'Nuits de Young' is all time favorite of mine. If anything I'm tired of seeing Grandiflora roses and Hybrid tea roses, because goddamn when Marie Antoinette was alive those roses didn't even exist and rather in Europe old garden roses were cultivated like Rosa gallica. Yes, the last one is a rant about Rose of Versailles.

Did the example(s) in question introduce to you a flower you had never seen/heard before up to that point?
No. I'd say I'm pretty knowledgeable on flowers. I actually like to try recognize flowers in shows to test my skills lol.

For British Flower language this website has decent amount of flowers and this one has also listed color differences. Language of Flowers by Kate Greenaway is a good dictionary for Victorian era meanings.

5 Centermetrs per second for me personally and here's a excerpt from a review i've done from it a while ago.

The title of the film refers to the speed that cherry blossoms fall. From the movie perspective, it represents the slow pace of life.

It deals with deep connections people make with childhood friends and how they drift apart because of life’s circumstances. Even though they may connect via social media, they still pine for the physical connection and the deep bond they once shared. The 3 parts represents different stages of life.

My dad's more into gardening than i am so thats my thoughts about it but i still find it really interesting visual metaphor.

I can only think of one example, but I really like this one and it's from Kakegurui.

I like this example not only because I ship these two characters (for people who have never watched or read Kakegurui, the left one is Kirari and the right one is Sayaka, who has a romantic interest in Kirari. In the anime and manga Kirari prepares a building called the Tower of Doors which is surrounded by white lilies, and it's believed that she builds this place particularly for Sayaka), but because it's simply beautiful and romantic.

I think the lily flowers have multiple meanings here. First, the literal translation of lily is yuri in Japanese, which symbolizes the romantic love between Kirari and Sayaka. Second, the flower language of lily is commitment, which represents the loyalty of Sayaka to Kirari. Third, another well-known meaning of lily is purity, and the literal translation of Sayaka's name in Kanji (清華) is "pure flower", and white lily is the perfect type of flower to represent her.

currently reading boku no chikyuu wo mamotte and the flowers are everywhere, the moon characters are named after flowers and the main girl makes flowers/plants grow when she sings, she can also communicate with them, it's a beautiful manga/anime with a mysterious vybe. I think the lotus is the most important in the story, there is a character named mokuren/moku ren who is the central character in the plot

Wow, that looks like a really nice picture!! I've never heard of this artist before. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, that's quite a lot of flowers haha... you're quite knowledgeable! I've never even heard of some of these before; had to look up scabiosa and common lantana, and I didn't know what horse chestnuts or Persian onions looked like. They all look so beautiful!!

Not sure if anyone can tell from the way I worded that last part on roses, but... no, I don't hate roses. I still think that they are really nice looking flowers. I just feel like it's overused and there's so much more flowers out there that people could try giving a shout-out to instead. Like this flower in the 8th episode of Bottle Fairy.

I could never figure out the name of this flora for the longest time. They never say what kind of flower it is in the whole episode, as the characters just refer to it as "Hanana" (very cute nickname XD). The closest I got to figuring out what flower this was is "sedum telephium", but even so I still don't know for sure if that is the right flower. Sure looks like it though. (This episode of Bottle Fairy is also a nice example of flowers in anime in general, can't believe I didn't even mention it in my original post...)
But yeah, whatever flower this is, sedum telephium or not, I think it'd be cool to see more of it in anime.

...Oh and thanks for talking about those other roses, didn't know redleaf roses existed. Once again, it's great to learn about more flowers.

Not my favourite Sailor Moon film by a long shot, but I really appreciate the imagery and symbolism in it.

You brought me right back haha, I surprisingly haven't rewatched any Sailor Moon movies yet. I did like how flowers and meadows were depicted in the movie, and the way flower-giving was used into the plot was pretty heartwarming to me back when I watched this as a young kid. I hope to rewatch it sometime soon, I wanna see if it aged well or not.

I also really like the petals frequently accompanying Haruka and Michiru, I suppose they represent their maturity and they add a really classy touch.
I agree, I really loved how those petals (and that theme whenever they showed up in their civilian forms hahahaha) helped make them seem a lot more different from the other Sailor Senshi.

Thats right! the movie is refering to the symbolic meaning of the sakura petals falling refering to the slow pace of life and how others eventually fall away from each other as time goes by and you're very much welcome Fario! :)

I highly recommend please save my earth, the volumes are easy to read, the manga has big panels and the text flows quickly. I read it one volume a time and it takes me 50-70 minutes but most importantly, the story will surely hook you.
I have to tell you something in regards to the content, it's kinda strong. Never mind the situation where a 7 year old boy is in love with a 16 year old girl, there's a sex scene which almost falls in the category of rape. I don't really know your prefferences if you hate thing like these, but I still recommend it, it has great moments and the characters are great to follow, lots of feelings and emotions in this manga.

there are a lot of nice landscape scenes and some with flowers...etc.

but just due to the nature of the show, and what it's about.

girl is color blind.. i can't remember, but i think it had something to do with magic deficiency or something or another.

and she starts to see color again from this dude's paintings.

it was a really pretty anime.

The the Rosenkreuz Manssion arc in Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo had some interesting visual ideas. For example the rooms in the mansion were named after different roses. Everything in a room: drapes, sheets, towels...had a distinguished logo of this certain type of rose.
The building was shaped like a cross but inside was like a labyrinth.
A maze of roses surrounded it.

Sadly can't find good pictures from it.

@Fario-P It's my pleasure to talk about flowers, especially about roses.

I actually just today watched short animation Dojoji Temple and was pleasantly surprised, since it included forsythia bush. Weird it isn't that commonly used even in background art considering most species of that genus are native to eastern Asia... I'll include that too to my flower list.

Utawarerumono (his throne room doubling as a water garden of special flowers grown on the bodies of humans)

Jujutsu Kaisen - hanami flowers growing within the bodies of the students.

Dororo - Spider Lily flowers

Basically I have seen several anime with flowers growing on or within living people. But can't recall the titles.

The manga Hell's Paradise Jigokuraku had some pretty but also really creepy flower imagery. I know this thread focuses on pretty flowers but the following images can be sorta disturbing. I hope the anime does it justice :)

Here are some examples (might be disturbing and small spoilers for the manga):

Firstly, apologies, since I don't know much about flower language/symbolism and the like, I just thought all of these examples I'm about to list were pretty, I guess

Kasen Ibara, as her name implies, seems to be associated with roses, although I can't think of any specific examples right now, other than the rose and vine pattern on her... IDK what you'd call it, a tabard or an apron, maybe?

Speaking of Touhou, the 9th game, Phantasmagoria of Flower View was all about flowers. Lots of lily-of-the-valley symbolism, since one of the new characters introduced in it was a shinigami and lillies-of-the-valley are associated with death (I believe). The game was adapted as the 4th(?) episode of Memories of Phantasm I don't care about MAL's database guidelines, this is definitely an anime, lol

Anyways, my favorite flower imagery would be any time Giorno uses his Stand, Golden Wind (Gold Experience) to make plants, especially

Probably a pretty "normie" response, but I'll also mention the rose from COWBOY BEBOP

I agree about Madoka Magica Part Three's animation being really nice even if, yeah, I did hate the ending (and basically everything else about the movie). Sorry, Madoka fans but I didn't really notice the flowers (aside from in the scenes in the garden, which I'm pretty sure were symbolic). That's probably just because I wasn't really looking out for them, though, since, as you mentioned, flowers weren't really prevalent in the original show

Bloom Into You is filled to the brim with flower imagery and theming. The OP is basically like if someone took the entire contents of a florist’s shop and dumped it all on a high school classroom, and the title itself refers to how the main character feels being a late-bloomer, so to speak.

Oh wait who's that? It's best poster Fario-P, posting about flowers, again.

Don't care too much about flowers but I have seen some use for it, and even without "sYmBolisM" they look nice and can be used to add colour or frame a scene nicely, I'd drop the ones I can remember right now.

Best use of flowers is of course without a doubt, spamming your anime with lilies and cherry blossoms to tell your audience that "they're not just friends, this is a lesbian romance". Because of course, all you need to sell a straight romance is the presence of a guy and a girl and that immediately creates the potential of romance in the viewer's mind, but a gay romance? You better hammer that shit in non-stop, not looking at any show specifically *cough* assault lily bouquet *cough*.

- "Hey man, what imagery should we feature in the Kanbaru arc opening"
- "Idk what's it about"
- "Gay girl in love"
- "Just make the characters jump around on giant lilies"
- "Nice, that sounds pretty gay".

Also, HA, I see an opportunity to shill Fate cooking here THE BEST FATE SHOW.
In Fate cooking when people eat some good food, a small wall of pastel flowers will appear around them as if the meal just created in them a visible flowery aura, none of that screaming "Oiiiiihiiiiii", "Ummmaaiii" or other complimentary words that really do nothing to the viewer other than cause irritation due to the repetitiveness of the trop. Fate cooking understands food appreciation, a small smile and approving nod towards the cook followed by a nice layering of flowers to represent the good mood and pleasant atmosphere created.

Casshern Sins is also top of the flower game, 10/10 flowers, a show about life and death, about purpose and meaning, of course you're going to use flowers as imagery because flowers grow, bloom and die and their ephemeral quality almost makes the more beautiful, like seeing a flower bloom is a privilege and you should cherish it. Cause that's the show's take on life, you're born, you bloom and you die and there's beauty in that, am I sounding super pretentious right now, good cause that's Casshern Sins, slow, pretentious, beautiful and full of flowers.

You know that bit in The dark knight returns where Superman tries crawls towards a flower after taking on an atomic missile and as he touches it dies and he starts to die as well, it was a good moment right? Imagine that but all the time, through 24 episodes.
I mean I think flowers and nature in general used to represent life is pretty common.

Seriously, open up your search engine of choice and look up "Casshern Sins Flowers".

Hey there's that fucking amazing scene in the Daion IV animation where the entire world gets filled with grass, trees and flowers, look fantastic, watch Daicon IV.
Shoutout, everyone watch Daicon IV before we lose it forever, then watch Cassette Girl, thank me later.

Other than that you could probably watch any show from PA works cause I know they have a massive hard on for flowers. Made in Abyss also went through some effort to create a different world in the abyss and that included the flowers and nature which was cool.

Chihayafuru 3 took the first ranking spot during the time it was airing back in 2019, a time that also saw the rise of Vinland Saga. As soon as the latter was edged by the former, mainstream watchers and some hardcore fans of the Seinen manga trashed Chihayafuru 3 score to the point it even reached 6.XX if I remember well (two points lost more or less). It was a pathetic move, but it also made a little more people aware of Chihayafuru's existence. The score of the third season was readjusted many times weeks and months later, and although it has a very good one as of now, I'm sure it could've been way higher without all this dumb drama.

I don't care about scores nor do I think they're often representative of quality, although I respect people thinking they're an objective measure of quality, but I never expected they could trigger an entire community so hard.

If you want more information, here's this gigantic thread for you, but I think I summarized the situation very well overall, as I was present during that laughable time.

Seriously, open up your search engine of choice and look up "Casshern Sins Flowers".
Heard of that show before, is it worth watching?
The character designs just reek of typical Umakoshi (obviously not a bad thing), it's no wonder people recommended this show with HeartCatch PreCure lol
Also I've just looked your term up, there's lots of pretty pictures!! Thanks again!

Btw, @Fario-P How much time does it take you to make a thread ? Like write everything with all the embedded links and pics and stuff, You and Rob7's threads are probably the most effortful threads I see on this site so I was just curious
Hahaha you're not the first to ask me this question, and of course, as this usually goes, you won't be the last..... uhh, I never really keep track of how long it usually takes for me to make a thread, but... I'd say it does take at least an hour or two? Just several hours of typing and watching random YouTube videos in the middle of it and stuff lol. I like to make my introductory posts of a new thread like a well-polished video essay on YouTube, which is why these are all usually a huge wall of text with the occasional nice picture.

Thank you for sharing your examples by the way! ^_^
I don't recognize the user Rob7 you mentioned, maybe I'll check out their threads...

Okay so apparently there are two different threads with this.

Copypasting my response to the other thread:

Heartcatch Pretty Cure - heart flowers and flower symbolism are a major theme in this show. All the cures also have flower motifs.

Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de aru - flower motifs from different species are used for each of the lead characters, and flowers also serve an important symbolic purpose in the narrative.

Lesser instances:

The Price of Smiles - sunflowers are a prominent symbol and serve as a metaphor.

Celestial Method - sunflowers are prominently featured in some shots here.

Kowarekake no Orgel - one main character is named "Flower", because she is found holding a flower. Aside from this there isn't much flower symbolism.

Eureka Seven - one prominent character is named Anemone, probably after the flower. There's also a noteworthy scene involving her and flowers.

Kiddy Grade - there are a few scenes with strong relevance to the story in a mid-series episode involving a girl who offers the lead character some flowers.

Sailor Moon - Tuxedo Mask. 'Nuff said.

Ms. Vampire who lives in my neighborhood. - a very weak example, but the opening theme's animation seems to like flowers.

Planetarian - technically not even an example, but it's noteworthy that the "bouquet" is actually made up of various electronic components.

The entire Yuuki Yuuna (a.k.a. Yuki Yuna) series heavily uses floral imagery as a theme (and
) for its main characters and their abilities.

I'm surprised it didn't get another mention in this thread.
Yeah, I'm surprised that no one else even mentioned YuYuYu either.
Wasn't even aware that you liked that show to begin with (unless I just forgot again.....) tbh.
I do like the show, but I haven't watched any more of its franchise, for whatever reason.
Avatar character is Gabriel from Gabriel DropOut.

@Mirabem Thanks for the info, this doesn't actually seem too far off from the standard Mal pettiness, some avid fans get way too involved when something new comes along to "threaten" the top shows. It does feel like with how consistently stellar Chihayafuru has been in all aspects, the ratings of later seasons should compete with shows like Haikyuu, Ippo or Sangatsu, but if the ordeal gave it exposure I'm not going to complain.

@Fario-P I do mean that unironically.

Obviously from my point of view, Casshern Sins is worth watching (have you seen my favourites list) but since we don't have that big of an affinity and don't have a lot of shows in common on our lists (and certainly not any similar to Casshern Sins) I don't know how much weight my recommendation will hold.

For what it's worth, the top review is actually quite good and if you have seen other slow paced episodic shows where every episode kinda has a specific point or morale of sorts then you sort of know what you're getting into. I often say that Casshern Sins is depressing Aria, not because I watched Aria but because the way fans talk about Aria is the same as how my brother and I talk about Casshern Sins, just bringing up specific episodes or moments from the show and thinking about what they mean for us and how they relate to the rest of the show. I don't think it's particularly complex, but it has a level of subtlety in the character interactions and contemplative moments that I appreciate and for what it's worth, the show looks amazing and has top tier OST, sound effects and voice acting that all enhance the atmosphere.
I guess if you're interested just watch a couple of episodes, if you don't like it at the start you won't like it at the end, it doesn't change.

there's also this part where chise dropped flowers into a pond

of course, there's a lot more but these are the ones i can currently think of.

These are just beautiful with context rly

And the favorite one would be the hill of Sunflowers from Subahibi
(not a manga or anime, butprobably my favorite so I had to share)

I won't elaborate anything because that would probably enter spoiler territory so read subahibi and Umineko, I promise it's well worth it

Also i think everyone almost forget Violet Evergarden. Literary every characters name was taken from flower name.

You've hit the nail right on the head there. Violet Evergarden (one of may favourite shows) was something that portrayed identity, self-exploration and growth really well.

As @KMSpico mentioned, most of the characters are named after flowers, and therefore there are quite a number of scenes with flowers in them - whether it be a lone drooping violet at the side of a road, or expansive shots of lilies in full bloom - that tie into the narrative.

I'm not someone who knows flower symbology, and I don't even know half of their names, so I feel I'm not qualified enough to able to explain much, so here are some pictures to show you what I mean -

EDIT - btw, really nice topic, OP.

EDIT 2 - I'm sick and tired of looking at sakura or "cherry blossoms" or whatever, I know they're pretty but they're so overused that they make me roll my eyes now.
