Updated (date: 6th Feb 2025): Finished Hunter x Hunter anime! Also thinking of changing the profile completely.
How I get into anime and yuri: When I was a kid I loved watching cartoon like Chibi Maruko and Atashin'chi, while I haven't really learnt about anime until 2012, when I watched Nichijou. At around the same time, I was introduced to Touhou Project and watched a lot of fan creations. One day I stumbled upon a fan work dedicated to Marisa x Alice, and that's how I dived into the world of yuri.
Languages I speak: Cantonese, English, Mandarin and German (still learning it)
Favorite genres: Adventure, Action, Shounen, Seinen and yuri/shoujo-ai
(But indeed I give every genre a shot, as long as the work is good and it is attractive to me. You may notice I gave some yuri works quite a low score, but the fact is that I gave some anime with yuri elements high scores, e.g. Kakegurui and Revolutionary Girl Utena. It's just that MAL doesn't regard them as yuri.)
Favorite bands: Queen, AC/DC, Kraftwerk, Foo Fighters, Ave Mujica and SOUL'D OUT (other bands that I listen to quite a lot: Franz Ferdinand, The Vaccines, Daft Punk and Earth, Wind and Fire)
Favorite musicians and singers: Freddie Mercury, Michael Jackson, Prince, Mariya Takeuchi, Lady Gaga, Jacky Cheung and Teresa Teng
Favorite character:
Rating system:
I rate the show mostly based on my enjoyment, but at the same time I'll also consider the plot, character, etc. I mean, these elements affect how enjoyable the show is, right?
If the show is rated 8 or above, it means that I enjoy the show and I definitely recommend others having a try. If it's 7, it means there're some flaws that may bore me or refine me from enjoying it, but it's still good enough. If it's 6, it means the show is slightly above the average. I may still recommend it, but it's not necessary to be watched and even if you miss it, it'll be fine. If it's 5 or below, it means I don't think the show is worth watching and skipping it is all fine. Only when you're really interested in it, then you could give a try.
For short works like OVA or music videos, I rate them based on what they're, i.e. a music video will be compared to other music videos instead of regular TV shows. That's why the ratings from me for these works are usually higher than average.
I never give 1 to any works. Also, I never give scores to anime that I haven't started watching at all. So good for you, Ex-Arm.

My thoughts on girls love (GL) and some recommendations:
GL actually doesn't have a specific definition. Some may consider close friendship between girls as GL, but some may consider only the romantic relationship. For me, I'll only consider a work to be GL when the girls get into a relationship of "above friendship, below romantic relationship".
Some of my recommendations are: (the main plot is GL) 1. Revolutionary Girl Utena 2. Aoi Hana 3. Candy Boy (incest warning) (the subtext and side characters are GL) 1. Kakegurui
And please, stop claiming "GL is made for male". How come there're so many statistics proving female audience as the main audience of GL works (like on Wikipedia), while some people are still so obsessed with this misconception? It's not a problem to be ignorant of something, but it's a problem if you still hold the misconception after knowing the fact.
Favorite ships:
Kirisame Marisa x Alice Margatroid (Touhou): The first ship in my life. Because of them, I started to watch yuri. I like that they have opposite personalities, while they can still help each other out.
Momobami Kirari x Igarashi Sayaka (Kakegurui): My OTP of all time. The Tower of Doors would be my favorite gamble in Kakegurui! "Sayaka, you're probably thinking about how this is impossible to understand, aren't you? Well, I agree with you. Someone like you, who worships logic even as you're bound by it, someone who's willing to shut her mind down at the brink of death, and still forces herself to choose cold logic at the end of it... It makes no sense at all to me. You're the exact opposite of me in every way... And I like that. I like that just fine." - Kirari Momobami
Higashikata Josuke x Hirose Yasuho (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 8: Jojolion): They are just cute together.
Tenjou Utena x Himemiya Anthy (Revolutionary Girl Utena): Utena is a brave girl who sets Anthy free from the patriarchy, and she doesn't own her just like other characters do, which is what true love is about. Also Anthy is one of the few dark skinned girls that catches my eye. She is so pretty :D
Besides anime, I also watch western cartoons.
List of blog posts I wish to write in the future (because I'm bored idk: How to get to Jojo's Bizarre Adventure/ How to get to Kakegurui/ Analysis on the Tower of Doors in Kakegurui
Hello, I’m really sorry for the late reply! It wasn’t intentional, I thought I had responded already, but as I was going through my messages, I realized yours was still left on read.
Wow, that cosplayer did an amazing job of looking like Mary! It’s spot on. The uniform also looks like she made it herself, which is really cool. I totally get what you mean about the bright, cartoonish hair, it can sometimes take away from the more serious tone of the manga. Honestly, I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much if the hair didn't look like the original. Every time Kirari was on screen in the live-action, I was so impressed with how her hair looked, it didn’t look cheap at all. They really did a great job!
Haha, that’s some serious dedication for Yurika Nakamura right there! I can relate, during Eren the Southpaw, even though it was a bit rough at times, I’d fast-forward to the parts with Yurika, and it was totally worth it. Despite the boring parts in the show, Yurika and Elaiza Ikeda really look so cute together. Also, the yuri web drama Yurika Nakamura is in got a second season with even more yuri! Chaser Game W is the series name, and she’s absolutely gorgeous in it. Plus, it just got a manga adaptation too.
It’s really impressive that you studied both German and Arabic during your bachelor’s! I totally understand what you mean about the vocabulary, Arabic can be tough to remember at first. And thats a really good comparison about Arabic and Chinese being similar in that sense. The official written language in Arabic is Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), which is used in formal settings like news, speeches, and education across Arab countries. But when people speak in their daily lives, the dialects can vary so much from country to country. It's like with Chinese dialects, what people speak in different regions can be worlds apart. When people from different Arabic-speaking countries meet and the dialects are too different, we usually switch to MSA or a more neutral version of our dialects to communicate. It's fascinating how languages evolve that way. I speak Jordanian Arabic at home, but I have friends from Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and their way of speaking is completely different. Over time, I've picked up some of their dialect, too. In Saudi, they use a lot of hand gestures while speaking, and I’ve learned that as well! Haha. As for Modern Standard Arabic, I tend to use it with people I’m not very familiar with because it’s more polite and respectful.
I completely understand your frustration with how websites demand your personal information just to access content. Asking for something as personal as an ID card number just to reset a password feels like an invasion of privacy. It’s such a shame because, as you said, there’s so much amazing art and writing out there, but the need to protect your privacy just makes it harder to enjoy. It’s such an unnecessary barrier, and I get why it’s so frustrating.
Haha, that’s definitely relatable! People seem to gravitate toward the spicy stuff, but at least you're getting attention and support for your work. It’s great that you know there’s an audience for both kinds of stories. The important thing is that you’re enjoying the process of writing and connecting with readers.
The Price of Salt (Carol) is such a powerful example of how a story can impact readers. It’s amazing how art like that can provide hope and help people see that they aren’t alone. Representation in art is crucial, it helps people feel seen and understood, especially when it reflects experiences that are often overlooked or misrepresented. You’re absolutely right that art doesn’t have to be 100% realistic, but it does have the power to change perceptions and offer hope. It's wonderful that writers, regardless of their gender or background, can contribute to positive representation, whether through yuri or any other genre. Stories that connect to real-life experiences will always have a special resonance.
I totally understand your hesitation about talking about Matama and Nemo openly. It’s tough when people jump to conclusions about a work without understanding its deeper context. It's unfortunate that some will misinterpret things just because a piece of art or a statement doesn't align with mainstream views. Your caution makes perfect sense, especially when you just want to enjoy and share something you love without dealing with unnecessary drama.
If you decide to create a new account, that might give you more freedom to express yourself and engage with people who truly understand and appreciate the series for what it is. Just make sure you feel comfortable with it, whether that means being more selective with what you post or focusing on a community that gets it. You deserve to enjoy your creative work without worrying about how others might misjudge it.
Also, on another note, I’m not sure if this is true or not, but I’ve been seeing on Twitter and Instagram that there’s a new Kakegurui live-action adaptation. However, it’s a Western version, and none of the cast members are Japanese. They’re completely different from the original characters, not even the hairstyles or fashion match. Plus, in this version, Runa is portrayed by a man. haha :D
Thanks for the notice!!
I have seen the announcment, and it remind me that I should write you, but you were faster :D
I am really happy and excited, hope the adaptation turns out as amazing as the original.
We are so back!!
Okay, that settles it! If either of us replies late, it’s totally okay, so there’s no need to worry about it. ദ്ദി ˉ͈̀꒳ˉ͈́ )✧
Same here! I’m really hoping we get to see more development between Sayaka and Kirari. Since Kakegurui focuses so much on the story and gambling gimmicks, there isn’t much room for their romance in the manga. But I still consider them canon, so I’m really hoping we get more of them soon. :)
As for the Kakegurui live-action, I also had complaints about everyone’s hair. If I remember correctly, Kirari was the only one who had the right hair color not even Mary! But yeah, I totally agree, Sayaka’s actress did an amazing job portraying her. I’ve watched other shows with Yurika Nakamura, and she’s really good at embodying her characters, it makes it feel like she was meant for the role. And the fact that both she and Kirari’s actress are in Yuri Project makes them even more perfect for it. Did you know they were actually in another series together before Kakegurui? It’s called Eren the Southpaw. Honestly, it’s pretty boring, so I’m not sure if you’d enjoy it, but they have a lot of cute interactions, like sitting on each other’s laps. ;)
Oh, cool! Your first language is Chinese? my first language was arabic. :) Manhua are basically the Chinese versions of manhwa and manga, and you can find most of the untranslated ones on Bilibili. That Kirasaya fic you mentioned sounds intense but also really sweet, it sounds like a very toxic but not really at the same time which is exactly the kind of thing I love reading the most.
I totally get what you mean about ID registration. It’s so frustrating when all you want is to enjoy a good story without the extra hassle. Plus, I rarely revisit those sites, so registering feels like a waste. I’d seriously love to read your fanfics sometime if you ever feel like sharing! Even if you’re on hiatus a lot, that’s totally okay, sometimes inspiration just comes and goes. I’m like that with art. (^v^)
Yeah, I completely agree. annoying when people make assumptions without considering actual data or perspectives from within the community. It’s even worse when these misconceptions keep spreading, despite studies and firsthand experiences proving otherwise.
The idea that yuri is only for men or exists just to cater to them completely ignores the diverse audience that enjoys it. Like you said, there are plenty of female yuri fans and creators, but some people just refuse to acknowledge that. For example, the other day, I was on a manga website discussing a chapter, and I mentioned how the author’s works feel very realistic. Someone responded that it’s because the author is a woman, and another person added that the author is in a relationship with a woman. I think a lot of yuri works feel authentic because some authors are writing from personal experience, and a big part of that is the fact that many of them are women. The comparison to yaoi is interesting too, there’s definitely a difference in how fan engagement is perceived in both genres.
That example with Matama and Nemo really highlights the issue. People experience media differently, some appreciate the intimacy and emotions, while others focus purely on the physical aspects. But reducing yuri as a whole to just "fanservice for men" is oversimplifying it so much. It’s definitely frustrating, but I’m glad there are people like you who push back against these misconceptions! („• ֊ •„)੭
Your wishes may come true sooner than you think.
In less than a month, there will be jojo day (12.4.) and almost certainly there will be announced new anime adaptation.
I am really excited and hope they announce the Steel Ball Run.
Cant wait to see animated Gyro!!
Thank you for accepting! How was hunter x hunter now that you finished it? I saw so long ago like 2015, and is my favorite shonen, Is cool that you like jojo, that is definately one the funniest series i ever seen! Big fan of joseph joestar!
Hey there! Sorry for the late reply. I'm really happy we can connect here too I totally agree with you on the ending, as long as Kirasaya gets a good resolution, I’m satisfied too. And you make a great point about the live-action adaptation! It’s refreshing when they add unique scenes while staying true to the original story. Some live actions can be hit or miss, but this one really surprised me in a good way.
Also, I really like Sayaka Igarashi’s live-action actress! She’s actually one of my favorite Japanese actresses, even though she doesn’t get many roles with significant screen time. Yurika Nakamura is so pretty and a great actress, and the fact that she starred in a yuri web series too probably makes me a little biased, haha. (ᵕ—ᴗ—)
I totally get your perspective on yuri tropes. It’s nice to see more diverse and positive representations, especially as the genre evolves. It’s interesting how our preferences change the more we explore different works I used to enjoy simpler portrayals, but now I really appreciate more nuanced and emotional ones too. That said, I still think Kuroko is a hardcore lesbian, haha, and with the 4th season announced, I can’t wait to see how her character develops! Also, no problem about the differences between the anime and manga, it’s always fun to notice those details. :)
Your take on the intimacy between Matama and Nemo is really interesting. To me, Nemo’s sex scene felt both steamy and intimate, which made it so cute. It’s rare to see that kind of emotional balance in a scene that isn’t just there to be over-sexualized even though its a sex scene. I still can’t believe Magical Girls managed to air on TV with a scene like that! I feel the same way about the lack of deep and meaningful representation for lesbian and bi women in anime there’s often too much focus on the physical side, and not enough on emotional depth. Expressing our views and supporting artists who portray these relationships authentically is definitely the way to go.
By the way, you speak Chinese? That’s really cool! It must be so much fun (and easier) for you to enjoy manhua, and yuri stories in their raw versions. And you’re definitely not crazy for fangirling I’d do the same for a character I love. I actually saw the same thing for KKG, but in Japanese, and I’m really tempted to buy it and translate it myself even though I don’t know Japanese, haha. Also, analyzing the gambles in KKG is so fun. The story, characters, plot, gambles, and even the setting are so in-depth it’s really impressive. Despite the, uh, orgasmic Yumeko moments, I’d still recommend it to anyone interested in gambling stories.
On another note, I really like how you described the yuri/GL genre on your profile. At the end of the day, yuri, girls' love (GL), and shoujo ai all mean the same thing romance between two female characters (or most). But I do think each term has developed its own connotations. For example, when I think of yuri, I imagine something wholesome, with depth in both the story and the romance. But when I think of GL, I immediately associate it with webcomics and manhwa, probably because a lot of manhwa focus more on the sex while romance takes a backseat. Some stories don’t shy away from those moments like What Does the Fox Say, Ruthless, and Sadistic Beauty Side B.
Also, I heavily agree with you when you said yuri isn’t made for only men. It’s honestly so stupid to assume a lesbian genre is meant for only male audience. I get why people think that, since men tend to like girl-on-girl action, and a lot of girls who read yaoi like to ship two hot guys together. I also think this assumption comes from the way yaoi is often consumed many girls read it because of the attractive male characters, but a lot of yaoi (especially with aggressive sex scenes) is based on unrealistic perspectives, and those perspectives sometimes influence how people see yuri too. If that makes sense?
Looking forward to talking more about this with you! :D
I also really like Ave Mujica this season. At first I didn't really follow the Bang Dream series. But once I watched MyGo especially when I heard the opening song, I immediately fell in love with this anime. It reminded me of when I watched Girls Band Cry even though I felt Girls Band Cry was still better in terms of music and the story was arguably not as heavy as MyGo. When I finished with MyGo and entered Ave Mujica, I fell in love with the opening song again. And when I found out that Ave Mujica could be considered a sequel to MyGo, I felt a strong connection to the story and even the drama that was happening in each episode. I think the process of making the band MyGo from Crychic will also happen in Ave Mujica, but I hope to find new surprises in the formation of Ave Mujica. And I hope but I can only hope that there can be a match between bands: MyGo vs Ave Mujica.
Sorry I took so long to reply to your comment. Thank you for accepting my friend request. I have watched BanG Dream! Ave Mujica and I think this anime is one of the good anime this season. I think the best side of this anime is from the music and visuals even though it is 3D but still interesting. In addition, the story presented is very interesting to look forward to every week. I recommend this anime for you to watch this season.
When I read the paragraph you wrote, I got really excited to see how passionate you are about both series! I hope we can continue discussing our favorite shows like this. ^v^
It’s unfortunate that KKG won’t be getting a third season, but for some reason, I’m okay with that. Personally, when I really enjoy an anime, I tend to read the manga afterward. Comparing the two, I feel like the manga emphasizes certain scenes much more than the anime. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the anime, but I love the manga even more. That said, the gambling matches can be a bit confusing to follow in the manga, and this is where the anime does a great job of explaining the rules clearly.
Yeah, seriously, Kiwi is the best! Even her name is cute and unique. As you described, she’s also really mature, and I love characters like her, free-spirited and laid-back, but when things get serious, they step up and show their maturity. You’re absolutely right about the author’s character writing. They do an excellent job designing personalities and tropes in a way that doesn’t feel overly sexualized. I really appreciate how Kiwi isn’t portrayed as the stereotypical “perverted lesbian” trope. Instead, she’s a lesbian character who genuinely cares for Utena but respects boundaries, making her feel much more human and authentic.
Regarding the comedic aspect, I completely agree. I always get my hopes up when an anime includes a lesbian character, only to see them reduced to a joke or an over-the-top caricature. Like you said, some shows turn them into exaggerated perverts, or their sexuality is used solely for comedic effect rather than being taken seriously. A good example is Kuroko Shirai from Railgun in the anime, she’s portrayed as a perverted girl chasing after her roommate, but in the manga, there are moments where she expresses genuine thoughts about love, like when she says, “There’s no such thing as gender when it comes to love.” It’s clear the author wanted to show her as a real character, but their not enough opportunities for that.
About Nemo. I honestly didn’t think about it that way before haha :D . When I first saw the sex scene in the anime, I was worried it would just be there to appeal to male viewers, which would have made the relationship feel shallow. But I think they handled it well, it genuinely showed their feelings developing for each other rather than just being used for fanservice.
Gushing over magical girl series is always fun! it's an erotic work, but it has that “for the girlies” vibe (if that makes sense, haha). It includes sexual elements, but they’re done in a comedic way rather than just for shock value. What makes this series stand out is how well it develops its characters, making them feel deep and decisive rather than just focusing on the fanservice.
Oh, I didn’t know people compared it to Kaiji! Maybe that’s because I’m not familiar with the anime (ᵕ—ᴗ—), but that’s really interesting. The Tower Door arc was also my favorite scene in the anime too, and for the manga, I loved the gambling match that Mary and Ririka teamed up in , when Mary tells Ririka that they’re friends. That scene felt so impactful, and it really strengthened their bond moving forward. ( I kinda ship though... they are just so cute together)
Have you been keeping up with the KKG manga? I took a break because I got busy while reading, then forgot about it and lost track of my chapter. I just checked it again, and the story has developed like crazy, new characters and everything! I might just end up rereading all 18 volumes.
( I tried to attach the photo of Mary and Ririka gamble but it does work :|)
Hello, sorry for the late reply! No problem, and thank you for the friend invite! (sorry for the late reply!
I get what you mean, Kakegurui and Gushing Over Magical Girls are pretty divisive anime. People either loved them or thought they were weird. As someone who isn’t a fan of unnecessary fanservice, I just found both series really fun and hilarious.
I actually started reading the Kakegurui manga back in 2020. Even though the Japanese version is complete (I think, feel free to fact-check me), I just read the English chapters as they release weekly or monthly.
As for Gushing Over Magical Girls, I LOVE IT. Don’t apologize! Feel free to ask or talk about the show as much as you want. I really like both the anime and the manga; it’s some great stuff. My favorite part in the anime was in that episode where the villains went out shopping for Morino. Funny enough, it’s even her birthday today, February 8!
For my favorite character, I fell in love with Kiwi at first sight. Her character is seriously so extraordinary and hot.
What about you? Who’s your favorite character? What moment did you like the most? And what made you love Kakegurui and Gushing Over Magical Girls so much? :)

Yume to Koi dewa Tsuriawanai is great because the story is the first yuri manga with a story like that(you can read the synopsis/intro)
I even started considering to rewatch kakegurui. I am not that big fan, but I enjoyed some parts, also the opening is absolut banger!
The taste is also amazing, cant agree more on:
( I tried to attach the photo of Mary and Ririka gamble but it does work :|)
I get what you mean, Kakegurui and Gushing Over Magical Girls are pretty divisive anime.
Nice to meet a fellow Kakegurui fan ^v^
