THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Pretty much an episode following Rika and Satoko on their own little adventure. It's refreshing to see them outside of the usual village environment.

Satoko also seems more mature this episode compared to other episodes. No matter where they are though, the curse cannot be escaped. However, I'm happy to see Satoko in a happier light this episode.

This episode had me on the edge of my seat dreading the moment when the other shoe would drop. This episode delivered more slow burn setup/psychological horror. The insert song was nice.
I knew that the Syndrome disappearing wouldn't be the same as "curing" it. It seemed way too convenient of a development.
Satoko seems to be developing HS again.
This episode was really good. 4/5

I'm a little upset about the lack of ED visuals, but w/e.

Note on Satoko: Unlike Minagoroshi, Matsuribayashi Satoko never learned that she should reach out for help if she needed it. So it seems like once again, Higurashi is coming back to it's original message about communication.

so higurashi casually skips like 3 years and becomes a school anime? ok LOL

Satoko looks horrifying here. She pushed Rika away and now is acting like the victim? Come on Satoko...

Rika is now enjoying her school life, but Satoko became an outcast in St Lucia. Looks like we've got some Hinamizawa Syndrome vibes at the end. Next episodes would be interesting and so far I'm enjoying this backstory as a development.

Satoko a little baddie lowkey 🤤 https://imgur.com/a/uDUWnY8

So first half of this episode was really slice of lifey and you knew something dark was around the corner. Life isn’t as good as it seems at this new school. Satoko struggling and Rika thriving. I’m sure it’s intentional, but what is Rika playing at here? Maybe trying to draw Satoko out like when she pulled the gun? Can’t wait to find out.

I actually like this concept of a loop the most. Being in a different area, different school, new characters etc. Great episode.

Finally, something interesting is happening. I'm still not sure, if this is the same timeline from the original Higurashi, in which Rika turns into Bernkastel. Dumb Satako understand that you need to study in order to succeed in life, but at the same time Rika seems a little hypocritical. She wanted to go to this school together with Satoko, but after getting in she doesn't really help her. Rika is much more mature due to her experience with the time loop, so she should understand that Satoko needs help. I know that Rike is pressured by her peers, but still. They were best friends.

Umineko explores it very well in the visual novel. Its literally a hellhole

The first half of the episode is quite a comfy school life then it's got darker and darker.
Both Rika and Satoko enroll in the St. Lucia academy. Rika adapts herself very well to the new society but not Satoko. Satoko is an outcast inside the academy and finds the dark side of the academy. That academy is not prestigious like it looks from the outside.
Rika surely noticed something about Satoko, she might be planning about something already.
It looks like that the syndrome is back with Satoko, can't wait to see the next episode.

Fuck off Satoko, it’s her fault.
She either didn’t study enough and it’s just not for her. Also, they wouldn’t have grown so apart if Satoko had accepted the invite for the tea party at the beginning. And now she’s all like “why are you doing this to me Rika” ugh shut up. She was the one distancing herself to begin with

While I wouldn't say that Satoko is blameless, I can kinda see her PoV. She didn't want to go to that school. It's Rika who dragged her there with the promise of staying together.

So now that Satoko is having the hardest time trying to keep her promise to Rika, Rika is off in her own world, which is, again, I fully understand, considering Rika's past, but she bears some of the responsibility for how Satoko is feeling.

None of those new friends did for Rika what Satoko did. She owes it to her to tell those friends to fuck off and stand beside your friend, even if she tells you not to.

Come on, Rika, you know better than to take Satoko's ability to hold up a facade lightly and stubbornness at face value.

It is shitty but look at it from Rika's PoV. Lashing at her classmates means letting go of the life she desperately wished for literally a hundred years. Rika also didn't really know how deep the shit Satoko was in. Not saying anything looks like the least harmful thing to do under those circumstances.

It's a school for young ladies and Rika admires it, it's quite common that young girls admires school likes this and want said "Good tidings to you" instead of "Hello", Rika want to learn where Satoko cannot adapt to the new school and to the rules and lessons bore her.

Oh, I feel sorry for Satoko...
I don't really want think like this, but... it was Rika idea, she wanted to go to this school, she drag Satoko into this and now like... Satoko rejected the offer twice, so haven't they talk, tried to invite her again, meet after school, spend some time together before Satoko started get problems and needs extra lessons?
You tell me that Rika is so busy with new friends that she don't have time for Satoko or like reject some offers and go spend time with Satoko?
How long this take? One term?
It hurts...
but I can't wait to see next episode.

The fact she passed the entrance exams and now she's failing shows she's being lazy in and out of class. No matter how much of a snore-fest it is, the only people who legit fall asleep in class are those that do not get enough sleep at night.

The worst part of this is I'm absolutely certain Satoko will be either forgiven or her memories will be erased to the point where she bears no blame in the last episodes and so they can all be bffs again.

Agree
Rika tell Satoko that was her dream to go to this school with her,
she is already 'grown up" compared to Satoko, when I think they just started middle school when Rika started talk about high school.
So Satoko was still kid and don't really thought ill it be like when she gets in and she just wanted to be with Rika.
I know Rika doesn't really forced her, but still looks like even asking for going with her to this school was enought for Satoko to agree.

I'm kinda suprised they skipped ex. Chie or someone else talked with Satoko about her school choice, because teacher knows her capabilities in learning.

To all the people still confused: this's a "backstory" explaining what happened between Rika and Satoko before Gou's loops.

So Rika just wanted to have tea parties after all...

Well, that's what happens when you follow someone else's dream, so Satoko can't be blamed for not adapting there, but that isn't even nearly enough to justify what she did in Gou. If this is the only reason for her reaching the point from the last arc, this is bullshit. It's obvious that something else will still happen, it's still '87 after all. It's not like she can go straight looping, someone will have to give her powers to do so. I'm still wondering if it'll be Hanyuu or her rival, I still think it'll be Hanyuu though.

This is already beyond the breaking point. The second year has already shown that, for Satoko going from healthy to terminal, it wouldn't even be minutes, it'd take 60 seconds!

PS: Ryukishi07 is pretty insistent on his mahou shoujo references.

Satoko with bazooka breasts is just cursed.

The more this drags on the more of an irredeemable character Satoko becomes.

The ep tried really hard to make it seem like St Lucia is a hellhole, with the ost, framing and Satoko's face when, at least in her case, it is ALL her fault.

Neglecting her studies, not even paying attention to class, rejecting Rika's offers, having an attitude towards teachers.

Why should I feel sorry for her? The show tries to make this seem like a struggle but then I remember what Takano and Sayo went through and this is just laughable. Even Ange's case was worse.

What is this?

"They told me to study"

If she gets bullied, it will be because she pulls stuff like in this episode, being a bitch(by St Lucia standards) to people around her. Although I doubt that any bullying will last or end well for the bullies since she is developing HS.

And people may forget but Satoko can get pretty nasty if you remove her abuse, and she hates the disguise of "proper girls" . So I am more leaning at the chance that Satoko will be the one to start some shit not her classmates.

Satoko is being a hypocrite.

Rika literally is offering to help her, and she turned her down. But then she's acting like Rika's ditching her. Satoko is the one who isn't making the effort to study or fit in at this school.

Like the teacher said, if Satoko doesn't like it, she can leave.

(Also so strange to me how Satoko uses keigo in her usual speaking style, but bristles at "gokigenyou")

Rika doesn't even look like she's even paying that much attention to them, her expression is still focused on Satoko rejecting her. People are way too focused on Rika being mildly insensitive (but still making an effort to reach out).

Also yeah everyone in Gou is OOC because the characters exist to serve the plot, not the other way around. Keiichi and Rena are some of the most important characters in Higurashi and they were written out offscreen this episode. We didn't even get to see them graduate or anything.

Satoko was always my least favorite of the OG crew, but I grew to sympathize with her during Minagoroshi-hen and also kind of starting to like her.

But Gou is REALLY trying to revert all that lol. Come on Satoko, your bff has literally endured years upon years of endless torture (which she is definitely aware of! I remember the crew being aware of previous loops in Kai) and first you're being a big meanie about the fact that she wants to leave Hinamizawa.

Okay, you eventually agree with her and get into the school, but as soon as you're there, you disapprove of everything regarding said school you've working almost THREE YEARS for getting into? And you start blaming Rika for your faults??

I get she's young and w/e (and St Lucia definitely isn't as amazing as Rika is making it out to be, see Ange), but come on, I really don't agree with her reasoning for going full yandere and reinstating the endless torture loop for her bff lol.

Honestly, not a bad episode per se, but I feel like the show is trying really hard to make me dislike Satoko again.

And still waiting on that Umineko connection...

That's my issue.

Like I think a lot of people can sympathize with Satoko's situation (Even if her behaviors are not the best, we love those characters because we are flawed people), but at the end of the day this whole arc just exists to explain to us how she became a mass murder who kills and tortures people through the space time. If this was just a story about two friends having a falling out I'd accept it, but I see nothing that could justify that level of evil.

To be honest I kinda hoped Rika had more self-respect than to end up in a school like this. Don't get me wrong, I definitely am a fan of elite schools, IF we're talking about elite from an academic standpoint - world-class academies meant to prepare their pupils for the most difficult and important careers, and to create brilliant minds that can change the world for the better.

But THIS... this is just a receptacle of deceit meant simply to create well-adjusted ladies to serve as luxurious companions to shallow, insecure and wealthy man with more money than balls.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Satoko has nothing to blame herself for (like literally doozing off at school and not asking for help etc.), but I do think Rika is more to blame here. Especially since she forcefully dragged Satoko into this to begin with.

Samu-tan said:

I mean, I speak quite "deftly" IRL too and yet I've never been a fan of this level of empty sophistication. I get especially ticked when people talk about "debate skills" like that. As a philosopher (PhD and all that), I always stood, and still stand, by the opinion that what matters is how good and worthy your ideas are, not how skilled you are at making something out of nothing.

Again. Rika and Satoko are not OOC. Satoko is bottling up everything that's going on and isn't communicating to Rika that she is having issues(WHICH IS STILL A MASSIVE CHARACTER FLAW LEFT UNRESOLVED BY MATSURIBAYASHI), Rika is doing the same shit she always does, which is do the bare fucking minimum in order to pat herself on the head and say "I tried". Rika does this, time and time again in Higurashi, and it's only because of K1 that she even manages to escape, because she only ever puts in the bare minimum effort.
Higurashi was never about K1 or Rena, it was always, and will always be a story about Rika. The fact that you think it isn't means you were speedreading/watching your way through Higurashi.
It was about Rika struggling to escape hell, by having her friends communicate with each other.
Higurashi is a story about communication, and Gou certainly hasn't changed that part of Higurashi.

Satoko isn't lazy, she spent a lot of time studying to pass exam.
We see 2nd years who also got problems, but they have to graduate this school,
because they come from "rich families" and even if they got private lessons for which their parents pay and they still got problems even if they pay attection on lessons.

Satoko had the Hinamizawa Syndrome and possibly has relapses, loneliness, stress...
people killed with Syndrome for small, stupid things...

We didn't even get to see them graduate or anything.
rika heard the girl telling them to go to the parlor 5 seconds later with no issue. if she heard her, she had to have heard the other girl. its obvious whats going to happen next week considering how st. lucia was portrayed in umineko. this will probably happen again after satoko gets bullied

and the pacing was already shit this week. wasting time to focus on characters that aren't immediately relevant to the matter at hand would just make it worse

Man Satoko was acting like such a bitch in this episode. She agrees to go with Rika to this high class academy knowing what it was. Refuses Rika's invitation to join her new friend circle so she doesn't get in the way (which is fine but don't complain about it later as if Rika didn't invite you), then AGAIN refuses Rika's offer to help her study when Satoko's grades dropped and this is somehow Rika's fault for enjoying her new life that she worked extremely hard for? Go fuck yourself.

Also Satoko's acting like such a spoiler brat when talking to that teacher. "You mean I still have to study hard? But I thought after I got into highschool I wouldn't have to study anymore. WTF?" Just lol? Obviously this is a very serious private school meant to prepare you for elite universities so yea, of course the studying has just began. I mean seriously.
At this point Satoko basically has 2 options if she wants to be a good friend and a decent human being.
1: Take her studies seriously, see if she can get her grades up in time, maybe ask Rika for help which might also help their friendship.
2: Decide this school isn't for her, explain to Rika that she didn't know what she was getting into enrolling there, wish her the best and transfer to an easier school.
If 1 fails, then you do 2 anyway. Pretty simple.

But no she's gonna blame Rika, murder her and drag her back to Hinamizawa to keep getting brutally killed over and over and over again using some magic powers that she's gonna pull out of her ass somehow. Satoko was already the worst out of the main cast and this season just ruined her beyond repair.
Honestly they could have just done a 12 episode sequel instead showing us what everybody's doing after escaping the time loop since those were the only decent parts of this season.

Rika is doing the same shit she always does, which is do the bare fucking minimum in order to pat herself on the head and say "I tried".

I love Rika, but I agree with this!

Satoko has a massive character flaw, which basically means she'll ends up bottling up her emotions. And due to this, she'll probably redevelop HS, since Irie never cured the Syndrome itself. Neither option 1 or 2 would be one that Satoko would do, given the state her character was in at the conclusion of Matsuribayashi-hen.
But Rika is just as much at fault here, because she KNOWS that Satoko has this problem, but like usual, only tries the bare minimum to help Satoko, which doesn't do anything in this situation.
