The title says it all. I think it depends with me. For example I call most of the MHA cast by there last name but I call the cast of Assassination Classroom all by there first names.

Depends on which one is used the most for that character, though I try to use first names as often as possible to avoid confusion.

Whichever sounds best or is easier to say or is most commonly used in the anime itself.

I hate the meta type of posts that contain critical remarks on the fruitlessness of a discussion to generate a discussion. Partly because it is no more meaningful, well in fact, can actually be worse in a lot of cases. So this will be the last time I post something like this. Is this really a worthy question? I mean I know we're all out of ideas for topics and every topic ever, as soon as they're created, will be bashed for its unoriginal nature. But seriously, calling a character by first or last name? Or am I missing out on something here?

It depends on what they're mostly called by in the show. I'll use Railgun as an example...Since the characters call each other mostly by their last names then I refer to them by their last names. For example, I always call the MC of Railgun "Misaka", not "Mikoto".

Depends on the way other characters call them. If the name the most often used is the first, then I'll call them like that, if it's the last, I'll call them by last name.
It can also sometimes depend on the name I first heard being used for this character in a discussion.

Literally everyone uses the ones that are most commonly used by other characters to call them or in the fanbase themselves , is this thread needed ?

Whichever refers specifically to that character, like some may have the same last name or first name so I use whichever. If both matches like Haruno Sakura from Naruto or Wandaba Style, I mention the anime too

Sometimes I even use them interchangeably. It's not a rigid thing at all. It's similar to whether I choose japanese title or english title when mentioning an anime. They refer to the same thing after all.

It kind of depends with me also. It depends on what name fits them best, whether it be a nickname, their last name, or their first name.

Most of the time I call them by their last name since it's the same in my high school and I'm used to it. And using their last name makes it feel like I'm giving them the respect they deserve.

If everyone calls them by their first name then I will do so as well.

Seriously though, what a fruitless topic. Are we out of topics that can generate an actual discussion? Really, this all boils down to a "Huh, okay." response.

If I look into my list of favourite characters, I call them :

So yeah, I mostly call them by their first name, with a few exceptions

Also, western characters by their first names and Japanese by their last, generally.

Mostly by first name. But in case of the characters of Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Major, I just don't feel comfortable calling them by their first name for some reason.

Usually whatever they’re called in the show. I’ll call Subaru, Subaru because he’s called that the most in the show. For someone like midoriya, I’ll switch it up between midoriya and deku because he’s called that a lot in the show.

Usually by the first name.

Last name for MHA characters, also Uzaki. Always good to remind about Yoshikage Kira. Kira is his last name.

Depends on what name is used the most.
If they often referred by other characters with their last name, I am going to remember that character with their last name, same rule with their first name or their nickname.

nicknames mostly. I see so many characters fall into the same archetype with the same face and hair, similar or same voice actors it's impossible to refer to them with their real names. there's a reason reiclone as a term exists.

As characters are told by both of them.
Whether they're side or closed one.

Then why don't you make a better thread.
May be it can break a new revolution here.

Now don't tell me you don't have time or you're already out of ideas or it's a pain in ass.

I like when shows give their characters only one name. It keeps everything simple. No need for both a first and a last name, when one is enough to know who is who.

Now don't tell me you don't have time or you're already out of ideas or it's a pain in ass.

I mean I really don't need you to tell me what to do. I said we're all out of ideas and my question is pretty clear. 'Despite the fact that everyone's out of ideas, is this question really needed?'

Also, what if I ask the question? Did I really say OP is shit for posting it? I'm pretty sure I was merely saying how utterly baffled I was that this question even needed to exist in the first place. Not that I say 'hey come up with something better' because I don't have any ideas.

So, if I say 'this is useless, why does this need to exist', it isn't equivalent to 'hey create something great for me next time', but only that this is useless. Even the frequently created 'why are elitists so annoying' thread is at least a whole lot more meaningful. Not a big deal of course, and not that difficult to understand either.

I normally call a character by what most people in the show refer to them by.

ex. I always called Chisa Yukizome from danganronpa 3 "Yukizome" because the 77th class always called her "Yukizome-sensei". But I've heard loads of people call her "Chisa" and I get confused as to who they're talking about till they say "Yukizome"
