A suspected arson attack at the No. 1 Studio building of animation production company Kyoto Animation on Thursday has left at least 33 people dead and 36 more injured. It is Japan's deadliest arson incident since 1989 and its deadliest fire incident since 2001, according to police. A 41-year-old man, who is among the injured, has been identified as a suspect.

According to a Thursday evening incident report by the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, two 20-liter containers of gasoline were found outside on the street near the site of the fire. Police say the suspect admitted to lighting gasoline as he was transported away from the scene. He is pending questioning while being treated at the hospital. Japanese news media report witnesses hearing the man say "Go die!" while setting the building lobby on fire.

Reports say about 70 people were inside the three-story building when the fire began at approximately 10:35 a.m. local time. Local fire agencies dispatched 30 vehicles to the scene, and the blaze was finally put out nearly five hours later. On Thursday evening, fire officials said two of the dead were found on the first floor, 11 on the second floor, and 20 in the staircase leading from the third floor to the rooftop. Firefighters found the rooftop door closed, but it was not locked. Fire and rescue activities have since ended, and no one is left inside the building.

Authorities have not released the names of victims. Among the dead, 12 were men, 20 were women, and one was of unconfirmed gender. As news of the fire spread around the world on Thursday, anime music producer Suguru Yamaguchi (Tamako Market and Tamako Love Story) revealed on Twitter that he has confirmed the safety of director Naoko Yamada.

A former Kyoto Animation employee spoke with public broadcaster NHK and said the No. 1 Studio largely employed animators involved in creating key animation and in-between animation frames. Most of the staff were women, with 10 to 20 people working on each floor. The studio building, which was badly damaged in the fire, was last inspected in October and found to be in compliance with code.

Kyoto Animation employs approximately 160 people. Its No. 1 Studio is located in Fushimi Ward in Kyoto and began operating in 2008. The company also operates a separate head office, a No. 2 Studio building, a merchandise store, and a No. 5 Studio building in the city of Uji. No incidents have been reported in any of the company's other sites.

There's fundraise for Kyoto Animation:
https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-kyoani-heal

This will no doubt cause their anime projects to be delayed in the future. I pray for the people affected by this.

Can Kyoto Animation even accept any donations, seeing as they're a for profit organization? Probably a very bad idea to give money to any unofficial donation drives like this. If you want to support them right now, buy some blurays or something.

I've seen some GoFundMe's already up by some (major) companies. Do remember that Kyoto Animation (nor anyone from there) has asked for money or donation, they likely had insurance, and Japanese National Healthcare is MANDATORY for everyone.

I'm confused. Is there a Japanese law that stops for-profit companies from getting donations? Here in America anyone can donate money to anyone

I am shocked beyond belief and overwhelmed with sadness. My absolute favourite studio. Praying for the deceased and everyone involved. Hoping the injured get through this. :'(

What a terrible news on the very day I got my hands on the Novel that inspired one of the best animated franchises ever from them. I have been so looking forward to it but now I don't even feel like reading it. Absolutely heartbroken. :'(

Edit: Jul 19, 2019

I cried almost the entire day yesterday. The Hibike Final Novel which I have been looking forward to read is still on my desk and I haven't turned a single page.

KyoAni saved me with their anime for years and made me a better person IRL. It was my solace when I was earning so little that I would split my meals to halves so that I would be able to eat at least twice a day. KyoAni helped me recover from depression with their positivity. With their vivid colour, their stellar animation and stories that are very close to human emotions - profound emotions. And I think many share the same sentiment.

Even if you don't share this sentiment, you are still part of the anime community so spare some thoughts to the victims and at least don't bring up what you didn't like about the studio or their works. This is not the time for something like those.

The best course of action at this time would be to show your support whether you are a fan of KyoAni, a part of the diverse anime community or just a casual anime fan either financially or emotionally.

Financially you can support by clicking the image below (this is an official donation set up by Sentai):

Link: Help KyoAni Heal

Or you may visit KyoAni's official shop and order an item by clicking the image below:

Link: KyoAniShop

Those who are not in a position to help the victims and the studio financially, please do so by showing your emotional support. Use whatever hashtags you find appropriate to get people's attention through social media.

The most used hashtags right now are:
#PrayForKyoAni
#PrayForKyotoAnimation
#KyoAni
#HelpKyoAniHeal

But there are other ways to support no matter how small it may seem. For an example, by watching the video below and give it a 'like' in youtube.

You can also CONTRIBUTE IMMENSELY by subscribing to their official youtube channel here:

Link: KyoaniChannel

You can go through the videos posted in their channel and increase the viewers count. By clicking 'like'. it will also be automatically recommended by youtube to other user's recommendations. The number of subscribers have increased substantially in the past 24 hours (just surpassed 250K) and it's still growing.

This is our time to show support as the international anime community. You can become a part of the chain that will help the studio in these trying hours.

Please share this idea or any other you may have. Thank you.

Edit: Walk Through Added if you want to show your support by purchasing KyoAni's digital products.

Thanks for going through it. I have already made purchases and it works (instantaneous).

I'm not certain, but I've seen the sentiment go around a lot from Japanese Twitter users, so I'd imagine there's something to it. At the very least, don't give money to any fundraiser that can't confirm that they've gotten the ok from KyoAni themselves to run it.

Kyoto Animation is my all-time favourite Studio so this is crippling news for someone like me. I really hope the perpetrator is dealt with appropriately here so that occurrences like these never happen again.

I’m sure their upcoming projects will all take a slight delay but I’ve no qualms regarding that whatsoever, I’m just praying that the workers and their families are safe and sound. I’ll make sure to chip in the fundraising and pray lots for these wonderful and hard-working people.

doubt it since KyoAni is one of the few studios that treat their employees very well like give them proper good salaries and less overtime/overwork schedules (thats why they only release few anime each year)

It is a request from one Japanese anime fan.

Please don't donate in the unofficial channel. In Japan, unofficial crowdfunding, which may be a fraud, is rampant.

If Kyoto Animation has created an official channel, please donate there. Or please support by buying Kyoto Animation Blu-ray.

I pray for the safety of the Kyoto Animation staff.

I won't lie; I was usually always disgusted with most anime that this studio made, how they tried to make bullying okay, and even cute, like for instance what they did with character Yohei Suzuhara in Clannad series.

Where they made him clown, scapegoat, and a punching bag, while Tomoya was okay in everyone's eyes.

Yeah, I am aware that Clannad was "only" animated by KyoAni, but ever since I noticed pattern in their work (another example, Haruhi Suzumiya who is, well a bitch, AND a bully, being adorable for that)...

I definitely don't wish anyone anything bad, especially not death, but I was always under impression that KyoAni is, despite visual quality, studio who just likes to makes.

To this day I remember how Clannad series made me feel sick because of how horribly that boy Yohei was treated, compared to his "friend" Tomoya.

My condolescences, anyway...

What the hell dude, this isn't the place to rant about their adaptation of a shitty porn game, tell that to KEY if anything. Hell they made the Silent Voice movie so go watch that and drop the tinfoil hat if you think they just make shit that enable bullying. Get some tact, this isn't the time or place to talk about that

I was planning on finishing my AIR rewatch that I started in 2014, but I'm already in too much pain. Too much to watch any anime, too much to watch a KyoAni anime, and definitely too much to watch an anime specifically designed to pull my heart out. The combination of all 3 would be unbearable. I really hope KyoAni can get through this awful tragedy.
