What's the importance you give to art in a manga?, do you consider it almost as important as story or to a much lesser degree of importsnce when compared to story?, i personally give art a fair consideration and importance but in most cases if i like the story i don't mean if the art isn't as great or is just decent. Example: kimetsu no Yaiba(the art is pretty good but can be off putting for some people).

I wouldn't really say it's any more or less important than anything else, honestly. Though it does play the biggest part in shaping my first impression of something. It's pretty rare for me to not read something because of the art though, I really like all kinds of different art styles. Anything from ONE to Nishioka Kyoudai is cool with me.

Unless the art is so bad that it distracts me from the story or impedes my understanding or it, I will never say that it makes a manga worse, but amazing art can make a manga better. I've only read maybe 3 manga with art that actually got in the way of my enjoyment. I liked the art in Holyland but a lot of people thought it was really off-putting too. Also I always forget to look at the backgrounds with dialogue heavy manga, so I don't even mind if the drawings are always really simple, like in Spirit Circle (the author wouldn't even bother showing you the character's surroundings half the time)

So basically it almost will never hurt my enjoyment but can possibly enhance it instead.

For me personally, I think art elevates the experience as well as immerses me to the story. As a visual medium, it definitely needs effective art in order to draw in readers-- after all, actions speak louder than words.
However, when I think of good art, I don't think of art that simply detailed or realistic. Rather, I look at if there's an effective flow of the story using panels that don't break immersion and just seem "natural". As well, if they got a consistent perspective down.

Paneling and perspective is all about placement of certain lines and shapes, hence why I consider them "art" because it is distracting visually if not done well.

This is especially vital for action scenes/important story scenes, since the shape and position of how they place their character may affect the message/movement the story is trying to convey. For instance, a shocking revelation might take up only a quarter/fifth of the page may leave you confused because the art of paneling was not utilized properly. "Was this an important scene?" you may ask. Because the dialogue sure shows that, but you can't feel the weight of it being conveyed because the artist didn't give you the "breathing" room to do so.
As well, if you change perspective within every panel on how a certain subject is placed relative to the background, it may leave readers confused as to how they should view this certain subject in the scene. They will be too busy trying to visualize this placement and how they interact within that space. Even a few moment's pause to think about such things may make the reader less immersed in the story because they can't visualize the scenario playing out in their head "smoothly".

So in short, art is very important. But I believe it goes beyond an artstyle and this can make or break a series for me.

Art matters a lot to me in manga, but that's because I'm relatively new to the manga scene. Once I start caring more about story, it shouldn't matter as much

Not very important. But there are specific art styles (eyes too big, etc.) that I dislike so I won't read them even if the art is good.

The art style and the quality of it matters a lot to me.
I would say it matters almost as much as the plot and storyline in general.
I usually don't read mangas in the 90s because I'm not a fan of their artstyle.
Tho,other people's opinions may differ from mine :P

As long as the Art is half decent i dont really mind, it just needs to have a certain minimum quality. If it looks even better then thats a nice Bonus. Overall Story/Plot and Character's / Writing are more important, but at the end of the Day the whole Package just has to fit.

I think it's pretty important. Aesthetics aside, I don't like manga with styles so sketchy that you can't tell what's going on or tell characters apart re: early chapters of Tokyo Ghoul, the FLCL manga. The most important thing is if the art style can convey what's happening in a scene in an easy to understand way. I definitely gravitate towards art styles that are clean and expressive.

Depends on what kind of manga it is. It usually doesn't bother me if it's bad unless I can't tell what's going on. On the other hand I'd probably be more inclined to drop an H-manga if I didn't care for the art style.

art or artstyle is extremely important to me when considering a manga. honestly, there
have been several times when a plot seemed quite interesting but i just couldn't get into
the manga as a whole solely because the art style wasn't to my liking. however, if the
manga comes highly recommended, i'll still try my best to complete it.

For me it's a point to consider when evaluating the manga.
It's hard for me to give a manga a 10/10 if the art is horrible, and in the same vein it's hard for me to give a manga a 1/10 if the art is gorgeous.
But it's not the most important part, manga like Freesia, Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro or Elfen Lied are all manga I enjoyed a lot despite thinking their art was quite bad. (And they're all 9s in my eye).
I also want to say that I rather have a manga that has "bad" art opposed to "bland" art, since at least the art on the first one has some individuality. I like feeling the artists "identity" in their art, if that makes sense.

Just like on Visual Novels, art on manga is very important in my case.

If I don't like the art, I won't bother reading it. Totally same case on how I pick Visual Novels.

Manga is a visual medium. The art is a tool of storytelling. It also sets the pacing/flow of the story. How can it not be important? It's not like in the case of a (light) novel, where everything is written down. Manga shows most of it contents through its artwork. Bad art and incompetent "direction" can break a manga.

And then there is the style and technique. Those are also important. If it can't even get the basics right (anatomy, consistency), the manga as a whole will suffer. I also like to see the personality of the artist/artwork. There are a lot of manga where the artwork is clean and technically good, but it's just relentlessly boring to look at.

for me, it definitely is an important factor when it comes to deciding whether to pick up a manga or give it a pass. the art can be used to quickly gauge how proficient a mangaka is at their work - proficient mangaka tend to have a pleasant-looking (subjectively speaking) character designs that are consistent throughout and "fits" the type of story of a given series.

there are exceptions, of course. i still enjoy anthology comics made by artists different from the original mangaka - although the art made not be as good as the original (mangaka from different series will inevitably bring their own artistic flavor which sometimes results in drastic changes to the character designs. some mangaka working in anthology comics are relatively new and that is reflected in their work). despite the character designs in anthology comics being almost always not up to par to the original, the story and the humor can make up for it.

Very important; sometimes I stop reading and just stare at the expressions and general surroundings of the characters. Of course, the story is much more important to me but it's hard to stay interested if the art is crappy.

I feel like it only needs to be decent enough to deliver the story. I like good art as much as anyone, but if it fits the tone of the story and looks comprehensible, it's fine in my book. I'd list ONE's works as an example but his art style has grown on me so much that I can't call it bad anymore, lol

it doesn't need to be too detailled. Too detailled is not so good for fluffy slice of life, but for more serious stories it works wonder.
Like, I can't imagine Koukou no Hito having a different artstyle, or K-on with Berserk's art. Berserk's art is stellar, but the story in itself is meh(golden age was really good, then I don't know where the fuck the story is headed).

So yeah, I think it's more important for the art to fit the atmosphere you're trying to create. I read manga for the story (apart from hentai), so as long as it's not really bad, chances are I won't mind it too much. Though it always feels good to read something that looks different in a good way from the somewhat generic/by the book designs(havent read much yet, but this issue seems less present than in anime)

It's not particularly important. So long as it's of a decent enough quality to tell the story it's trying to tell, I can't complain. I also won't complain if the artwork is of top-notch or superb quality, such as what you might find in Akira or the works of Inio Asano. Domestic Girlfriend and The Quintessential Quintuplets have great styles, as well.

I find more fault in manga with shoddy panel layout, such as in The Heartbreak Club, which has decent enough art, but the panel layout at times needs some TLC.

If art wasn't important I would read a book, there are some Manga that I enjoyed even if the art wasn't exceptional though. Matsumoto Taiyo's manga wouldn't be same without his art for example.

For an action manga the art is basically on par with the writing.

Art is quite minimal for me. It's all about the story but if it's colored it's possible to affect my rating from 0.25 - 0.50 but I like colored manga. This is why I read a large number of novels because the story is my fuel.

If the art is really not to my taste it sours my first impression, and I might have to struggle through for the first part. But there have been a few that the art has gotten better progressively with time as the mangaka has obviously evolved, and I like seeing that as I read. I think there has only been one or two that I have had to actively quit due to the art.

Really depends on what kind of thing it tries to sell.

Like Nihei's stuff really lives by the art and really wouldn't work with bad art but a lot of stuff works fine with bad art and it's also about parts of art. Like I'm reading Koi Kaze now and on a lot of level the art is pretty crappy and lacks detail but one thing it does well is portray the sombre mood with the facial expressions which is an essential part of what it's trying to sell and the low quality and level of the background detail doesn't really matter in that regard.

Art is a nice factor for the overall experience but for me, its the story and characters that matter way, way, way more.

It's easy finding great looking manga with a story/cast that I don't enjoy, but the true diamonds are the manga that has a special story and cast since that is much more rare for me, regardless of how the art is. If it adds to the great experience like with Kingdom, I appreciate it even more.

For me, the art is more or less as important as the story and characters. If t's not to my liking, i really struggle reading the series. Same with anime as well. But i wouldn't read it just for the art either.

Generally speaking i find most art styles in manga appealing enough so that at the very least, they don't bother me. It's somewhat rare for the art to be so unappealing to me, that i wouldn't give a series a shot or drop it.

I usually prioritize the story of a manga over its art. Not to say that the art is irrelevant as a form of criticism but still nothing can beat a great plot.

Anyone here who says it's not important are lying to themselves.

You are reading a comic. You need to visualize the motion of movement, and in order to do that the art must clear and comprehensible.

i think it's pretty important. my reasoning is, because it's a manga so i think the art is 50% the concern. but then again, 'bad' art is somehow subjective, there is a lot of comedy manga that have simple and 'bad' artwork, but it's still a good read. so i guess it depend on the genre and the story itself too.

Actually I donÄt think its all that important. As long as its not so bad that you don't understand what happens, or the art style actively doesn't vibe with you (which for example is my problem with the Haikyu manga), it doesn't really matter that much. Of course, Great art can elevate good pieces even higher.

It seriously depends. For example, if I'm reading a visually driven manga such as Blame! and the art isn't up to par, obviously its going to be important because its mostly portraying its narrative through the art. However, if something is very well written and has sub par to bad art, I still think its a little important, just not to the same extent. For example, Onani Master Kurosawa's art is (boldly) complete shit, but I still felt many emotions and thoroughly enjoyed it, and at the end of the day don't care much about the art quality.
