How making a short non-boring arc with great fights is very shounen-ey !!!!
It took 4 people to beat Kamui ,if it was another shounen, you would see a huge number of gaining new power before the main character say a cute speech about friendship and beat the enemy by himself.

Awesome season, quite enjoyed the fights and the backstory on Kagura's family was quite interesting. I wonder if the Shinsengumi will return for the final fight, it's just not the same without them :(

A very solemn and repetitive episode. As a season/arc finale, I sort of get what they want to do here, though, and it's fine yet a bit underwhelming. So in short, for the season...

The good
-Kagura's plot. Her mother, Umibozu vs Kamui, the redemption of Kamui... it was a surprising highlight considering how little I had considered Kamui as a character before. This entire story was excellent, and brought the emotions I often didn't find in other sections of this arc.
-Umibozu was... funny? He delivered the best lines at least. How did this happen.
-A bit of the emotional resonance of Gintoki's past and the incident with Shouyo managed to slip through. It was nice.

The bad
-Some of the worst attempts at comedy in this show, by far. I stand by my opinion. Fat Gintoki is not funny. The 837338388345th iteration of «it's Gintoki except fat» is not funny.
-Speech, speech, speech, speech and another speech.
-I'm also more into comedic Gintama but the main plot of this arc was specially meh for me, and it focused on characters and viewpoints that I ended up kind of detached from. SA and even FS handled emotions way better in my opinion.

The meh
-Oboro. Like seriously what has this character done to earn the praise of the fans? It's ridiculous that the series got so long to introduce him and it's absurd how irrelevant his presence has been in it. Goodbye man, you will be missed as much as you were needed.

A 7/10 for the worst Gintama season yet, and still one that is so mindblowing when it works well.

I'd say this mostly sums up my thoughts on this season for the most part, I think its hard to compare this to other seasons since its 1 arc versus other entires that had multiple but I do think it wasnt the best regardless. I think it suffered from tonal shift problems with the comedy actually interrupting some good moments which is why I think this episode and the flashbacks-kamui stuff was the highlights cause they actually picked a tone and basically stuck with it where the first half simply couldnt stop jumping back and forth. The comedy also did feel more hit or miss than usual though I do think sakamoto being sakamoto was consistently hilarious due to how little we see that guy.

I'm giving this "season" a 7, only gintama thing ive rated below a 8 but hey again i think its a bit unfair comparing them on seasonal basis, but i do also think this does have some legit flaws. It did suceed in getting my hyped for the final arc though.

That ending really got me hyped for Silver Soul arc. Kind of sad knowing that it will be the last arc though. I thought the last few episodes were kind of dull but the finale affirmed my love for this franchise. I miss the Shinsengumi and Earth characters. Glad that they will be appearing in the next arc.

I'm completely stunned by Utsuro's/Shoyo's story. The storytelling is so deep and consistent. I was kinda mind-blown by how every piece comes in place (with all the foreshadowing) and how the devastated personas of Utsuro were born. That was sad. EXTREMELY SAD I FEEL LIKE CRYING.

I never thought that after those tons of emotions, Utsuro's story would be the one to get me the most.

Great ending, we had a lot of explanations about what happened to Shouyou/Utsuro. These explanations made by Oboro before his death, explains that unfortunately, Gintoki really killed Shouyou T_T.
Speaking about Oboro, his death was sad, I really didn't expect to be sad for him.

It was an amazing season, not the best, but I loved to see again a lot of jokes between the battles. And just to see Zura, this season was worth it. The focus on Kagura's family was also a great thing.

This season is now over and as usual I am looking forward to the next/last one.

Can't believe I put off watching this because I just did not want to see another Gintama season come to an end!

Well, that went out with a bang!
Utsuro's past was pretty sad and I teared up...poor guy went through that much sadness and torture through hundreds of years of living that he invented split personalities for every consecutive reincarnation? Owch.
I'd say his hatred is kind of justified tbh :/

Also love the art style change as well- it was really beautiful.

So turns out the whole reason Utsuro joined the Tendoushu was because he wanted authority...which he didn't get. He got the title without any real influence because they were (rightfully) terrified of Utsuro's power/immortality.
But he ended up manipulating them anyway!

Oboro died too which was heartfelt even though I wasn't too keen on his character. Now it's solely up to Shoyo's disciples to put an end to Utsuro.

So excited to see how this whole war pans out- since the Yorozuya trio are returning back to earth, I hope we'll get to see the guys at Snack Otose, the Shinsengumi, Otae, the Yoshiwara lot and other characters as well. I've really missed them!!

Loved the ending because I'm just a huge fan when things end the way they begin with the whole intro speech thing.

For a season that's been 99% serious, it's done a lot of good.
We got a confrontation within Kagura's family as well the their past, we finally got introduced to the perfection that is Kouka, plus there were tons of awesome fights. Not to mention Nobu Nobu becoming a better person, Utsuro's past and Shoyo's disciples being re-united.

Role on final arc!!!!

Now I just gotta wait since I think we're getting more reruns. *_____*

You sure go overboard when rating this anime, its not even that special. But this one was very good because i saw that beast Kamui ripping yorozuya apart what a cool character, i think i like him in the series. But this one was short, i thought it would be 52 episodes i even prepared myself.

Well for the seemingly last season of this series, I must say that this was a lot more intense and action wise any of the previous arcs, it did had a bit of the Gintama humor in it, but not that much compared to any of the previous seasons.

Still I must say to have a change in really intense battles and a strong backstory really provided great development in both characters and story.

So all in all a pretty solid "last" season!

Another great season, so many things explained, plot twist everywhere, my mind couldn't keep up actually beyond my expectation for this season.

So i'm assuming Utsuro has split personality and Yoshida Shoyo is the good part of him ? but for the same purpose, to end his own life. It's kinda depressing to see his past, being accused as demon child and got killed over and over again no wonder he would break. Most important thing is Umibozu got his hands replaced and now he can fap normally, jk xD.

I like the idea of making 12 episodes for this season, keep short and on point. waiting for the season, hopefully soon.

Overall score 10/10, can't wait for more

i dont get all the bitching about the serious arcs.. dont get me wrong.. i love gintama humor obviously if you dont at least find gintamas humor funny you arent going to stick around this long to watch--

but while i cracked up at the funny parts, i was always looking for something a little deeper as well, and with the mentions of gins past in the war, first appearance with takasugi, to the yoshiwara arcs we got to see that. And while the humor is still there IMO this is what gintama excels at is having great humor but also a great story to go with it.

For example- while this was a mostly serious arc i still cracked up at the part on the ship where gintoki throws kagura into the water and says a request for paid leave is the same as a request for death in odd jobs, or shinpachis classic line about umibozus hair being more hopeless than his arms at growing back...

but still I think this serious stuff is phenomenal as well, i mean the scenes showing what utsuro is and how he became what he is were very emotional and heartbreaking, and the flashbacks to when gin beheaded him and utsuo standing there was just beautiful.

IMo this is a very logical and satisfying conclusion for gintama to head towards. As gintoki says - the comedy parts were about building up the bonds of the characters, gin was empty after the war, but meeting all the shows characters gave him life and enjoy life to the fullest again, which he will do anything to protect against the personification of the very emptiness he used to be, Utsuro, utsuro literally personifies the empty void in all of us, even kamui was talking about being empty...

so its lining up to be a battle between hope and emptiness.... and the fact that one of utsuros personalities, shoyo, was the source of that hope is just beautiful.

IMO, i think this is one of the most genius written manga ever.

I really didn't like this season. It was filled with pointless battles that were dragged out to eternity, with endless monologues spliced in just about every five seconds and almost no action. I really wanted to like it, because these are the characters I love so much, but the anime really dropped the ball this season in terms of pacing and action.

Despite that, I loved Kamui's and his dad's flashbacks -- those were the best parts of the season for me. 6/10 overall. If this season had the usual Gintama shenanigans along with the action, I wouldn't mind, but it felt so dry and lifeless. SA arc was much, much better.

I'm actually excited for Gintama re-runs. I watch 'em all the time anyway.

I always rate gintama 10/10, but this season got a 9 from me. Here I was wondering how epic gintama would be if everything was super serious, but one season full of awesome sword fights and serious dialogues was just a little too much. I enjoyed every single part of it, but the jokes seemed almost pushed and cringy. This season would've been great if we didnt expect lame jokes and goofy characters in-between all epicness.

Who the actual fuck says that Gintama is bad at drama? Have you fucking seen anything in life? Gintama's dramatic arcs are far better than any of your Naruto shit. Heartless stupid kids.
Gintama is far more than just a comedy. You should've realized that since the first season. For your comedy shit go watch south park.

So amazing to see, how Gintama evolved from trash and nonsense (in a good way) into a high quality shonen with amazing plot.
Will be waiting for the next season. This was just SO little!

Anyways, who knows, is there going to be a new season? I can't find any information about it.

It's over! D:

Gintama is still good no matter what. I love how it has elements of comedy, drama, slice-of-life and everything else that makes this show perfect in my eyes.

Poor Oboro imagine how life would've been like for him if he grew up with Gin-san and the rest.

I can see why some people might find this episode boring, nothing much happened but there was a lot of retrospect.

I hope this isn't the last season. :(

The problem with this season is not in the low amount or the low quality of the comedy but in the subpar and nonsensical plot developments - those really entangled reasons for Kamui's hate (Umibozo not explaining shit to his children, Kouka's decision) and the complexity of the Utsuro’s plan.

Yes, in idiosyncratic terms of battle shounen they make sense but Gintama knows better. It's previous serious arks were way more superior. They maid it distinctive from other shounens.
Now it became generic like them.

I agree.
I absolutely adore Gintama but somehow I just didn't really feel the emotional connection this time with Kamui's backstory and all. The whole Umibozu/Kamui/Kouka plotline just felt a bit contrived.
The Utsuro backstory was quite good at giving him a reason for being the coldblooded monster he is, but again, generic shounen.
But well, let's hope it all wraps up in a satisfying ending in the next season.

ooh! straight to the heart with that last scene! loved that callback to the first episode with Shinpachi saying the almost exact same lines as he did but with a slightly different tone.
...i'm going to back to watch Gintama from the first episode after this!

season-wise though, i feel this was the weakest one ever fielded by the Gintama franchise and it adapting one whole arc that took 12 whole episodes didn't help its causel. i know things are getting serious as we get near the end game of the whole series but some of the episodes near the end felt like a chore to sit through, as the humor from the early part of the season died out.
Gintama can pull off serious arcs but an arc this long without having comedy to balance it out really did not feel like Gintama, and even some of the later fights felt uninspired. Hell, the SA arc did not go for this long and still the fight between Sougo and Kamui, as short as it was, remains one of my favorite in the series.
Thankfully even the director (or at least the studio) seems to have understood the problem with the adaptation and the next one looks like it'll be adapting the more comedic chapters that Gintama. has skipped over. And thus i'll be eagerly awaiting the next Gintama adaptation as i did with this one, despite the misstep that was this season. After all a Gintama that doesn't make us laugh is not Gintama at all.

Lol people bitching about the lack of humor here..if anything this season wasn't serious enough. Gintama's previous serious arcs had a much better balance, here the comedy felt forced. Gintama's comedy is great but its better when its kept separate.

Disliked how the Harusame were complete jokes for an example

And some of the serious parts weren't written well compared to previous one's, like Kamui's contrived motivations and redemption, his character was kind of ruined for me.

The Joi 4 reunion + Utsuro, Umibozu character focus and Oboro backstory were the highlights but thats it. In general mixing the Yato family stuff together with Utsuro & Joi 4 was a bad idea, makes the whole arc feel messy and unsatisfying

Ok, well - even if I’m in the minority here, I still loved this season.
Yes, I truly adore Gintama’s humor. I REALLY love it. No other show, anime or otherwise, has ever made me laugh as much as Gintama. They have a gift, and it’s genuinely appreciated.

But also, to me, these characters have become interesting enough and I’m invested in them enough that I really want to know more about them and what makes them the way they are. So it’s ok if they have sad or rough things happen to them sometimes (even for 12 eps), because it just makes me love them that much more and appreciate the good times when they have them. I applaud Gorilla-sensei for fleshing out these characters so much that they almost seem like real people. I mean, as real as a fictional character can be, anyway. So I’ll cheer for them when they fight, I’ll cry with them when bad things happen, I’ll listen with interest when they open up about their past, and yes, I’ll laugh when they act like idiots.

Anyhoo - for this season as a whole, my favorite parts were ... (in no particular order)
- Takasugi’s awakening & the reunion of the Joui 4
- All of them spitting on Sakamoto!
- Bansai knocking out NobuNobu’s teeth again!
- Katsura’s awesome badass fight
- Zura’s backstory
- Gin getting pissed off at the “revised” scenes with Pakuyasa
- Sakamoto translating “FU” literally for Gin to Takasugi
- Kamui entrance while wrecking that lion guy
- Kamui vs Umibouzu
- Utsuro vs Umibouzu
- Meeting “Mami” Kouka, & Umibouzo’s crazy courtship backstory
- Baby Kagura & young Kamui and their family backstory
- Backstory of Abuto & Kamui, plus Housen
- Gintoki telling Kamui off, & proclaiming the Yorozuya as his family
- Kamui vs Gintoki, plus Kagura, Shinpachi & Abuto
- That Kagura/Kamui hug!
- Oboro’s backstory
- Utsuro’s backstory
- Takasugi’s show of respect for Oboro
- The graveside convo between Kagura & Umibouzo, & the 3 different flowers
- Hype for the battle to come!

Super long post, sorry! But there was a lot of good in this arc, IMO.
On to the next! #ForeverYorozuya

So that's the whole truth about Altana, the Tendoshu, and Utsuro and holy shit am I impressed. Who would've thought the author of Gintama who this show itself makes fun of, have thought about all that? I still vividly remember starting the first season of this show thinking it's funny but average at best but I keep hearing people say just hold on until episode 30-something when it becomes better and I did and I'm so glad I did because here I am now. Still, for hundreds of episodes I never knew much less expect even a tiny fracture of this storyline exists in this I mean this show has made me laugh uncontrolably like an idiot, cry like a kid who lost his candy, feel impressed at the battles, it made me feel all sorts of emotions and for me that's what Gintama is. This season is great and all but it just lack those things that made me love Gintama, this season is all serious. Looking forward to the sequels.

Absolute great arc. All these backstorys of Kagura, her brother Kamui, Umibouzu, Utsuro, Oboro and alle the others were so interesting to watch. A lot of thing now make so much more sense.

I also loved the fights. Seeing Katsuri finally in action, Kamui vs. his father, Umibouzu vs. Utsuro etc. was just amazing. Of course I wished it would have been more episodes, but I think now it will get even crazier. The earth is the new target of Utsuro and Gin-chan and his friends have to stop him.

Can't wait to see what will happen in the next arc.

10/10 for me.

I think its hard to compare this to other seasons since its 1 arc versus other entires that had multiple but I do think it wasnt the best regardless.
I apologize for quoting an old post because I'm an idiot who fell behind on the series, but I completely agree with this and I think that's why I struggled with the score.

While this isn't the first 12 episode Gintama season, it's the first that only focused on one arc, with little comedy, which wasn't the best either. There were a lot of major developments, both story and character wise, but some fell flat due to unnecessarily long dialogue and some comedic moments.

Oboro is one of the biggest things that bothered me. He's been here since Enchousen, appeared for 3 seasons, and we only NOW hear his backstory, which is strongly connected to Shoyo? I know Sorachi has a habit of telling backstories before a big boss death, but I hate to continually see it for characters that appeared in various episodes. The same thing with Sasaki last season. I probably would have cared more if it wasn't told at the absolute last minute.

Also finally revealing that Sakamoto left the war due to an injury. He's a happy go lucky guy and doesn't care about revenge, but to play that card when the guy who injured him reappeared and then turn it into a complete comedy moment, after Gintoki/Takasugi stated they would avenge him years before. That was awkward.

But I finally got the epic Joui reunion I've been waiting for and of course more Sakamoto screentime. He's such a awesome guy. I'm glad he seems to have tamed Nobunobu as well. The Kamui development was great too. It's nice to finally have a better understanding of his craziness and I'm looking forward to seeing how he's changed.

Though they really have to better explain how Kokoa and Utsuro are the same yet different. He can leave Earth and not die, or does it have to do with there seemingly being no Altana on the planet Kokoa moved to? Unless the answer is simply that they don't die instantly. She surly took ~10 years to die.

Either way I'll end my long post there. This season was entertaining enough for me to watch it all in 1 day so I still rated it a 9/10, though if I wasn't biased it would be 7/10. This is the first season I didn't rate a 10. The streak has ended....
