| Sanae from Clannad was a really good ma, sweet, kind, and she went out of her way to help friends of her daughter and future son-in-law. She did one of the more powerful and meaningful things one can do when she forced Tomoya to reunite with his daughter. Junko Kaname (Madoka Magica) was another really good mother. She was a strong woman who gave her daughter some of the best advice I've heard anyone give, and she obviously raised her daughter well before we as viewers got a chance to see her in action. And what we did see, it was obvious Junko ruled with a light hand, and resisted stepping in when there was trouble brewing, instead letting her daughter make her own mistakes. Even at the end when it was clear Madoka had fallen off the deep end and Junko lamented that for once she didn't understand her daughter anymore, she didn't just give up on her, she made one last desperate attempt to save Madoka. |

| Definitely Hana from Wolf Children. She IS one of the the best animu mothers. Besides her, the mother from episode 10 of Violet Evergarden. Anything more than that would be spoilers. Erin's mom from Kemono no Souja Erin. Balsa would also be a great mother if she had her own child. Hell, by the end of the show, she was more of a mother to Chagum than even his actual mom. |

| Hana from Wolf children is a great pick. Caring and self-sacrificing to any conceivable level. So is Sanae from Clannad, a great mother for Nagisa and a great mother figure for Tomoya. Shoya's mother in Koe no Katachi is just admirable. The way she handles adversity is amazing, and how much sense she makes in her approach towards her problematic son. Junko Kaname from Madoka Magica is a more unconventional type. She is deeply flawed, actually, and she doesn't manage to do things well from time to time. But the way she insists on trying in a situation that is clearly beyond any normal person's reach, her advices and the way she stands as a role model for Madoka are wonderful. More of a mother figure than a mother in the stricter biological term, but Marilla from Akage no Anne is also fantastic. Initially the cold and emotionally rejecting kind, the way she slowly warms up to her adopted daughter and stands for her was absolutely beautiful to watch throughout. Another mother figure I absolutely loved is Belle-mère from One Piece. Even at this point of the story it's clear how much of an effect she had on Nami's personality and empathy. And finally, in a more low-key way than the rest but I love how supportive Rin's mother from Yuru Camp is. Like, any other mother would freak out at the idea of having her daughter camp alone or ride 300 km in her moped the very day she gets her license. That's quite a level of trust while still being caring. On a different approach towards a very similar premise, there's Aoi's mother from Yama no Susume. I loved the little arc between the two and how she is naturally protective and her rationale doesn't allow her to give Aoi the freedom she wants, but ends up letting her go under some clear rules, showing that she is flexible. Both are different approaches that match the personality and confidence of their own daughters and the state of their mother-daughter relationship. |
