Bruh, Sanji's backstory just keeps getting sadder and sadder, and I mean at this point were we really expecting any of the Straw Hats' moms to be alive, other than maybe Luffy's? Also, I realize I say this all the time, but I can't wait to see Sanji kick all three of his brothers asses!
“I love heroes, but I don't want to be one. Do you even know what a hero is!? For example, you have some meat. Pirates will feast on the meat, but the hero will distribute it among the people! I want to eat the meat!” - Monkey D. Luffy

Great episode.

Poor Sanji, he suffered so much in the past. Just when you thought he'd lived through it all, his past has come back to haunt him. :(
The parts where little Sanji smiles in his Mother's embrace and the final moments with him running away were with Reiju saying that he'd someday meet kind people were really emotional. Reiju's final words to Sanji back then are kinda akin to what Saul told Robin.

To be honest, I'm glad that Sanji at least Reiju to help him out. Meanwhile, Judge just sucks.

This was a good episode and pretty sad.

Sanji's brothers are a bunch of punks, cool looking punks but still punks nonetheless. These flashback were as sad as I remembered. Imo Judge smothering his children with affection the way he did while making Sanji suffer was just as if not more infuriating than him being a jerkass to him. Sanji's mom and Reiju are the only decent relatives he had.

It was annoying to see Niji and Yonji beat on Sanji while he was down. Sanji could handle either of those two or Ichiji on his own, he proved it by oneshotting Yonji a few episodes back, but using Zeff as a hostage is just too big a disadvantage for him for now.

Of course there's a break next week.

I don't buy into Reiju being the only good among Sanji's family bullshit. She let things happen and didn't do anything to stop it. She's not good she's just the least evil. I hope Oda won't disappoint when fucking retribution comes down on Sanji's wretched family. I don't want them just beaten up or imprisoned I want someone to die preferably all of them or at least his father. But this is One Piece to probably not.

Damn what a sad past for Sanji. There's almost nothing good about it. Sanjis mother was a beautiful and nice woman. Reiju looks almost exactly like her.

So this was the beginning how Sanji learned himself cooking. But his family is the worst I've ever seen. Only Reiju tried to help him. All of these things which happened there must also be so hard for her. I mean compared to her brothers she's not a heartless monster.

How can such a father exist. There's not a single positive thing about him. Sanji leaving his family was the best choice he could have done. At least Reiju showed emotions and you could see that she cared about Sanji.

Next episode looks like it will be a lot of fun. Luffys stomache against Crackers endless biscuit ability :D

Incredible how only after 800 episodes do we truly delve into one of this series' earliest main characters - and the timing couldn't have been better in relation to the Straw Hats' progress to Raftel and how strong Germa 66 are!

Looking forward to Zoro's turn in the development spotlight sometime in the future!

Is it only me or did Sanji's father show signs of remorse in this episode?

I'm being serious here.

He couldn't kill his own son, but kept feeding him. Maybe his father accepted he was a little shit and let Sanji escape at that one part, the moment they hid his face (with his back turned as Sanji took off his helmet and left) I just had a feeling.

The king could've been mad that Sanji clinged so much to his mother along with some back story as to why he wants his kids to be strong other than "regaining the kingdom they one had." Even told him to leave cause his life has been nothing but shit.

Of course I could just be talking out of my ass but this is how I feel ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).

I think it's more like Judge thinks virtue is weakness due to some event in his past (pure speculation here, I am up to date in the manga and there is no way to know whether or not this is the case) so he TRIES to kill all emotion in himself
but no matter how hard he tried he couldn't kill all of his emotion.

While I completely agree with you towards Reiju, I don't think Sanji has bad feelings towards her. First of all, because he is Sanji and she is a woman, but more importantly, she was the only one who appeared to sympathise with him when his family wanted nothing to do with him. She is not good, not even now but to Sanji I think she made his life a little more bearable.

Hm, I'm still torn with Reiju. On the one hand she's not as mean as the others and helped him escape, though being less mean then those retarded brothers doesn't really mean a lot. On the other hand she was a huge coward for not helping him earlier and after all those she became quite the bitch seeing as she put those handcuffs on him. Overall I think I rather want her to die.

Man, I totally got teary-eyed when even Reiju started crying... Sure, she's far away from being perfect sister, but remember, she's still just a kid, probably in some way afraid of her intimidating father and unemphatic brothers. I can totally see why she was behaving the way she was.

As for her adult self, huh, no idea yet. I hope she has some bigger plans, and didn't just become like the rest of their family, because that would really suck.

Instead of quoting PrimeX and provoking another hilarious rant which is on the brink of genius comedy, I'll just say that forums are forever. Quoting people isn't solely to teach them something, but to add new information and interpretation to these threads which people will continue to use for years to come. It adds a holistic understanding to better the experience. This should be obvious in my mind, but I'll give PrimeX another pat on the back because you don't need to @ the people directly if it's an old post, you just need to reply to their points.

E.g. PrimeX suggested:
I don't buy into Reiju being the only good among Sanji's family bullshit.
However, this episode stated and the recent episodes have shown, she still had emotions, the other 3 brothers had no emotions.

I hope you all enjoyed this break down on forum etiquette which I completely made up according to my biases and wishes of how it should be used! Now onto the episode. The most striking thing about it was how obvious it would be that Sanji would become a cook. His father was shown smiling and saying how proud he was when it came to his warrior children, but some of the only positive reinforcement Sanji got outside of Reiju's pity was from his mom and his rat friend. Both of which were from cooking for them. After his mom died he kept cooking, presumably for her sake as she requested it beyond the fact that it's practically the only validation he has ever gotten. Serious validation at that, his mother seeing the hard work he put into a meal and making sure to appreciate it no matter how bad Sanji is, the inverse of his father abandoning him for being weak.

Reiju is a Hachi-like figure to me, although arguably far more morally sound. Both play the role of someone working for bad people and tolerating them, yet having doubts and compassion for those they are cruel to. However, Hachi didn't go against Arlong’s ideals directly until Arlong was defeated and he was saved by humans. On the other hand, Reiju went against Judge to free Sanji. Further, Reiju is a freaking child, Hachi was not. In my mind it would be much harder for Reiju to go against her family because of this! Yet she did. You could argue otherwise for sure, however, I wanted to make this point because Reiju went from a sympathetic villain who went against her morals due to her circumstance to a respectable ally when she made such a move.

Judge on the other hand got some intriguing content this episode as well. Sanji's imprisonment was immediately interesting to me. This was because he was fed good food! That was not something they had to do, yet it was the order of Judge from what it looks like. This is a small sign of compassion??? I had to wonder, was the imprisonment to stop the Germa 66 reputation from smudging due to Sanji's weakness yet his father didn’t want to outright kill Sanji or send him to his death? Or was it because Judge wanted to keep Sanji around as a pawn? But in the end, he suggested it was only two of those three. He didn't want to kill Sanji by sending him away, and he did not want Sanji to bring shame to their name, assuming he is truthful, there is some depth here. To tap into talking about potential compassion once more, I can't imagine that Sanji's mother would ever allow for him to be imprisoned and tossed away like this, maybe by keeping Sanji safe, Judge was also holding some kind of respect towards his wife's wishes, no matter how small.

It's been years since I've watched One Piece, but I forgot how out of its way the series goes to try to make villains seem disgustingly evil. At some point, it really does get comically absurd. It feels like the only thing missing is drinking tears off of Sanji's beaten face.

Nami going against Cracker despite knowing full well that it's more than likely that she'd end up dead was really brave of her. I suppose that this was another reminder that not a single one of the Straw Hat Pirates are to be uinderestimated~

While she wasn't able to do much whenever her little brothers are around, Reiju really stuck up for Sanji at the end there and that's pretty admirable. She's the only redeemable person in the Vinsmoke Family by far.

Sanji more or less got what he wanted with his father allowing him to escape from Germa but it definitely wasn't in the way he expected. Hearing how glad his own father is towards Sanji distancing himself from the family on his own volition definitely stung him more than having to fight him off. Absolutely heartbreaking...
