I believe that sometimes, when you see a series, movie or in this case anime, the soundtrack have an influence in you, even if you don't pay attention to the music. But I'm speaking about the score, nothing of the openings or endings

Dragon Ball Z. Without the original Japanese tracks it just doesn't have the same feel to it. I've watched a ton of anime with arguably better soundtracks, but none left the same impression on me. That's in part why I can't seem to enjoy GT, Super or any of the movies.

Special highlights are the Ginyu Force's theme, Imperfect Cell's theme and Majin Buu Saga's main theme.

Yeah, but my question it's not about songs, it's about the score. An example it's the Mark Mancina's soundtrack for Blood+

Kara no Kyoukai movies . . . great great soundtrack.

And Cowboy Bebop, for sure.

All of them of course. The soundtrack makes part of the overall, which is inevitably damaged the moment any of it's components is removed, be it music, animation or something else.

To me, pretty much the majority of the high scoring anime series would be affected without a good soundtrack, since I believe it helps create legendary moments.

In terms of which anime series in particular would be most affected, for me, it would be Monogatari. The soundtrack is what made me immersed in its storytelling.

Guilty Crown is the number one anime that comes to mind.
Hiroyuki Sawano the music god pulls this show closer to what it could have been, a fantastic show,
adding emotion to a nearly sunken ship.

I think soundtracks are essential parts of the story. They help set up the pace and the emotions of the moment, often without us noticing it. So I think every series that has good soundtrack will be crippled without it. They have to present a story with one spectrum missing. That's like painting without using one of the colors. Sure you can. But why?

The two most glaring ones that come to mind however are Kimi no Na Wa and Pokemon XYZ.

Kimi no Na Wa would be almost nothing without its godly music. The songs were awesome and the soundtrack did so much of the heavy lifting during the emotional scenes. It has to. The two main characters are too underdeveloped to carry the drama.

There's also Pokemon XYZ. The battles were pretty tame in the English dub because they took out the music scores present in the original. I watch an anime on dub as soon and as long as there's a good dub. Subs lead to disconnect with the scenes. And it's Pokemon. I grew up with their English names and I'll always know and refer to them by their English names. But hell, the dub was lame and I find myself switching to subs during battles.

Grimgar. Some people say that the soundtrack ruins it. Others point to it as a part in what makes it work.

Either way, it wouldn't be the same without it.

Yeah I feel the same way. I still watched and continue watching, but that soundtrack was what made DBZ epic.

Definitely Berserk and the very recent Gundam Thunderbolt.

Attack on Titan, Parasyte, Zankyou no Terror, and anything that could be categorized as 'suspense.' Some of the most intense moments in these types of series are mainly created from the use of music.

K ("Project-K") -- just because its one of my favorite OSTs

Gatchaman Crowds' music and colorful visuals work together perferctly to give the show a playful character.

Then theres shows like Death Parade, Mushishi, and Natsume Yuujinchou, where the music itself itsnt something you'd jam out to, but as a soundtrack, does a really good job of setting the mood for a scene.

Kaiba has a lot of great elements, but it needs its airy, dreamy and alien soundtrack. The sounds, which are both warm yet alien help to emphasize the familiar-yet-alien atmosphere of the anime. Those gentle melodies with the fragile, soft sounds help with the tone of the anime, which is in the end very personal.

If Guilty Crown wouldn't had Sawano's OST, I would probably rate it even lower. The same can be applied to all the series who have their OSTs composed by him (AoT, Blue Exorcist, Kabaneri...). The same for products with Yuki Kajiura's OST.

I could list more examples, but I would be all the day listing them, since there are a lot of series with very good soundtrack.

Uhh, it would be easier to answer the reverse, which series would probably still have the same effect on me without the soundtrack. Music is powerful, and it's way too important of a storytelling tool to be downplayed to the extent of removing it in most cases, even when the OST isn't noteworthy or is somewhat misused.

The only two anime I can think of that could possibly achieve a similar effect when stripped of their music without significant directing changes are The House of Small Cubes and The Tatami Galaxy, and even those are debatable.

Manga? Do you mean anime? The manga should definitely be read anyway since it's the best manga ever, and the 1997 anime works as a nice introduction to it.

Mmm, well I suppose Re:Creators from this season. It has an interesting concept, and I hope they'll do more in the ways of developing their cast - but at the moment, other than the crisp animation, I think it's the Sawano-soundtrack that keeps bringing me back to watch the show. Hiroyuki Sawano is just.. damn amazing.

I've realized over the years, that all of my favorites have one thing in common, the ost is amazing. And without them, most of them would probably still be favorites, but the music definitely has a strong effect on me. The right soundtrack can bring a good anime into AMAZING territory rather easily.

Fruits Basket: https://youtu.be/pBYVrxJSdbE
Try listening to that and not crying [if you've seen the show.]

The Vision of Escaflowne: https://youtu.be/3ig4M4hFUrY / https://youtu.be/eNbcKZwXjpY / https://youtu.be/PhHpp7WrQWo
I didn't even use Dance of Curse as an example, the rest the ost is so amazing...

Kimagure Orange Road is famous for it's soundtrack, in fact the reason I watched it six years ago was BECAUSE I stumbled upon it's first opening theme
https://youtu.be/Bes1BChV8Ww / https://youtu.be/e0KrQaakG64

Princess Tutu
Aside from all of the fantastic classical pieces used, ranging from more well known to more obscure, it also rearanged a few and made some rather nice original themes as well.
https://youtu.be/HJGfJHi1gic / https://youtu.be/sPpu1DIJEbM

City Hunter is another obvious choice for this, as fantastic as the manga is [in fact it's better than the anime, with the story], the soundtrack for the entire series run is so solid and incredible, it makes such an impact, that without it, I don't think it would've had near the success that it did.
https://youtu.be/s4GbzhJQvs0 / https://youtu.be/u_fVJBnuKrQ

Ghost in the Shell SAC 1st and 2nd GIG would STILL be thematically incredible and well done, but Yoko Kanno's soundtrack is what really made most of the scenes imo.
https://youtu.be/MBAsyCH-Eck / https://youtu.be/Xo63W0mXHRE
[pretty darn hard to find any of this ost on youtube, it's all blocked or copyrighted.]

Kaitou Saint Tail's ost was one of the things that really made it for me, as great as the voice acting was in this, there are some pieces that just really made the show for me.
https://youtu.be/nQUUrSA8nVQ / https://youtu.be/_MtV1TBK9lI

Katekyo Hitman Reborn!
The soundtrack for this show took everything that was great and made it 100 times better.
https://youtu.be/Fi2MiopsEJs / https://youtu.be/JXLmnpSJsAs

Eureka Seven
Definitely needed the soundtrack, from the soaring classical songs to the great techno remixes, perfect.
https://youtu.be/VTPhcKs_CYU / https://youtu.be/8CgtRvaQ6_8

Detective Conan
Especially early on, the music fit so perfectly, and sometimes it scared the shit out of me [appropriately so, I actually wish they would bring back the 'THERE'S BEEN A MURDER AND BOY IS IT BLOODY' music: https://youtu.be/TQUrHNU7SSU]
Also, can they please use this: [https://youtu.be/HweuBxCjdiU] song in the Shinichi/Ran romance scenes again? Thank you.

By far in a way, Code Geass would never be the same without its godly OST made mainly by Kotaro Nakagawa. Same applies to R2 as both OSTs make almost every big moment hype as hell, even if a lot of moments are questionable.

Macross. I know it's a space opera, but even the OST (especially the ones by Yoko Kanno) add so much to the freaking show. The song itself add value too of course. I never, ever cried during a movie or an anime, but man, I was sobbing really hard after finishing Frontier and then watching a live-performance of Diamond Crevasse on the Galaxy tour.

I may be biased because its my favorite anime of all time, but I dont think I would have enjoyed the essence of Highschool DxD if it didnt have the very emotional classical soundtrack that it does. The openings and endings also set the mood for the anime. I think all anime need good soundtracks to thrive, but thats just my opinion because im the type of person who kind of judges the anime on the OSTs and enjoyment so DxD wouldnt be as good if it didnt have the soundtrack it has.
