Possibly one of the best premiere episodes of this season.

Lovingly crafted cinematography and animation and some very intriguing subtext. There's certainly quite a bit of subtext about dealing with one's sexuality in this. I wonder how deep it will go. I don't think the show will go as dark or as deep into subtext as Yuri Kuma Arashi did, which makes sense as YKA was more about depicting real world issues, while this we don't know what this wants to do yet.

Alas this show won't be for more simple people so it is bound to be ignored by a lot of mainstream audience who watches for "simple" things and common tropes.

It is kind of sad that anything inventive or eclectic is dubbed "weird" in anime community tho.

Have a very good feeling that:
1. This show is going to be INSANELY underrated this season
2. This show is going to end up being fucking awesome.

Just from the first episode it gave off a very Gainax/Trigger-y feeling with the crazy animations, character expressions, art style in general, and with the big explosive way some of the fighting occurred.

Almost gave me a bit of a FLCL vibe as well in terms of cheer craziness.

The sound track was pretty fucking legit too.

I hope all of the episodes stay this way consistently.

We didn't really get into it yet, but it seems like the story wont just be madness either. She managed to bring that glowing "wish" stone back from the Pure Illusion, and when it entered the regular world all of the other stones also in the real world started glowing: the glasses guy in the chair had one, and it looks like that weird KKK looking cult had one or vision of one.

I also find the dynamic between Papika and Cocona really interesting already, and I'm eager to see how that fleshes out.

Yeah, I'm one of the people who saw the PV and knew it was going to be the dark horse.

This series has potential.

But for real I went through this entire thread, am I the only person who was wondering why Cocona is acting like she knew Paprika for a week when she saw her that fucking day jumping over a train? Did I skip something? Why did Paprika already know her name?

Other then that major gripe, this had one of the best first episodes of the season, 3gatsu and Yuri on Ice are the only ones that beat it.
every single one of my forum posts is dumb and invalid except for 1, I don't claim them it was a different person it was all fake

What a visual treat! I guess this episode was more about exploring and allowing the characters to play/establish themselves while also getting to know each other. I can't say much about anything just yet, I feel.
I don't mind the characters though (and kinda already ship them a little).

just gonna be honset that was completely awsome either for the animation and the sci-fi elements. it was colorfull too which makes me like this series more and more. not only colorfull, the fight scenes, even tho there were only little fight scenes in this episode but all of them looks BA to me especially when Cocona went angry/berserk. that was just wtf moment for me when i was watching this epsiode.

imo, this anime is a hidden gem from this season. although, im not gonna say its underrated.

feels like im watching flcl but modern version.
probably that's the main reason why im liking the series right now xD
or this series looks more like kyousougiga in terms of animation xD which is why i like this series too.
looking foward to the next episode.

-Watching this because I happened to like the OP
-That pre-OP scene was pretty bubbly and old-timey
-Hey it's the VA of the grandmoms from HanaIro and YozaQuar. I like her voice; it's pretty motherly, but I'm surprised at how few roles she has.
-The setting's unusually colorful
-Orange hair hanging creepily from the window during the basketball game shot
-Cocona's surprise in the middle of the forest was pretty fluidly animated, and the simplicity of the backgrounds is actually pretty soothing. This kind of art style is something that I haven't seen too often in the shows I've watched.
-Papika's a bonehead and she's pretty fun to watch
-Doubly so with her eating the path markers. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen that done in an anime before, only Western shows.
-No one told me this was a horror anime, with 392's brain fuckin moving like that
-This glasses retrieval mission is pretty smoothly animated, actually
-That giant splash seemed pretty visually spectacular
-Things seem to be actually starting in the next episode

I actually like the art style of this show for some reason, despite art being the least important factor in deciding the ratings for the shows I watch. This show just has a ton of charm in its colorfulness and all of the hand-drawn frames definitely add to that. This episode was pretty focused on worldbuilding, though, which means that the actual plot development was delayed until next episode. I suppose it avoids some lengthy exposition during the later plot parts. Papika definitely stole the show, and the episode was pretty enjoyable overall.

Papika reminds me a lot Nono from Diebuster, I was expecting that she would go on some "buster-machine mode"... but it seems Kokona did it instead...

Anyway, very fun episode and the animation for this episode was overall way above the usual tv show quality, I hope it stays consistent or, at least, doesn't fall that much.

Simple characters, beautiful animation and a creative story. I can deal with a slow build and the ending added some further intrigue. So far Papika seems both loyal and impetuous.

Very pretty, but disjointed, rushed and oddly boring. The comparisons to FLCL and Kyousougiga are totally off imo. You gotta give me at least a reason to care about your characters before you start flinging them into incomprehensible situations before quickly establishing a bond between two characters that have just met in the most contrived way possible.

The scene where Cocona save Papika was pretty awesome tho

Love the animation, but Papika was a complete headache and I'm not sure I can make it through 13 episodes of that.

Also I really didn't see how this was especially "creative" or "surreal".

mintkat said:

you're kidding...

creative: just about every visual (use of colour particularly) and sci-fi element, those weird snow creatures, the editing, and the ED (not the music (though that is great) - but the way it's designed/animated)
surreal: kokona's riverboat dream, that weird dark dimension just before they reach the snow place, and just the general feel of the show is surreal - kokona is just daydreaming her way through life.

Took a little while to find its ground, with the pacing a little off and starting with no kind of understanding - but at some point through I started to really like it. Very immersive and that art really makes it something else. A fine first episode that tells us just enough of what we need to know, looking forward to seeing more.

Just went over the first episode again, and noticed the girl laying motionless on the floor in the beginning, right before she said this one was another bust.
Now I'm only on episode 2, so I don't know if it has any relevancy to future episodes, but it was a good catch I missed.

Yes, so I see you finished the series, and there was no explanation.
My guess would be that they were on an adventure and she ended up dying on one of those adventures, as you can tell from her suit shes wearing when shes on the ground, the same papika has.
And to point out, papika probabaly didn't have the same connection she has with cocona, since it would seem she didn't have that sense of 'death' until after cocona expressed her fear of papika dying, and witnessing cocona almost dying.
So with that all explained, the mysterious dead girl may or may not have been killed either on accident or on purpose by papika, since you can see that where the dead girl is lying on the floor, is somewhat apartment like.
Now to continue the rest, as I'm only on episode 2, and I'm sure I'll have many more questions.

Lets see... I'm not sure what to think at this point, aside from the notion that they DO have LSD in Japan after all.

This does have an interesting art style, vaguely reminiscent of Gurren Laggan and Kill La Kill (well, sort of... clearly different from those, but a little non-standard like they are) and it seems like it may have some pretty decent animation, so I'm hopeful that it'll deliver something worthwhile.

Uhh, the ED is especially strange.
