wow as always Mushishi never fails to deliver, this episode was so bittersweet and as many of you already said it captured the true essence of Mushishi.

It's hard not to compare the 1st season with Zoku Shou, both 1st and 2nd cour.
While Zoku Shou remains "very Mushishi" which is never been a bad thing, for now I'd say that the 1st season is better than Zoku Shou, simply because 1st season had more impressive episodes than Zoku Shou, as far as I can remember.

Absolutely needs one or two rewatch for both seasons to solidify my current perception, of course.

But yeah, it's really sad to realize that I might never see Ginko goes to action again T_T

Urushibara-sensei, make new Mushishi stories, please.....

I didn't like this last episode much, I believe this one was the "weaker" one.
But I will rate it for all the others that were good, 9/10, I will always be a big Mushishi fan, looking forward to the movie!

Ginko's face is priceless lol.

The last 4 episode were really a masterpiece. Especially they were unpredictable, tragic, and meaningful.
This is the first season i rate 10/10. Looking forward for the movie looks interesting.

I had goosebumps, and was on the verge of tears twice. The sacrifice of the tree, the relationship between man and his environment, the irreplaceable loss of natural heritage, the MC's eventual reconciliation with the fact of his condition, following the realization that what happened to him was a blessing not an 'illness' that could be done away with medicine...there was so much going on here.

I agree with BigSimo, this was the best episode of the season. This was easily one of THE best episode of the whole series.

But again, I find myself perplexed by the opinion that the first season was somehow 'better', that the the rest is just more of the same. I disagree. The sheer variety is insane. The first season was Godly, no doubt, with some eps still standing unmatched in profundity, but it was inconsistent towards the latter half, with some episodes that were only decent by mushishi standards. From a technical point of view (production values, art, music, direction), like BigSimo pointed out, the first cour of second season (Or simply second season) was better. But in terms of consistency in quality and themes of the stories themselves, this season is my favorite. It also had a better variety of stories compared to the last season (first cour)

I am satisfied with the length of the series, and completely at peace with the fact that this is (almost) over. The fact that we had 2 specials, and 2 seasons is a miracle in itself. Some time ago, this seemed only like one of those dreams that would never come true. But here it is. And I still can't believe it. I feel grateful to everyone involved with the project. Thank you.

We're on the same page, but I do understand where the 1st-season-was-better sentiment stems from. In season 1, there were quite a few episodes that didn't follow the standard Mushishi line, because they reserved time for e.g the introduction of Tanyu as a character. In season 2, we're all pretty much familiar with Ginko's club and his backstory, so there was very little to explore in that area. While this didn't result in poorer quality, it did mean the 2nd wasn't broken down in "bite sized chunks".

I must also admit that I myself, especially towards the end of the 2nd season, was starting to miss some interacting between Ginko and his usual associates. We got much more scenes with Ginko referring to them (or writing them), but actually much less screentime of Ginko with them. It made him feel/seem much more lonely, which wasn't bad, but slightly odd after the slow but steady and thorough buildup of Ginko club members.

Damn. I love this show. This was a nice way to end the second cour of this season with a "happier" tale. I'm glad that the creators are giving us one last hurrah with the movie. I need a little mo' Ginko until I am satisfied.

This episode did a fascinating job at connecting the natural life cycle of the mushi to the mystical beliefs of the villagers. It goes to show how humans in general will seek answers to the unknown and do so in the best way available to them. For us, it's science. For those who came before science was widely recognized, it was the duties of the gods. For those villagers, it was confiding in and revering the tree. It's interesting how, despite the tree not having a conscious will of its own, did so much to contribute to the well being of the village and mountain.

Without a doubt this episode had something strong attached to it. During the scene with the villagers going to cut down the cedar tree, I was completely captivated by its presence. It felt as if it was demanding my full, unwavering attention. I couldn't but feel at a loss when it was being cut down, as if something truly precious was being lost (as Kanta's mother puts it). I never imagined another anime would make me feel so connected to a tree again like Kobato did. An ominous sensation engulfs me when I think about how long that tree was watching over that land and how many experiences trees have witnessed throughout the world in general.

I couldn't help but grin ear to ear when Kanta was like "It's a very long story and I may never finish it", that line alone just drove it all home as to the longevity of that tree (and trees in general).

Well as much as I wish this journey would continue, I suppose the end was inevitable. I'm at least happy that Mushishi reached a strong and memorable conclusion and I look forward to the movie this summer. This is yet another indisputable and well earned 10/10 from me. This portion of Zoku Shou in particular resonated with more and felt more profound as a whole. Major respect to Artland for literally bringing Mushishi to life and I can only hope there will be an episodic anime of this caliber again one day.

Message-wise , this episode definitely is the best among the episodes.
Very well-thought storyline with underlying metaphors about man and nature which captured the true essence of the series.

Man, it's all over. But at least there's a movie coming. After that, I don't know what to do anymore.

And oh, still a 10/10 in my list. Mushishi is life!!

It was a good ending for this season, but not for the series as a whole. I just want the ending to be something lifechanging about Ginko. Not just another story. But still better than Zoku Shou and great series in general. Any chance for season 3?

Really good episode, not one of my favorites but man, did this episode make me want to run out of my house, find the nearest tree & hug the ever living crap out of it. Kanta's development was expected but well executed and the earthquake took me off guard and rather good. Last cour, I listed my favorite episodes so I'll do the same, in order of air date . . .

I. Lingering Crimson
II. Azure Waters

Yep, that's it. Does this mean this is the weakest season of Mushishi? No! It means those episodes, for me, were head and shoulders above the rest this time & *that* is really saying something. Cushion of Grass, Fragrant Darkness, Thread of Light & Lightning's End are all some episodes that I really thought were incredibly strong pieces. & this one is up there.

To limit down my thoughts on this cour as a whole, it was great as usually & provided two of my all-time favorite episodes however it also provided two of the weakest Mushishi episode with Hidden Cove & Sea of Otherworldy Stars. Visually, the show is great, it always has been but this seasons provides several of the best imagery Mushishi has ever shown. But the shining star here, at least in terms of production/technical aspects, is the sound direction. Everything heard in Mushishi, everything, is amazing. I believe dedicated an entire paragraph to it in the episode discussion for Azure Waters but it's deserves a shout-out here. Mushishi has perfected sound in ways that no other anime, that I've seen anyway, does. However, Mushishi pretty much had that in day one something that feels a little more unique to this cour is uniformity. Thematically speaking, there's a lot less variety, at least in the topics covered. Several episodes focused on the relationship between parent/mother & child/boy and several focused on relationships becoming distant. Each episode delivered a different message or had a different approach to it & there were several episodes disconnected from this pattern but it's still a much more noticeable pattern than in previous seasons. This season was another fantastic edition to one of the best anime series out there. Like the previous entries, it just misses out on a ten but among all the 9's I've ever given, Mushishi is in a class of it's own.

As for how Zoku Shou or the 3 "seasons" compare to each-other, I like them about the same? My favorite episodes pull a lot from both, probably the least here since I can more easily narrow down my two favorites from it but I can't say I have a favorite of the three. I will say though, Sore Feet Song>>>Shiver.

Real quickly though since I have the episode list opened up (no way can I remember the names of all these episodes off the top of my head) I'm going to quickly list my favorites from the series. I'm doing this partially because I'm interested in how long the list will turn out. I'm going to spoil tag it don't worry & there are several others that won't make this list that I consider favorites or awesome but I'm trying to limit it to the highest caliber of favorites. Also, been years since I seen the first season, so some episodes that I believe might make it on during rewatch (Pillow Pathway & Sleeping Mountain for example) are being left off. In order of air-date . . .

Okay, so only 12 episodes. Re-watching the first season might bump it up but interestingly enough, original & Zoku Shou had the same exact amount of episodes. Goes to prove my, like them about equally comment I guess.

Can't wait for the movie & trust me when I write this, the fact that I'll never get see Mushishi in theaters when I know it's actually going to be playing in theaters, really depresses me.

Damn what a way to finish a season.
This has got to be one of my favourite stories of Mushishi.
It's even connected to Ginko and Mushi-shi's aswell :)

The earthquake was terrifying and so intense.
The village once again saved by the giant tree and will live on through the man.

Glad they didnt derive from the way Mushishi was set-up.

10/10 once again.

Question for people that have read the manga.

How many stories are there still left to adapt? I've heard the upcoming movie will be an adaptation of the last couple of chapters but are there any others that still haven't been done?

Only one more story consisting of 2 chapters are left to adapt, which the upcoming movie will cover. That'll be the end of Mushishi, unfortunately.

The source of longing that we search for, the harsh realities of necessity, and the transience of society. The communal spirit; individuals of the larger whole, value and passing of collective memory, the inevitable cycles of loss; the exchange of generations. All in the shade of nature's magnanimity.

The sheer depth and sentimental wonder of this episode had me to tears.
