But as expected, they're low. No long-running anime really sells that well iirc. it was popular in japan but the story was finished so there wasnt a drive to buy the bds which were split into two $170ish 6 ep volumes. + honestly as a consumer id rather go out and buy the manga instead of bds so considering all that it didnt sell too bad. |

*4. 13,102 13,102 ARIA The NATURAL Blu-ray BOX Couldn't have asked for more love! Thank you! Also, pleasant to see both KonoSuba and Gundam IBO doing pretty good! Both got their well deserved sequels announced already! Despite the decline in numbers, Gintama remains the only long running shounen that makes the cut-off once in a while, but last 15 episodes have been sensational so it's nice to see it there. So, GATE numbers are halved, reflecting how bad the sequel season has been? And good to see Boke Dake numbers. Deserved nothing more. |

Its source material boost was huge. Easy to see why Konosuba got a season two, hopefully with a little higher budget and a few more episodes! |

Looking at this list to judge whether a series was a success or not in japan seems rather foolish to me since there are a lot of other factors. this is just one piece in a puzzle and all the other pieces are missing(they aren't really revealed to the public) If 2.6k is a failure then basically half of the season is a failure and there was some sort of loss of money involved... I mean reikenzan didn't even feature in the list so it must have done less than 1.5k and its getting a second season |

Top selling anime such as Osomatsu san or Monogatari series(50k+disc sales) are definitely very popular at least among certain poulation. Does that mean less selling anime are not liked in japan, that is another different matter. Well just look at video recording number rankings. This is anime recording on TV 100.0 - Lupin III *91.5 - One Piece (Up 2 positions) *90.4 - Youkai Watch (Down 1 position) *88.2 - Doraemon (Down 1 position) *72.8 - Boku Dake ga Inai Machi(Erased) *67.4 - Detective Conan *64.6 - Gundam Iron Blood Orphans *61.3 - Gintama *60.4 - Dragon Ball Super (Up 1 position) *59.5 - Assassination Classroom 2nd Season (Down 1 position) January 2016 Tokyo Torne Ranking(recording ranking by Play Station Users) 1- Boku Dake ga inai machi 2- Gundam Iron Blood Orphans 3- Dagashi Kashi 4- Lupin III 5- Ajin 6- Myriad Colors Phantom World 7- Active Raid 8- Osomatsu-san 9- Girls Beyon the Wasteland 10- Bubuki Buranki February 2016 Tokyo Torne Ranking *1- Boku Dake ga inai machi(Erased) *2- Gundam Iron Blood Orphans *3- Dagashi Kashi *4- Osomatsu-san(Up 4 positions) *5- Myriad Colors Phantom World(Up 1 position) *6- Lupin III (Down 2 positions) *7- Ajin (Down 2 positions) *8- Gate 2nd season (Up 5 positions) *9- Dimension W (Up 2 positions) 10- Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash (Up 4 positions) http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1361735&show=300#post326 |

@umashikaneko Maybe I should re-word myself then. What's the reasoning for the low sales? You would think people who liked the anime would support it by buying the disk sales. Yes, it got a HUGE boost in manga sale, but the BD sales are really low. As someone who thought it'd go over 5K, it's kinda funny that it didn't. |

With the next Gintama volume having some of the most important episodes of the series, hopefully it hits the top 10. If the recent rise in Gintama manga sales is anything to go by, the next volume should sell much much better than it has been. However in saying that, it's still way above average for a long running Shonen series. Not to mention Gintama still gets a lot of it's revenue through merchandise. |

Erased is very well received among Japanese fans and even got a live-action adaptation of it which proves the series popularity. just remember Anime BD have high prices which a lot of people can't afford. |

Since it's over, buying it doesn't support the series as such. You support the author more by purchasing the manga as their royalties are much lower on the discs since there are many other people involved. There are many, many factors that go into the number of discs sold and whether that means success or failure of the project. Often the Noitamina stuff gets enough money from the TV deal that the disc sales are less important but Aniplex still wants to discs to sell well so Aniplex probably doesn't see this is any sort of big success. They don't expect all their shows to be big hits of course but they hope to get their money back at least from what they put onto the production committee table as the disc producers. Still, these shows must make some money overall, otherwise big businesses like Sony, Bandai... they wouldn't bother if it didn't make money. Bandai is pulling out of the Arcade game market because it makes no money for them anymore. If anime was losing them money, they'd drop it pretty quickly. Same goes for Sony, they aren't making anime just to say they're making art, expressing themselves... they're making anime, music, etc. to make money. The shareholders will punish them if they continue money losing business practices. |

Tyrel said: just slightly reminder that tokyo ghoul is not even breaking 3K when releasing first volume IIRC. @umashikaneko Maybe I should re-word myself then. What's the reasoning for the low sales? You would think people who liked the anime would support it by buying the disk sales. Yes, it got a HUGE boost in manga sale, but the BD sales are really low. As someone who thought it'd go over 5K, it's kinda funny that it didn't. disc sales is extreamly pricy. not everyone can afford that. they are targetted to very niche market, that's why. in general, common people will prefer to buy original source since it's much cheaper. only hardcore fans *cough *cough otaku would commonly buy that. @hpulley , if it's not that profitable, why it soo common nowdays? i though anime producer got very nice profit, that's why they keep producing this kind of shows. |

Osomatsu-san still selling like hot cakes. Nice, really hoping it gets another season in the future. Owarimonogatari breaking the 20k+ mark too. |

It's nice to see that Aria still selling well after all these years. |
But it's important to remember that a movie review is subjective;it only gives you one person's opinion. http://www.classzone.com/books/lnetwork_gr08/page_build.cfm?content=analyz_media&ch=30 It doesn't matter if you like LoGH,Monster etc.If you are a jobless or college/school dropout living in your mom basement, you are still an unintelligent loser. Taste in anime does not make you a better person. If elitist don't exist, casual pleb and shit taste also don't exist. |

Kuma said: I didn't say it wasn't profitable. Everyone else is claiming that shows with 2.6K disc sales aren't profitable and we just don't know that. There is a much bigger picture out there beyond the disc sales. It is fine to follow disc sales, celebrate high sales and be worried about low disc sales but the question of what shows are profitable and which shows are not profitable cannot be answered here alone. Even for a show which on the whole is profitable, there may be winners and losers at the production committee table depending on what products and merchandise sell well and which do not. In fact I specifically said unless it WAS profitable, big companies like Sony and Bandai would not be involved. Small companies can gamble it all but a money losing division in a big company will eventually be sold or shut down.... @hpulley , if it's not that profitable, why it soo common nowdays? i though anime producer got very nice profit, that's why they keep producing this kind of shows. |

Osomatsu-san v1 107,906 Osomatsu-san v2 78,480 Osomatsu-san v3 48,121 Konosuba v1 9,516 Good to see Konosuba v1 selling well. 10k average doesn't seem too unlikely if the rest of the volumes continue to have consistent sales. The first non-event ticket volume of Osomatsu-san did a bit better than I expected and had a smaller drop when compared to Love Live season 2's non event ticket volumes. 60k seems unlikely but it could get close to it after a few weeks. Good to see v1 and v2 still selling.
