What the hell? Seriously, that was soo weird. The animation isn't 2D but I find it just strange how it all started especially with the head and stuff.

Ha, bet this will qualify for weirdest show of the season. Those glasses though.

This "thing" and Sekkou Boys are two of the most retarded ideas, and is also the most awkwardly executed show of this season, is stuff like this makes you keep coming back to anime always thinking "Why?"

3D and food is not a good combination. I gave it a shot because the wacky synopsis, but the visuals are too off-putting.

Aye, Sushi Police squad is based AF! Why are these episodes so short? Had it been a full length show, it would've instantly taken the title of AOTS.

Now, it has to compete with Sekkou Boys for the honor, which should make for an interesting (and epic) contest.

To understand this show and why it exists, you need to be familiar with japanese politics and the recent-ish events, involving the popularity of nationalism being on the rise and stupid statements about "foreigners" that the politicians have made

In 2006, Japan's Minister of Agriculture pushed a proposition for creating an inspection force that would judge the foreign restaurants and whether they can call their products sushi. He claimed that most of foreigner sushi is not sushi and only taints the japanese culture.. The said taskforce would in secret infiltrate foreign sushi restaurants be it as workforce or clients, with the japanese government pressuring the sushi restaurants that are "not worthy to be called sushi".

The idea was just so silly and outrageous that most of news outlets made fun of it by coining the phrase "Beware, the sushi police are coming!"

For those interested this is a good read by washington post

Sushi Police is essentially a series of comedic shorts that satirizes Japan's obsession with nationalism and twisted view of foreigners. It might seem to be weird for the foreigners, but Japan's view towards its culture and the outrage that "foreigners mingling with it" causes is extremely topical.

As such the short accomplishes what it sets out to do - it showcases just how outrageously silly such ideas are and how silly japan's obsession with "japanese culture only for japanese" is.

Not saying a comedy show about a team with a robot going around shutting down non authentic sushi isn't possible. But this show is just trying to be bad. 3DCGI animation, that's unique if you're generous. It's 5 minute episodes, I think Hetalia was the only really good show to get away with that. And the first thing we see for comedy is a mans head rolling around... because that's not creepy. I'm putting my money on Ojisan to Marshmallow this season for a 5minute show

Interesting, thanks for the background info! I could tell from this episode (and the PV) that this was satire. I mean seriously, it's ridiculous of course, and we've got headlines like "Fiends from Japan." 3DCGI complaints I can understand, especially if it's not cel-shaded, but some people might not expect this sort of "comedy." Satire's not for everyone, although Sushi Police might go right over people's heads.

I thought this was somewhat funny :) It works as a short.

Not sure what to think of this show. It could be fun, but it was too short to really tell. I guess this episode just provided a flavour of the show; maybe we'll get to the meat in future episodes (hopefully).

Interestingly enough, the animation style gives the show a western feel.

THANK YOU. I've been waiting for someone to explain it, although it was quite obvious that there was some kind of satire behind it. Even the names of the characters and their designs add a lot to this comic -or whatever it is- effect. Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki... Why is it that they picked the names of three internationally known motor companies? Am I the only one who found this interesting or is it still just a random choice of names?

Anyway, the idea is intriguing but the animation is still.... uhh...

If this series is 3 mins long with total of 12-13 episodes, then I think I can pretty much tolerate it. I'll try my best to complete this since I don't have any series in my list which is scored 1.

0.5/5 - Probably worst series of this season.

Note: I rarely give episodes 4 and 5 which represents excellent and masterpiece.

Thanks, Fai, it all makes sense now.

This was sooooo wacky and fast-paced like holy crap I love it. The CGI made me do a double-take, but I love the style. I don't even know if it's motion capture, but with the character models, I don't think it is, but if Monster House could have odd character designs and still be motion capture, than so can this. (Secretly hoping it's not motion capture, though.)

This dates back to the time when EVERY country was doing the same thing: France enforcing the trademark on Champagne (which is why all non-French brands are now called "sparkling wine"), Korea trademarking Kiimichi (so that only Korean companies could call it that), and various other countries doing that with their well known products (Parmesan cheese having to come from Parma region of Italy being another). So there was nothing particularly unique about Japan doing it with sushi.

So the WP was just promoting the "oh those Japanese" meme that is so popular among Western elites and people on the internet.

And honestly, I wouldn't mind there being a "Sushi Police". When someone messes up with sushi, not only does it taste bad, but it is also very likely to make you sick. It's raw fish after all. It takes far more training than just slapping fish on rice to make good sushi, as anyone who has had great sushi knows.

When I added it to my PTW list I thought it would be something like Itoshi no Muco, but it's totally different climate. I'm wondering if one need to understand the culture and recent history of Japanese media to enjoy this show.

Wow, I never knew something like that happened.
I'm also a sushi afficionado, and am very aware of the weird-sounding maki sushis. Dragon roll, centipede roll (reminds me of Dragonball and Kaneki whenever i read it in the menu. XD), etc. I'm also curious how the Japanese find them.

I found the show at least interesting. For me, it's more about education and cultural insights. But still, it wouldn't hurt to give it a better animation at least, right? Yeah, they could've given it a 2D animation and a story of Shokugeki no Souma's level, but I've no problem with the 3D either. (It also gives it a more internationally catering appeal. This show also teaches many things about sushi.)

The only thing that bothers me is Kawasaki. I honestly thought he was creepy. lol Other than that, I'm looking forward to the series. Yoroshiku~
