| This guys voice is driving me crazy. The majority of anime I've watched has been around a 50/50 split between sub and dub. This guys voice pops up so often and stands out so much it really bothers me. I just can't understand how some dude in his mid 40s, and a voice that resembles the sound of nails on a chalkboard, can get so many voice rolls as leading characters. I can tolerate him when he's a small side character, but the instant I find he's the leading role, I cringe just trying to make it through a single episode. There's several anime out there that would've been a hell of a lot more enjoyable without this guys squirrelly, nasally voice. |

One of Ayres' main values to ADV/Sentai and Funimation over the years has been that he sounds 12 despite being in his 30s (or now 40s). If he had never gotten into anime dubbing, there'd probably be a lot more complaints about "this kid sounds WAY too old!" or "I can't BELIEVE they cast an old(er) woman to play that teenage male MC!" While I do feel has hasn't been a great casting fit for a few roles here and there, I generally don't have a problem with him. Or maybe I find it harder to dislike performances from someone I've met in person on several occasions. Besides, Kappei Yamaguchi and some other Japanese VAs have similar traits to their voices, and no one ever complains about them. And if you want dub VAs who were anime fans first and care about the shows they work on and the medium as a whole, you don't want to lose the likes of Greg Ayres. |
| Depends on the role. I wouldn't want anyone else other than Greg Ayres to play Koyuki in Beck. He was absolutely perfect in that role. But Sunohara in Clannad? No. Taichi in Kokoro Conect? Nooooooo. Masato in Little Busters? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Granted they were all awful casting choices so there wasn't a whole lot he could do. The latter two were the result of an issue that Sentai had in one of their darkest periods where his brother Chris Ayres (Great actor, mostly terrible director) would just give him lead roles left, right and center even if he was clearly not the right guy for the role. Fortunately, Funimation seem to be a bit smarter when it comes to casting him in roles that suit his vocal range (Although I'm not a fan of his Monokuma) and even though Sentai still have their issues the aforementioned problem seems to be a thing of the past. I've got nothing against the guy himself. It seems more logical to put the blame on Sentai for casting him in such horribly ill fitting roles. |

| I can see why his voice can annoy people, but it's perfect for some roles - he sounded so wimpy and weak as Ganta Igarashi in Deadman Wonderland, which is a 100% perfect fit for that character. Whenever you want a lame-ass kid to be voiced, Greg Ayres is your man. He knows how to sound wimpy. |

Actually, yes, people do bash seiyuu with similar traits, or at least Yamaguchi. Have you completely missed all the complaints about Japanese Teddie/Kuma (Persona 4)? Because he was voiced by Yamaguchi |

| A few mis-casts aside, his voice does match the characters that he plays really well, like Clannad's Sunohara. I'm watching Shinsekai Yori at the moment and I find his performance as Satoru to be pretty good. =) |
| I couldn't stand his voice when I'd just started watching anime, but now I think his voice is fine. It can get annoying when he's miscast i n roles that don't suit him, but he's given some fairly strong performances, like in the aforementioned Beck and Ghost Stories. His comic delivery is better than a lot of other dub VAs. |

| His best role is Chrono from Chrono Crusade and he's great as Goku from Saiyuki. And I LOVE him as Negi Springfield....omg too adorable. So yeah, I like him a lot in specific roles. I don't think he fits EVERY character he's cast as....but I strongly like those three....and he's friggin amazing in Nerima Daikon Brothers....like have you HEARD him sing!? |

| I actually don't mind his voice. One of my favourite performances of his is Satoshi in DNAngel. However, even I think at times his voice can get a bit screechy (Sunohana). |

| I hated his voice for Keisaku Satou from Shakugan no Shana. It did not fit at all. On the other hand I don't think he is a bad voice actor. Really liked him as Tomoki. Like most dub actors, their voice is meant for certain roles and characters. Most time (I'm lying lol. 90% of time) they don't work. But when they do. They work! He just needs more roles that fit him. |
