"I prefer Dub over sub "

That's fair. Not much left to say about it anyway, since I haven't seen it still and you're not a huge fan anyway. :P

So have you started watching anything from the new airing season yet?
Benienma Jan 4, 2016 11:53 AM
Huh, I guess I'd never really thought about that. I've definitely noticed the kind long explanations/speeches that you're talking about, and I suppose if they're taken straight from a manga that would explain why they were a bit out of place. Another example of how the two mediums are different and should be treated differently. And then of course in stuff like Light Novels and VNs which can easily incorporate narration and inner-monologue, that sort of thing is more difficult to smoothly work into an anime. Most of that stuff has to be telegraphed through the visuals or dialogue, which sometimes can feel a little strange as well.

Yup I'm the same way pretty much. Like the Fate series was one I've loved for a while, but only a few months ago did I really start reading into the VN, and while I do love how much more the VN covers, the anime is still great. As a self contained story they cover everything the viewer would need to know and execute it just fine! It's just not possible to cover ever detail of something in an adaptation that's shorter/smaller than the original source, so it's not really fair to judge it in a way that expects it to.
Benienma Jan 2, 2016 2:11 PM
Dunno if I will ever play it either, so it'll forever just be word of mouth, but it also wouldn't be the first like that either. Adaptations always are judged very differently by those who were fans of the original than by those just getting into it for the first time.
Benienma Jan 2, 2016 12:45 PM
Yeah I can't really dispute any of that. I had pretty much all those same problems with it too.

Haven't gotten around to watching most of those "so bad it's good" type series yet, but I'm sure I will someday. Although when it comes to School Days I've heard the VN is actually pretty dang good compared to the anime.

Yeah I mean we're pretty much on the same page there. It's also kinda cool to meet someone else who doesn't think Lain is an absolute masterpiece or something. I didn't go as low as a 1 for it, but honestly it's extremely average, and doesn't really handle the psychological stuff all that wonderfully. Pretty much the only strengths I saw in Lain where stuff like the setting, tone, and atmosphere. Pretty much everything else was kind of a mess...

I mean that's true, but I still wish all in all it was more diverse. I don't want everything to cater to me, otherwise you don't get as much diversity in the kinds of people that watch it. While I do prefer positive conversation, I don't necessarily want to just talk to people who have exactly the same opinions as me.

Actually no I'm a guy, but I still find myself annoyed by how much anime in general caters to males, and how few good female leads there seems to be overall. Part of why i appreciated Shokugeki no Souma so much is that while it does tend to mostly focus on the girls during it's fan service moments, there's a considerable amount that include guys in the love as well. Granted I sort of wish none of it was there to begin with, it's nothing that made me hate the series. I still loved the crap outta it. But then again I want to be a chef myself so anything focusing on food and such is right up my alley!

Benienma Dec 31, 2015 3:27 PM
Yeah the toothbrush bit was one I had in mind while saying that. And that's sort of what I mean by it's fan service moments. It seems to be less "boobs and panties in yer face" and more suggestive moments or a lot of innuendo. Again at least from what I've gathered. Could be very wrong on that.

Besides, it's not that I mind that stuff too much in reality, it's just something I'd prefer not to be there in most cases. Or at least don't make it entirely female oriented you know? I may like the lady folk myself, but there should be more "manservice" around too. That's not really on Monogatari anymore specifically but rather the industry as a whole I guess.
Benienma Dec 31, 2015 2:25 PM
Ah I gotcha now. Well don't worry, even if I do watch it and don't like it I wouldn't blame you anyway. Especially for a series like Monogatari, where even having seen almost none of it I can tell it's a very... different kind of anime, even by Shaft's standards. I will ask though, do the "fan servicey" bits detract from the experience much? From clips I've seen as well as hearsay from others it seems like it could have a lot of those moments, albeit more suggestive than visually graphic.

Oh I'm sure that's not at all what they intended for it, which kind of makes it that much more amusing. :P
Benienma Dec 31, 2015 12:00 PM
I'll give it another shot pretty soon. I trust your judgment on that, plus it's a Shaft series and I'm always up for more Sha-... always up for more of their work...
Seriously why they gotta go with a studio name like that!?
Benienma Dec 30, 2015 12:15 PM
I think a lot of what turned me off from it wasn't being dialogue heavy, but rather how it presents so much of it through very quick flashes on screen and such, at least that's what it was like in the first episode. I felt like I was missing a lot of content, despite being told most of it is not all that important. I just have to be willing to either pause it a bunch or accept it and just not worry about them.

Dunno for sure if that's what would happen or not, but I'd rather not risk that being the case at least. That and saving OPM for a later date just means I have something likely very good waiting for me in the future. :3
Benienma Dec 28, 2015 5:18 PM
I get that. Sometimes a good comedy can lift the spirits, but there are times when that stress may just make you resent something you try to enjoy rather than getting rid of the stress. At least from my experience.

I tried getting into Monogatari a while back, but I think it may have just been odd timing. I really didn't get into it much, but from all the stuff I've seen and heard of it I do think it'd be right up my alley.

OPM looks great, but I wanna wait til the hype dies down a little. I don't want it to be up on this pedestal then not meet the expectations the hype made for it.
