While so many aspects of this show are great, I really loved the panel selection of this episode. When Smile was analyzing Sanada letting him think he was going to win and then turned on his afterburners, I loved the way they had his panel push down on his opponent. Lovely little scene.

Of course the dialog was first rate as well. Lots of good laughs and feels there as well from all the characters.

The one thing I hope doesn't happen is for Peco and Smile to be the modern equivalents of their respective coaches. Any other outcome and this show rocks, that one scenario though I will really have to reassess. But until then, excellent show.

I really like your blog, please do more! There's a lot of scenes in Ping Pong where I end up rewinding to admire the cinematography. Specially the shots of Dragon in the restroom. Great camerawork.

This next match is going to be intense. If Peco does make it to the semi finals I have a feeling history might repeat itself. Smile's going to do the same thing butterfly Joe did, and let his friend win.

Smile was... smilling :')
That was really touching, those flashback. Fucking awesome friendship.

BUT, can Peko win? Kazama is a monster and Peko have his knee injured. He rushed a lot against his last opponent and Kazama is really another match. I don't think he can win... So it will be Smile vs Kazama? Will he play seriously if he's fighting Kazama in the end? It was his motivation, to fight his hero. Without Peko, Smile isn't Smile.

Kazama is one cold motherfucker, but he sure does carry a lot of weight on his shoulder. People have so much expectation from him that he can afford to lose. I really feel bad for him somehow.

It's funny to see some character back, like deppressed dude, Demon and of course, China.

"I'm the hero and don't you forget it!" god DAMN I love Peco.

I have no idea what the real outcome may be. There are so many plausible possibilities.

I'm thinking maybe Peco will defeat Kazama because Kazama will be hesitant due to him seeming to feel lost lately and there is kind of a parallel to the original fight between the 2 best friends and one with the knee problems. The one with the knee before was Kazama's dad and his son is on the other side of the conflict this time. Then Peco will face off with Smile and go all out and they will have fun and Smile will once again smile before he inevitably defeats a worn down Peco and not make the same mistake that coach did. Peco may lose, but he will still be a hero as he saves Smile from his robotic alter ego.
Slaine did nothing wrong.

Pretty sure that Peco is gonna win against Kazama because he's the hero and Kazama is the dragon. And everyone knows that the hero is gonna slay the dragon.

What an episode. Kazama's character has even come a surprisingly long way since he was introduced in the show. I absolutely love how this show has more character development in 9 episodes than most shows will ever have in multiple cours. It's pretty easy when you actually give something of a fuck like Masaaki Yuasa seems to though.

It's not the only show I'm watching this season, but man the contrast between the overall effort and care I see put into making this show what it is and a lot of the other stuff that is really popular this season is just embarrassing. There continues to be something about shows that transcend and operate out of the standard circles of otaku oriented cliched series, it's such a different experience watching this and then watching this and then watching generic light novel adaptation with Brother/Sister MC duo #91247 which I'm pretty sure could describe more shows than it probably should right now.

"Hero Kenzan"

great episode. I loved each match. I love how cool and merciless Tsukimoto plays. I love the passion Peco has in his game. And I love those flashbacks about their childhood. Their freindship is so real and cute idek. :)

Can`t wait to see the match Peco vs. Kazama.
I think Kazama is playing ping pong for the wrong reasons that is why Sakuma felt like crying for him and well Peco is awesome, OK?!!

That touching story at the end .... I hope we get to see Smile smile when it's time for Peco vs. Smile.

But oh man this anime sure has touched me for a meager 11 episodes. Definitely the best of this season for me, along with Mushi-shi ofc, but you can't compare Mushi-shi with anything else..

Indeed, you can't be the best if you're only playing for your teammates. You need that extra passion you get by playing for yourself and your goals

yes it already went up 200 spots in the ranking with the last 2-3 episodes. Still it baffles me how this is on #540 and No Game No Life immediately went to top 50... so sad

Kazama isn't playing for himself or the team, they were both lies to please whoever asks him. "If that were true, I wouldn't have...[admired you]" It's admirable that Kazama goes to such lengths for the sake of restoring his father's good name, but it's sad all he gets in return is anxiety and unhappiness.

Peco and Smile definitely need to face each other : I know for certain this will be a splendid match.

I felt truly sorry for Akuma and Kazama this episode. The latter because he's playing for all the wrong reasons and completely disregards his own feelings and needs, and the former for realising that right after he quit playing.

There's no way now this show doesn't get a ten from me.

Nice to see that Kong is not bitter over his loss and can respect the skills of Peco.

I've gotta say I never really liked Peco because he always came off as a cocky brat to me but that has completely changed after hearing his monologue. It was just so emotional with the bgm and the little flashback scenes. I almost cried. He's truly like a hero, off to a huge battle even though he's injured for a friend.
