I HATED the fact that the group that accepted ruins(and even called devouring casshering a stupid thing to do) did it.
The fact that it was after he killed the robot which was stronger than them all was even more stupid.

personaly I thought it was great, any human would have done that. When faced with death you forget who your friends are and do what you need to survive.

I like that fact that because of the ruin the robots find their own mortality and stop behaving in a calm calculated manner and start behaving like desprite humans.

It's obvious the robots have become consumed by fear, rage, and desperation. The robots have become embodiment of what they hate most about humans.

What? I thought they acted possessed, not desperate. Sure it's plausible that someone would go against previous beliefs when confronted with the one thing that could save their life, but it was obvious he would be able to beat them, and between that and the glowy eyes, I vote that there's something controlling them.

Casshern too. Seems like he didn't want to kill them... why didn't he run when it became clear they were coming after him? He's more than fast enough.

Also, I don't think that they said they hated human.. what? Illogic, desperation, hypocrisy? Although maybe I missed it.

Anyway. I still liked this episode way better than the first... it raised the rating from 4 to 6. It would have been 7 if the episode had had a different ending.

Not as cute as the last episode. I would watch this if it was episodic. It would be a shame though if it was.

Ringo appears in the ED! She must be recurring character. ; __ ;

Absolutely brilliant episode. I never thought I'd like a series like this but obviously this is some sort of exception.

I was tearing up for Wrench having Root almost betray her after everything. Also the internal struggle between Casshern and his programming looks set to become very interesting. Makes me feel so sorry for him, knowing that he's caused the 'ruin' yet he has no recollection of why, when and how he did it. That must be such an awful feeling.

Everything perfekt for me so far, except the OP song. ;)

I love the sad and desperate atmosphere. Somehow it reminds me of shows like Trigun.

Its fascinating how the typical behavior of humans is reflected by robots facing mortality in this show.

Looking forward to the next episode.....

Oh yeah, this show has exactly the kind of bleak and melancholic feeling to it that I enjoy. I love shows with dark and heavy atmospheres, and so far this anime has had it in spades.

This was a very sad episode with Casshern very presence destroying the peace of this robot community. These robots could have fended off attacks of wild robots but the promise of immortality was their undoing. Casshern is a killing machine. As the only healthy robot, or whatever he is, he is able to easily take out hoards of these decaying machines with little effort. The fights are quick and brutal, while everyone is fighting a losing battle for survival Casshern seems to thrive. Well physically thrive because mentally he is a mess. He sanity seems to come lose at times as the perception of reality around him warps. His fragile mental condition is the result of his unremembered past and his current isolation.

So the ruin has taught robots about mortality which has caused some of them to appreciate the value of their existence and by extension made them more human because they now understand attachment to their peers. Or at least that's what happened in this one community of mostly humanoid robots. However, just like any mortal species they don't want to die. They were able to accept their fate when they had no choice but once hope was dangled before them they lost all dignity and humanity. It was such a sad sight to see such a peaceful community fall apart so quickly but that just proves that as much as they thought they could accept death, it just wasn't possible.

Of course real people can be the same way. When confronted with the cold reality of death, people can cling to even the craziest hopes instead of accepting the inevitable. Everything dies but still hard to accept one's own mortality.

Casshern's fate is a cruel one. He is bound to walk a lonely path as his mere presence will bring violence and destruction due the rumors surrounding. Of course we don't yet know his past so maybe he did something to deserve such a lonely path or maybe he has just been cursed. It certainly seems that there are plenty of forces that hate him and want to see him suffer. I do wonder if this is going to be mostly episodic with him finding different groups each week, something like Kino's Journey or if this is going to have a overarching plot. I think I'd be happy with an series that explored themes of humanity through different groups he meets with his past being the overarching thing that connects all the episodes.

Only 2 episodes in, and this show is like depressing as hell. Damn, this show is turning to be an instant favourite..
An utterly brilliant episode 2, shows both sides of the robot's psyche. You can't help but feel bad for Casshern, or infact anyone in the show in particular. Everyone wants to live, and hence has strong reasons for their actions. The soundtrack, yet again, is outstanding.

Jesus LORD. Now I see where TEXHNOLYZE got its inspiration from (if ever the original series had the same plot where everyone's a robot and there's nothing they can do about the ruin Casshern caused).

It's like Kino + Ergo + TEXHNOLYZE + Kaiba.

Funny how the robots keep dying and want to devour Casshern but all they find is an even earlier death/ruin.

That's what I thought too, it's sad, but faced with such a possibility for eternal life, it must seem like a small sacrifice. Though I doubt they were thinking at all at that point.

Despite being something deemed greater than humans, the robots here are doomed to repeat the same steps that probably led to the destruction of humanity: rampant, uncontrollable desire at the cost of each other's lives. Or, at least, that's what this episode seems to be egging at. It's a thinker actually, where we have robots that might as well be humans. They feel, think, and act just like any sentient being would, but they're just made of metal.

Is it because as the successors to humans, it was natural for robots to follow humanity's path of self-destruction? Is it because self-destruction is inherent in sentient life in general, with no fault lying with humans? Or is it because the writers for this show are humans, thus they can only think from the context of humans? The robots, whom might as well be a different species, don't act differently from people. I'm not sure if this is intentional or not, but it is an opportunity to dig into the show.

Also, geez this show gets morbid at times. All the talks about death and destruction really gets to you if you mull over it for too long.

A lot of interesting musings in this episode. The robots didn't start to appreciate life until they knew they would die, but death terrifies them. For one couple--Root and Wrench--that fear was quelled by love; for the others it was quelled by community. In the end, they were willing to abandon their "humanity" for a chance at immortality.

Heavy stuff.

I guess I am the only one who was bored of it all. The setting is already boring as it is, the directing didn't make it more tolerable, and the action sequence was boring. To make it worse, they are all robots..

It's the second episode, and it's the second episode where they had to repeat the same thing, that Casshern brought their world to ruin. There are new information that we got, but repeating the same thing over and over again is just meh, though it does depend on what sort of scene you're repeating.

Just for the record, I loved Texhnolyze, so it's not like it's boring because it's slow. I feel like they played too much into the grim atmosphere and kind of neglect the intrigue of it.

For now, this is a on-hold for me.

The only "asshole" thing any of them tried to do was cling to life, and try, with the very last that they had, to survive by taking down Casshern. Their fear of dying overwhelmed them to the point that they were blinded and basically, lost their fear of dying.

There are a lot of meaningful things to glean from this group and this part of the story. The story of Root and Wrench is probably one of the saddest of all those Casshern meets, particularly for Wrench.

The scene with the ruined and dying robots in the building really struck me as having a similar tone to a certain scene in Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, where Marlowe stumbles upon a patch of forest. The effect is naturally just as harrowing here

So he just went berserk and slaughtered even the robots who did not make a move against him (as shown with the Sensei guy), and was only stopped from killing Wrench, who was just sitting there crying, by the Friender doggy (who survived by a miracle). Dude just needs to rust and die himself.

Another great episode ! The pacing is quite slow, but it isn't bothering.
I really like the reflexion about death, how it can be what makes us feel alive, but also how terrifying it is.
I also like how the robots wanting to eat Casshern over a mere rumor are a great depiction to how humans behave when they are scared for their life.
Also, Casshern's definitely an interesting character. As he currently is, he doesn't all seem to be a bad person, but at the same time he is ready to savagely commit murder... It really makes me want to know his story.

Mmh, this will be a "road series" /wandering where each encounter with robos will teach the hero with no memory something ("human?")?
OK.

Tne animation clearly shows Yamaguchi's preference, notably in the action scenes.

the ruin forced the robots to appreciate the preciousness of life, realising that what made life precious to them was the ability for it to end. but then in an instant, faced with a chance for eternal life, they dropped this belief. as if it meant nothing to them.

it is said that the last 60 seconds of someone's life are their most truest. are individuals just like the robots, not really believing in what they say. food for thought.

The viewer -and Casshern- know that part of his memories are not just erased, but blocked (the hallucinations always meant that some part of his memory contained that recollection), and in this episode is where he really begins to look at both the consequences of having fulfilled his mission, and to notice in this episode one of the many attitudes of the robots upon realizing they are mortal, for the first time in their lives.

For now, two are known:

1) Robots that accept dying. In this case, in the ruins of a city, whose meeting point is the ruins of a church.
2) Robots that heard and believed the rumor (which is later confirmed) that if they ate Casshern, they would have eternal life.

It is interesting to note from the writers, the attribution of feelings of resignation and resistance to the mortal condition of the robots. Additionally, from the previous episode, we notice who are part of what was once Braiking Boss's army (who appears from an episode ahead), and those we could attribute to their creation both to humanity and to the iconic villain of the Casshern saga. Both that, and also noting the fact that the action of 'devouring Casshern' is curious in itself since there is a precedent in other media which, in turn, was taken from historical investigations of regions in deep Africa where anthropophagy, in those villages, ensured 'the immediate acquisition of the strength of soldiers from enemy villages, as well as an incentive to fear from other villages that learned what happened to a neighboring village.'

Here, to conclude, something more is added to the mystery of an amnesiac and immortal Casshern: The first appearance of Frienden, a cyborg-dog that seems to be made with the same science and technique with which they created Casshern, at least in the part of being immune to 'the ruin.'

Not to mention the girl who wants to kill him and the little girl with the technician who will encounter them throughout the series.

I'm saving myself for the mysteries.
