Both of these Anime have a dark, gothic feel to their art style and they are about the macbre death. They also touch on the supernatural, one about how supernaturalism isn't real, and the other based on the what if it was real.

Huey from Dantalian reminds me of a much older Oz Vessalius, while Dalian definitely reminds me of Alice. Both take place in a European setting, both are fantasy shows.

Cute little girl = magic book directory; she's in the care of a male who doesn't know much about 'that sort of thing' but accepts his new lifestyle. The above is the most importiant element of both series's, however the simalarities end there... Dantalian features the two amins traveling together, meeting unusual people and solving obscure mysteries. 'Index is an action series which features a case of familiar shounen character types.

Cute little bossy smart loli girl wrapped up in mysteries alongside a level headed, not-too-clued-up male (typcal tsundere victum) who has just stumbled into the situation and attained the status sidekick. Both girls appear to be gothic loli's.

Same thing with alternative setting. Same short mystery stories about mushi (spirits) instead of books. Also both series has no main plot.
report Recommended by iRayden
Both are in the same Era, and have two protagonists that make a contract with each other, one of them has supernatural powers and uses it to solve mysteries. Both give you a gothic feeling.

Both Anime deal with Demons. The main female characters have similar personalities, the story line is told in slice of life and there is a similar feel to the actual story line, not to mention the art style is similar.

Both Anime deal around the theme of books. Not just any kind of book, but books that are very important and may or may not have a special power, if created just right.
report Recommended by Yemi_Hikari
Books are a central part of both plots. The two anime share the same genres of mystery and historical. The only differences are the art style, time setting, and the main character's personality.

Both series' plot revolve around hunting down magical books/tomes to prevent harm from befalling those who come in contact with them.

Tsundere loli lead females, art shows resemblance as well. 4 biblio-princesses are very much like the seven Rozen Maidens

The mystery and supernatural elements are undeniably present in both series. But furthermore... The main character of the series solves mysteries with a supernatural partner on a daily basis. These mysteries also tie together and with the help of supernatural abilities. Both series offer something interesting to viewers in the mystery fiction department; supernatural element thrown in as a bonus

Both series are set between the wars, though Dantalian is set in Europe rather than the United States. The series are also both decidedly cerebral in style, though Baccano breaks up the piecing together of its mysteries with a lot of action and comedy while Dantalian has some light comic relief but tends to focus more on the mysteries. The art styles are rather similar as well.

both are mystery. sakurako's love for bones reminded me of dalian with her love for books and how both of those obsession's are a big part of the story. they both also have a male partner.
report Recommended by momosemomo
They are similar because they both have a picture of a guy standing over a girl sitting in a chair in a place that looks it could be a greenhouse of some kind with all the plants in the background; and pictures give a same strange feeling to them and yeah umm stuff and stuffy stuff.

Similarities: -Victorian Age/Fantasy -Dealing with abnormal spirits/monsters -Rich blond guy and dark haired partner by his side that helps protect him -Rich blond guy depends on partner throughout the story -Magic/Powers/Fighting -There is a character named Danitalian in both XD Differences: Devils and Realist: -Demons, Hell, and electing a substitute leader for Hell -Rich kid who's family has gone bankrupt -Surrounded by multiple friends/companions Danitalian -A really young looking girl who has magical capabilities of her own -Has a darker feeling, rather than Devil and Realist's upbeat and adventurous feeling -They act as detectives

Dark animes with books and mystery/supernatural involved. Both have contracts with demons.

These two series have more similar in atmosphere than in plot points. The easiest way to see this is to listen to their OST (take, for example, 'Blessing' from Kaminai and the OP of Dantalian). Both series are set in a serene, mystical fantasy world that is intriguing, and you'd wish they'd dedicated more episodes to fleshing out. Dantalian is set in the Victorian era with fantasy elements, whilst Kaminai is set in an alternate universe. Both feature the adventures of a young girl with her companion/s, and whilst at first it seems as though Dantalian is episodic, whilst Kaminai has an overarching plot,  read more

Both are centered around the significance of unique books as a means to gain potency and intellect. When it comes to the main characters, it is highlighted how being a bibliomaniac can contribute to solving cases involving strange books that were deemed rare and lost, or even containing special magical powers, unique to the grimoire in question. The illusionary realm of fantasy and reality is a strong concept supporting each respective titles, but saying anymore would spoil the experience.

As the first season of spice and wolf, this second one looks similar in more than one way with Dantalian no Shoka, a man meets a woman _someway special_ consumed by solitude for a long time and decides to travel with her for an ultimate goal , a merchant travels or a chase for strange books , both takes part in a great adventure involving intelligence, supernatural and fantasy ( well Spice & Wolf have more fantasy ), let's enjoy the two shows.

Similar type of pairing with a small emotional heroine, with mystical origins, and a male character that accepts devoting himself to the heroine.

If you like series set in a Victorian Gothic setting with a hint of mystery added to the plot then you will like both anime

Vibes of I world war in european setting, some unrealistic elements, ornamental aesthetics of female character.

Main characters meet mysterious bookkeepers who possess a powerful grimoire (with a similar name of their own) capable of aiding vampires in Vanitas no Carte's case, or could seal away similar powers of its own, such is the case in Dantalian no Shoka. Set in similar time periods with a steampunk feel, the main cast embarks on a journey solving anomalies that appear. Dalian and Vanitas are also very expressive yet troublesome, which allows them to compliment the main characters well. As a plus, both anime share great music which fits the atmosphere superbly.

They're both detectives set mostly in old Europe.

Both have a similar feel including a gothic lolita as well as stunning visuals. They both also have a historical setting. Paintings are the main attribute to Cossette no Shouzou whereas Dantalian no Shoka are books.

Rozen Maiden and Dantalian no Shoka have a lot in common, not only do they have the same Dark/Gothic Lolita style for the characters, but also the dark atmosphere that is set in these anime series are quite similar. Both series are thus very interesting and especially lovely if you like Dark/Gothic Lolita style and atmosphere.

The artwork and feel of both are very similar, while the stories are different both deal with the supernatural in similar ways. The pacing and character development are also very much alike.

Supernatural elements, major characters spend much of the show struggling to solve mysteries

Fantasy. And as I started watching to Dantalian, it remembered me of Demonbane, because both of them are involving the theme of grimories.

Dantalian' and FMA season one are actually quite similar when you read between the lines... Dantalian: - A blonde bishounen in the pre-technology age aquires basically access to a load of books, these books feature supernatural secrets; they're grimore's, which basically = alchemy - This guy's grandad was the collector of all those books - He is attacked by odd creatures, spawned threw 'alchemy' that can be destroyed using 'alchemy' - His mother died and his father seems to have dissapeared - A religious aspect plays out in the background FMA: - Blonde bishounen in a pre-technology era aquires research material via hard work, he wants to understand alchemy more - This boys dad  read more

Both focus on the power of art that was meant to be destroyed as a driving force to the story. (I use the term art loosely.) And both have at least a hint of magic behind them and a good bit of mysticism and mystery behind why certain events transpire.
report Recommended by Forganesolid
Both have a very similar feel to them in similar settings with somewhat similar and driven characters.

Both Anime feature a dark haired girl who "eats" books so to speak. Both deal with how books are created and what is important about life and what is happiness supposed to be.

Both of these anime feature the dark supernatural and have the gothic style to them.

Dantalian no Shoka and Natsume Yuujinchou can be described as supernatural series that use a mystery/monster of the week storyline format. Natsume Yuujinchou has a slice of life narrative whereas Dantalian no Shoka is a mystery anime. Huey and Dantalian have a similar dynamic as Natsume and Madara. However, Natsume Yuujinchou is a better anime than Dantalian given that Natsume has better character development and there are more seasons to develop supporting characters.

Two series involving paranormal investigation to prevent catastrophes from happening. The female characters are variations of tsundere so you might be looking forward to that. Both series use a case of the week formula, but Occult Academy has an overarching plotline whereas The Mystic Archives of Dantalian focuses on character growth. Ultimately, these series are easy to pick up and don't require too much thinking.
report Recommended by lancelot200
The two series feature on a male-female relationship in unusual circumstances. Dantalian and Yakumo both are heavy on the supernatural elements and do this in a sort of mystery of the week style.
report Recommended by ShadowBlazer3000
Both series have this calm, soothing atmosphere and take place in older Europe. There are many supernatural elements, including main heroines of both stories. Dantalian no Shoka is more action-packed with little horror here and there, while Spice and Wolf is actually calmer, with more focus on solving problems by persuading.

I cannot believe this hasn't been recommended before. - Both series seem to follow a kind of case-of-the-week pattern with a overall plot progression. - Gothic atmosphere. - Character designs are similar, especially with Huey and Abel. - Abel is to Trinity Blood what both Huey and Dalian are in Dantalian no Shoka. Detective role+supernatural power. But I believe Trinity Blood is inferior to Dantalian no Shoka when it comes to art, animation, music and characters too, I'd say. The higher production value of Dantalian is expected, it being produced 6 years after Trinity Blood. But that doesn't stop TB from giving a very similar vibe and delivering nice storylines. Eikoku Koi Monogatari Emma and Dantalian no Shoka have a very similar setting, especially to the point with that they have a very similar setting and atmosphere. The main difference with Eikoku Koi Monogatari Emma is that the focus of this series is more love oriented where Dantalian no Shoka is more focused on action and mystery.
report Recommended by RafaelDeJongh
These two series have quite the similar setting and atmosphere, however with Eikoku Koi Monogatari Emma: Molders-hen it is more focused around a love story compared to Dantalian no Shoka where it is more focused on action.

Ghost Hunt and Dantalian no Shoka are simple series involving paranormal investigations. Ghost Hunt has a more traditional approach to the paranormal with scary atmospheric ambiance. It avoids leaning on fantasy and broader supernatural elements. Dantalian no Shoka leans more on the supernatural and fantasy with mysteries based on an occult curses. Both series have an episodic storyline. You'll quickly know after watching one case if you like the series because they do not deviate from their formula.
