Since childhood, Elaina has always been fascinated by the stories written within her favorite book, especially those about Nike, a renowned witch who had numerous great travels across the world. Wanting to experience the awe of adventure herself, Elaina strives to become a witch, and despite the numerous trials that come her way, she eventually succeeds.

Now a full-fledged witch, Elaina finally embarks on her long-awaited journey, in which she meets many people along the way, learning their various stories. Through all of this, she explores the world at its fullest—experiencing both its bright and dark sides—starting her legendary tale.

Majo no Tabitabi or Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina, a spoiler free review for you!

A Magic, Fantasy, anime with it's story centered around various events happening during Elaina's journey. Being someone who had watched Frieren or other traveling type anime's before this I was somehow surprised by the similarities despite it having "Journey" in it's name a real dumb character moment I had there. That being said Majo no Tabitabi is far from the same show as Frieren or a simple "clone" as it would be called.

Majo no Tabitabi doesn't seem to have any major plot line or main story of any kind. Rather ... it has stories and various events happening during Elaina's travels to tell a story in it's own unique way. By doing so we're given a show with multiple somewhat separate stories that doesn't always build itself around the main character either. At times they can be be built around the people in the areas Elaina travels through with her having no involvement in said events almost as if nothing would be different had she not been there leaving a "traveler passing through" side to parts of the show. If you have watched Violet Evergarden this show uses a similar episode style of telling different stories each episode but with a lesser focus on the main character.

The main character Elaina could be described as partly having a self loving or narcissistic personality though it's very toned down compared to the usual kind seen in most anime. She's makes for a overall good main character, fulfilling her young dream to travel around the world, She's written fairly realistically and will keep out of things she doesn't want to be involved in a major "quirk" found on many main characters. There is at times an amount of "GL" or "Yuri" dialogue thrown in by some side characters. It isn't used too often and doesn't go anywhere into romance territory just ending up more as a comedy joke.

Every show has to have some kind of flaws come with it and this is no exception. By far the biggest issue with Majo no Tabitabi is also it's strong suit. The various stories told in this show literally vary quite a bit. Some of the better ones do a good job at telling a enjoyable story within the time frame of an episode or two while other's seem a bit bland with their writing or don't put enough story into the characters involved to really do their best. Perhaps a S2 of the sort could do better but who could say.

Animation and Art are both overall quite good, characters are drawn well and animated movements are done fairly well. Surprisingly this doesn't suffer too much from the lowered frame rate animation used quite often these days. Generally this is used to save cost by animating less frames. However many scenes are animated quite fully making for a much smoother watching experience.

Overall Majo no Tabitabi makes a great 12 episode short watch with some amount missed potential in a couple areas that isn't too big a problem. Ending my first review here giving this a 9/10 rounded from a 8.5/10 I may have given otherwise had MAL used a x.5 rating system.

Mixed Feelings

Overall, this is an okay episodical show about a witch on a journey who meets different people in different places. Most stories are rather forgettable, the standout stronger stories are surely EP 4 and EP 9. What makes this entertaining enough are the likable characters and the humour that isn't overbearing but simply accompanying the rest of the show. The high quality animation and soundtrack also bolster this show. Why is it still a mixed bag then? Because while it does nothing bad, it also does nothing exceptionally well. You can watch it and enjoy your time with it but it won't stick with you ... like really good shows usually do.

Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina, is the perfect anime if you want your blood to boil. Eleina is the absolute worst protagonist I’ve ever seen in any show. I do not mean to be harsh, but her character and what message this anime sends out triggered something in me.

All episodes follow 1 or 2 plotlines each, often with new characters. The plotlines often have something to do with each other. This is what, in my opinion, makes it easy to binge-watch for entertainment.

I usually enjoy these types of shows, but considering how triggering this series was, I just can’t give it any higher ... rating.

(Spoiler for episode 3):

In episode 3, we see 2 different stories. Assuming you've alreadu seen the episode, I'm not gonna go into detail, but both have a pretty infuriating end.

One of them revolves around some magically cursed flowers. My problem with it is that it ended with her leaving a dying boy without trying to help. I get that this is a ‘realistic thing to do’, but real people with human emotions are emotionally affected by things like this in the aftermath. Eleina shows no second thoughts, no empathy, no sign of care whatsoever. But it gets worse.

The other story shows a maid that has been bought as a slave, and is clearly being abused by her owner. This is a very strong theme to bring in to this kind of show, and if you do choose to have plot lines like this, you need to do it right. It is implied that this maid is likely going to end her own life at some point. Eleina is in a position where helping the girl would be very possible for her, but helping can be hard and her leaving is pretty realistic, yes. What is not realistic is her not showing any regret, nor sadness, nor anger, and it is never mentioned again after this episode.

Eleina is the definition of a bystander, and although episode 3 is definitely the worst one, she shows this side of herself throughout the whole show. Calling her a realistic character paints the picture that it is completely normal and okay to not care about anyone else than yourself, and not help anyone if it does not benefit you. This is a dangerous mindset, and I’m scared people on the younger end watching this ends up with the same thought process as shown in Eleina.
I enjoy the motive of not doing anything you don’t want to do, that’s a great motive. But this character simply does not care. She is sosiopathically coded, and completely ignorant.

In short, I would definitely stay away from this anime, and I would never ever show it to any children. This series romantizises narcissistic, greedy and careless personality traits, and I'm not here for it.

That being said, the art style is pretty amazing and aesthetically pleasing. The overall anime is boring and is good for nothing more than rage bait or background noise.
