SynopsisOn November 22, 2010 ten missiles strike Japan. However, this unprecedented terrorist act, later to be known as "Careless Monday," does not result in any apparent victims, and is soon forgotten by almost everyone. Then, 3 months later... Saki Morimi is a young woman currently in the United States of America on her graduation trip. But just when she is in front of the White House, Washington DC, she gets into trouble, and only the unexpected intervention of one of her fellow countrymen saves her. However, this man, who introduces himself as Akira Takizawa, is a complete mystery. He appears to have lost his memory, is stark naked, except for the gun he holds in one hand, and the mobile phone he's holding in the other. A phone that is charged with 8,200,000,000 yen in digital cash.

Higashi no Eden (or Eden of the East however you want to call it) is a new anime series produced by Production I.G, and it was one of the most anticipated series of the Spring 2009 season. After quite an impressive trailer before the anime aired, I just knew I had to watch this show which looked like it had a lot of promise. Did it live up to my expectation? Read ahead to find out.
Story:
+ This anime definitely brings a very interesting plot.
+ The level of mystery and suspense will leave the viewer wanting more every episode.
+ Definitely one of the most refreshing stories in recent seasons.
- Its is only 11 episodes long, a very uncommon number for an anime.
- The ending leaves you with a cliffhanger that the movies are expected to resolve.
- Because of the # of episodes, plus the announcement of 2 movies. The anime ending does not feel like it brings any closure to the overall story.
Art:
+ Fantastic art in both characters and backgrounds throughout the anime.
+ Very artistic animations for both the Opening and Ending themes.
+ There is really nothing bad to say here, this anime brings some nice eye candy to the viewer.
Sound:
+ Very good OP and ED songs. They are really cool to listen to.
+ The soundtrack is also really good, complimenting some scenes really nicely.
+ The voice acting is solid through the series, specially for Akira.
Character:
+ Takizawa Akira is main driving force in terms of character in this anime. He is pretty much the only one who constantly shines.
+ Other Selecao members are all unique and different in personalities, and are also very interesting people and have some good development (as short as some may be).
+ Akira is as mysterious as a character as he is likeable, he doesn't take things TOO seriously and also provides some good comedy.
- Saki, despite being likeable, just doesn't seem to contribute much to the overall plot despite being a main character.
Enjoyment: This anime was highly entertaining, despite ending in a cliffhanger it left me wanting more every episode and it would never feel boring. With the movies set to bring a conclusion to the anime, I can't wait to see them.
Overall Higashi no Eden proves to be a very enjoyable and entertaining anime which brings some rather unique and interesting plot that will be able to keep your interest from its unique 11 episode run. However because the series itself is not complete without the movies, the ending might feel a little underwhelming to some. Regardless, this anime surpassed my expectations and its a fantastic show to those looking a solid plot, likeable characters, beautiful visuals, and enjoyable music. I highly recommend people try this anime out, I dont think you will be disappointed. read more

Eden of the East, or Higashi no Eden, is one of the newest ventures of Production I.G, most notably accredited for producing such masterpiece series’ as Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Just like the majority of Production I.G’s other series’, Eden of the East does not disappoint, and its intriguing and unique blend of a gripping storyline and well built suspense which leaves the viewer clamouring for more at the end of every episode, cements its place as a well needed forerunner in the modern mystery/suspense genre.
The plotline is very interesting and is revealed at a well managed pace, and this pacing creates the many moments at the end of each episode which leave the viewer wanting more and more from the series. However, the ending is somewhat abrupt, and does not really provide any full closure to the series itself – but when it is factored in that the series’ ending is actually presented in two extra movies, this ‘ending’ can be forgiven for its somewhat sudden stopping point. The intricacies of the story and the unfolding of the plot are very complex and rewarding to the viewer when uncovered, most of the time giving new questions to the viewers with each revelation. The character development is also handled well – Akira Takizawa, being the main character, of course has the most detailed development of the characters, but it is arguable that his actions practically push the plot entirely throughout the series, and his endearing personality and the hook of the mysterious events surrounding his past make him into an incredible main protagonist. Being a source of many different film references that he mentions frequently throughout the series also gives him a sense of realism that not many other protagonists can match, allowing the viewer to further understand his character.
Compared to Akira Takizawa’s well developed personality, the female protagonist, Saki Morimi, does not match up as well. Granted, she does provide a plethora of interesting character interactions between her and Akira, along with her interactions with other characters. However, due to the progression of the plot, Saki, despite being a character that is likable due to her sudden involvement in Akira’s world, she doesn’t seem to do much at all to the plot itself, and it almost seems as if her entire characterisation results in her simply running around after Akira, rendering her character somewhat useless. Saki’s friends are also not particularly developed, but this is not required, as they only serve as another viewpoint to Akira’s and the other Selecao’s actions throughout the series, occasionally providing their own support and launching their own investigations into the actions of Akira, giving them a surprising amount of depth for side characters. The Selecao members themselves are almost as interesting as Akira himself as far as character development goes – it is clear that each Selecao is radically different from each other, and have their own motives for their participation, be them benign or malicious. In fact, even though several of the Selecao members do not appear for more than one or two episodes each, they are developed quite well, and provide a great contrast to the actions of Akira, serving as a good selection of what could loosely be referred to as ‘antagonists’, but the reality of the each Selecao member’s individual motives are much more complex.
The art direction of this series is extremely well done, with both the character designs and the backgrounds handled efficiently, creating a real sense of detail and distinctiveness throughout, applying especially to the characters – their designs fit their character personalities excellently overall. The animation for both the opening and ending sequences is also very unique and stylish, with special commendation going to the creation of the ending sequence, which must have used a lot of paper to produce. Even the segments in which there are CG, it tends to blend in with the backgrounds and the other elements of the environment so well that it is difficult to notice – a very commendable feat.
Audio in this series is also another element in which this series shines – the OP and ED themes are very fun to listen to, and also contribute well to the theme and progression of the series. The lyrics of the OP and ED themes, notably, are very relevant to the events of the series as well, specifically ‘Falling Down’ by Oasis. Even the background score is very well designed and fit very well to the situations in which the individual tracks are presented in. Voice acting is generally very well done, and the performances bring out the personalities of the characters, from the civilians to the Selecao, extremely well.
The series is very enjoyable to watch, and the ending begs for the viewer to watch the movies to close the curtains on the storyline once and for all, and that is something I almost certainly will be doing. My final rating of 9/10 sums up very well the incredible combination of fantastic, well paced and gripping storytelling, the detailed and unique artwork, the amazing soundtrack and the well developed characters throughout the series. The one point deducted can only be attributed to a perhaps weak offering in Saki’s characterisation and a fairly inconclusive ending, although the presence of the movies as a follow-up production practically invalidates the latter point. Anyone who is looking for the next great modern mystery and suspense series, you will do well to find better than this gem of an anime.

Indeed similar, while watching Mirai Nikki it brought me back the feeling i had when i used to watch Higashi no Eden.
Both series are action and mystery genres, as well both share an important point of the main line in the plot: a teenager (Akira for Higashi and Yukiteru for Mirai) received a "special phone" and has to somewhat change the world with it.
Akira has 10 billions of yen which he has to use to change Japan for good, as well Yukiteru has the diary of future which he needs to use in order to survive and become the new god of space and time.
Still, both characters, are introduced to play this "game" and have to pay attention to the other contestants who, of course, will try anything in their power to trouble them, or else worse, kill them; because everyone wants obviously win the game.
The strong action of both series will keep you very interested as to know what will come next, by each episode you'll watch.
If you liked one of those, it's highly probable that you will enjoy the other as well!
They're basically the same thing, except Mirai Nikki has phones that tell the future and Eden of the East has phones that give you mad stacks.

12 people with special cell phones compete in a survival game in Japan. One of the cell phone holders watches the other eleven. One of the main characters loses their memories early on. The winner of the survival game gets a position of power.
Summary: Both shows has one supreme guy eg. god, that creates a survival game for 12 players.
Unique: The game provides the players with a cellphone each that has some abnormal feature eg. one is money and the other is predicting the future.
Objective: Killing one another to obtain the title of the king, god w/e.

When I saw Mirai Nikki, I remembered immediately Higashi no Eden.
The fact that they use mobile phones as a way to change the future - in different ways and with ambitions a bit different, but still this way. - Got me interested in both stories.
A plot well done, many great works.
The use of cellphones in order to see the events of other peoples actions in Eden of the east there is basically one diary with all the events in it and its always being updated but in Mirai Nikki Each Diary is different and corresponds with that persons physical and mental conditions.

Both Higashi no Eden and Mirai Nikki have 12 individuals with phones (usually) that have something special about them. One major difference is Higashi's less supernatural and not a horror anime like Mirai Nikki. Also, it should be noted that Higashi ONLY has special phones involved, whereas the powers in Mirai Nikki don't necessarily require a phone...it just has to be some sort of diary (be that a phone, book, or what have you). Still, if you enjoyed the idea of 12 individuals getting thrown in a special (and oftentimes dangerous) situation against each other, or if you enjoyed one of these two, you'll probably like the other. Probably. :)

Both series, through the use of cell phones and knowledge, allow for a total of 12 individuals to compete in a survival game. In Mirai Nikki, the objective of the game is to destroy everyone else's diary, or simply kill them, until there is only one person left standing. This final person, by winning the game, is granted the title of god in the place of Deus ex Machina, who is on the verge of death. While, in Higashi no Eden, the objective of the game is for the participants to "save" Japan by using the 10 billion yen that is on their phone. Both series are great and will leave you in awe.

Both animes involve a game of life and death , with unknown opponents competing for a grand prize. Both also use phones(or in mirai nikki case phones or something similar) to help them in their task. Mirai Nikki contains fantasy elements, with gore. On the other hand eden of the east is more realistic, and is not as graphic. Both animes though are definetly worth a watch.
replace the "future diaries" with lots of moneys and take the crazy stalker out in Mirai Nikki and you get Higashi no Eden!

Both of them have this mysterious feel around the plot and characters working behind the scenes for a larger vision.
Similar art, both about searching and complicated feelings, a little bit tragic.
If you like a complex story with an ending that explains it all, you might like these anime's.
Both have similar atmosphere and style.
The shows have similar themes. Both have protagonists who are involved with questionable organizations and may have conflict with others who possess abilities like their own. They have a touch of sci-fi and take place mostly in urban areas. Darker than Black is more action-oriented. Both shows require the viewer to pay attention in order to keep up with the plot.
The main guys both have special powers. Higashi no Eden reminds me of Darker than BLACK...
Both of these take place in a strange version of Japan that's basically our own, but there's one big thing that affects the country - even the world - with the protagonists smack dab right in the middle of things.
Both have mystery, full of secrets plot, theme with with people who got phenomenal force.
for those people who watch dubbed anime, you will notice Takizawa and Hei are voice by the same person in the english version. Hei meets a girl name Suo and she follows hei and help him. in Higashi no eden Saki is the girl who follows Takky around. Also both shows are very realistic(as said in the Funimation Higashi no Eden staff commentary).
Both series have some strange happenings going on with a select group of people and a rather strange controlling organization that the main character challenges. Both series have conflict of good vs evil but also have some ambiguities to that problem and difficult choices. The main characters in both can act in different ways than what would be expected and can act in a self sacrificing heroic way. Both have a sci fi futuristic theme set in a not too distant future on earth. These series both have excellent animation art wise and complicated plots that make you think and keep you wondering.
Both of these animes have main characters who are voiced by the same person in the english dub. And they both have black hair and use cell phones a lot.
