SynopsisOn Christmas Eve, Hiro Hirono's bike is stolen by a girl chasing a thief who stole her purse. He gives chase and finds her unconscious and his bike ruined. The girl, Miyako Miyamura, soon awakes and the two begin to talk. After making sure she is okay, they end up spending Christmas Eve together. Later, Hiro finds out Miyako attends the same school as him and they begin to spend more and more time together, Miyako developing affections for Hiro. Kei Shindou -- Hiro's childhood friend who has long held a crush on him -- begins to become jealous and a love triangle follows.
The series also tells the story of Renji Asou. One day, he meets Chihiro Shindou, the twin sister of Kei Shindou, at an abandoned train station. Even though she's very shy, they get along pretty well and begin meeting at the same spot everyday. However, Renji finds out that Chihiro was in a car accident years ago and as a consequence she suffers from a disability: her memory lasts only 13 hours. Nevertheless, after learning that Chihiro's dream is to write a novel, Renji finally decides to help her fulfill her dream while also trying to make her overcome the difficulties imposed by her condition. |

Several love stories... they will make you cry. Definite recommendation.
Love. Tragedy. Sadness. And a happy ending. This show has all the basic ingredients that's needed to make me cry. . However, not all shows with those basic ingredients have done so. What made this show so special then?
I guess the characters, and the way they were portrayed. They were all struggling... struggling with their dreams. What to do. Who to be with. That was portrayed in such a way that I completely fell into it, with my entire mind. It was as if I was standing next to them, having to watch them struggle through their dreams and loves... forcing me to cry, both in the good and bad times they were experiencing. Also, the animation and the way the scenes were made was really beautiful and enjoyable. It was something I've never seen before, and normally I'd probably say that it was weird, I guess. But with this show... it just fit in so perfectly. The ending of this show was also something that was enjoyable. When I started watching the show, I'd never think about the ending it had, and I'd definitely not like the idea of such an ending. However, after having watched it, I msut say that it was indeed the perfect way to sum it all up. It couldn't have been done more beautifully, not the slightest inch better. Not at all.
This show is truly one of the best shows I've watched, and I think that anyone who enjoys a tear-jerking show will love this show. Fully and completely.

“Put your wishes into the memories you do not want to forget…”
Ef – a tale of memories is one of those anime that will probably stay in your memory and will be used as a standard to compare with other similar series in the future. Why in the future? Because the entire series is so beautifully made that there is only a very small handful of shows that are worth comparing it to at present time. In fact, as far as animation quality and technique are concerned Ef – a tale of memories is one of a kind and will most likely remain so for some time to come.
The unique animation style is first shown in the first OP. While colourful images and sceneries directly taken out from the anime itself often proved to be an effective foreshadowing device (and a good way to capture viewers attention), the exact opposite apparently also work! With a simple coloured background plus a bunch of text, and some occasional symbolic representation of certain character/event, the OP of Ef – a tale of memories can be quite addictive to watch. Aside from the OP, the anime itself is equally impressive (if not more impressive). Extremely high quality animation is just a standard for this show. What makes it truly unique are the camera angles used in difference scenes, or in some cases the very effective use of repetitive text on the screen. The former often give viewers a greater view of things and present some background of the setting, while the latter case, the simple words and phrases are enough to advance the plot and at the same time depicts the mental state of the characters.
Viewers will most likely find the beginning of Ef – a tale of memories hard to follow. This can be attributed to the introduction of most (if not all) of the primary casts in the first episode. However, it was necessary to introduce all the seemingly unrelated characters at once since the storyline focuses deeply on the various characters’ developments. It should also be pointed out that a few of the secondary characters will actually become the main characters of the sequel, Ef – a tale of melodies. Thus becoming familiar with the sideline characters now will serve as a good foundation for the sequel.
There are two parallel plots occurring simultaneously. The first involve a simple love triangle between a guy and two girls (somewhat similar to True Tears for those who have seen it), personally I did not find this plot particularly well written. However, the second plot is what makes Ef – a tale of memories shine like a bright star among numerous other anime of the same genre (it is also where the title of the anime came from!). The concept of the second story was designed to move ones’ heart. It was built around pity and sadness. It was written in a way such that viewers will unconsciously find the couple destined to be together, yet due to some circumstances, made it near impossible for them to stay together. Overall, the story and characters are there to evoke a mixed array of emotions from us, the viewers.
As previously mentioned, the entire show is beautifully executed. This includes the music as well. From the BGM in the prelude episode to the OP to the BGM throughout the series to the ending, they all fulfill their purpose very nicely and matches perfectly with the particularly scene at that particularly moment. Personally, it was the amazing OP (plus stunning animation from the OP) that caught my attention to this series. The music are largely composed by Tenmon who happened to be the music composer of other great shows such as 5 Centimeters per Second, Voices of a Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, et cetera.
Ef – a tale of memories is truly a great romance anime that all romance suckers should not miss. From unbelievably stunning animation to music to characters to story, there is hardly anything to complain about this show (aside from the lack of “big name” seiyu which some people care about). On the whole, Ef – a tale of memories is, without a doubt, one of the top romance anime of the decade. read more

At first glance ef-a Tale of Memories and Air do not seem to have much in common, the first being more focused on romance while the second deals primarily with tragedy and family ties, however these titles have a similar atmosphere to them. Both are character driven through and through, the interaction between the characters is what advances the plot. These anime are highly emotional in the way they approach human relationships, a stellar soundtrack and flawless animation make them akin in more ways than one. Especially relevant is the attention to detail in the several scenes that feature the sky that are simply gorgeous both in Air and in ef-a tale of memories.
This series reminded me a lot of AIR. The music, story line, animation style, etc. I definitely suggest this to all fans of AIR. You won't regret watching this.
Similar feel and drama/romance.
Fantasy, romance, and amazing artwork
They're both dramatic, yet cute. Amazing art and sound too.
both are sad, dramas and about friendship and the obstacles in their relationships.
First of all, similiar, beautiful art.
They both tell a little bit sad, psychological story about life, happiness and relationships. If you liked one than you will probably like the other.
Both of them are romance, drama and slice of life. Also both of them are very sad.
Romance
Slice of life
Both are good places to expel some tears for.
Both of these series contain romance, tragic, and is emotional on several levels.
Both series contain the style of dreams, memories, and deals with the theme of being alone but finding someone that cares about them. Needless to say, these two series contain a similar atmosphere.
Both series also contain a more mature story and has deep drama. Human relationship is explored in these two series that can give the viewers a better look at the mature side of anime in its state of being.
Ef is like a work of art. It has a beutiful plot, just like air. It connects the lives on others through spirit.

both have deep emotional arcs and meanings. both contains drama powerful stories to touch the heart. although clannad is more comedy-orientated whilst ef is more drama orientated, both have amazing artwork (though different in style), and BOTH ARE ABSOLUTELY EPIC AND TOTALLY WORTH WATCHING especially if you like drama/romances/slice of life/school stuff!!!!
Both are very sad beautiful and tear-jerking. Great storyline and character development is their feature in common.
I have to say, if you like the idea of a nice girl being helped by guy, then ef is another great one to watch. There are quite a few similar themes between both of them such as gaining the confidence to pursue a "dream" thanks to a great guy you randomly met. Though Clannad is more comedy oriented (Air is pretty funny too at times!), ef is more drama oriented.
They aired at the same time, so many people completely overlooked ef in favor of Clannad. However, they both are compelling tales of several characters and how their lives intertwine together in a small town.
really cute animes about love and friendship the characters hardships they must go through.
Both are great shows that NEED to be watched. Personally I liked Ef better but both are great animes.
Beautiful and sad shows.
Both are drama, romance and harem.
Both these dramas involve high-school romances, and feature a male protagonist who, though initially a delinquent, is spurred onto the right path through the influence and guidance of family and friends. Both are very character-driven, and while the characters in Clannad are more fleshed out than those in Ef, Ef is significantly more condensed and loaded. If you're up for an emotional rollercoaster with great artwork, music and characters, watch these.
Both shows have very moving moments and good romance themes.
Though Ef - aToM lays on the drama thicker than Clannad, both shows are school based romance stories. If you seek something cute, Ef may not be your thing, but if you're looking for a well-written and somewhat bittersweet drama, you may have found it here.
