Even if something has lost its purpose, the fact that it remains is a memory of a time when it had a reason to exist.
And what is the purpose of a girl who can't do anything right? Or a puppeteer who can't put on a good performance? Or a mother who can't take care of her child? In it's own special way, Air tries to give us some answers and show that indeed a memory of their purpose is better than nothing at all.
We follow a traveller named Yukito who decides to work in a small, quiet seaside town. There he meets the estranged Misuzu, a lonely girl with childish innocence that he eventually warms up to. But things are not all that quiet in the peaceful coastal village. There is a tale of a winged, cursed girl who soars through the ageless air; a girl who Yukito yearns to meet. And he learns through the course of the series, his real importance, the meaning of his meeting with Misuzu, and the truth behind the girl in the sky. Also, it seems that this legend has had a profound effect on three other girls Yukito encounters.
This anime has one storyline, a few arcs, and you can say that there is a subplot. The subplot provides related information for the mystery behind the winged girl and the reason why anything in the present occurs. That's pretty much a lot of story for a short series, but Air manages to direct each story, each arc, and each plot splendidly. There is enough mystery to leave you intrigued, enough emotional content to cause those tears to appear, and enough originality for you to really appreciate that watching this anime is an experience.
The art for Air is really good. Some may be turned off from the very nineties style is has: large eyes, shiny hair, cute faces. Others may love it. But the fact of the matter is, the anime uses its style rather well. The animation was absolutely superb. The art direction is magnificent. There are scenes that will cause you to hold your breath and appreciate the moment. From beautiful sunsets, to a mouth contorted in pain or even a scene of tragic violence, Air looks great.
For the sound, there are good OP and ED songs. The background music consists of a lot of melancholy piano and orchestrated versions of the theme songs. It does its duty and sets the atmosphere for the anime. When something is sad, you can bet that the score will sweep to suit, and stir your emotions.
Air has a great cast and an equally great supporting cast. Though we never see most of these people for too long (again, due to the length of the anime), it does still feel as though we have been given a moment with each in which we were allowed to know them. Yukito is a very good guy. He's fun, interesting and cares for people in a way you wouldn't think someone who appears to be a loner would.
Misuzu is arguably a good character as well. While some may think the quality of her characterisation fell flat as she is the typical "cute girl", she should not be pigeonholed as such. In fact, I find there is something quite admirable about her existence. She's not the smartest, or most fun, or most interesting. She's always been alone. She is for the most part, unloved by the world. And yet, she's one of the sweetest persons you'll ever encounter in anime. It makes watching her agony all the sadder to know that someone who deserves something better has been given dealt such an unfair hand.
Misuzu's guardian Haruko is such a wonder to look at as well. The most inappropriate maternal figure who ironically is the most appropriate mother for Misuzu. What you think of her definitely changes throughout the course of the anime. The supporting cast has roles that range from comical to tragic, and while they are on-screen, you can't help but care for them as well.
Now, how can I call one of the most depressing anime I've seen "entertainment"? For the sake of intrigue and for having me absorbed with every minute of this anime, I suppose that I can say that this anime is entertaining. The quality of timelessness is also felt in the pacing of the anime. It doesn't drag on--the series is far too short for that to happen. But there is the feeling that every moment is precious, every scene has its importance, every minuscule, irrelevant detail does indeed have some relevance to the wider picture. But a word of warning: if you're any bit sensitive, you might end up crying a few times during the course of Air. I cannot think of one story arc that hasn't packed an emotional punch.
The themes alone are wonderfully crafted. When have you seen an anime that deals with every aspect of love so intricately? The love of a parent for their child, love between two friends, sibling love, and the love from one human being to another. Also, I think this is truly one of the first anime I've seen where parenthood and family has played such an important role. And there are the sadder themes, such as loneliness, which are portrayed through many images and characters. What is that mythic lone girl in the infinite sky? What are the dinosaurs other than creatures who have lived, died and disappeared? What is a man who is forced to stop by something greater than his own self? Magnificent questions are asked that we have to work out on our own; this anime is great food for thought.
I think people will learn to love the quality of living a little more after seeing this.
Air is truly a breath full of life and a sigh full of sadness. It shouldn't be missed. read more

Air
~ The 1000th Summer...~
Story (9/10)
Air the story of Yukito Kunisaki, a young man carrying on his family's journey to find the "girl in the sky" and free her from a curse. Stumbling upon a sleepy coastal town, he meets three girls: Misuzu Kamio, Kana Kirishima, and Minagi Tohno. He comes to spend more and more time in the town, living at the Kamio residence with Misuzu and her adopted mother.
Some may know, others may not, but Air is based off an ero visual novel by KEY. Thus, each of the main heroines (Misuzu, Kana, and Minagi) each have different scenarios to explore. The short anime tries its best to explore each scenario, but since it was so short, it felt somewhat rushed and the arcs of Kana and Minagi felt somewhat detached. Thus why the story only gets a 9/10.
However, I still rated it so high because the main story (the one of Misuzu) is simply beautiful. It's original, fresh, tear-jerking, and just beautifully done. I'll admit it, I cried at at the end.
Most consider Air to be confusing when they watch and don't understand the Kanna arc. I myself got it the first time, but if you don't, just watch it over -- you won't regret it. Most understand it the second time and come to appreciate the series much more.
Art (10/10)
Kyoto Animation, the company that animated Air, did a stunning job as always. The scenery felt alive like I could just step in, everything flowed smoothly and they're weren't any inconsistencies. Air is set in the summer, and like to watch parts of it in winter when I feel cold -- that's how real it feels. The clouds and skies in particular were stunning, and kudos to them for that, since the sky and flying are important symbols of Air.
Sound (9/10)
I love, love, love the opening theme to Air ("Tori no Uta" [The Bird's Song] by Lia). It's beautiful and the mood and lyrics reflects all the emotions and events in the series. The ending theme ("Farewell Song" also done by Lia) as well complimented the story and plot wonderfully. The BGM was nicely done, giving off the perfect aura for whatever was going on when it was played. Kudos to the voice actors, also -- they did terrific work on their roles. The character's emotions were conveyed convincingly and they spoke with such emotion it could tear your heart out.
Character (8/10)
The characters in Air were all alive and I felt for each and every one's issues. The designs on them were varied and I never was annoyed by any character in particular (a nice change for once). However, the reason this rating isn't higher, is because since the anime was so short most characters did not receive the development they were in need of.
Final Thoughts
I gave Air an "enjoyment" rating of 10. I don't let this affect my score, however, since it's really a personal thing -- someone who isn't a romance, drama, supernatural sort of thing probably won't like this. However, I loved Air every moment, from beginning to end. If you're looking for a nice romance with a touch of supernatural fantasy and great characters, I highly recommend Air. read more

Same people made it both stories are in the slice of life, fantasy genre.
Do I need to say anythign at all? Kawaii girls that you can choose from! imo kanon is better cuz it has more kawaii girls.
also done by Kyoto Animation, and produced by Visual Art's/Key. Looking for sad stories like in Air? Kanon is your answer, but twice as long and just as good.
Both stories are quite touching and deep and both are created by the same company.
Both series pictures the lives of a main person (Yuuichi/Yukito). They both meet a girl (Ayu/Misuzu) who is a little childish, and becomes very close to the main character. Both will make you cry after a few episodes, as they both turn and twist the story all around.
Besides being made by the same creator, both these series are sweet and sentimental. Best suited if you're looking to shed a tear or two.
One guy and a lot of different girls with there own beautiful arcs. Both have supernatural elements and are animated by the same studio, Kyoto Animation.
Fantasy and Romance with bits of Comedy thrown in
KyoAni does sad girls with sad stories yet again, but this time with an easier to understand plot.
Air was really similar to Kanon in the style and presentation but really takes a more emotional route and was def an anime to watch.
Both are very sad. Funny at other times.
Both are based on Visual Novels done by KEY. The story contains that Air feel about it, but it's still got it's own vibe throughout the series.
Both have the same atmosphere. They both basicly tell the story about a guy whho comes to a town and helps the sad girls in it...
Both series are based off games from the company Key for starters. The first plot of Kanon (with Makoto) is extremely similar to Air's story, except of course not exactly the same.
Both are made by the same group - Key and Kyoto Animation. Both have similar (yet different) and sad plots involving a main character and several girls.
Well first off, they're both originated from Key games and animated by Kyoani.
They're both incredibly sad story's which will tug at your heart, mind you with fabulous animation (kyoani ftw!)
One guy... A bunch of girl's...
Both titles being games produced by Key and both Animated by the wonderful KyoAni, both shows are beautiful to look at, and they both feature very sad stories. Keep your eyes open during ep 2 you might get a pleasant surprise lol
its made by the same people, and has the same sort of effect-like you could go back and watch it hundreds of times.
It's similar to air in case of the drama intensity. However, Air lacks the longevity of the story, but it's a pretty good one too. Kanon is great because of the unpredictable flow of the story. These two will surely bring tears to your eyes.
Boths series have lot in common. They are both KyoAni products and both have wonderfukl stories that will move your heart. They are Both harem shows with character arcs, and some of the character arcs in Kanon and Air resemble each other. IN other words, if you liked AIR you're definetly going to like Kanon.
Both are very sad. And they can be really funny, you can cry. x3
Same original visual novel studio (key), same animation studio (Kyoani)
Both Drama series from Kyoto Animation. If you watched Air (/Kanon (2006) then you should check the other one. They both include good Character developing, an emotional story through the Animé and great graphics and soundtracks fitting the whole atmosphere. Mixed with some Humor makes Kanon (2006) an overall great Animé which is definatly worth watching!
I really enjoyed Air but I enjoyed Kanon (2006) even more! Kyoto Animation works its magic in both of these romance / drama anime. Air and Kanon were both written by Key, and were video games before anime. They both have really intriguing plots and the animation is amazing and close to flawless! I was brought to tears by both of these shows. There are really moving scenes, and also scenes where you find yourself smiling from ear to ear! I strongly recommend Kanon (2006) if you liked Air!
Air is the first of the Key/Kyoto series followed by Kanon 2006
Besides the obvious reason of both of them being made by the same company, Air and Kanon both seem to be domant in a season and center in a season. Air capture the soul of Summer as Kanon gets the essence of winter. Both have a still , silent vibe. Both are awesome!
Same creators, and it's good o:
Similar character developments and story.
-About the same animation style
-A little bit of harem
-Made by Key Animation
-Comedy
Viewers that are teary-eyed on the sad moments from Air should certainly check out Kanon(2006). Kanon presents a simple but unpredictable storyline and captivating animation provided by the famous Kyoto Animation Studios. Be ready with those tissues though.
The same creators are responsible for Air and Kanon and it shows: from the character design to the pacing and plot, these are indeed akin titles that should appeal to a similar fanbase. Both are heartfelt anime that compel the viewer to empathize with he characters. However, Air takes drama to a whole different level and becomes downward tragic while Kanon manages to retain a bitter sweet feeling.
Both were adapted from visual novels by Key and animated by the same studio - Kyoto Animation.
They are very similar in several ways, both very tragic animes.
Kanon and Air are both adapted from visual novels by Key.
Both anime have the same type of supernatural elements and the moods of both stories are bittersweet. Anybody who enjoys one of these will definitely like the other.
The've Got The Same Producers And They've Both Got Beautifull Drama Stories
I'll try to keep this short. A lot of people have been suggesting things like kanon, or sola, or whatever for air, because they're both "sad". let me tell you that I don't get why that is. Kanon is nowhere NEAR Air's level. Air is spectacular. Why? Well, because, it doesn't just deal with the usual "tragedy" - the whole doomed love thing. Air goes so much deeper than that - not only does it explore one (make that two >.<'') of the purest couples I've ever seen before, it also goes into the love of sisters, and a mother and her daughter, and more. If you've watched Kanon, watch air right this second. It is WORTH it. If you've watched Air and you know what real tragedy is, I guess Kanon would be a good next stop. It's not as sad, but the animation is really similar, as is the way they lay out the story.
:)
A one guy and a lot of girls, each one with its own drama and a beautiful background story. A serie that will make you cry and smile with the characters.
Air and Kanon are very similair. they are both made by kyoani
the first arc in kanon 2006 is very similar to air tv. the following arcs also carry a resemlance and even take it that tiny bit further
both are very sad but beatiful
if you like air you will def like kanon and vice versa
they both have beautiful endings
Both are made by Key, and adapted by KyoAni. Both have a tragic feel to them, and they follow the "girl arc" formula with a boy coming to a town, meeting girls and their individual tragedies and troubles, each story arc focusing on one girl.
both are sad and have good animation.both are harem animes by key based off their games.
Sad girls that seem happy, a sad town that seems happy and a sad, sad, sad story that seems happy. Also, Kanon is based around winter while Air is based around summer.
Air and Kanon 2006 are both based off of visual novels by Key, and each have very moving stories that will probably make you cry. Also, the Makoto and Misuzu arcs are incredibly similar.
Its the same story, all over again
Possui um estilo bem parecido tanto no desenho como na historia ^^

Both sad and touching.I love Clannad more than Air though.
Yeah I would recommend Air if you like this anime :D
I finished Air not too long ago and loved it!
Made by the same people :P
One guy... A bunch of girl's...
Same original visual novel studio (key), same animation studio (Kyoani)
AIR, KANON, CLANNAD are made by KEY. All three are very good
Cute Anime from Key Studio..
Air and Clannad are similar in that they are both produced by the same group, and they have similar themes of drama, sadness, and fantasy. If you liked Air, then you will like Clannad, and vice versa.
It is made from the same people, and they are similar ind that the genre is the same.
Same creator, and similar story.
-About the same animation style
-A little bit of harem
-Made by Key Animation
-Comedy
Kyoto Animation also made an adaptation of the Clannad visual novel made by Visual arts/Key.
Both were adapted from visual novels by Key and animated by the same studio - Kyoto Animation.
Both are pretty slow-moving and capture the spirit of summer. In both, a male character helps out a female character who is weak.
Similar feel and drama/romance.
Both anime focus on a guy that doesn't know what to do with himself, and instead starts to help a girl fufilling her dreams. Also, the animations are quite alike, as they're both based on a visual novel by Key.
It's also from KEY and animated by KYOani
Clannad and Air are definitely the one of the best slice of life anime you will ever witness from the screen of your monitor. A box is tissues are needed for both shows ;)
Both anime made the same creators and atmosphere is the same. Both stories are about young male character, who helps weak girl making her dreams to come true.
Both were about slice of life, school life, comedy and else.
Both are made by Key, and both are very sad at times. Very good anime
AIR and Clannad founded both visual novel games. Both is very sad, but they've their funny moments too. Charachter are most of girls and actually only main character is boy.. ^^
They are both about the past and about characters who are a lot the same. People hiding their past and trying to make friends.
Though AIR is more of a tear jerker than Clannad, they have similar mix of drama, romance and comedy.
Created by the same animation studio and has the same type of storyline and same style
Where Clannad is (in my opinion) the better of the two both shows have a similar feel to them and the lead characters are very similar to one another.
Apart of having been created by the same studio, they both focus on "family", and how important this family is throughout your life.
They are both by the same company so they are to have many similarites they both have romance that sways off from time to time and girls who all seem to have some sort of relationship with the main character who ends up falling in love with one of them there other similarities now go find out for yourself :)
They are made from the same company. And they have same styles
same company, supernatural aspects and kind of haremy with a main boy and tons of moe girls ^^
A love story between daughter and mother brought to a tear jerking end in this fantastic series
