Question is in the title, but to answer it myself: As I've watched more anime, I've noticed that my favourite characters list has become quite the sausage fest. I only have one female character in there. I started off with more of a gender mix but the females have slowly been swapped out. I've noticed a lot of people seem to have one gender much more prominently than another.

The type of characters I tend to like are usually male (obvs) and often fit certain archetypes (I'm including characters that used to be in my faves):
  1. The Blushing Tsundere - A grumpy male lead that often can't confess his love and blushes a lot
    InuYasha, Syaoran Li, Kyou Souma

  2. The Dashing, Chivalrous Jock - An athletic, hot guy who saves the day
Lancer (Fate/Zero), Archer, InuYasha, Lancer (Fate/Stay Night: UBW)

  3. The Precious Cinnamon Bun - An adorable guy that is so damn cute you just want to protect from the world.
Takashi Natsume, Nishikata, Nakamura, Shinji Ikari

  4. The Cheeky Chap - A laidback joker or mischievous guy who's fun and maybe a bit naughty
Koyomi Ararararargi, Wei Wuxian, Houtarou Oreki (ish)

  5. The Feisty Female - A confident, strong-willed female who's usually either a bit bitchy or psycho
    Nanami Kiryuu, Senjougahara Hitagi
That's what I seem to be drawn to character-wise. I'm definitely biased towards male characters (probably in most cases because I think they're attractive) since the only female to make the cut for my favourites list is Nanami, which is odd to me because when it comes to live-action 99 times out of 100 - I prefer a female lead/female driven show. In fact, now I think about it, most of my favourite western TV characters are female? Weird, I've no idea why. Is anyone else the same?

What types of character tend to be your favourites? Any archetypes you usually go for?

It really depends if I get attached to the character, but certain archetypes speaking, probably the cheeky chap, I'm a sucker for characters like araragi and hachiman.

There's one main requirement for me and the few pseudo requirements are just based on my own discretion but that one sole factor I'm talking about is: "A tragic background or have met some heavy misfortunes along the way".

I don't have any particular male personalities that I lean towards. The male protagonists that have been in my favorites as of lately are the modest types or the goal-driven types. As far as female characters go, I typically like female characters that are cute but bashful.

-Characters who seem tough at first but are very gentle and sensitive on the inside
-Funny, quirky characters with a much more serious, darker side
-Unpreadictable characters who can come off as almost crazy but actually perfectly know what they're doing
-Characters very difficult to understand until their past is revealed
-Morally ambiguous characters with good (not necessarily sympathetic) reasons to be like that
-Sympathetic villains/antagonists
-Tsunderes when they are well developed

Overall characters that turn out to be more than meets the eye and are well developed, with a memorable personality and who, despite their sometimes over-the-top behavior, turn out to be very humans, flawed, but humans.
There is more, like for exemple dorky and endearing characters or characters who considerably evolve in a believable way, but those are the tropes that are the most likely to make me fall in love with a character.

Ok,i can kind of see a pattern in the types of characters I like.
If it's a fav characters then it's definitely going to be male, you could argue that the only female i have on my list(Tomoko) even acts kind of tomboyish herself.

1.The nice wholesome character that means no harm-I love genuinely good natured characters.

2.Stoic guy with a heart of gold(Even better if they started off as villains)-I kind of have a soft spot for character redemption arcs.

3.Plain relatability

I think for females i just want them to be funny and entertaining to watch.I tend to really like the otaku female/crazy fujioshi archetype because they are relatable.

I have mostly male characters as favorites and the types can be quite varied, but mainly those that have some sort of tragic past and/or are sassy, cool and badass.
For females, I like them to be strong and confident, also kind of crazy is a bonus.

For males I love the egotistical ones with superiority complexes like Neito Monoma or the jokers with slightly perverted humor such as Hanako-kun and for females I usually like the silent lolis like Shiro

Also I'm in love with pretty blondes and glasses like almost all the anime waifus and husbandos I'm in love with are blonde and/or have glasses

I totally forgot about this but I also love the ones with 8th grader syndrome aka Chuunibyou

I can't limit myself to one type alone, because they are all quite different from each other. I really like a lot of characters, but only have a bunch of real favorites, and I like a lot of character types, if they have very likeable sides, are understandable and aren't total edgelords or anything like that.

But mostly, I guess:

- Characters with different sides to them, goes either way:
Either they are quriky and funny, but show in other scenes that they are having a lot of depth and are actually smarter than you would think etc.
Or those, who appear as a bit cold, but actually aren't. It depends on how they are written.

- In general: these, who care a lot about other people in general. I hate in real life and I hate in characters, when people go: Me, me, it's about ME.

- Characters with an interesting motivation, when I could understand how things developed like that. Also such characters with an interesting development.

- Characters with a lot of integrity, a working conscience and just well... all in all good and likeable people, I guess? There are way too many to count them here, I'm lazy.

I'm quite tired of mostly western view of "everyone and everything is grey and grey", but what they mean is in this series: almost everyone is an asshole. And then you are left with only a bunch of characters in a big cast you could actually LIKE and not only find "okay, I understand that psychologically", GoT stuff and all.
And don't come to me with psychos or anything lol

No really, I'm not childishly oversensitive with "OwO that was sooo mean of them, now I hate them!!1", but you know, depends on the situation and what they do and all.

- Sometimes I do like characters that I don't like as a person and wouldn't want to meet and being friends with at all, but who are interesting as characters anyway.
But my favorite characters and extended favorite characters are mostly, but not only, these where I could imagine that I really would like as real people as well. But I start then to have at least sympathy in some ways for them. Mostly villains, but also some others.

- That kind of "strong women", who are actually very good characters and get a lot of development and strength, and have great relationships with male and female characters, but aren't that "strong, independent women who need no man (tm)"-cliches who are eyerolling and just extremely annoying or boring.

- Characters, who tease others a little bit (but don't go overboard, but still sassy and smuggy little shits) Sass and maybe some other good humor in general is always good, I guess. xD

- I guess characters, who have to deal with responsibilities and maybe also have some leadership qualities and also can stand up for themselves or others.

There are also some different appearance types I'm into, female and male characters. Character designs are pretty important to me as well.

I wouldn't say I tend to like certain "types" but you can definitely find some similarities. Used to be only sausage fest until I managed to put in some females as well. As for my types:

1.Blond guys - it's either because of their charm, personality, funniness or both. I tend to love blondes the most.

2. Crazy guys - I just love twisted or crazy personalities. It's just... fascinating.

3. Guys I can relate to - Some of my favorite male characters are ones I can relate to in some aspect. I usually like their appearance as well but their personality is what attracts me the most.

4. Determinated and intelligent female protagonist - This goes mostly for romcom girl MCs. I don't like timid MCs. Let them be feisty! Clash with their potentional crush is hilarious (aka Tamaki and Misaki from Maid-sama).

They tend to be female, and also tend to be introverted/quiet but serious/focused, and/or decisive and charismatic. This often, but not always, means somewhat older, more mature characters.
