Forum topics have gotten some small appearance updates today, including a new function to easily quote other posts. If you highlight the sentence you want to respond to, a tool will appear which lets you quote just that section of the post. Give it a try!

This may seem like a random update, but it's in preparation for the upcoming Threaded view for forum topics. Soon, you will be able to choose if you would like to view threads in Classic view (as it is now), or Threaded view (reply chains like you see on Reddit or Facebook). To support both views, some appearance changes needed to be made to Classic view, and we needed an alternative method to quote posts which would be compatible with both views.

Released today:
✅ Appearance changes to match upcoming Threaded view (Desktop/PC only)
✅ Highlight quote function (Desktop and Mobile)
Up next:
🔜 Quote button replaced with Reply button on Classic view (Desktop only)
🔜 Threaded view released (Desktop only)
Following releases:
🔜 Classic view appearance updates (Mobile)
    🔜 Threaded view (Mobile)
    🔜 Threaded view (App)

Why Threaded View?
Most modern group messaging platforms support some kind of threading in replies and this style of posting is more natural for members accustomed to these platforms. Threading replies allows for multiple conversations to happen within one forum topic without disrupting the others, and makes it easier to ignore conversations you don't want to see. For example, if you ignore one member on the forum now, you will still see all the replies to that member. With threaded view, the full conversation would be hidden.

On release, we will only support 1 level of threading (e.g. one parent with all children in chronological order). As more members transition to using Threaded view, we can consider whether more levels are necessary or not.

We hope you'll look forward to the upcoming releases!

Thi is actually something praiseworthy on itself and should be a thing in every single update that isn't a complete overhaul of the website, and I also quoted this using this new feature, thanks for making this easier

Finally, a super useful tool for the forums, no more having to remove 90% of a chain quote to reply to a specific sentence

It's not mentioned in this post, but you can cancel your vote in polls now. I run a club where we vote on polls, so I wonder how this will affect it.

Ooo that’s a really nice change. I also love that the reply button on the top of the page has been changed to a quick-reply box. The report thread button up top is also a great change ^.^

I think this is a positive change regardless, because locking someone into one decision forever isn't right, a poll on a forum isn't something important enough to have to "choose wisely" so to say, people should have the option to go back and change it to something else if they want.

I'd like a button to preview posts. It seems like there's no way to do so anymore. It's not a big deal, but it was useful for double-checking BBCode before posting.

Overall good update, though.

Edit: So if I post first, then click "Edit" I can go to the post screen where there's a preview button. But there doesn't seem to be a way to get to this screen before posting like there used to be.

I think it's a good change overall. I think it would be interesting for my club specifically because the poll choices affect what happens in the club. The ability to "change your mind" can add a whole different dimension to people's behavior.
Also, one flaw I found with the poll thing is that I can't copy and paste the results of a poll as easily anymore. The option I picked won't be copied, and if I paste it into a spreadsheet, everything goes in one column. It used to go in different columns. Here are some picture to help you see:

Looks good so far. Super minor issue but it does bug me a little that after clicking quick reply, it doesn't show your avatar, posts and forum title right away lol.

But it is a good step forward

I just noticed this right now; the highlight quoting seems to work weird with images and spoilers. Also, I can't CRTL+Z the highlight quotes or normal quotes. (Honestly, I'm not sure if that's new.) Also, if you close and reopen the new reply thing, your old message is gone. Same if you reload the page. I think that is new.
I don't want to be a debbie downer or anything. Just want to point out the changes I see.

It might only work for a limited amount of time similar to how you were limited when deleting threads. When I tried locking one of my old threads it didn’t let me.

THANK YOU 😭

Giving us the option to continue using the "classic" view is more than I could ever ask for. Also quoting by highlighting is seriously one of the best features ever.

Will there be an option to disable this feature? I like to highlight text as I read for my own comfort, and having the quote tool pop up all the time can get obnoxious.

Same! I always highlight text while I read too. I'd appreciate if the Quote button on the right changes to "quote the highlighted text" so as to not have that in the way. Otherwise, it's a good update.

Good update, overall. Shame the BBC Codes scripts are broken, hopefully script writers update them soon.

Also it seems only quick replies exist now? Not normal post replies with preview settings? As well as Forum Pic/Sig not showing up unless refreshing.

Much prefer the 1 level of threading, like YouTube, than any of those multi-threading platforms to be honest. Discord even introduced threading and nobody uses them. I'm interested to see how many people use classic vs threaded.

The good :
- I see that finally we can no longer report our own posts
- Great job in making it easier to make a thread sticky
- Deleted in red, excellent bwahahaha

The bad :
- Why remove the option of going to a new window before posting? That allowed us to preview our post before sharing it/making it public. Now we are forced to just post and edit afterwards.

- I don't like how the voting graphic was updated. The other one was more compact/simpler and nicer to look at. (I guess it's good that now we are finally able to change our votes)

As for the classic vs the new view, I'm guessing we might see another mass complaint campaign like when the profiles were updated lol

Random : why are we no longer able to select the "joined" and "posts" text under the forum avatars?

Anybody that does would be hilariously trite, considering classic will still be there. I can't wait.

I just realized that this feature is still there for "Edit" and not "Quick Edit" after you make a post. Yet all we get for forum posts are quick replies.

It's what appears on any thread that has a poll. The most used would be on episode discussion threads.
For example, here https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1981722 (before the first post ; you can see it after voting or by pressing "view results")

Yeah, dark mode is broken. Both extensions "Stylish" and "Myanimelist redesigned" dark modes don't work with the update.
The only thing working right now is "Dark Reader", but I hate that extension.
