Like, how have you seen hundreds of anime, days on days on days worth, and all you can say is that its been "on average pretty meh". HUH? The websites scoring system obviously has 5 as average, and anything below that is considered bad. Why would these people put so much time into anime if they just view most of it as bad? Are they torturing themselves? Or just attention baiting

I dont get it, much confused o_O

I've learned to just look the other way, cause they ain't for me, and I ain't for them. The Mal rating system is already messed up, nothing we can really do about it. And if they want to be an elitist to make themselves feel special, go for it.

The rating system is completely fine.

Also, it's because most things aren't going to be great.

Lmao, you have like 100+ anime in your completed list just wait till you complete around 300+ anime and your rating will eventually fall as you will see the flaws and similarities too much. It happens with everyone, i also had 7+ mean when i completed around 100+ anime.

We literally just got one of these threads, all you had to do was go to the search bar and search for "average" and you would have found so many threads about this.

It's not for you to understand how other people spend their time. Also, if you really, genuinely want to know, phrase your question better rather than framing it so that the people who are doing this are the weird ones when in reality you're questioning why people spend their free time on a hobby differently, unless anime is part of your job how you watch anime is just as meaningless. Just because it doesn't make sense to you doesn't mean it doesn't make sense.

Haven't we had enough of such thread. Literally same kind of thread criticizing low average score people was made recently. Angered with that thread another user made a thread criticizing high scored users. And now we have again this.

Its all the same, some express their joy and some express their hatred strikingly. In the end, everyone has anime they love and anime they hate. How people want to score in their list is their business.

Nah. Regardless of scoring, if they're watching anime at all, then they're getting something out of it - or at the very least trying to.

For users with 5.00+, I kinda understand them, since I have a mean score of 5.83, but for 4.99 and below, well... not really.

At least let me clarify how most (probably) people with a 5.00~5.99 mean score give the scores.

First off, they use the full 1-to-10 scale. Using a full scale is very useful in ranking and grouping shows based on how much you like them, it tells more than using just 5-10 or even 7-10.

Second, people have different scoring systems. Some may score based on every aspect of the show, while some just overlook flaws and logic and score them based on their enjoyment. For example, your "meh" may be 5 or 6, but my "meh" is 4.

Third, this, a very accurate answer.

When you've experienced many anime you tend to see flaws, copouts and different things that makes an anime mediocre. Also, if you watch seasonals, you will watch many bad and mediocre shows.

A sidenote: I actually wonder why people that have 250+ anime watched have a mean score of 8 and above. They give everything a 10... That's weird to me.

Some people believe in rating objectively which I really don't understand. Your scores are at your own disposal to use. So why would you rate out of convenience for others? There's no guarantee that the person is actually going to agree with your score. I'm going to give high scores to shows that I think deserve it and those to ones that I genuinely don't like. Not everyone's going to follow their idea of what objective is and give shows the ratings that they think they deserve.

I mean first off just because they do give it a bad score doesn't mean that they spend a lot of time dedicated to anime second off its just preference and opinion for example some people don't even follow mals rating system and include that in their bio specifically stating the way that they have rated the anime, lastly I would say that after u've reached a certain extent of watching anime you'll end up liking something less more easily because it just feels generic and unoriginal. This is my verdict on the topic feel free to reply :)

I wonder how much money they make in a year
I wonder about their sexual life
I wonder about their emotional status
I wonder if they get along with their family
I just keep thinking about them all the time, I can't sleep at night without think about people who's avg anime score is like 4-5.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I believe that, if there is a scoring system in place, it should be used by everyone, not just by the people who like the show in question. Otherwise, everything would have 8+ scores.

And even shows that I gave a 2, 3 or 4 to have at least a few decent elements, so in my opinion, even if I didn't enjoy them, they were still worth watching.

My mean score is still above 7+ but I'm pretty sure mine will go down in a few years. I understand having a low mean score if you watched a lot of animes but if you're around a hundred or two hundred with a mean score of 5, you should def look for something else.
I'm just lucky that I can find enjoyable animes for now.

There are some acceptable reasons for people with a lot of completed anime having a mean score somewhere between 4-5, or even lower. They may have the "no-drop policy", which affects their mean score negatively since they will finish watching anything, even if they hate it.

But, I do think that the vast majority of them, especially those with a very low mean score (almost 3 or below) are just edgy haters who want to look smart

Youre not really seeing the point, these people decided to willingly watch hundreds of bad anime? Pretty weird to put so much time into shows that you dont enjoy. Which is why these people are either doing it to bait reactions (like this post) or they just hate anime

Well, if we were being honest with ourselves, most people would have a 4~5 score. A lot, if not most anime and manga (heck, on any medium) aren't on the average, they are just below that, which on a scale of 1-10 would be a 4, so a mean score between 4 and 5 is a most natural thing to have for people who are more on the critical side.

Being below average doesn't necessarily means being bad, it means just that: fine but not as good as the average. Most mainstream entertainment would fall on either a 4 or 5 score (if not lower).
