"simple story (like kids anime) or complex story (like mature anime) which do you prefer more?"

It depends on my mood. Sometimes I need to chill and relax, sometimes I need mysteries to decipher.

Depends on the anime and how well they are written. Also agree on what the person above said. Waiting for that guy who says all shounen stories suck and people who enjoy them have trash taste, complex and seinen stories are objectively superior.

It totally depends lol. Why would I need to watch smth like Serial Experiments Lain when I'm burnt out. Kobayashi would be the perfect choice if I need to chill, but why would I want to watch Kobayashi when I want action? Then I would watch boku no hero. And then, if i want a complex story, why would I watch kobayashi or bnha? Lain helps me here.

Totally depends on the mood.

The fake is of far greater value. In its deliberate attempt to be real, it's more real than the real thing.

although I often opt for mature anime, watching Adventures in Moominvalley was something else. felt like enlightenment and I binged all episodes in a week or two, but I've always liked kids show anyway so it depends.

i guess it would be 'complex' stories judging by my own favorites (and they're not that complex...) but I've never really distinguished them in terms of 'simple stories' and 'complex stories' lol.

Truthfully i enjoy characters & competent storytelling more than, like, the raw and logistical complexity of the stories haha

I think you mean, which type of shows I like more. I like complex and mature shows where after finishing, I'd be astonished and my mind be blown by what I watched. something like Baccano

I don’t really care about the complexity of the plot, I only care about the execution and meaning (depth), Vagabond has a very simple plot but it’s incredibly deep and meaningful. Space Dandy has a simple yet extremely wack and bizarre and borderline crazy plot but it’s still insanely fun.
I enjoy them just as much as any complex plot.

This may shock some of you, but I prefer a good story. Simple whenever it can and complex when it needs to be. Ideally a story starts out simple and becomes more complex imo. If it's well written it will make you want to keep up with it. A good storyteller knows how to pace himself and is able to keep the balance between the introduced elements.

It depends.

Sometimes I prefer a simple, but well written story, over something that tries to be complex and fail.

I like both but I voted simple stories because I can't stand anime that try to be deep and mature through symbolism, metaphors, long silences and stuff like that (deep and mature through well written dialogues is much better).

It honestly depends on the world and setting. Like take Black Clover, that's perfect for a little kids anime and I'm fine with it. And then take Vinland Saga, perfect mature anime.

I'm fine with both, but I'm liking the mature anime because it can cover alot more things. (Attack on Titan, A Silent Voice, Vinland Saga, etc) They just "hit different"

These simple stories sell more and have more audience invested in them than those over the top complex stories, but I am fine with either of them.
Got no preferences to be honest.

Complex stories by a lot. I just enjoy more a good narrative with an interesting plot and characters than other things. Tho it doesn't mean that simple stories can't be good.
Like other coments said, it depends on the mood, but in general I like more complex stories.

Depends on my mood and other aspects in the show. Most of my favorites have a pretty complex story but I'm not always in the mood of some deconstructive thesis on the human condition or something, sometimes I just wanna see Takagai teasing Nishikata for 24 episodes.

I like both, I can be watching something completely brainless, or a childish adventure, or something just overly cute and simple and enjoy it exactly as much as something really dark, gory, mysterious, mature stuff. They don't really exclude each other.

But I guess the "dark, mature, complex" story needs to be actually good and make sense while more childish story doesn't need to make as much sense and can be watched without thinking too much. Like mediocre childish anime can be entertaining but mediocre complex anime gives headache.

I've actually seen a lot of kids anime that have much more complex plots than mature anime. Just think about things like Shugo Chara vs. K-On!.

It depends on my mood. Sometimes I'd prefer something that doesn't have too much to think about while other things I'd rather have something more intricate.

I'm more into complex stories (I love to try and see all the layers in a story, and I just find ""mature"" shows to generally be more impactful), but I don't mind simpler ones as well, though not really when it comes to battle shounens, I'm more into slice-of-life and comedy (I'm not trying to criticize battle shounens, I just know from experience that it's not what I enjoy the most).

In the end I just like a good balance of both types, I'd probably get tired of watching only complex shows.

Err OP, "Simple Stories" (insert Aria, Erin ^^^) could be much more mature than the so-called "complex" stories (insert NGE). Dumb question. In the end, it depends on which was more fun or had a good time with.

I personally enjoy both simple and complex anime.

I’d say simple stories are the ones that are very clear and straightforward with its ideas and messages. The story structure may often be quite linear as well.

Complex stories in my opinion, are not always clear and straightforward with its ideas/messages. They generally have a lot of moving parts as well as twists and turns too.

for all those saying there are mature simple stories and complex kids anime there is always an exception to the rule and my wordings is meant to not be an absolute rule but a rule of thumb again

and for people saying it depends thats why im asking if what you prefer more so think of it like a spectrum for example 51% preferring complex stories while 49% preferring simple stories

anyway this poll so far is proof that MAL is not part of the mainstream population since mainstream entertainment are usually labelled for being generic or simple

Like others said, it depends on the mood. Sometimes I like watching relatively simple anime and sometimes I like watching relatively complex anime. Both are good in their own ways. That being said, shows with mature themes usually end up on my favorites a lot more often than shows with simple storylines.

why tho? I understand about the long silences but not so the rest coz in my book both dialogue and symbolism are equally valid methods if executed well.

I get you but a lot of them here are simply 50-50 i guess. Maybe you should be more specific about the meanings of "simple" and "complex" themselves bcoz you put it a bit too general.

So for me:

Simple - more casual, light toned, requires not a lot of thinking, direct storytelling etc

Complex - opposite of the above

Depends on the anime themselves which spectrum they're on. So that's why i think it depends on the mood, its length and whatnot.

mature and complex stories are often more satisfying to watch. They can go to higher highs and lower lows than your generic shonen. More of a focus on character development, more complexity, forces you to pay attention - and rewards you for doing so.

however I don't think one is inherently better than the other. You can write good stories for both types, but in general there is more quality control with adult anime. Shonen has the "it's a kids show so it's allowed to be dumb and stupid" misconception surrounding it, massively reducing the accountability for creators.

I tend to have a good mix of both in my watching history.. but I personally prefer more mature anime as of late. After watching Perfect Blue, I decided I liked the mature themes more than the simplistic ones that I had been spending most of my time with.
