Zoom Player, been using the player for the longest time.
Feels clean, probably one of the better players out there for .MKV files aswell.

Perhaps the biggest and most respectable open-source project in video players field.

MX player, been using it once I've found out that .mkv files can't easily ready in normal video apps in your device.

It's one of the best players out there and recommend you for it.

I would go with a pi and MPC if I had to get another player as my PVR can on handle SRT subs.

I'd recommend getting a BD player with a USB slot so you can watch torrented anime on your TV. This is how I watch everything now, aside from shows I own physically.

Mostly VLC and MPC for anything VLC can't play. They are both free. My TV has a USB slot that will play X265 and lower,so I will also use that for playing anime.

Potplayer, I like the fact it just picks up the playlist from one file, or it keeps the play list you last watch. Also the interface is pretty easy to navigate and can be customised.
Though I don't like how they keep changing the skin every update.

VLC is a backup, since there is rarely a file that ends up all distorted on Potplayer that doesn't on VLC.

I use MPC-BE, which I guess was based on Media Player Classic. I switched to it because Media Player Classic stopped development in 2017, and after I ran into some bug or something, I ditched MPC and switched to MPC-BE. I love it. I also sometimes use VLC.

On my phone, I use VLC to play everything.

On my iPad, I use VLC, but last year when VLC for iOS had the big update that kind of screwed it up (which is now fixed and a lot better), I bought an app called 8Player Pro to play MKVs. I actually still use 8Player Pro more often because I just stuck with it. But VLC is free.
