What constitutes something “hidden” is subjective, but I figure anything under 150k members to be unknown to most, the number of members also would be affected by what year it came out. I could be wrong about that, though.

My choice would be Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuite Iru (Run with the wind). It came out in Fall of 2018, yet remains as more of a cult favorite than a regular name. I don’t really watch sports anime, but I was really impressed with the characters and writing.

I also agree with Run With the Wind, watched it when it aired and was one of my favourites of the season.
I wish Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju was more well known because everything about it is stunning and is so gripping. One of the best anime I've seen I think.

Nodame Cantabile should be much more appreciated as a romantic SoL. It deserves the "classical music anime" title much more than Your Lie in April.

The main problem is the animation, which is low-budget so in concerts ends up relying on still-shots and... oh god, awful CGI instruments. To compensate for that, however, the story is entertaining and the characters feel like they could be real people. They're all average individually but somehow end up with a good chemistry.

If you're into classical music and SoL, you should give it a try.

PS: It's also one of the few shows where the main characters aren't high-schoolers. They start in college and working from the 2nd season onwards.

PS2: It's also one of the very few anime that is set in Europe (from the second season onwards).

I’ve had that on my plan to watch list for a while now, I’ll make sure to try it out soon!

Interesting take, I liked Shigatsu, but it felt lacking sometimes like its representation of depression was kind of off target to me, but the animation is brilliant. I look forward to watching Nodame, adult characters are usually much more interesting

I think that Spice and Wolf deserves more attention than it gets. The mind games that the characters go through to win their economic desires are awesome.

Fireball Charming (2011!) It has 7000 "Members" on MAL D: It´s a 3D short (13 episodes, 2 minutes each) anime about a robot duchess named Drossel.
She makes this show! (her Japanese VA is amazing haha) It´s partially a comedy, so be "warned"
Also. 2011 Drossel design - best design.

Mahoujin Guruguru (15 000 viewers) is the definition of a hidden gem (for me). It's one of the funniest parody anime I've seen, if not the funniest anime I've seen. It's largely overlooked for its artsyle, which is a shame, because its simply hilarious.

3-Gatsu no Lion SHOULD be more popular, but that doesn't mean its a hidden gem. Many people already know how perfect it is, me included.

If I had to pick literally only one it would probably be Gungrave.

Unconventional scenario paired with good story writing, actual character development and some nice action. Only thing I didn't like was the necrolyze stuff.

Well the fact that you are only getting half the story (the producers cut it short in the middle of production and the team was too far in the form a resolution with what they had, so they just aired the 12 episodes) and little hope of a continuation and conclusion (a fan movie was planned but that might not work out) means (some) people are probably going to avoid it

I watched season 1 in 2 days. It is absolutely hilarious. I was laughing my butt off every single episode. It kinda has the rough aesthetics and over the top animation of Kill la Kill, and the bizarre nature of, well, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

This. Nodame season 1 is one of the best adult romantic comedies in anime whereas Your Lie in April is cheesy, emotionally manipulative teenager bait (I hate it with a passion). Which is no surprise, the former is Seinen and the latter is Shounen - and it shows extremely strong. My problem with Nodame was that a very strong first season is followed by fairly mediocre sequels, only towards the end it recovers a bit.

@Thigh-Crusader romance for of adults isn't this rare in anime, the whole Josei genre is pretty much about that. Check out stuff like Nana, Hachimitsu to Clover, Ookami to Koushinryou, Kuragehime, Sakamichi no Apollon and so on.

This is THE SAME! case with Violet Evergarden. Pure con-art against the viewers. It is great at least you are not one of the victimized, blissfully ignorant people who sign the praises to this metaphorical oppression.

This is not anime but I just recently read this manga in one sitting, I thought it was really well done and it felt very realistic, every characters felt alive, it addressed real world problem everyone can relate to, and offered good arguments and counterarguments, food for thought, as well as wholesome and angsty scenes.

Id say,,,.
1) Gin no saji (or silver spoon ) : its very refreshing Anime with new settings,,,its based on an agricultural school..
2) Alderamin on the sky (I dunno the Japanese name ) : if you liked code geass,,then exclude the mecha part and this Anime is for you...
3) Nana : a more true to reality adult romance anime...
4)spice and wolf : a romantic story of a merchant and a wolf girl ( a gos apparently)
I am not sure if its hidden...

+1 for Gin no Saji, +1 Zetsuen no Tempest

Some other underrated gems:
1. Youkai Apartment no Yuuga na Nichijou is so wholesome, I love it. Plus, I learned more life lessons watching this than in any bible study class.
2. Banana Fish is a wonderful watch. I don't think you can go wrong with this one.
3. Paradise Kiss has a realistic romance with an interesting premise. More people should try this instead of the typical high school drivel.

Sketchbook: Full Color's. Slow-paced slice of life may not be for everyone, but even among fans of the genre I think this one is too often forgotten or ignored.
It may be because it looks like a low budget version of Aria (same studio, and with cross-references), but in terms of characters, humor and script it's top notch. The music is amazing. Not to mention it was one of Kana Hanazawa's first jobs.

I’ve been enjoying Yesterday who Utatte more than I thought I would at the start of the season, though I didn’t really know what it was. It’s kind of surreal to see some of my own problems in an anime, but that’s probably why I like it. People will appreciate it in time, I think
