As title says, I want to hear about your favorite anime that have aired in the 20th century.
Mine would be Evangelion and Dragon Ball Z.
Also, do you prefer watching old anime (early 21st century counts as well) such as those or do you try to keep up with all the new anime coming out each season?

Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

I prefer new anime, because old anime will always be there. I want to experience things as they come out.

Mine is probably Ashita no Joe.
Overall, I prefer newer anime because I can find more interesting stories in the small minority of them that are actually original.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes by far. Although I really enjoy Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo and Sekai no Monshou (assuming it counts since just first season aired in 1999).

In general I prefer new anime, although in some genres old anime are a lot better.

Mine would be Legend of Galactic Heroes, Maison Ikkoku, End of Evangelion and Card Captor Sakura (oddly mature show despite its shojo packaging). Pretty sure there will be a lot more if I took some time off to scrounge for older shows. Can't choose a lone favourite here :P

No preference since I like the old 80s, 90s animations as well as the modern animation (debar the poor use of CGI at places). Although I do prefer the older art style, since they drew females properly instead of weird mutants with balloons these days, nevertheless, this is a minor nitpick.

I have zero patience for keeping up with new shows since I prefer eating a complete meal instead of incomplete ones. Unless the anime is going to be a complete adaptation, very high chances that I won't touch it. Not a huge fan of the whole "journey>destination" mindset.

I'd have to say Akira. When I watched it as a kid, it has such a transformative effect on me, it was so different to anything I'd seen before. Also have a lot of love for Cowboy Bebop.

One piece, the anime is far from perfect, especially in recent years but a one piece anime fan is there both in sickness and in health. Regarding your follow up question, I suppose I have some preference towards newer shows as I enjoy seasonal discussion and am used to modern tropes and trends but I watch older shows on occasion and have every intention in only increasing my repertoire of watched older shows.

@CondemneDio hell ye an Ashita no Joe fan!

I haven't seen much before 2000 shows but liked all the ones I saw, my favorite being Cowboy Bebop. Giant Robo the Animation: The Day The Earth Stood Still is a very honorable mention and could get some more popularity.

Though I have seen only good old animes, I don't think older animes are better as I picked shows that had a minimum of recognition. Both are as good even though big changes have been done on the medium. I pick some seasonal shows after they finish airing and usually they are fine but nothing extremely good came out during last year that i watched.

Dragon Ball + Z. Greatness incarnated.

I like both old and modern, but I prefer the artstyles and coloring of pre2000 anime. Also I don't follow seasonal anime much because I don't like that 1-episode-a-week watching-regime. I generally watch them once they've finished airing or are about to.

I don't care about the age of the anime, but I suppose on average and volume, I enjoy newer anime more. Still, I'll watch old anime concurrently with new ones.

So far, Serial Experiment Lain for shows and Ghost in the Shell for movies.

Older anime all the way, I only watch newer ones when they make a big fuzz or they do interest me, I'm not interested in keeping up with seasonals.

Getter Robo, though tv character pilots were too nice, like with most adaptations back then
in the manga they were psychopaths, terrorists and murderers

1997's Berserk and 1998's Serial Experiments Lain, by a wide margin.

To a lesser extent, Petshop of Horrors, Angel Cop, and Rurouni Kenshin. A lot of the older Ghibli canon like Grave of the Fireflies, Nausicaa, Kiki's, Mononoke Hime, etc. and several other films like Ghost in the Shell and Doraemon 10.

And I prefer older in the sense of early 2000s before the switch from hand-painted cel animation to digital was made. And I prefer the mid-2000s (like 2003 - 2007) even after the digital switch just because I vastly prefer the style of animation still to today's. Seemed more lush with a lot of softer colors and more rounded edges and less sterile.

I would be fine giving up on new series and just living in the early to mid-2000s nostalgia bubble. And if something is airing currently, I won't watch it until it finishes anyway.

I generally don't like ranking my favorites but when I have to I usually go with Cowboy Bebop as my #1, so obviously I have to pick it for the 20th century as well. I've rewatched it more often than my other favorites and it keeps getting better the more I rewatch it.

As for the second question, I've been keeping up with seasonals since the beginning of simulcasting ~2010 so there shouldn't be alot of shows I missed out on since then, at least not in regards to my taste. But I also watched a ton of classics from all decades and my favorites spread from the 70s to the 2010s so idk which I prefer. I love cel animation to death and will always like 80s anime soundtracks more than most modern OSTs, but the sheer variety of themes and styles that come with the quantity of modern anime is hard to beat either. It's like asking me to pick between 70s Dezaki and 2010s Yuasa, probably my two favorite anime directors. I can't pick one over the other. I just the anime medium as a whole, or even just animation and film in general. Every decade has titles I would not want to miss out on.
I probably regret this post by now.

I’ve barley watched anything prior to the mid 2000’s, so I don’t have too many options.

With that said, I’ll probably go with either Neon genesis Evangelion or Serial Experiments Lain.

I guess I like newer anime. I started following seasonal anime in late 2003/early 2004, and most of the anime I've seen since then has been stuff I've watched as it was airing. Still, I don't believe that new anime is somehow superior to older anime, and I do make a conscious effort to watch older stuff from time to time. I just like keeping up with current stuff.
