Best sports anime which are actually mainly about the sport are

Hajime no Ippo
Kuroko no Basket
Haikyuu
Slam Dunk
Yowamushi Pedal

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

Pretty much a universal fact, though I haven't seen all sports anime out there but I am confident that Ashita no Joe is at least top 2. Some others are Ping Pong The Animation, haven't watch Kaleido Star.

Mainly for sports? Probably Ippo, Haikyuu and Slam Dunk.

Ever made? I haven't watched enough to truly answer that but my personal favorite is One Outs. Also, I won't claim that Yowamushi Pedal is the best ever, but I've really liked it.

If we're talking about anime, then Haikyuu, Ping Pong, and Hajime no Ippo (though I have yet to watch Ippo, but from what I've seen, it looks amazing). If we bring manga into this, then Slam Dunk and Ashita no Joe.

If we're talking classic sports anime, then I'll go with Major.

If we're talking less traditional sports anime, I'll go with Joe and Ping Pong.
I probably regret this post by now.

I suppose this would be a good place to ask if anyone has seen any Track and Field/Cross Country/Olympics (Track and Field/Marathon)/Marathon/Road Running, etc anime or manga. If you have seen any, please tell me. I would strongly prefer them to have running as the centerpiece but if its a side aspect, I guess I'll try them out anyway.

There's a couple of good soccer anime. Giant Killing and Ginga e kickoff are probably my favorites, Hungra Heart was pretty good at least in the second half and there's Whistle! and Aoki Densetsu Shoot which I haven't seen yet but hear good things about. Only one I didn't find to be good was Area no Kishi.
I probably regret this post by now.

Diamond no Ace is awesome. Same for Ping Pong.

Hajime no Ippo is also really good(especially the first one iirc), but the art becomes worse and worse between each season.

as a non sport lover/ I don't give a shit about them pretty much, I'd say one outs or ping pong because they don't fully concentrate on the sport. but idk about the rest since I'm not the audience.

Atm Major is the best thing i have watched when it comes to that genre.
But my favorite woud be Kaleido Star the female character is amazing and made me enjoy the show alot.

I haven't watched Slam Dunk or ashita no joe yet.
I heard both of them is amazing, so maybe it will change.

Haven't exactly watched every sports anime out there to say anything about the 'best sports anime ever made', but so far it's Haikyuu!! for me. I doubt I'll ever see anything better than that.

Next Season a new Challenger will approach though.

Sports in general: Major - Easy. Follows a character from childhood to adulthood. I've seen around 80+ sports anime and NONE of them go that long of a journey. Shows many sports tactics, strategies, types of teams/players from the best of the best. Also has family values, friendship, and following your dreams. Great premise, as in it's not just some kids playing sports for fun because they're bored but the main character actually has a reason behind it.

...but more on team building & friendship: Chihayafuru, followed by Free!.

...with focus on character development: Ookiku Furikabutte. Warning: Slow.

...with shounen elements and extreme excitement: Haikyuu!!.

...and psychological: One Outs, with Ping Pong the Animation behind.

...but more romance focus: Cross Game. (manga I read, not anime)

...with focus on winning: Prince of Tennis and Yowamushi Pedal. These two sports anime will give you feel-good feels since the MCs just keep winning.

...for a beginner to anime: Kuroko no Basuke & Haikyuu!!

I'd definitely say Haikyuu when it comes to presentation and enjoyment, but story and character-wise I believe Hajime no Ippo is the most appealing.
