let me just start off by saying don't get pissy with me just cause I called them 'the big five' I only say that because they are 5 of the biggest animes/manga ever with probably the most anime/manga sold, games sold, merchandise sold and and at least one of them is always pretty much in anyones top 10 anime list that said there not the best animes ever with there sometimes boring storylines and long filler eps but I'd like to find out your views like so.

Naruto: I do like naruto and it has some great characters but the fact that at times there are so many fillers really puts you off trying to carry on and watch it though some fillers are good for character development but some can be really pointless.

dragon ball z: A favourite of mine being one of the first animes I watched when I was younger its extreme earth shattering battles and memorable enemies made it a favourite of mine when I was a kid....but now? well when I re-watch it I just don't feel all that excited watching it like I used to and watching GT always annoys me the only good thing that came out of it was super saiyan 4 and now theres dragon ball super which I feel like why? I hated gt I hated evolution and now theres super other people might like it but it seems stupid the god form looks lame and the enemies are boring.

bleach: I liked it up to the point were they go to los noches to rescue orihime cause then when the big fight is about to start they just cut off into a different storyline which was boring as hell.

one piece: I can't say much cause I've only seen a few eps but its the latest of the five I've seen but its the first to take me a whille to actually get into it not to say luffy isn't a good character or anything.

fairy tail: I like fairy tail in some ways cause of funny character like happy and natsu but Isn't lucy meant to be the main character in a sense cause to me it looks like shes been sidelined for the real main character natsu. I always feel sorry for the female characters in the show for the fact that they just get overly sexualized which is totally unnecessary lucy is half naked or naked most times erza is always in some tight revealing clothing that shows off her cleavage its just rather annoying when they could of really developed there female characters into good ones.

So let me know what your thoughts are I'd love to hear.

I liked Naruto until the Pain arc with the chunin exam arc being my favorite.
One Piece is the best one but lately they fucked up the pace in the anime. Barely watchable.
Dragon Ball should have ended with the Cell tournament. The "original" Dragon Ball it's one of my favorite shows and i rated it 9. Probably i'm blinded by nostalgia.

Naruto: you can simply avoid the fillers and you'll have a good watch..but the last arc is shit..you can do nothing about it..
Bleach: was good until it became bad..
Fairy Tail: generic, lot of fanservice, no solid storyline..some arcs are unwatchable..no sens of danger AT ALL..!!
One Piece: slow pacing, fanservice, repetitiveness, lot of shitty side characters
DBZ: all the above issues... DB Kai is way better..

Naruto has easily the most intriguing story of those, but the anime version suffers a lot from shitty and long-winded fillers disrupting the flow of the story which is why it was always hard for me get as attached to it as to One Piece, which has more or less no overarching plot but feels like one continuous journey and adventure from start to finish because even the fillers are implemented in ways that don't disrupt the flow of events. It also has my favorite world and setting out of all battle shounen, it has better comedy moments than most of the others and in terms of designs and characters I also love it the most.

One Piece in general is my clear favorite from those shows, I love the worldbuilding, the characters, the comedy, the setting, pretty much anything. Even the powers and battles are fairly decent although not among the best of the genre for the most part.

Naruto is for me more in the FMA category of battle shounen where they have a clear plot progression instead of this loose adventure kind of setup that most of the others have in one way or the other. I can only judge from the anime version since I don't read the manga for those and never will, but even with all the shitty and disruptive fillers the story still managed to captivate and intrigue me for most of its duration. There have been tons of great story arcs both in the original and Shippuuden and the only reason why I can't really rate it higher is because the fillers really did make the show a literal pain to watch on so many occasions over the years. I can't forgive them for ruining my viewing experience so regularly. During the last ~200 episodes of Shippuuden the fillers got better and I was actually enjoying most of them (chuuni exams v2, Kakashi past, Itachi fillers) so I have to wonder why they didn't make good ones from the start. But whatever. Naruto is still my second favorite out of those since OP omitted HxH. It also has the best battle system of the 5 shows mentioned in this thread.

Dragon Ball can be very long-winded, predictable and repetitive but overall it still has the biggest scale and the biggest timejumps resulting in some unique setups like the sons of the MC taking over in the later parts and whatnot. Stuff like that makes DB still an enjoyable and interesting show even setting aside all the nostalgia from my childhood. It also has decent characters, nice designs and fairly hilarious comedy. Probably the 3rd best of those shows for me.

Fairy Tail is pretty generic overall but does a good job of using the Guild setting to establish a sense of family and making the departure or joining of new team members an emotional event. I really like the whole emotional sense of belonging attached to the guild(s) in the show, it's like a bigger and more changing version of the ship crews of One Piece. That's the biggest strength of FT for me. Unfortunately the show has lackluster MCs which are just okay enough not to make me think badly about the show, but certainly don't particularly draw me in. The show really shines more if you see it as an ensemble cast isntead of focusing too much on the same 3-4 MCs for each arc. And luckily the show does focus a lot on other characters too.
In terms of plot progression and worldbuilding the show kinda lacks its own identity. It seems like it takes a lot of different ideas and tries to implement them but it's having a hard time knowing what exactly it wants to do, so the arcs can feel very different from each other and there isn't really much of a general sense of direction for where the plot is headed, unlike OP or Naruto. It also has legit some of the worst fillers I've ever seen and I've seen Naruto and Bleach fillers. The good thing is that it was really a great and enjoyable series for most of the first ~100 episodes or so but after that is when fillers started and the canon arcs became hit and miss too. The 2014 season ended up jumping between utterly boring and very exciting episodes even within the same arc so overall the inconsistency defininitely dropped it a bit in my favor.

Bleach is just utterly mediocre. The first arc was exciting, yes. There are a lot of promising characters and ideas involved in the show, yes. But most of those get thrown aside sooner or later, or end up completely underdeveloped because the author was in a rush to start another random arc instead of using the good ideas he already introduced to their full extent. One of the biggest things in that regard are the Vizard, who were a very inriguing addition but it felt like he got tired of them halfway through, then rushed through the finale of their arc and barely ever used them again afterwards. But the whole show is full of potential that ended up not being tapped into.
The other big issue I have with the show is that the characters are all boring and have no real personalities. Ichigo is the blandest most generic battle shounen MC I know, the only thing you need to know about him is that he wants to protext his friends and sisters and whatnot. That's literally his complete personality established over hundreds of episodes. He has no love interest, no dreams, no goals, no particular values, nothing that makes him memorable in any way.
The best characters in the show where always side characters. Because on the one hand those can live off a cool design and personality alone, and on the other hand they don't appear often enough to get tired of them. And yeah, Bleach does have great designs for both enemies and friend side characters, it had some great fights and abilities, but from all the battle shounen I've seen it has the least emotional impact, the least entertaining comedy, the least coherent worldbuilding and just a general lack of anything appealing aside from pitting characters with cool designs and cool abilities against each other. The arcs seem generally forced and made up on the spot instead of giving the impression of coherent plot progression and the authors tendencies to only half-use aspects he introduces befour you discard them and instead bring some other random idea in the mix which he'll most likely abandon before it fully bears fruit as well, definitely makes this more of a chore to watch. Let's not forget the extraordinarily boring fillers too (that's what happens if none of the characters is interesting by themselves).
So I definitely pick Bleach as the worst of those. I always thought that and probably always will.
I probably regret this post by now.

They're all pretty flawed as anime goes and the pacing are droll. I hate FT though cause fuck FT.

One Piece - Looks like it was drawn by someone using their feet, every single character yells every single line.
Naruto - Did you know running with your arms behind your back makes you go faster?
Bleach - Had no idea what it wanted to be so it ended out becoming nothing.
DBZ - Don't know about DBZ and I don't care.
Fairy Tail - Boobs and butts and butts and boobs...and occasional anthropomorphic cats.

One Piece - Lost interest pretty quickly
Naruto - Good but the manga ending killed it.
Bleach - Rukia arc was the only redeeming point of it. Arrancars and espada were also cool. Other than that it's very meh.
Dbz - My favourite out of the 5
Fairy Tail - I have dropped it.

I already had problems with the term "big three", now this eh

One Piece: It's a mastapeece
Naruto: Starts good and goes to shit on Shippuden
Bleach: Starts good and goes to shit after Soul Society
Dragonball: Needs to die, DB is shit and DBZ is boring
Fairy Tail: It's good until Fantasia, then it goes to the purest, worst form of shit
gone bai bai

I haven't seen any of them. None of them look that great so I doubt I'm missing anything. CGDCT and battle seinen are both much better than battle shounen. I wouldn't mind watching Inuyasha as much since it's said to have a high importance on romance.

Dragon Ball Z = The true classic. Pacing is as slow as a snail, but has tons of memorable scenes that outdo all other battle shounen.
Naruto = Good for the first couple of arcs. (Zabuza was an amazing villain.)
Bleach = Pretty awesome up to the end of the Soul Society arc.
One Piece = Starts off strong, but lost interest in it around episode 100 or whatever.
Fairy Tail = Takes everything that's awesome about battle shounen and makes it better. The 2014 anime was a bit of a letdown, though.

One piece: Good until Dressrossa Arc because Toei decided to become a shitty studio at that point.

Naruto: Decent if not for unlimited amounts of fillers and bad animation.

Dragon Ball Z: Good for its time, super simplistic story, overpowered fights is the only good part.

Fairy Tails: Good at its comedy and fanservice parts, bad at everything else...Should've been a comedy anime instead.

Bleach: Story a little stronger than DBZ, animation a little better than naruto. Second place in the amount of fillers...

I enjoyed Naruto until after the Pain Battle, but god that 4th shinobi war is awful. All the way from the declaration of war to the very end. At least most of the arcs before that were good (Fillers excluded).

Bleach.. ? Honestly, it's my least favourite of the big five. I almost lost any interest in the anime after the Arrancar arc. I'm still watching the manga without even knowing where this is headed.

Even though I hate all the useless fanservice & friendship power abuse in Fairy Tail... Eh, at least it surprisingly keeps my interest more than Bleach does. Maybe it's just because the end is near & I wanna see it.

DB & DBZ were good. Nothing more, nothing less. I can't get into the more recent ones though (DBZ Kai & DBS).

So I have to say, One Piece is actually my favourite out of the 5. It might be absurdly long & have some questionable art/animation moments, but what I love is the story behind the universe of OP, the characters, ... Well pretty much anything aside from the animation & the length.

Even if all of them are overrated they have introduced many people to anime. Which I think is a great thing!

I grew up through my teenage years watching Naruto, Fairy Tail, and One Piece. While all have been impactful on my life and view of anime as a whole, One Piece is the only one that still has a huge impact and I still hold upon a golden pedestal. I can say in a dedicated defensive manner that up until the timeskip One Piece is my favorite show of all time.

While, Naruto I've enjoyed now I grow weary. I wish I stuck with the manga instead as the anime is painfully slow, and while the canon picked back up there's still some filler I need to binge. I just want it to end, I feel like an old lady rambling off about how she just wants things to end, but I do. I really do, I just want them to let the show finish once and for all.

I can never respect Fairy Tail, but it's a great time killer. I can't bear filler arcs but when they actually get stuff done in the show, well, it can be exciting. Nothing more then that though.

purely based on the manga:

naruto: i enjoyed ~most~ of it when i read it but it had only two memorable arcs. after finishing the manga and watching HxH i noticed that naruto is just a copy of HxH

dragon ball: i respect it for the influence it had but it's one of the worst manga ever created.

bleach: never read it but i don't hear much positive stuff lately...

one piece: best manga i've ever read. i cry in every flashback and even enjoy slower paced chapters. the world building, characters etc is perfect and the quality of the drawing actually is great (you can see odas improvements in his drawings)

fairy tail: similar to naruto: just a one piece copy. i could kinda enjoy ~300 chapters (mainly because of catching up) but when i was caught up i hated the manga with each week a little bit more. it's full of plot holes, plot armor and random friendship power ups and the quality of the writing on many parts was on the same level as kishimotos romance writing...

One Piece: Too long winded, but seems more interesting than the other big 3 titles. I'm mainly abstaining from even trying to get into it to avoid filler rut or never being able to catch up to the thing, so…
Naruto: Meh, dropped for a reason. Tried watching / reading it years ago and I wasn't engaged. The animation is also not very good.
Bleach: Seems about as meh as Naruto.
Fairy Tale: Haven't given a chance, but reception is so mixed and episode count is so long
DBZ: watched some of this as a child on tv, wasn't super enthralled either. Overpowered pointless battle bara stuff doesn't thrill me unless it has a good plot.

Dragonball/Dragonball Z = iconic, biggest anime ever, godfather of all battle shounen anime.
One Piece = it used to be so good, but it started to drop in terms of quality after the timeskip. now its a borefest
Fairy Tail=absolutely TRAGIC. poor mans One Piece.
Naruto= the classic Naruto is so so good, Shipuuden is terrible (except for the Pain arc). The War arc is the worst arc Ive ever seen in an anime
Bleach=I liked the first arc a lot, be the other episodes...no

I've seen DBZ and enjoyed it, but I can't say I'm a huge fan of it. It was usually one of those shows I'd watch just to pass the time until a better show came on. I was more into Yu Yu Hakusho, or Ruroni Kenshin, or some of the Gundam series that aired.

Naruto and Bleach both became popular when I was in my "Anime sucks" phase for a few years. I watched the first few episodes of both and stopped. I got back into anime with Death Note, and never bothered with either shows and instead used that time to watch a bunch of other, shorter shows. Now, when me and my little brother see a random episode of either show pop up on T.V., we both kinda laugh at it because it's exactly what we think of when we think "stereotypical shounen anime." I can't say I hate them, I just have no interest in them as I'm past the age where I might've enjoyed them.

One Piece I've seen bits and pieces of the 4kids version, and then maybe two or three years ago watched the first twenty or so episodes. I liked what I saw, but never felt the desire of going through 500+ episodes of it.

I never watched Fairy Tail and don't care to.

I only watched 63 episodes of One Piece so while I didn't even scratch the surface I will give my 2 cents on that. For One Piece I liked the characters somewhat but what really killed the show for me and the reason behind why I dropped it was the pacing. The other show I have watched is Naruto. I really liked Naruto the main story is great in my opinion what killed the anime for me was the filler hence why I dropped it and read the manga.

Naruto - I kind of like the manga but the anime (Shippuuden) is really bad and is mostly fillers.
Dragon Ball Z - I tried to watch it but I couldn't get into it.
Bleach - The beginning is okay but the rest is pretty boring and repetitive.
One Piece - I really like it but it's been repetitive for a while now.
Fairy Tail - Fun characters with really bad storytelling.

Naruto = Of the mentioned shows, this is the one I watched extensively. I stopped around the time Tobi was revealed to be... I really enjoyed Naruto. Fun memories of it.
Bleach = Like OP, I quit in the middle but the comedy in this show had me laughing. I plan on watching it someday although my friends have spoilt it for me so maybe not haha
Fairy Tail = Same as Bleach
Dragon Ball Z = My childhood. But I have forgotten.

Naruto: Didn't really care for the first 80 episodes. First 80 episodes are a 6/10 to me. Episodes 81-135 are an 8/10 to me. Sasuke Recovery Mission arc is best arc in Part 1. Has 4 episodes I can rewatch over and over again. Good animation. Mostly comedic and lighthearted. I appreciate the lack of still frames it has, and fluid and dynamic animation for the important episodes. I don't watch the fillers, but there is too much of it.

Naruto Shippuuden: I like its more dark and serious tone compared to Part 1, also the characters (of Naruto's generation) maturing after the timeskip. The fights are great. Pain Assault arc is best arc in Shippuuden. Has 10 episodes I could rewatch over and over again. Again, I appreciate the lack of still frames it has, and fluid and dynamic animation for the important episodes. Though, I'm pretty annoyed how the anime keeps on making fillers after November 2014 (when the manga ended). Making fillers before the manga ended makes sense. Making fillers after the manga ended makes little sense and is just being milked at this point.

Dragon Ball: Didn't grow up watching it (unlike DBZ). Love the tournament arcs. Love how the show mostly focuses on Goku and like how adventurous it is. Mostly comedic and lighthearted. Fights are strategic at times. The fillers are good. Animation is average. Highly rewatchable.

Dragon Ball Z: Grew up watching it. The fillers are crap. The animation is great. Cell saga is the best saga. Exciting fights. Less adventurous. Highly rewatchable.

Bleach: Great fights. So much filler, but I skip them. Probably has the best soundtrack I've heard in an anime. Good animation.

One Piece: First 325 episodes are good. Crappy fights. Characters yelling every single line is annoying. Nobody ever dies. A lot of crying. Animation is average. Fishman Island arc is garbage. Fillers are okay. I used to like this show, but now I don't.

Fairy Tail: Has some of the funniest scenes I've seen in an anime. It doesn't take itself seriously. The fights are okay. Grand Magic Games arc is awesome. First 150 episodes are a 7/10 to me. Episodes 151-175 are a 9/10 to me. No blood is annoying. The girls are hot. Too many still frames during fight scenes. The fillers are crap.

Naruto: MY FAVORITE ANIME OF ALL TIME! The plot and progression of the story + characters and the amount of foreshadowing put into Naruto blows my mind!~ Unlike many others I love the fillers because it explores the side characters more and furthers character development and we also get funny episodes like Kakashi's face ~ When I think of the characters of Naruto there is a feeling of endearment because of the connection I can feel with each and every character including the villians~ ahhh almost all the villains have a sad story (Pain) or sacrificed themself to protect their loved ones (Itachi) or had wrong methods to what they thought was the right thing to do (Danzo)

Dragon Ball Z: Remember watching with my cousin when I was younger but not interested

Bleach: Never watched

One Piece: Never watched and never will

Fairy Tail: Heard of it might give it a try

Dragon Ball Z: Most influential anime of all time. It's a global phenomenon, still the best selling manga in my book (look at the per volume sales, not entire series..the entire Dragon Ball saga is only 42 volumes, let alone the 26 of Z), probably brought the most amount of people to anime, and I'm highly thankful for it. It's the second best series out of "the big 5" and one of the only 2 good ones.

One Piece: My favorite series of all time. It's a masterpiece of shounen that captures a sense of adventure, magic, and emotion like no other series I've ever read/watched.

Naruto: The original Naruto is actually underrated by some because it gets looped in with its sequel. I really enjoyed the original and its a big part of my youth. The sequel tanked the series to the point where I couldn't even continue.

Bleach: Much like Naruto, it initially began great. In fact, you can argue that Volume 1-21/Soul Society Arc are some of the best Shounen has to offer. However, it became awful. I couldn't force myself to continue with the series and I was with it from the debut of episode 1 (yeah, I'm old school).

Fairy Tail: Never watched it and never will. I trust certain people's opinions and they've told me all I need to know about this series. Since I haven't seen it, it wouldn't be fair to evaluate it. I can fairly confidently say though that if I watched it, this would be my least favorite of them all.

Tried Naruto and Bleach again (after I have watched bits and pieces of that show a decade ago when I was a kid or a pre teen) and it was not for me... I might try One Piece soon but I have a feeling that Dragon Ball is not for me too(both of them I have watched bits and pieces a decade or so ago too. )

But, I absolutely adore Fairy Tail. Nakama powerups and all.

with all due respect but they're all overrated mainstream, however some of them took a big part in my childhood, I cried and laughed with them they're so dear to me, if you ask me about anjoyment hell yeah I enjoyed quite a lot of these animes tbh I just hate how people made it a thing, and when rating especially, bcz when talking about score personal enjoyment isn't the only thing you should consider, not when the plot is all about an overpowered MC getting hit by a villain, goes in a training trip, goes back to the villain and beats him with the annoying girl shouting his name in the background ofc, then villain becomes a friend and repeat.. that's just not it

Naruto: I find it incredibly mediocre. I used to enjoy it as a kid, but now I like it a lot less. The Zabuza arc and Chunin exams are still fun to read/watch. As for Shippuden, the only redeeming quality was the Akatsuki. Itachi, Zabuza, Rock Lee, and Gaara are the best characters.

Bleach: This anime is incredibly boring and didn't really appeal to my interests. Ichigo is probably my least favorite Shounen protagonist ever.

DBZ: DBZ was my childhood and it's really fun to watch. But it doesn't really hold up to me today.

Fairy Tail: I honestly love Fairy Tail. It just has such an amazing and pleasing feeling watching it. It makes me care for the characters like I actually knew them and I have an absolute blast watching it. The story can lack, but I don't really mind, the characters make it magical for me.

One Piece: One Piece is just a masterpiece of fiction. All of the stories about the creative world Oda himself created is told beautifully. It has the Cowboy Bebop effect where I love every main character. Filled with emotions and a driving story, I recommend One Piece.

I appreciate them but none of them are really my thing, don't enjoy stories that carry on forever.

Bleach: Starts off great with a fantastic story arc (1-65), however the series pacing and execution after that is awful. It gets bogged down with filler pretty bad, some of it is really obnoxious annoying filler and sometimes it just randomly cuts away in the middle of a great story arc to sabotage itself and insert a whole lame filler side-story. If it wasn't so badly put together it would really be an amazing show, but unfortunately it was botched. Sill the content that wasn't filler was very interesting, the action was great, and I like the characters. 7/10

Dragonball Z: My gateway anime. A good set of characters and some impressive action....when it actually gets to it instead of talking, starring and grunting which is what the majority of show consists of. There's a lot of better anime out there but I still liked it. 6/10

Fairy Tail: A highly entertaining action show with great characters, good music, and decent fights. Also one of the few longer running shows that stayed almost consistently good. It just kind of ends though and the sequel series' character designs are quite inferior to the first series. 8/10

Naruto: An okay series, but it really fell apart near the end with an incredibly long stretch of filler before they ended it, finally. The show is actually more interesting for it's secondary cast members like Shikimaru, Neji, Sakura, Lee, and Hinata rather than the title character, Naruto, who just annoyed the hell out of me most of the time. The second series, Shippuden, was better for improving my opinion of Naruto (the character) and having some more serious and epic story arcs like the Akatsuki and the Great Ninja War. It also had some really good music. However, this show too is plagued by insane amounts of boring filler. 6/10

One Piece: Dropped. It was already way too long to even consider trying to catch up plus the storyline wasn't doing anything for me and I really didn't like the main character.

Overall, after seeing how much better other genres were, I really kinda lost my taste for battle shounen, or at least the mediocre long-running forever-filler variety. I usually just avoid unless it's a sequel to something I've already seen or I didn't know what it was when I started it.

Naruto - it hasn't been well-written since part 1 but there's enough to like to make me a fan
Bleach - not sure it was ever well-written but i loved the soul society arc, been down hill since then though
One Piece - excellent world building but repetitive as fuck with overly long story arc & nigh existent character/relationship development
Fairy Tail - i think it started out well-written, it was fun & had interesting characters but it quickly declined into nonsense
DBZ - hasn't been well-written since early dragonball, repetitive as fuck

One Piece = Neverending

Naruto = Bestest in its first arcs when they took concepts and story elements from HxH. Beginning of Shippuden was nice too, pretty much any arc with the Akatsuki is gold.

Bleach = Loved the first few arcs so much, but it turned into such a ridiculous, convoluted mess. The rather dark but at the same time lighthearted atmosphere was completely gone by the end of the show, and the comedy became worse. The story just got dull and shitty. The music was great throughout the whole entire show though.

Fairy Tail = Mindless action, was a bit better in the first season (different arts tyle and studio?)

Dragon Ball Z = If you wanna pump up your masculinity, this show is a surefire way to do it. It's just so much fun :D

Naruto- Fillers made the anime medicore and the manga went downhill after the Pain story. The last arc sucked ass, bad villians, Naruto got more annoying, recycling old villians etc.. Still worth watching/reading.

One Piece- easily the best Shounen. Great worldbuilding, big epic planned out story, doesn't go overboard with the powerlevels. Almost every arc is good. Sadly the anime has been lacking since the TS, the manga is where its at.

Fairy Tal- just shit in every way. Bland characters I don't give a shit about, boring story and awful writing in general.

Bleach- never watched it much apart from a few eps on tv. Didn't look very good so never picked it up and from what I can gather that was the right decision.

Dragonball Z: Not as strong as Naruto and OP but its part of my childhood so because of nostalgia I don't care about its flaws. It will always be a legendary anime to me
