It has been revealed in the second issue of this year's Young Animal magazine that the TV anime adaptation of 3-gatsu no Lion (March Comes in Like a Lion) will be animated by studio Shaft. In addition, Akiyuki Shinobu is directing the upcoming series, and it will air on NHK in Fall 2016.

Synopsis
The protagonist is Rei, a 17-year-old shogi player. He lives by himself, does not have a family, does not go to school, and has scarcely any friends. Among his acquaintances is a family, which consists of a young woman, Akari, and two young girls, Momo and Hinata, and who also keep a numerous number of cats. (Source: Wikipedia, edited)

3-gatsu no Lion is drawn by Chika Umino and began publishing in 2007 with 11 volumes in print. The series was nominated for the 2nd Manga Taisho Award in 2009. In 2011, it won the 4th Manga Taisho Award and the 35th Kodansha Manga Award in the general category (shared with Uchuu Kyoudai). In 2014, it also won the Grand Award of the 18th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize.

Hmm, I wasn't expecting this. Was more expecting J.C. Staff.

Still looking forward to it though. I'm guessing it will debut for Summer 2016.

Ugh. Really disappointed as SHAFT's one of my least fave studios. At least, I hope it'll look more like Nisekoi and less like Mekaku City Actors.

Patiently waiting for cast announcement now. Praying Natsuki Hanae gets main role~

Yeah, seems more like an A1 or JC Staff series.

Not surprised by the director since he mostly works with Shaft. I wonder if this will also be filled with ridiculous head tilts......
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Pretty unexpected of SHAFT to take on a series such as this. Like many, I was thinking something along the line of J.C. Staff, Brains Base or A-1, but my expectations won't be any less. Shinbou might just pull off a decent Seinen out of this.

Ugh, all my excitement is gone with this announcement. ._.

Maybe I'll check episode 1 to see if the visuals arent filled with brim to the usual annoying shaft gimmicks.
Imagine a berserk anime by Yoshiaki kawajiri at Madhouse.

Now take a look at Berserk (2016).

Not familiar with the manga but sounds like Shaft secretly wants to be Madhouse and do a Chihayafuru for some alibi points.

but madhouse has morio asaka, shaft doesnt.

Now that I said it, this project would be so good if it was asaka x madhouse..... Alas.

Not with Shinbo directing it. "Trying something different" isn't in his vocabulary. This series does not seem fit for his annoying self-indulgent gimmicks at all.
It's a shame too, I've heard a lot of good things about this series and I've been planning on reading it for a while. Guess I'll pick up the manga and watch one episode of the anime when it airs and be disappointed. It seems to be an endless cycle at this point.

Didn't expect that, cos this doesn't seem like something SHAFT would do at all. Well, I'll still be interested to see how Shinbo's style is integrated into the series.

Pretty much. I mean, we can always hope, but given the recent series Shinbou/SHAFT have done, I wouldn't bring up my expectation.

I am seriously disappointed that Shaft is going to be the studio in charge of this series, as I've always felt that JC Staff who also handled the mangaka's previous work Hachimitsu to Clover is more suitable for this type of series. Shaft has proven that they couldn't change up their formula multiple times already for the past year, just take Nisekoi for example, and just like Nisekoi, Sangatsu doesn't go well with Shaft's style.

Bleh I think I'll just read the manga. *cough* or maybe that's what their aim is, to make people buy/read the manga instead *cough* that's genius *cough*

SHAFT and Akiyuki Shinobu haven't disappointed me yet, one of my favourite pairings. Arakawa, Monogatari series, Madoka Magica, Nisekoi and SZS are all great and done by that pairing. Not something I thought they would adapt, always saw them as only adapting comedy manga so quite surprised by this. They're certainly very creative so will be interesting to see how they adapt this. Just hope they decide to go out of their norm for the background art and keep the original character designs. Higher chance of it being 2-cour now as well.

There goes my hope and dream.
I expected JC Staff (they're kind of hit or miss with adaptions but getting better lately) or Madhouse. They had experiences. Shaft and Shinbo is not a good combination for this style.

Sounds like it'll be pretty cool and I'm interested, but not sure about SHAFT. If they go style over substance like they did Mekaku City Actors I'll probably just read the manga.

I think you meant to put "Akiyuki Shinbou" instead of "Akiyuki Shinobu".

Yeah, this series doesn't need any "style" to be good. It's a lot of still pictures, monologues and scenery porn. So something like A1's Shigatsu.

Can't say I'm too pleased that SHAFT is adapting this one. Even worse, Shinbou's directing. What a terrible fit for Umino Chika's very subdued story.

I guess we can expect lots and lots of head tilts. Wonderful.

But the thing is that Sangatsu no Lion doesn't need to be animated differently. Not like what happened with Mekaku City Actors.

It's pretty much perfect as a Manga. I'd prefer it not getting any adaptation than getting something trippy like what SHAFT is going to make.
