Christ, this episode was marvelous, simply marvelous. Even at this late stage it only gets better with each episode.

lmao @ the obvious and weak trolling on page 1. In any case, even if it is "obvious" that a main character would win, in this case it felt totally earned. The writers have been building towards this moment all season, it's not like this was some cheap asspul and out of nowhere Peco was suddenly more powerful than the world champion in the space of an episode. We've witnessed both Peco and Kazama's struggles throughout the entire series, and in both cases the result of this match made sense. In Peco's case it was him learning to trust his instincts, finding his "inner hero" again; in Kazama's case it was him learning to let go, and finding freedom through loss, while regaining his love of the sport. All of this was portrayed masterfully with the bird imagery, and for both players this felt very much like a "win". In that sense, this episode, and really the entire series, isn't a matter of simple winning and losing at all.

Gee, this is why people disgust me. People call Peco's comeback an asspull, and they are treated as the trolls or getting laughed at. Personally I felt that it was a llittle asspull-ish, but why not, it does not matter at all. The message came across to most of us, that's what matter. So what if it's a little asspull-ish? I can love a series even if it's not perfect, seem like people here can't, uh.

Absolutely amazing, I was so immersed in the episode during the match, Kazama's salvation and a little more about his backstory, and the reason why Peco is a hero, it was all done so well. To be honest at this point I still don't see the significance of the addition of Yurie lol.

Oh and, when is the traveler gonna make his appearance? He had that flashback of a game with someone that looks like Smile? o.o

Peco winning never gets me by surprise because it's heavily foreshadowed in the previous episodes. The hints are there; hero, robot, knee injury, making Peco vs Tsukimoto inevitable. They simply have to face each other. It's a bit hard to believe when one didn't see that happening.

Glad I'm rewatching this show and still enjoying the ride.

Honestly? Horrible episode. Peco should not have won this match. He has a bad knee injury and he's versing the current world champion. This fucking asspull could rival anything in Sword Art. Incredibly disappointed.

I think you're missing the point of the series. This is not your typical Shonen sport anime.

No, this episode is definitely straight out of your typical Shounen. Definitely has better characterisation and development but it has the same shitty asspulls. I had this series at a 9 before this episode, now it's at a 7.

Mindfuckingly epic match. An episode hasn't gotten me this pumped in months.

The animation made the match SOOOOOOOOO much more epic.

11/10. Easily the best episode in the show. It's going to be difficult as fuck for the finale to top this one.

This episode was friggin' amazing. Not only was the match between Peco and Kazama amazing, the interaction between them was great too. I loved how Peco got better as he started having fun, and his dialogue was funny. But Kazama, on the other hand, was the one who got the most development in this episode. His monologue was great, and the way he (re)started actually enjoying ping-pong made he smile. Even though he started losing the game, he won much more in his spirit.

You clearly dont know how sports work or never played sports in your life..
The best of the best will eventually fall and be overtaken by some no name.
The calling of "hero" is depicted as a miracle which eventually happen to any sports from time to time. It had nothing to do with hardwork vs talent.

I am aware of how old the post is.

But when we talk about the fu**** WORLD CHAMPION losing to someone who was just a scrub one year ago and is FU*** INJURED this all turns into fairy tails material

The only reason Kazama lost was just because the writer decided that we need to watch the cheesy ending when Tsukimoto finally smiles again because he can play vs Peco. Thats really all.

the thing that kazuma didn't have, lost, (or perhaps didn't have at all) was the love for the game. peco loved the game. he didn't play it how any other player did. his spirit for the game alone is what set kazuma's cold heart off balance. he learned that there are heroes, and that they can fly. he witnessed it with peco, just for a few precious minutes.

2. Why peco should win
"I love this game!" - Michael Jordan
Peco wins because he loves this game more than anyone. He simply loves ping pong and nothing more.
Smile plays for Peco
Kong and Kazama play for their families.
Akuma plays for wish fulfillment: He envied Peco and works hard to humiliate him.
As for his knee injury, Never underestimate the power of adrenaline rush. I bet he will beat Smile even if smile don't want to go easy on him. His knee will be a major problem after the final match though. Maybe that's why the show ends here - it is predictable that he will not make it to the top in the end if the story goes on all the way to the world tournament. But he is now a true hero. He will find a path at that time.

this is my favorite point.

"That's the hero song."
he sounded so much like an innocent child there, and here he is singing it again at 15.

;_; so in the end it's about peco/ko. like how LOTR is all about sam in the end. friends of the MC forever dude.

and i could NOT help but hum along to the peco/ko hero song.
so now peco/ko is a hero to two people now, cool.

and now we see smile destroy peco/ko next ep. i will miss you ping pong!!

As the Hero song echoes through his head, he remembered his passion and just went on a lightning surge adrenaline rush! He has freed Kazama from the pressures of the sport and shown him what it means to enjoy it again.

Peco vs Smile is destined but I never figured that it would happen so quick. My time with them is running out ;_;

You know I gotta be honest, I didn't expect Peco to be the hero. But his match against Kazama certainly lived up to that name. The song that was playing at the height of their match was sick too. The real question now is what the ending has in store for him. Will he fly too close to the sun and blow his knee out? Will he defeat Smile, what will Smile's reaction to his return be? Either way the series is going to have a hard time topping this one. I love the message that it's more important to enjoy the sport than to dominate in it.

Another thing I didn't expect going into Ping Pong is how developed the supporting cast is. Akuma big return here was a surprising and great character moment. I liked how he grew his hair out. How he had a girlfriend now. And his discussion with Ryuichi in the bathroom was one of the best parts of the episode. Considering he seemed like such a one note villain at the beginning of the series. This is some pretty cool stuff. I also liked Ryuichi is cousin(/girlfriend?) leaving at the beginning. All of her scenes with her Dad left an impact on me for some reason. And her goodbye was no different.

I've thoroughly enjoyed this series, go figure. It's balanced solid character development, with genuinely thrilling and engaging depictions of the sport of Ping Pong. And I can't wait for the next episode when it finally makes good on that crazy OP.

"We humans aren't built to fly." One of the biggest disappointments of being human...

Even though the art style wasn't the most visually appealing to me at first, I think this show has some serious sakuga moments, especially during the ping pong moments. Kinda ugly characters work much better here than they do in Aku no Hana, though that could also have to do with the fact that they're still actually animated while Aku no Hana used shitty rotoscoping.

Kazama seriously started having a meltdown during that match because of Peco. All the backstory we have on him really contributes to the "psychological" genre being on this anime.

Old lady's golden line of the episode: "Don't think, kid, you don't have the brains for it!"

This was a deep emotional and good ep. Poor Ryuuchi (Dragon) Kazama. No wonder he doesn't believe in heroes after loosing his father. Damn, this was a good ep. The use of metaphor to depict the match was just amazing. By playing against Peco he changed his mind about heroes and that people can "fly". It's just amazing way to tell how much you love a sport that it can make you do anything, even fly. It's sad for Kazama that Emiko won't be there anymore. I think he would appreciate being with her more after loosing the match. Maybe he will go after her to London. Hopefully that's the case. That would be so lovely. :)

So Peco (Hoshino) won the match, huh. Well, I had a suspect that. So Smile is going to be in the same situation as his coach were. Gonna play against his best friend with a injured leg. This is gonna be intense. What is he going to do. Loose on purpose, like his coach, or play against him full out. I can assume his leg won't last for another intense match, so this is gonna be really interesting.

i think that's the real test... i don't even know who to root for! ideally peco wins even though smile doesn't go easy... hoping we get to see smile actually smile too :)

it's a small part of the episode, but my favorite part was when peco remembered that song that smile always hums. it's his hero song! my jaw dropped, i remember when smile first starting humming early on in the series while playing against someone. i thought he was being an asshat not taking the game seriously, but really he was just rooting for peco the whole time. my heart!

A full episode dedicated for a Hero against the Dragon.

A thrilling match, although in the end I knew the real winner. However, the illustrations that being used on here and there were truly astonishing. Its just, ah, i can't say anymore, no good words could described what i was feel. I am very satisfied with their effort, just that. Its justified everything, until its last seconds. Yeah, i am smiled, i just easily standing up to give a non-stop hands clap. A very good definition of masterpiece. Yeah, no other doubt, no need more explanations. Its just, way too fluent than i shall predict.

So, the last one was their final battle. A prediction went too high. Would they ended it in a good way? Or, its just replayed the history? Lets see the next!
