Going back to episode 1 they're the 99th class, so the 99th performance of Starlight we see at the start is the same year, but not the same time frame as Hikari isn't there yet.

My question would be, why is Karen in the performance? I got the impression that she was a bit lazy and that the arrival of Hikari is what lit a fire under her and made her take it seriously and that would upset the status quo? Unless the breaking of the status quo is Karen reaching number one with Hikaris help?

Karen was in 99th performance of starlight, yes she is lazy but we know by now that she has the talent but just didn't work hard before ep 4.

Hikari just by transferring broke the status quo, as she is shown having great talent so she would take someone's spot in the next starlight.

I'm guessing someone has to defeat Nana to completely break the loop. A more motivated Karen would be a good candidate.

This episode focusing on Nana was really nice and well done

I’ve just spent a little time going over some of the reddit discussion about this particular episode — as well as going back over a couple of the previous episodes of the show — and y’know what? I still don’t get it.

No — it’s not what this episode lays down about Nana, and her choosing to keep this recycling of events, this ‘timeloop’, of her glory days in the top, number one spot, until Hikari debuts and throws a wrench in the works, that I don’t get. That’s all fine and well.

The thing that I don’t get is the way in which the folks on reddit — and here on MAL, as well — are all talking about this show, like it is actually THEY who just came back around from a timeloop, after having learned everything about the show, and are now talking about it in such heightened and excruciating detail, that it sounds more so akin to hindsight — and not so much as current, in the now, speculation.

They make all these references to the nods and hints slathered throughout the first six episodes, that all grandly lead up to this episode’s timeloop reveal; Which I, myself, must admit to not having experienced or similarly picked up on, at all. And which, having now gone back over some of those episodes, yes — it does seem that there were a few nods and hints as to Banana-chan’s having some greater hand in all of this. And, maybe it’s just that I’m a dolt — but none of this stuff stood out to me, and none of it would have, were it not for going back to look at it all now, after this episode’s revelation.

And all of these people are treating it like it’s the best, most cleverest thing ever, and pointing to all of these little hints and nods that they portend to have been following scrutinizingly close, from the word go. And, for my part, I just don’t get it. It HAS been a relatively decent show, thus far. But, to me, there are still a few series this season that rank much higher on my list. This episode, and the revelations contained within it, really do nothing to change that estimation.

No no no. It's just usual timeloop plot we've seen in anime again and again. And also a more soft battle royale, gilded with tons of metaphor.
But tbh for some people, this season is so boring that stuff like this stands out to us. That's why it might seem that we're... overrating it. (Maybe we do, but can't be helped.)

The fact that it doesn't stand out to you means the whole metaphor works.
They (the writers) probably wrote it like this so that when this element came up, it can be a surprise.

I kinda like Tendo underestimated Banana, but damn is she good too bad she isn't that interested to be in the top stage. I guess she lacks ambition and courage.

As for the loop she creates, I guess she want to relive that starlight over and over, what a relic. I wonder how did Hikari enter the loop, maybe its the giraffe's fault, I don't trust it, it seems cagey.

Wait, what do you mean by that? did they ever hint at there being a loop in previous episodes?

They don't, explicitly
.
But during episode 2, Junna vs Karen rematch, Nana asked Hkari on a lunch, and also during dance practice she asked to pair with her.
I was thinking of why, and actually came to a suspicion of there's a more serious plot behind this, although definitely I didn't see the whole time loop thing coming. (I actually expected it to be a more mahou shoujo-esque plot.)

The previous 2 episodes had been a distraction + a bit explanation on how the battles worked, maybe.
The whole dialogues only served to confuse.
But I'm glad they actually take the more serious plot.

Damnn, now that you say that... I feel like I haven't paid attention at all.

I see what you’re saying... And, it was definitely a surprise for me. I didn’t really like it, at first. But, as I think about it, I kind of dig it a bit more. 🙂

Plot twist lol.

A time loop? Hikari disappeared for the most of the episode. It seems that was the original timeline before the first time travel. The giraffe is weird.

Nana is the antagonist? Well, a nice twist.

Holy damn, at the moment is the anime of the year, is impressing how the episode 5-6 are the past of the 1-4 and show the time-resets for the Banana wishes, and now Hikari appears and change the things.

I was really looking forward to Nana's Revue episode, and as nice as it was to see more of her, I was incredibly let down by this one. The loop was interesting, don't get me wrong, but both for the way the exposition was given and the shift of camera angles, this episode took a turn into Studio Shaft territory.... not something I'm a fan of at all. Instead of the beautiful streamlining that we'd had, it suddenly became a shift into modern art style, and the transition was nearly enough to give you mild whiplash.

The storyboarding was a stark change and sharp drop from everything we've had previously; whilst the story telling is still great, the presentation did not have nearly the same feeling we'd had until now. I hope this is just a one-off for this episode, and not something that sticks for the rest of the season.

That said, it was still nice to get more Nana. She is truly an awesome banana.

Wow, I would never have expected Banana to be this complex.

So basically, her dream is to repeat the 99th Starlight over and over again so that she can experience the same feelings she had during the first timeline. And also, to prevent the students of the academy from the anguish and deception they'll feel once they realize they can't reach the top students. Man, this episode really presented Banana as the true antagonist of the show.

I must say I was expecting "something else" to happen regarding the plot development but the time loop was truly a surprise. Not that it bothered me, I actually like the idea. And the next episode is about Hikari and probably about the way she interrupted the time loop. Looking forward to it.

Maya is the MVP of this episode. She's the sister-like type that silently observes in the shadow and takes care of the youngsters, she was the first to realize that Banana didn't feel ok with the way things are and even try to criticize and advice her at the same time.

Still doesn't explain how Nana was able to no diffed Maya in such short time, I mean if she had been that beastly, how come nobody made her the lead instead?

There's gotta be some sort of entrance exam when the girls first joined the gang and ppl should always go all out during that test, thus Nana's full potential shud have been revealed right there, but instead, she decided to play low profile all the time and miraculously, a giraffe appeared out of nowhere and grant her a wish in exchange for being OP.

That being said I still enjoyed Nana's motive behind this time loop business, thouh it's conflicted with almost everyone in the team but beautiful still. It's the perfect reflection of the naivety of young girls who believe an ideal world, but reality ain't that simple, hence her struggling ever since the "first" 99th stage performance. Nana is the type who's fine to remain in the backlight and support people, which is one of the most noble trait that rarely seen nowadays, I give her that.

That was definitely not what I was expecting, like damn,

If I understand this correctly, then everything that happened for 3/4th of this episode has already happened. Nana has been reliving the loop for god knows when until Hikari shows up which is where our first 6 episodes happen.

How Hikari managed to interfere with the loop is pretty much unknown at this point I guess. My suspicion is that the Giraffe had something to do with it.

Not what I was expecting but I'm really interested in how they're going to handle this.

For anyone confused about this episode, this analysis will probably answer any and all questions you have. Really put how intensely symbolic this series is into perspective. It doesn't have any spoilers for later episodes.

This episode was the point where I genuinely thought the plot was thickening and the show was becoming good. The ending had me internally jumping on my seat in excitement.

Daiba Nana's worries were so, so real and at the time I could relate a lot. In my honest opinion she jumped from a background character to a credible relatable secret antagonist, and wish the latter half of Starlight would just be the main duo uncovering the big mystery and facing Daiba together in a final showdown.

The most important part of the episode was that Daiba wasn't entirely selfish. In a way because of how strongly she was afraid of growing up she projected the same feelings onto others and wanted to "save them from growing up". This quasi-sociopathic twist to her character reignited my interest in the show and single-handedly contributed to me watching to the end, even though I was ultimately let down by what the show had to offer.

Rewatching this episode and damn, visually stunning and packed with a beautiful theme centering around Nana. Gotta love all those subtle close up on Nana's expression during the whole build-up which eventually led up to her major action that affected the entire chessboard. Maya still GOAT though, she tried to slap some sense to Nana but I guess it only backfired instead lmao.

That being said, were Maya and Nana the only 2 Stage Girls before the loop happened or they just off-screened everyone else' fights lol, that's something that bugged me. I think it's the former because Maya and Nana were literally burned with desire so only they could be qualified for the Revue.

This is the sort of twist I was anticipating, I didn't expect it to be a time loop exactly but I knew there had to be something going on behind the scenes. There are a ton of parallels between this and Revolutionary Girl Utena, even beyond the obvious comparisons, like fighting supernatural duels at an academy for unclear reasons.

This was a very weird episode. The timeloop shit was really confusing but I did like the whole story with Nana. Nice to see her ambitions.

Agree. Also noticed the ED was instrumental for once. Couldn't stop thinking about a certain Shioriko when Nana speaks (her turn to shine is next spring however, hopefully)
