Ofc you dont understand that imdb users watch more if you couldnt comprehend blatant facts from earlier. An average imdb user feels interested in movies/series enough to create an account and rate shows there, its safe to assume he has seen more than the average TV series watcher without an account there. Episodic is toxic to me. Time and again I've picked up highly recommended shows within genres I like only to find out the only reason it's highly rated is because it's episodic, which the heavily outnumbering US audience on MAL are accustomed to. Such as the most overrated show on MAL, Kobato. (Didn't even know it was Madhouse until I watched it unfortunately, if I did I would have avoided it) Slice-of-life should never be episodic with new side characters every episode, I consider it a genre failure point because the whole value of slice of life is interactions between recurring characters leading to character development. It can be empty as all fuck apart from that, but they need to know what the important characters are and focus on them. The whole Kobato/ Death Parade formula bullshit is really mindboggling to see so many like. I'd rather watch Doctor Phil. You CAN make it work, like Star Trek or Quantum Leap, but there needs to be overarching goals and main character development or it FLUNKS. Chobits and NGNL were alright though. |

Fully episodic might be bland but a dragged-out series with constant cliffhangers in which the episode division makes little sense in the first place is bad as well. It depends on execution: sure. But if every episode has something to tell you or simply feels like a unity by itself is certainly a plus. In my opinion many series just maintain the same status quo throughout their airing time, character interactions barely change, etc. And maybe some of those aren't episodic per se, but rather stagnate at some point for mere convenience.. @Red_Tuesday I'd never have said Kobato's problem is being episodic but rather being uninteresting as a whole (from premise to every single character), murderously slow and plainly boring in everything it attempted to do, lol. |

a lot of comedy is episodic and has little to no character development and generally the character development in a good comedy is a sign that it is going to end soon. some of my favorite shows are like that: ranma 1/2 cheers |

There's nothing inherently boring about an episodic formula. If it's got a great cast and setting it can maintain my immersion. Heck, an episodic formula can honestly be beneficial to the latter since there are different facets of the setting that shorter individual stories can showcase in detail (Ghost in the Shell: SAC is a great example of this). |

Maybe, since most anime is adapted from manga, it's up to the mangaka to come up with new, interesting stories. Anime that's original, or adapted from visual novels or light novels may be different. Then you might see some formulaic type stories, but that's true of most entertainment nowadays from movies to TV shows. I haven't gotten too bored from this yet though. |

By your logic, anything that isn't directly productive is a waste of time. I just can't enjoy an anime if the plot is going nowhere, so that's why I think watching episodic format shows are usually a waste of time. |

In general, I don't think episodic anime tend to do as well as a good job, because of a lack of character development. Episodic anime like Kino's Journey work so well, because they feature a COUNTRY, and explore it in fairly detailed way, while the characters take a backseat. I dropped Ballad with a Shinigami after the first ep, because of how much it wanted me to care about the boy and girl when there was no reason to care about them. Or sometimes the level of simplicity can still strike a small core, as in the case with Natsume's Book of Friends where every ep almost plays out like a bed time story. |

I tended to hate on/drop shows for no reason until I ended up analyzing why I gave it such a rating to later find out they were coincidentally episodic, so yes it affects my enjoyment. Though I do discriminate between episodic formats; if there are new characters introduced (Death Parade), character progression (Death Parade), if it's a comedy masterpiece (Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou), or if there's an objective and you feel the characters are drawing nearer to it (Death Parade's mystery; not like One Piece's One Piece, for example) - then I'll not be as susceptible to dropping. It is definitely a criteria that affects enjoyment for me; some people don't mind, however. I don't know if I'd use the word "boring" - in my case I get irritated / impatient / start lacking motivation to keep going. |

I wouldn't say boring, but I would say they are often less entertaining than a show with long, singular, and linear storyline and also limited by what they can accomplish with the short amount of time of a single episode to tell a whole story. I've liked both episodic and linear shows though. Even doing both at once can also work such as in the cases of Witch Hunter Robin and Kiddy Grade whose main stories start about halfway through and would definitely not have been as good were it not for the episodic half building the characters. |

In all years that I've been watching anime, this hasn't occurred to me ever, in any case for me is more entertaining if there's a new situation in every episode than just following the same thing for god knows how many. Of course, this involves a certain variety in all cases and a little bit of re-inventing itself. What do you think? Do you find episodic anime to be boring after a certain time? well, speedwagon, I have to agree with you to an extent. An episodic anime can be very interesting if each new story is engaging enough. I know the 4 episodes of Detective Conan I watched were exciting because even though each case was different, the underlying plot remained. I like stories that have some form of progression, so I dislike episodic series that have no continuity. Series where a major event occurs in an episode only to be forgetten/brushed aside in the next have no place in my heart. |

It's actually the much-praised Mushishi that lost, because although it had cool ideas it didn't have enough variety, enough room for these ideas to move. Compare it to Humanity Has Declined which does it much better. |

I have always hated episodic format, but then I watched Rick and Morty and I found out why the episodic format is usually not well received. In Rick and Morty, the episodes generate suspense, you think something big might happen (like a death of an important character or the destruction of the world) But in other episodic series like Kekkai Sensen this suspense doesn't exist. Everyone is happy and you know that when the episode finishes, it will be just the same as the beginning. Other case is Joker Game. The problem with this one is that (almost) every episode had different characters, and that made me don't give a fuck if one of them died or something. (But JG had 3-4 eps that were masterpieces) |

That is a very interesting question, so I regret my inability to give as interesting an answer. It depends entirely on flexibility, direction, and characters. Cowboy Bebop, Space Dandy, Golden Boy, Nichijou, and The World God Only Knows are examples of episodic shows I really enjoyed. On the other hand, watching To Love-ru was exhausting and painful after about 5 episodes. I really shouldn't have watched it to the end. I also found that Sakamoto Desu Ga? did a very poor job as an eposodic series, since it told only one joke (that was the same every time) 3 times an episode. You then have shows that fall into the awkward middle ground like Pokemon. The formula had just enough variation to keep the target audience (children) interested. It did not however do anything particularly well. I would argue that another show in this category would be Jojo Stardust Crusaders. It's formula wasn't uninteresting, and there was enough variation to keep it interesting... if you watch it as a weekly series. Stardust Crusaders is not particularly fun to binge, unlike the other Jojo arcs. |
