| Nope. While edginess is normally a bad thing, it can be used to benefit a series when presented right. As other have mention, hellsing is a perfect example of this. The show honestly wouldn't be quite as fun if it weren't for all the over the top violence and buckets of gore poured on every action scene. None of it's at all necessary and it does nothing to really add to story,art, etc., but it adds to the series charm due to how silly it is. It's the same idea behind most slasher films. Alternatively, there's cases like Fate/Zero where it has it's needlessly edgy, but it's used sparingly and genuinely makes the scenes that are, more effective. In both of these cases though, the series had substance to them besides this, which is what it comes down too. That and how it's presented. |

| It ultimately depends on the show and how it uses its "edgy" content. Something like Hellsing Ultimate builds itself around being extreme and over the top and thus the insane amount of gore feels natural. However, if a show tries to be serious by showcasing extreme content at every given opportunity it fails as it is then hard to take the show seriously (eg: Mirai Nikki, Tokyo Ghoul). It comes off as try-hard and exploitative. That being said a serious show which balances out its edgy content, handles it maturely and in a realistic way can still be taken seriously (eg: Texhnolyze, Berserk et al). |
