Another great episode, and some excellent closure to the bullying arc, even if Takagi clearly didn't feel even the vaguest notion of guilt for her actions. At least the others did show some sincerity, which certainly makes the teacher's life slightly easier. It was also a cute interaction between Rei and Hina at the end, even if Rei vastly underestimated his contribution in helping Hina (not as though that's surprising considering the person he is and the issues he still has).

finally bullying arc ends... that thing about "teach" and "raise" kinda got me. I used to hear that all the time when I'm in junior high and highschool but I always thought about it being a pretty words, but when I see it in this arc I feel kinda bad for thinking like that back then, lol.

will we be seeing more Shogi now, or the bullying arc really will be over here? since I still havent see any real conclusion for the main bullying girl. I personally hope they wouldn't prolonged this more than necessary... I'm eager to see Kiriyama vs that white haired guy already xD

Akari really has nothing she should be sorry about. So Megumi has grown disillusioned with life then. Its nice to see that Hinata and Akari seem to better after that ordeal. It's good that the school got serious about dealing with the bullying within the class. After such an experience i can see why Hina doesn't want to forgive them. Its nice to hear Chiho is doing so well in both education and with her family. The three step method sure was effective. The sun must have been that relaxing for Rei to fall asleep as well. Its nice that after the darkness that Hina and her classmates are able to have fun together. Though Rei didn't help Hina resolve her crisis directly he did listen to her express her worries though not to mention to go find her in Kyoto as well.

When I read this arc in the manga, it left a bad taste in my mouth and I think I felt a lot like Hina felt in the middle of this episode, "It's over but it's not." Even after the arc fully ended with Chiho's letter and Rei's unneeded apology, I found myself continuously hating on that damn bully and her mom. I wonder if it's just my pettiness.....

The Chiho letter scene was great. Is anyone else hoping we'll see when Hina visits Chiho? This show has some of the most realistic bullying. Takagi hasn't instantly changed her ways like some lame After School Special episode. The other girls in the class have pretty much owned up to being afraid. Their contrition scene was very believable and Hina's relief to have friends again was convincing.

This has to be one of the very best arcs I've seen in any anime show. From the acting, soundtrack, realistic portrayal of the characters and a fully satisfying conclusion, I'll fondly remember this arc for a very long time. =')

Mr Kokuku continues to be an excellent teacher as he interrogated Megumi over her actions. Her reflection of life itself sounds so bleak and miserable and it shows us as to just how unaware she is of her actions that affected Chihio and Hina. Not only that, but she also lacks the remorse for her actions too. For now, her apology is VERY hollow and it's really good to see Mr Kokuku battling onwards, trying to find a way to get some common sense into Megumi's head. I really admire his dedication. =)

Chiho's letter to Hina left choking up a lot of tears. From arriving at the specialist centre for the first time, herself and her parents all looking disheartened after what Chiho went through at school, her path towards recovery was long, but as shown, it has become very successful. Just seeing Chiho getting along with the animals, communicating with the teachers and other adults at the centre, it made me smile as to how well she was recovering. She wants to meet up with Hina during the summer holidays as well, which make Hina, and myself, shed tears down our cheeks. T_T

Rei was definitely hard on himself when he said that he didn't to anything to help, but Hina was there to snap him back to his senses. He did a lot to help Hina during her darkest moments during the whole arc and being there for her helped her resolve and she was determined to succeed, to which she did. Her smile at the end was simply precious. =3

It'll be very difficult to even match this arc, but either way, I'm still hyped about the upcoming Rei Vs Souya Shogi match, so I do hope is happens soon! =D

The bully girl probably had a dysfunctional upbringing/her mom is super cynical and raised her to think like that but also having zero empathy/compassion and blaming your own wrongdoings on society instead of taking responsibility for them is a sign of being a sociopath.

Not sure if we'll ever revisit Takagi again but it interestingly brings up the question of whether people like this are even redeemable/able to be re-educated, even as children.

This arc was good. I applaud the new teacher. He dealt with that very well. I never would have thought of taking the bullies right out of the class and having the class speak as a whole rather than individually. Very smart. But most importantly, I applaud Hina. For a 13 year old, she's surprisingly strong.

I understand what you mean, and why you're frustrated, but in actuality, there is no way you can get through a girl like Takagi, even if you tackle her to the ground and use force on her, I know this because my sister acts the same exact way like her, not understanding the meaning of compassion, not bothering to even try because she feels there's no point.

As soon as I saw Takagi tell me her "reason" for bullying and for acting the way she did, all I saw was my little fifteen year old sister who blames society constantly for her misfortunes. Sad to say, but these type of people are almost impossible to deal with.

Thinking, "No one understands me, so there's no point"

Some people will never learn, unfortunately, and it was even a miracle that Takagi just stopped and gave up eventually.

----------

As for me, I loved the way this arc concluded, and I loved how the bullying matter was handled professionally and seriously. It was very realistic. I honestly believe more teachers should use this way of intervention.

The bullying arc all together has become one of my favorite arcs of all time, I loved every minute of it.

Oh My God! This might be the one of the best episode as of yet!
SHAFT really very good at these things! especially to Director Shinbou!
That Takagi bully bitch got a lot of sermon from Kokubu-sensei! Great Job on handling that bitch!
All the class spoke the truth of the darkness that's happening!
Momo so cute with those 2 cats sleeping on top of her!
Chiho sent a very heartwarming and lots of hope letter to Hina!
OMG! Kiriyama is in love! Hina is glowing faintly to Kiriyama's eyes!
That's a lot of Tangerines from Shimada-san!
Kiriyama's totally wrong, He was of pure help to Hina!
5/5!

Although final moments of the episode were truly heartwarming, I preferred scenes featuring the aftermath of Hinata's hardships. I quite liked the fact that the substitute home room teacher did not merely act with an intention to solve the situation, but also had a deeper incentive. Not only to educate but also to raise (which is an exceedingly difficult task). After such a heavy realisation, Chiho's letter certainly paved the way for a charming ending.

Aren't the girls she forgave just ones that chose to not associate themselves with her in fear of being the next victim by the bullies? They're not the ones that bullied her. They were weak-willed, but I don't think they had bad intentions and their apology was sincere.

As for the true culprits; Hina told the teacher she doesn't think she'll be able to forgive them. Because their apology sounded insincere, and they're not being punished for it; especially for what they did to Chiho.

It seems like its over, but I don't blame Hina for not forgiving her she didn't seem sincere about the apology. I see also Chiho is doing well and Hina has found new friends to bake with. That is one tough girl and i think the girl should've been suspended though, she got off lightly. Rei and Hina moment was cute and was about closing the chapter I guess and to show how much they grew closer.

Great ep.

Thank god it finished. I feel similar to Eupho's S2 compared to S1 about this so far, a seemingly well made damn long arc that everyone seems to like but I don't. I feel emotionally detached and rather disillusioned

Having said that this episode itself was rather good, one of the few ones in which I did feel emotional in the whole arc

Difference with Eupho is that that didn't have 9 more episodes to salvage the ship back up while this does and I have faith in them. Strange to say 'salvage' when this wasn't by any means bad but just in my perspective

I still think this bullying arc is pretty good. I like the new teacher a lot. And at this point, partially because it's taken up so much time. I'm curious to see where the arc goes. But have we completely abandoned the shogi for slice of life here? I mean maybe it's just because of that mid season break. But it feels like so long since we've seen a shogi game being played. Regardless I liked the final exchange between Kiriyama and Hina a lot. I feel as though the series has played up his feelings for her a bit much. But it was still pretty cute. Ready for the series to move forward with it already.

So I accidentally watched episode 36 before this one ... oops. Well, luckily the material was completely different so I guess it didn't matter that much :P This episode was as good as usual, reading Chiho's letter really hit me with the feels. Seems like Takagi still has some work to do with the teacher, but seeing other classmates reach out to Hina after everything else was good to see. Resolved mostly with of course still things to do, but hey, there was definite progress this episode. I definitely thought those other girls were assigned to a group together because their names all started with "K" lol XD

This Is what I want out of a slice of life. This could have been any company besides my favorite and If they were to deliver a message like this I would have still gave this episode a 10.

It;s so amazing to see the bully stop. I don't feel like she's over her ways but she definitely knows that she got caught.

Having the other teachers come in and handle the other students was a great way to weed out the truth and take away fear. How did Shaft manage to rid a problem with such ease and with a message to the reader In one episode? Sheesh.

Rei and Hina make a miracle like scene every time they are together and It just leaves me smiling.

Aah, man... this was one very special episode, probably the best one so far... can I give it 11/10 pretty please?

But really, Shaft has surpassed themselves again (is that even possible?). To deliever such emotional episode yet one that was very natural and not forced in any way, it's like a small miracle. First they managed to fit in very touching epilogue for Chiho and then they did that great scene of holding hands with Kei and Hina - it was really staple of slice-of-life in its truest form.

[...]

The last ep (or was it?) was probably visually more stunning with its unique game of light and shadow - I can agree on that (and I liked it too) - but this one was even better in giving us heartwarming closure with sense of hope and promise of better days, at least for a while. In a way, it managed to do several things at once yet didn't try to push it to your face and I can appreciate that they let you to interpret it. But mostly it felt real, true to life in its purest and also bittersweet form, developing the characters further, showing that one can overcome any problem in time. Fleeting yet very real happiness, a new dawn for both of them if you will. And to see someone shining is one of japanese way of saying 'to fall in love'. It's only fitting that Kiriyama's having those thoughts now - another way of suble storytelling Shaft is so good at.

As I'm saying, the episode was good on so many levels and seeing the ratings up there I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who thought the same while watching it. Yet I also understand that some people tend to analyze things more, some give in more to their feelings, some can appreciate the craftsmanship or direction and so on... it really depends on your personal preferences that governs what you enjoy and how you percieve things - and this is even more true with this anime because it tries to reflect many aspects of ordinary life.

Agree about so many of your points. I think this episode masterfully shows the art and storytelling in this show. And even though she isn't, Hina became the protagonist of the show, if only for this little arc. I like this girl. And I like how Rei is growing to like her and yet still not realizing it at this point.

Finally, a satisfying closure of the Bullying Arc. Against all odds, Hina kept on fighting.

That letter is really heartfelt and warming for Hina.

I guess Madao-sensei really changed things around that school. It only took that teacher for the whole school to react. I still didn't like their ignorance and their "see no evil, hear no evil" move about bullying within their own doorstep. It also took that homeroom teacher ehh? Still no pity for her.

Takagi really doesn't see anything wrong with what she did. Disgusting. Hopefully, she's able to face the facts that she was entirely in the wrong here. That was the most insincere apology ever. She doesn't have the right to blame the world for her problems. If anything, her pain is self-inflicted. I feel no sympathy for someone like her. It was at least gratifying seeing the look of terror on the faces of some of the bullies. It's fine to never forgive them, Hina. I may be beating a dead horse here, but they don't deserve your forgiveness. At least it sounds like Chiho is happier. Rei getting so embarrassed about seeing Hina sleep was so cute. It's really funny that he ended up dozing off himself. Now I want cookies. It's so sweet that Hina was invited out to make cookies. I can understand the fear those other girls were fearing. Hina has every right to get angry at Rei. The blockhead doesn't even realize how much of a help he was. Dumbass.
