I've got to admit, that a lot of what happened in this episode just kind of was lost on me. It just wasn't that interesting to me, I guess. Sucks that the Giant Hornet was wiped out, and I know that Squealer's clan is becoming more and more dangerou, but it's honestly hard for me to care too much.

So many parallels to our own world and history can be drawn from this episode alone. I really like that. It's interesting. Sure you got some of that in the previous episodes as well, but it was more obvious in this one.

Something seems very off about Saki... I'm sure it has to do with losing Maria and returning to the village and the growing pains of trying to live daily life after all she's been through but her personality seems very strange. Maybe she needs a sudden jolt - which seems to be whats building up. Hearing Squeelers stories, and then maybe something with Maria next episode?

I couldn't careless about the casts but Squealer... He's manipulative, and very intelligent compared with other exospecies, or I can say he's smarter than his "gods". Wonder what his real motive is..

I honestly feel threatened by the queerats and squealer especially. All this deceit, this technological advancement... Seems like the "gods" are gonna be facing a rebellion.

And as another poster put it: "Yokumaru makes me feel uneasy." That is how I feel EXACTLY. His flowery language, his facial expressions. Yokumaru feels like a bottomless pit of scheming. I feel like I could see exactly what Kiroumaru is, I like him much better indeed.

Another tense episode despite the timeskip. I don't know wy but I expected Squealer to blackmail Saki with his knowledge of the destiny of Maria/Mamoru (i'm expecting them to make an appearance soon in some form or another btw).

Saki grew up beautiful but I don't know how wise. Let's see how she handles whats coming up.

I was really surprised to come here and see so many say they either didn't follow what was going on or simply didn't care. I both understood it perfectly (as far as I'm aware, at least) and found it absolutely engaging.

Shinsekai Yori proves once again why the monster rats are the most interesting part of its already engrossing universe. This episode sat me in the seat of the humans' perspective, watching as their creation, their mutants they bred, tore each other apart. The scene with Kiroumaru and Squealer confronting each other in front of the council felt like watching as a god humors the shameless bickering between two divisions of its creation quarreling. The idea that one of the two divisions (very obviously the Robber Flies, TBH) was scheming and deceiving their gods evoked a sense of paranoia and betrayal a god might feel at the realization his creation is very likely in the process of a coup d'etat, rebelling against their creator(s).

In short, I understood for one brief episode why the monster rats call the humans "gods," and I felt for one brief episode it had might as well be true. Putting us in the perspective of so-called "gods" moderating over their creation: that's a theme I don't believe I've ever seen in an anime.

I was pretty dang surprised by the timeskip, though, but I suppose it came at the perfect time (no pun intended).

Another time skip and now politics between the rats. Surprisingly interesting/engaging to me. Squealer does not seem trustworthy at all. And then that cliffhanger ending... Hmm.

Also, the voice of the masked guy in the council is definitely the same guy who did Tomoya in Clannad.

Robber Fly was clearly going to win. A very classic case of wit over brawn. The tiny rats cannot be trusted. Satoru's claim that they were becoming the next humans is becoming true, as they rapidly adopt all of their technology.

I suppose it will only be a short matter of time before they're developing weapons of mass destruction and the world repeats itself with a giant population drop.

Anyway, so Saki and Satoru fell out eh? Guess the sex wasn't satisfying enough.

How can you people ignore how evil he obviously is?! Ep 17.

Plot: Years go by and Saki is now a hot twenty 20. She currently takes care of growing Queer-rats and works with a group monitoring them. She and Satoru have had some rough times but are still friends. But danger is on the horizon as tensions between Kiromarou's clan and Squeara's clan begin to have disputes, the latest is a death of a small clan.

A battle is waged with terrifying results but Squeara's group managed to stay out of it. And then Kiromarou's group got wiped out.

Character: Squeara you sneaky little bastard. Sowing discord and screwing with Kiromaru. He's certainly gotten more wiley. Especially that talk of the old ways with soldiers dying because they are told while his new way opens the door for individuality. And look at how he's using it. Even the queer rats weaponry have become better. The gear up for war seems closer.

Saki is steadily learning to be more afraid. Satoru seems to be a bit more on the ball on the trouble Squeara represents.

The council was an odd group. A boisterous asshole, the masked guy, Evil Granny, and Stuck up Ethics lady. But all suffered from human arrogance in thinking that meer rats could challenge them. THough Granny shows her stuff at nearly catching Squeara.

Animation/sound: The battle was fierce but man, nothing was as tense as that interrogation of Kiroumaru and Squeara. What the hell happened between those two.

And that fade to gray at the end with Satoru: great bombshell moment.

And the new ED is here. I quite like it. It suits the new adult moment of Saki and Satoru at the moment. And is definitely more haunting with Maria's floating. As if she's a ghost.

5/5. A time skip and a prelude to tragedy.

Oh boy, good episode. I think Satoru would look better if his hair was a bit shorter lol. Shame that he and Saki fell out though :( Anyway the politics between the queerats was really interesting, how did Kiroumaru lose?! It seems as though Maria and Mamoru have been involved in this ... I guess if they had "gods" supporting them, the Robber Fly alliance would surely win. Squealer (or Yakomaru) has definitely gotten smarter, and it seems as though he's making a big play now to overthrow the Giant Hornets. Plus, where's all that info he's getting coming from?! The fact that they'd lose with guns and such shows how powerful Kiroumaru is, but clearly that wasn't to last. We've got the Goats and Spiders and what their motives are as well. Either way, the intrigue was really good this episode, looks like we're building up towards the final arc now :D

I don't like that timeskips in this show are utilized as a method of getting away with not explaining things. Like what happened that motivated Saki to have a change of heart from thinking the village's actions are evil to becoming resigned that it's necessary.

The colony names are a bit confusing. I got the Giant Hornet, Kiromaru's and probably the strongest in terms of manpower and Robber Fly, Yakomaru's where autocracy is discarded in favor of democracy. I hope I'm not expected to memorize the other smaller ones too. Interesting that Giant Hornet army was annihlated, Yakomaru's very shrewd so he probably was scheming something.

The timeskipped world is built well to induce deeper analysis on the nature of the queerats and society etc but it's erased a lot of the mysteriousness/wonder of the child arcs that made the show so compelling. So far, that is.

What a great episode.
-Looks like Saki has become part of the system. You gotta do what you gotta do.
-That entire trial was really cool. I didn't know who to believe, though I was definitely leaning towards Kiroumaru.
-This episode highlights better than ever that the Monster Rats think of the humans as gods, and that the humans really are like gods to these things. It makes me think of those tales where Greek gods talk to the Greeks like a king would talk to a peasant...or something like that.
-If Kiroumaru is the honest one here, I love his archetype. The honest, loyal, honorable, samurai-esque type of character.
>That twist at the end.
Woah.
This episode was something else. Really good stuff.
This show has added so much more complexities. The politics of this world is so interesting.

That's a fair point, but they only had 25 episodes to work with. Though I haven't read the original 2008 novel, so I don't know how much it differentiates in terms of the timeskip, but maybe it's better explained in there.

Its getting kinda boring and i dont like the time skip,it feels like so much happened especially in what,10 years?yet we dont know

Also i didnt think shun had actually died until a few eps ago, they made his death NOT impactful at all & I genuinely thought he was coming back but here we are,ep 17 having only just figured out he died in a way i don’t understand bc i had no idea what he was doing.
Also i wish they expanded on his character and situation more so maybe even i knew he died I would’ve been more attached to him rather than see him as a stand in. sigh it feels like im complain a lot even though i dont mean to.

I feel like it went from one point “how to use powers/tricking the “system-village/finding about her sister” to “here, the colonies want to take over so enjoy!” and it feels rather off.

Oh wow, a rat wars.

Which army belongs to which colony confuses me. I assume the rats that uses shotgun belong to the Giant Hornet because it looks like they're the one who wins in the end. But I don't think they're advanced enough to invent a shotgun, if it's from the Robber Fly colony it's plausible because they've already built a building made of concrete not to mention that Yakomaru is a shady one.

It's weird to see Kiroumaru smirk at that interrogation. I wonder if he wants to conquers all the queerat as well. It's really a bad red herring if it's purpose is to make the viewers believe that there's a chance Kiroumaru might be the culprit, a good red herring wouldn't need to distort Kiroumaru's personality.

And I thought he was a calm guy but in the end he's just a hot-headed arrogant beast.

12 years timeskip. 26 years old Saki and Satoru look really good. The whole inquiry scene was very intense. The humans really seem to be gods to them with the Queerats having to submit forms for each little thing and them watching over their waging war like a spectacle. But the humans are being obtuse as well, not seeing how suspicious and scary they've become. The Giant Hornet army being annihilated was quite the shock, hope Kiroumaru is alright. And I prefer the previous ED by far, it was amazing. Though the visuals in the new one are pretty great.

This was a mid-tier episode. Firstly, I already miss the Wareta Ringo ED. I get why they changed the ED and especially given the sentiments with it by using Maria's song but meh, I'm not a fan of that too much in comparison to the other one. The actual episode takes place after a major timeskip where Saki's now 26. I'm not a fan of these kind of timeskips since they aren't really cohesive for me. It's just stuff happens, then timeskip, then more stuff happens and then timeskip after years of barely much happening except them growing up. Given the situations and chaos at hand, these timeskips just feel too convenient for the story progression where you have long phases of stuff happening to be cut out. The war in particular here doesn't really interest me either. Still, I did like seeing adult Saki and how she's matured as a person compared to how she and the others were when they were younger.

Wow, trying to keep up with the names was very hard. I think I got the most important (Squealer is scheming something, he started war against Kiromaru's army and they somehow managed to destroy them), but I hope the rest wasn't too important.

I can't say I like the timeskips, it feels very abrupt and like so many things have changed without them being explained. Last episode left us with a specific plot point and this episode completely threw it away to focus on something else, that's a weird way to handle things. It is interesting and all but I think it'd be much easier to follow if the show actually gave a closure to its plot points before starting something else. Not to mention the atmosphere completely changed, part of what made Shinsekai Yori interesting to me was to see children/young teens in a dangerous world full of corrupted adults, but now they're adults too and parts of the system... And we don't really know why they're even part of that system when previous episodes were heading at something completely different.
I still really like the show but I hope upcoming episodes will be good enough to make up for what I mentioned.
To be fair I find Squealer to be an interesting character so I don't mind for the show to focus on him, but it's still frustrating to switch focus like that without much information.
