I was pretty keen going into it because of its lasting reputation and recommendations from friends, but I've actually found myself rather bored by it, I just haven't found the story or characters all that interesting. It may be due to the fact that I've watched a lot of shows like this that came after it and were perhaps influenced by it, so I've watched it past its prime; I wouldn't say it's aged badly, just that I've watched it too late.

I don't think Utena's the most accessible work so I don't particularly blame you for that, but once you get 'into' it, I think it's absolutely, undeniably one of the best that this medium offers. Someday I plan on writing about it but that's what I've been saying for 3 years now, so who knows :0). I'd be happy to talk about certain details or episodes with you. Just shoot me a message if you ever feel up for it.

Haibane is lovely. I'm sure you'll like it.

I was reading Neverland a while ago and got some odd 17 chapters in and was enjoying it. The adaptation has been really promising so far. I have no complaints yet, but let's see. In terms of other things I've seen, I enjoyed Hikaru no go. It wasn't anything core shattering or masterpiece tier, but it was so damn fun. I got frustrated with some parts but overall, given my disinterest with the medium as a whole (for the past like 6 months, lol), it was refreshing to get into something and enjoy it. Other than that, I can't really recall anything noteworthy. I did read a lot of really great novels and watch some brilliant films but I'm not sure if those interest you similarly.

Hey! I'm so glad you ended up liking it as much as you did. Feel free to stalk my list anytime if it can help you find something you love/find endearing.

What else have you been watching?

It's so good that I can't even rate it.

I had a smile on my face the whole time I spent reading this. You definitely "get it" now. It's the hardest thing to put into words but when someone has that epiphany about art and its significance, the telltale signs are usually there. What you're describing is precisely that. Something that many people would, unfortunately, be ignorant to their entire lifetime. I think you could only have that revelation when you yourself become a creator of any sort. Whether that be writing, drawing, painting, making music, sculpting, acting; it doesn't matter what it is, as long as it's an artistic expression that requires birthing something new through your own efforts. It's like tapping into a greater space. Something that's too humbling for any one person to make a claim of, yet it's the source that every creator willingly submits to. And it's this very thing that has led to me rejecting the idea of art being pigeonholed into ratings and consensus. The very act of subjecting artistic expression to something insignificant like numbers and ratings is beyond misguided, it's outright toxic.

If I had the choice, none of my reviews would include numbers. And if there were a better method of databasing how an individual feels about certain artistic endeavors, I would do away with numbers altogether. But unfortunately, it's still a necessary evil. But not so that you can showboat your "taste" to others, but more of a way to express a discernable difference between the arts itself. Before you cast away numbers altogether, I suggest giving this a read as well, it's my philosophy on rating and why it's still necessary despite the epiphany we both share regarding art:

The idea is not to value the number, it's the value the art. So basically, it's an acknowledgment of the media in question and not caring what arbitrary number you assign. Notice how I have lower rated titles in my top 100 for example. 6/10s and 7/10s are just as common as higher rated scores. Because to me, a true understanding of art significance comes with accepting that numbers have nothing to do with individual affinities had towards the art itself.

But that's enough of my rambling, for now, let me just congratulate you once again for making that transition. It's something to cherish. It should go without saying but how you consume and digest art in storytelling media will have an interesting paradigm shift. Like truly seeing things for the first time. All the pretense that was previously there just washes away. If you would like to discuss this in further detail or even VC in the future, you can always PM me if you like.

To a new year and for truly seeing art without limitations! :) Free cheers!

I never watch videogame anime adaptations, because they all end up shit. Castlevania is the only exception, and that's not even an anime.
