Good episode. The outcome of the duel was predetermined and also expected, still it's nice to see that thorfinn still has emotions.

Thorfinn just gets stronger and stronger. I think he was provoked on purpose and it might be that askeladd was not sure of his victory. Yeah he has great experience behind but he was no match for his father and Thorfinn obviously walks in his father's stepps getting better and actually stronger.

I thought the same but here I see no one had mention this until I read your post,to me I thought he was provoked on purpose not really to be manipulative but mostly to secure his win I think Askakadd was scared of Thorfinn he saw how skilled Thorfinn is and was not certain of victory so he kept putting it off, what was strange to me is how the people who was watching the fight did not find it at least a bit strange of how Thorfinn was verbally attacked in the middle of a duel then to praise Askeladd on a complete win is be on me.

I hope that slave girl can save our main character from the darkness of his heart
I guest the king made a foolish move sending the prince to the war without experience
so our main character is still an idiot he knows he can't defeat him but he still follows him and he looks slave now (or he just confident to himself that he can defeat him but he lost his temper and lost)
he can just escape (if he escae the storyline would be trash so I guess it's for the best (but deep inside me I want him to escape and go to his parent and leave a normal life))

Yeah right? Thorfinn gains a lot of experience right now, despite being short and young and a naive child of six years old back in the days. He is stronger than majority warriors out there and he has no fear whatsoever. He had to survive like a dog in coldness and hunger and lots of physical pain.

The anime is good but I advise people to read the Manga afterwards because it's worth it. Thorfinn changes a lot in the future and I want people to get to know a reborn Thorfinn 👍

I think I will read the manga, waiting for an episode every week is really hard to do these days even though it has other shows that I like shows like this one is a dime in a dozen.I do agree with you on the whole Thorfinn vs Askeladd just think if he did not use that cheap trick to win what would the end game be I know that battles may go that way people will say things to throw you off your game but just the fact that Askeladd had to use such methods says a lot and its amazing to see so much people on the forum praise the fight without even acknowledging that blows my mind but maybe I am reading too much into it you know...

Thorfinn has grown stronger and improved his fighting skills, but he must learn to control his emotions if he wants to defeat Askeladd. He is a slave of his desire for revenge.

Why is Askeladd keeping Thorfinn alive? It seems to me that he's submitting Thorfinn to some kind of training, but I wonder on which purpose.

I don't understand why Vinland is so idealized as to think there are no wars or slaves. Wherever humans go they will take these with them.

Thorfinns got GUTS! He still has a ways to go though. He is letting his ego and pain from the past hold him back.

I really kinda like Askeladd though. He's actually helped Thorfinn grow into quite the warrior.

Oh, trouble is here. Is feels like the past 8 episodes (this one included) were just setting up for what would probably make the rest of the story. With now Thorfinn capable of walking across the battlefield, so many political figures made an appearance, even the rampaging dude from the first seconds of episode one. He kind of looks like Askeladd.

It seems that we have new characters.

I thought Thorfinn would fare a little better in the duel this time, but I guess he's not quite up to par yet. Even so, Askeladd's character is pretty interesting. He's not exactly an enemy of Thorfinn, but he can't really be called an ally either. It'll be interesting to see how things turn out between the two of them.

Great duel between Thorfin and Askeladd. I know he's a bad dude but Askeladd has this charisma about him that makes him hard to dislike. Very well written character.
I felt a strong sense of irony when Thorfin was lecturing the slave girl, too blind to see he is a slave to vengeance himself!

Thorfinn finally got another rematch and despite losing again, it's not because of his lack of skills anymore but it was his lack of mental fortitude that has led to his defeat. If he continues to be a slave to his past, he'll never beat Askeladd.

Hordeland looks like she's going to be Thorfinn's potential love interest. That transition from her to that mysterious Valkyric-looking warrior overlooking the area was really awesome.

It's time to raid London!

A good episode, we got the long awaited duel between Thorfinn and Askeladd - though there is is still a gap in skill. Thorfinn is still guided by revenge for his father death, which causes his to lose focus and fail.

Though Hordaland did remind me a bit of Thorfinn's mother with her looks which kind of confused me for a second.

I feel kind of disappointed with how they left the slave girl. You can tell by the way they ended it that she is probably not going to reappear in the series despite them building her character up a bit and having that interaction with Thorfinn. If he helped her escape slavery, it might seem cliche to an extent, but it would show his progression a character becoming like his father and it would be also a potential romantic interest that would pull him away from war as it did to his father.

It wouldn't have to be too much, maybe just have her become a companion and not even love, but understanding the words and actions his father meant would be really beautiful and show his change as a character. It would also help him become a better person if he helped the slave girl, though during 1000 it wasn't as obvious to sympathize too much and see it as wrong.

I just feel like this direction would have a lot of potential in terms of character development and the way she built up leaves me feeling empty knowing they didn't have anything else come of it.

Didn't think he'd win yet. Even though without getting totally schooled in the mind game category, maybe he would've actually won. Or maybe Askeladd wasn't even trying very hard.

He's a slave to Askeladd and he doesn't even realize it. Sad.

Seems like there is still lots of practice and experience needed before Thorfinn can exact his revenge for his father. Bit weird but I kinda respect Askeladd for not getting rid of Thorfinn and instead wait for him to be strong enough to defeat him.

Nothing much has changed for Askeladd he seems to be the same man the day Thors died

This duel was interesting even so that Askeladd didn't kill Thorfinn amusing to such because he's teaching him a few things since he's still unmatched for Askeladd and I gotta say that he really has a lot to improve on to finally kill him

Thors appeared in Thorfinn's eyes and remembered his quote from before that anyone doesn't have enemies and remembered Vinland, The King already has a plan to execute, which seems to be a bloody fight.

Thorfinn is so damn stupid, without plot shield he should've died already because of that. The fighting scenes in this anime are quite good, but overall the story is kinda boring imo.

Thorfinn is very capable, he's agile, lethal, adaptable and simply a powerful warrior for his age, but he's prone to psychological attacks, something which Askeladd executed perfectly tow in the duel. He still needs a vast amount of battle experience and combat skills to even be a fair match to Askeladd.

This ep is a downtime for the pirates and Thorfinn, a winter full of just feasting, resting and fun. Whereas for Thorfinn it's just security shift after security shift, but it's nice that he gets to talk to someone, especially someone his age who thought she felt something common between them. Not gonna lie, Hordaland is the prettiest girl in this show so far though.

Better than the previous few episodes, pretty simple but well-executed for the most part. Thorfinn might have grown a lot stronger with all his training and mindless killings in battle but Askeladd's got years of experience and wit under his belt and that showed here. Thorfinn's lacking the maturity and composure to keep himself calm when Askeladd intentionally was messing with Thorfinn with snarky remarks about his dad. Thorfinn's just too easy to manipulate and mess with in situations like these and it showed. He'll have to overcome that and has got a lot to learn with time to get anywhere close to 'avenging' his father through that. Having no control over his emotions and being pushed around like that would only end up with him failing miserably like he did here. At least there is some clear progress shown compared to how he was when he was way younger.

But beyond that, the writing I felt was stronger too than the past few episodes and more nuanced in other areas too, especially when it came to Askeladd's character alongside Thorfinn's conversation with Hordaland. Thorkell himself was already quite the presence at the end there to act as the cliffhanger for the more action-packed next episode. That cut with him did look sick though, better than most of the fighting-related animation cuts I've seen so far from this series to this point. Looked sick to say the least. Also, beyond the Thorfinn-Hordaland conversation being solid, the directing of the whole scene was stellar too. WIT's not been at their best with the fight animation early on but they have had scenes like these where I thought the directing and composition really shined.

Askeladd is a fricking manipulator, holy crap. And he's good at it..
You can literally see he was having trouble with Thorfinn (even though he wasn't seriously trying to win)

"Everyone is a slave to something."
A really meaningful quote. Everyone is a slave to something - everyone will waste away at something, chipping away at their life for that very thing. For that thing, they would ignore others, ignore their needs, all for that one thing.
It's really telling of the human soul, and how we always want something.
Vikings are a slave to war. Gorm was a slave to money. Thorfinn to revenge.
