The main set back of being a sports anime is that it can't help being repetitive, so much so that you slowly start to wish the main character/main team will loose. I guess its the same as how in battle shounen you already know the protagonist is going to win. The crying bit is wasted on me too since Ive seen it so many times after every single match in this show.

Its still above average compared to most shows airing I'll give it that.

I'm not sure what you're basing "repetitive" on..The fact that they won? Have you not watched the past two seasons? The road to winning this championship was paved through a lot of losing and learning how to play as a team. New strategies and intricacies to their style of play were learned and developed every match, different people stepped up at different times when the team needed them, and finally here they were able to put everything together and inch out a win, in a VERY intense, well written, and flawlessly executed match.

I don't see how there's any amount of repetition, it's not like they just go out and win every time Bleach style. I thought they did a good job of making us believe they could very easily lose.

Pretty sure they were using the technique Hokuo beat them with at the regional competition.

Watched episode 16 to 19, despite 16 being a recap. Those episodes were simply amazing and now we're off to the Individual Tournament, I'm surprised that they wrapped up the Team Championship Finals so quickly, it literally only started in episode 05. Hopefully, they'll be able to wrap up the Individual High School Championship by the end of it. I mean they have 6 more episodes to cover 15+ chapters or more I think....can't remember lol.

I agree. And may I just add that this time the "Chihayafuru" card wasn't even included, so we didn't get the typical "Chihayafuru" comeback moment. Instead, they shifted the focus to the reader and other unpopular cards. And getting introduced to other cards for me was refreshing.

best line was the coach of Fujisaki telling Rion that there was noone on their team that could beat chihiya. And that she had a major advantage and still lost.

Just incredible.
As i was reading through the latest Shingeki no Kyojin thread, someone wrote "Best Anime of the Year", and soon someone else disagreed saying that Chihayafuru is a bit better.

I had never heard about Chihayafuru before, so i checked it out and im reeaaallly happy that i did. I guess i should thank that guy, since i ended up watching season 1 and all episodes of season 2 in the last two days.

The words Taichi said at the "luck of draw" and the emotions which build up through the whole episode ... amazing

So glad that I waited and watched whole match in one go!
Too intense!

Even though it was quiet obvious that Mizusawa would win this time around I just could not get the feeling of "what if not" out.

That's how you write! Make even the obvious things thrilling!

Wow agree with everyone else, that was emotional and tense, with the least bit of useless flashback and cheering shout :) It doesn't change the fact that it was an asspull though. How can the opponents that were dominating them lose to them at the end? Even more so with Chihaya's injury. I'll tell you one simple thing about injury, pain, nerve, and brain. When we're hurt, our nerve will send the information to our brain, and there is this thing I forgot what it's called, will automatically force our body to stop to prevent the pain from getting worse, so what Chihaya did there was super unbelievable and fake, she got even more faster than before with her pain, it's totally unrealistic, especially when that's a wrist because it would be very pain to move your wrist. Taichi and Nikuman's victory is less unbelievable compare to Chihaya's, but still quite unbelievable. Author should stop making the team lose at the beginning just to create more tension, where is the season 1 good game sequences writing??

Now I am starting to dislike Chihaya more, she's annoying when she always cry. Crying after she won, crying after she met Arata. Okay I get that you want to cry, but cry silently, don't just COL (cry out loud) in public, that's.. shameless

Edit:

It was repetitive, the that 2 other matches which took 1 episode respectively. Met new opponent, opponent dominates for a while, Mizusawa make a comeback, opponent loses, and has gained more passion for karuta, and coach approves! By the way why the hell did that female coach changes so fast after the match? Lol that was like 160degree change.

True, we did not see Mizusawa's victory coming, because it's so unrealistic and unbelievable, no doubt it's intense and touching, but them winning is.. you said it was flawlessly written? Wrong, it's full of flaw, first, how could the other 2 members of Mizusawa that lost, corner their opponent until there were only countable cards of difference at the end of their match? How did they manage to take the cards off their opponent who are A class players. The same goes for Taichi and Nikuman.. meh I am off to dinner now so I'll stop here

As I was tense at the end, almost fantastic episode, I'm thinking a thought but it is not so strange, the episode is also reflect on the fact that Taichi addition to being good has finally had too much of his ass! :P
Nice storytelling, but it was a little bit explanation fielded to throw in Chihaya and Nikuman! ^^"

That was a really nice episode. For a little bit i doubted they would win even if it is pretty obvious they would, i am especially happy for Taichi he works so hard but his efforts don't pay off. I hope he has a happy ending with Chihaya he deserves it more than Arata since he is considerate and hard working, also in order for him to advance in Karuta he has to have much more confidence in himself and take some risks.

I especially love how there isn't just one way to play Karuta, each individual tries to use his assets the best way he can and the result is so many diverse games each one gives you a glimpse inside the minds of the people playing it.

Nice series great writing :)

This show is incredible. The way they slowly build up the intensity and emotions in the team matches is superbly done. One of the biggest strengths of the series is character development and we get to see a lot of that in Taichi. He's officially my favourite. Looking forward to see how the individual tournament goes.

And let me tell you a thing as someone who did compete with injury. Yes it's hard and you keep thinking about the injury but it is not impossible. Besides adrenaline rush does tend to kill lots of feelings and Chihaya moved only once faster than usual.

The girl she was playing is not exactly fast, she strongly depends on her grandma's voice. Chihaya on the other hand is extremely determined, hard working and focused and has played while listening to tons of different readers. Her opponent did not poses those qualities and she completely lost focus after the injury.

It was not speed that secured Chihaya a win, but her experience and she was not hitting cards with her injured finger.

Also I was wondering if this was a low blow or is it illegal, but could Taichi have forced his opponent to fault and lose on a dead card? Or does it not work that way? Like could he have hit the hand protecting that last card?

Loved the match, loved the episode, but my main issue of this season or all these matches in general is that they rely way too much on coincidences.
