Dam, people white knighting Miyo hard. She's the one that keeps throwing herself at him in the first place when he was awkward as hell about it, probably because she was his master's freaking mistress. Of course Kiku's gonna act like that when it's a one sided relationship that apparently his master knows about now.

A major focus on this episode seemed to be on how Yakumo differs as a sexual being from Shin. Shin is constantly drinking and thinking about women. Yakumo has a beautiful woman who is dying for his attention, and yet his main focus is still rakugo. I do think there's definite subtext that Yakumo may be gay or asexual.

He's so apathetic with the ladies, despite him being pretty popular with them...I'm honestly starting to think he's gay (and not in a fujoshi way either). I don't think it'll ever be touched upon, and I definitely don't think Sukeroku feels the same way...but I really do think Kiku is attracted to him whether he knows it or not. Sukeroku is the only person who can get an honest to god emotional reaction out of the man; he's the one Kiku is always watching.

definitely my interpretation as well, i am actually surprised at how few people have noticed that in this thread lol. Imo it is patently obvious by the contrast of how he treats Shin and Miyokichi; he was smiling because he had Shin's head on his lap while he was sleeping but he was clearly disinterested when Miyokichi did the same. He said he might turn up at her place and she waited for him but he decided to have a few drinks and joke around with Shin.

Anyway, I also think the show is not saying everything directly but rather requires the interpretation and analysis of the audience, which has its own charm.

Nooo. I feel really bad for Miyokichi. She seems like she's really in love with Kikuhiko and it hurts me. I was somehow against with Kikuhiko x Miyokichi at first, but seeing Miyokichi cry changes my feelings for her. Miyokichi! ;-;

Yakumo's improvements and the problematic way to be of Sukeroku lead to him finally taking the advantage for first time and now being the prefered one, including a tour to go with his master, his satisfaction for that was palpable.

But this also leads to him having to choose between rakugo or Miyokichi, and looks like she's the one that will end up losing in this decision, it hurts to see her suffering like that.

When Miyokichi made her cameo appearance, I didn't think I'd like her that much. Though, I felt for her in this episode. I assumed that there would be more of a love triangle situation (like most drama) but this show proved me wrong. I think Kiku did the right thing, but in my opinion he should've ended it with her sooner. Oh well.

I'm about to watch the next episode! This series has been really good so far.

There's a lot of little hints at Bon being gay, so I think that's part of why it might make it easy for him to cast Miyokichi's feelings aside... It doesn't change the fact that for her, it's pretty brutal. In fact, I think both of them are more similar than they know. From what I've gleaned so far it feels like... both of them are experiencing one-sided affections.

("He's taking you away from me." Maybe so...)

On a separate note... Bon seems, in some ways, a little envious of femininity? There's a feminine ideal for him that it fascinates him to perform, and I think being rejected as a kid when trying to be a geisha influenced that outlook a bit.

I don't think Bon is gay, but he is kind of playing a woman's role socially, he even calls himself "atashi". And also he often hits Sukeroku and Sukeroku doesn't fight back, just as if it were a girl hitting him.

Like I said, I don't think he is gay, I just think he is very shy and reserved and insecure about himself and that is why he is so cold towards Miyokichi, he is awkward.

Whatever the case, the characters are extremely interesting, and Miyokichi is probably the sexiest girl I have ever seen in anime.

I think this is the first episode where you can truly see how close and almost brotherlike Sukeroku and Yamuko are. I definitely liked seeing Yamuko grow to have an even greater mastery of his rakugo, but it was also quite painful watching his sudden burst of popularity result in his relationship with Miyokichi getting strained. On one hand, I'm hoping it works itself out, but

Ok, I teared up a bit there.

Miyokichi's character turned out completely different than expected. It's all fun when she's acting a bit jealous in a playful manner, but it not so much to see her all depressed about her unrequited loved.

Given Bon's priority in life and his attitude towards her it's easy to say that she should give up. However, his vague answers give her still hope to cling toand some women like men who show the could shoulderAnd the fact that he later spent some time with Shin while Miyokichi was desperately waiting with her tear-stained face, that sucks.

This is why I hate drama. Yeah, I get that the dude's trying to be respectful to his master, but apparently being considerate doesn't extend to thinking about how the girl feels too. People just don't communicate for the sake of brewing up pointless melodrama that tugs at viewers' heartstrings. Well I don't like that shit.

I really don't get the praise for this show so far. It's like the most formulaic drama. Perhaps it's good by anime standards where 99% of the time people don't act like people, but compared to live action standards it's good but not spectacular.

It's a tale of two close friends with opposite personalities and follows their entangled journey as they approach their lives in different ways and then a woman appears on the scene to complicate things. We follow them as they advance in different ways in whatever sport/activity the show is centered around and in this case it happens to be rakugo. And of course the two friends here are the stereotypical straitlaced one and the big-hearted, carefree but messy one. Nothing's bad, but it's just going through the motions.

What a puzzling episode. So was Kiku just reciting a future play or was he serious about the lovesick thing? Did that make him distance himself from Miyokichi or was it the question Yuurakutei proposed? So many questions... I suppose the only way is to watch the other episodes.

Poor Miyokichi, Kiku always vague to girls.. rakugo is more important for him rn, he wants to improve more and more.. she should understand it.

Pretty melancholic episode as a whole if you're Miyokichi or Sukeroku, at least it was nice seeing Kikuhiko develop in his skills so well while having a more serious and disciplined attitude towards rakugo to the point that the Yakumo himself wants Kiku to join him on a rakugo tour for a while. You can tell the Yakumo has been really waiting for the moment that Kiku blossoms like this, since Kiku would make a great tour partner for him, definitely more than Shin right now given how he's an alcoholic and always argues with him and wastes his money on living the good, entertaining life without thinking about the future.

I actually feel bad for Miyokichi. Kikuhiko keeps ignoring her and almost always turns down dates. It seems that he distances himself from his love interests as he piles up his feelings(thus making him lovesick) but I'm not even sure if he likes her. But if he doesn't like her he should tell her soon.

Funny how Shin longs for a girlfriend while Kikuhiko is in a relationship he doesn't seem to be interested in.

I agree. Kiku is acting like an insensitive idiot here and it disgusts me. A warm beautiful woman is staring him in his face and he's ice cold. He is acting like crap and it will come back to haunt him..

It's unnecessarily cruel of Kikuhiko to treat Miyokichi like that, when all she's ever done is shower him with love and helping him with his struggles. I don't like where this is going.

Poor Miyokichi, I feel for her. Rewatching this (and not remembering anything), there's so much more subtle and non-verbal communication that I recall.

Kiku is obviously distancing himself from her now, because he wants to focus on Rakugo and his master asked about Miyo (turn off for him, I'm sure). Of course she did come on strong, but Kiku didn't exactly let her down gently or give her a solid reason, in fact I feel like the way he did it was quite cruel.

Miyokichi has been kind and supportive of him, so it's a shame that he treats her that way. Clearly even in old age he never took on a wife so says alot about this guy; he's a very selfish man.

Yakumo collects lovers like stamps, yet he demonstrably doesn't like any of them and doesn't give a fuck about meeting any of them ever. So, with that in mind, why does he keep dating these women? If anything, Yakumo seems more like he'd rather be cosying up to Sukeroku in an escalation of their already somewhat homoerotic bromance.

A bizarre series, as usual.
