----------------------------------------
Such a tense episode. We also got more of Thorkell again in battle and he's such a barbaric sight to see with his fighting style.

A lot of action this episode with the wartime mood. I must say, this episode captured a great deal of what violence is about. Thorkell in particular displays his impressive fighting skills. Glad to also see Thorfinn encountering him again. It was inevitable.

I can already see the rule 34 & rule 64 of Canute appearing by the end of this season.

Good episode, Thorkell was happy to see Thorfinn, and it seems that Thorkell knew Thors. I hope they elaborate their relationship more in the next episodes.

I liked how the war scenes are portrayed in this anime, they are very realistic and include a lot of violence. I am looking forward to seeing more fight scenes later on in the series.

Still no Kensho Ono...

Overall, 5/5

Oh Jesus Christ Thorkell shredding men at the speed of a blender. I never thought I'd need this in my life.
Such a great episode, the beginning was a big highlight for me in the manga and it perfectly captured that.

Lol'd at the discussion during the first half especially Thorkell going full "senpai, notice me" for King Sweyn. Gotta love how violence was depicted here. Thorkell started shredding everyone in his path effortessly and his discussion with Thorfinn claiming that he knows his parents certainly got his attention. Canute, Ragnar and the priest now are being escorted by Askeladd's band. Amazing episode.

Does the Vinland saga's visual image on Mal changed a bit?
"I think I wanted to attack something. Like betraying people or hurting people. And, well, it's not exactly nice, but hurting the readers too... In all honestly, I feel that's what I really wanted to do. For me, as a reader, when I think, "this manga will remain in my heart," it means, for example, it phenomenally hurt me: It's those kinds of experiences I'm after." - Pajime Hisayama (My favourite hurting author).

Amazing show. 10/10 . However the media is gonna get pissed off over the first half. The dialogue was very mature, but it really mocked christianity. And things like this don't pass well over. And this is why 20th century boys will probably never get an anime adaption. Non the less, AOTY.

Princess Canute got passed around like a bong First Thorkell then Ragnar then Askellad at the end. Thorkell knew just how to goad people into stupid acts The fire was a touch of brilliance

did Canute convert to christianity since he can relate to Jesus Christ weak body and pacifist attitude, and why their country or all of the Vikings are fine with him being a christian and not worshipping Odin

I actually really like the way they didn't cater to the audience and treat religions with respect so as to not offend anyone. Because this is the vikings period we're talking about where violence, assault, rape is common. Religious people are not going to be treated with respect everywhere they go, especially not by brutes like those guys. It's more realistic this way, and i love it.

A lot of blood and deaths in this episode. Thorkell is still a beast and was happy to see Thorfinn.

Thorkell knew Thors and I hope we get to learn about their relationship in future episodes.

I would love to see an episode or two focusing on Thors' younger days.

Damn Thorkell is my favorite character of this series, such playfulness and vigor! If things go well, I might add him to my favorite list.

I think that's a prince though, he is one of those girly type supposed to be "work of noble beauty" characters. Let's hope he's interesting and will bring something to the story line.

I myself though cannot wait for a rematch between Thorfinn and Thorkell.

Another violent episode this week, with an interesting ending to top it off. Honestly, though, the twist isn't really all that surprising, as it perfectly explains why Canute always hides his/her face and never speaks (I suppose he could just be a feminine man, but then why go to all the lengths to conceal the face and voice if that is the case?).

The episode flew by,we got to see once again how dangerous Thorkell can be in battle.Thorkell hinted his connection with Thors and Helga to Thorfinn this chapter.

And finally Thorfinn meets Canute,he is bishounen btw.

Thorfinn was so fucking cool this episode, playing the 'hero'. I wonder when Askeladd is going to admit that he actually cares about Thorfinn? He's tsundere af haha

Now the main point; Canute is one hella beautiful man... he's so damn pretty that it made me just a little bit jealous haha

Thorkell is so crazy
His fighting style really has something of a Berserk
Thorfinn's reaction surprised me a bit tho. I think it was clear that Thors was a popular warrior, but it's not far known that his wife is called Helga...
He even flinched when Thorkell mentioned her name. Still asked "you know my father" instead of "you know my mother". Idk it just felt off and I'm really curious about that now..
Wanted to see how everyone's doing back in the village for a while now.. Hope we get sth soon

And we finally get to see Canute's face. I mean most knew it before but it's been shown to the characters now. Ofc the question would be if he's not the princess

They most definitely can fit the rest of the first arc in the remaining 13 episodes of the season if they dont add anymore original content.Just doing 2 chapters per episode for the next 13 would mean 48 chapters of the 54 chapter prologue adapted. Given that a few of those chapters were really short some episodes could probably adapt 3 chapters so they can get up to chapter 54. Episode 4 adapted like 5 chapters so that's possible.

From here there are many chapters with 20~ pages, and even a few with 10~ pages. I think they will be fine. 36 episodes is too much for the Prologue Arc.

But of course. Thorkell is so much of a best girl that he's even doing a 'notice me Senpai' move like @MonkeyDHunter so correctly stated.

They did a real good job of making Canute look as bishounen as humanly possible. This adaptation is nailing it soo good.

Well ... now that episode was great. Liked the end of the last episode and this whole episode. Less Thorfinn dreaming about past or talking without battle. Thorkell not too much overpoweredness screentime. (Though im cutting whole trees with his attacks is a bit much ... but it did not get screentime.)

The funny leisurely talks when Throkell travelled ... were good. That's how vikings are. Jokes about food, women and alcohol. The christian priest also likes the god of booze.

Edit: The fingers of Thorkell ... hat to look closely previous episode. This episode it was visible better. But still ... the woudn seemed to have healed really good ... or they did not want to make it look more ugly. I doub't even with modern medicine it will look that clean and flat after cutting a finger.

It wasn't teleportation, they showed it from the attacker's perspective. He understimated Thorfinn and from his perspective it looked as if Thorfinn disappeared (when in reality he just quickly went underneath the strike).

The religion of victimology started seeping in to the North. The Xtians had the advantage of taking over what the Pagan Roman Empire had built, in the prosperous Mediterranean with its easy sea trade and weather favoring agriculture. It was easy to spread from there, on Roman roads with Roman weapons and technology (for its time). Even though they destroyed the complex Roman economy, and lost the ability to make concrete and repair the aqueducts, so that disease spread with the closing of the public baths. (And with the belief that "a Christian only needs one bath, baptism". Cleanliness was a sin as it showed you cared about the material world, which was of Satan. Priests took pride in their stench.)

Anyway. The fanatic monotheism had these southern Roman-built advantages, and the rest of Europe wanted to maintain the trade with these areas. Especially since the North, from Germany and upward, was colder, and it took a thousand years to clear the massive forests for agriculture. But the fanatics often refused to trade with people who weren't Christians.

And when lords farther north turned Christian, they were told to be equally fanatic, and turn against their own people. You couldn't stay long as a guest or trader if you weren't a Christian. Even though those of European religions had often welcomed visiting monotheists, they weren't shown the same generosity.

It's like communism - the monotheism of economics. They ask for the freedom to spread when they are fewer, but once they are strong enough they wage war and take over.

Could it be that Thorfinn will switch sides eventually? He is only there for the chance to defeat Askeladd, after all. Or they'll find a reason to join forces. We know that eventually most of England will become the Danelaw under the united Viking invasion - which is why English is a relatively easy language. The Vikings didn't have books to learn the language from, so they simplified it. So instead of having masculine and feminine nouns, or something like Die, Das, Der in German, all words are simply "the". The world lucked out with having English as the lingua franca, instead of the original lingua franca, French.

Funny discussion with the Christians in the carriage. Those of religions reflecting the nature of the European peoples could talk easily about these things - everyone had their own gods, as it had been since Roman times and before. But when Xtians took over an area, like communists, they wouldn't allow any dissenting views. When Constantin became emperor his belief was shared by only fifteen percent, but among those were freed slaves and servants - foreigners, who loved tearing down the Greek and Roman temples, symbols of the winning culture they lived under. And then of course they started slaughtering the Arian Christians, who thought Jesus was The Only Son but not God. A relaxed discussion like the one in the carriage became impossible. And so it would be in former Viking lands as well. Until Protestantism came and things slowly returned to the more relaxed state the followers of Bishop Arian had espoused. I think the Japanese and Chinese had it better, retaining the many gods that were simply a reflection of their people's nature.

The carriage discussion reminds me of the TV show Vikings, when they see the crucifix with a dead person on it:

"That's their god. He's not alive, like our gods."
"Then what use is he?" Heh.

As a side note, the Romans considered Christians and Jews to be in the same vein as atheists, since if your god is simply in everything everywhere, there is no distinction between this or that. Whereas European gods were like in the rest of the world, considered actual living beings who lived on Mount Olympus or in some realm connected to yours. Like humans but much more powerful than ordinary humans. (Like the Jews had, originally, considered their god YHWH - one among many tribal gods in the area. But then they decided that their god was the only one and the other gods, like Ba'el/Baal, were demons.)

Surprising to hear Thorfinn raise his voice and shout "Don't shoot, it's me, I'm here with the prince." Usually he is so quiet. I was expecting he would ask someone else to shout instead.

Funniest moment was when the two men came out of the smoke side by side, but then realized they were on opposing sides.

Whenever I watch historical settings like this I can't help but wonder what it would be like if one side had discovered gunpowder. It's not THAT hard to make. Just ask Senku.

I don't think it's currently generating enough attention yet for the western media to start picking holes in it's "problematic" material.

Mocking Christianity seems to be the in-thing at the moment anyway. Just don't insult any other abrahamic religion though, otherwise you get branded with all sorts of -isms. Not that it bothers me, it's just an observation.

In anycase, I think the anime is fantastic and should it get a S2 will go on to become a classic if it's continued to be adapted well.
